- Hallstatt a small town in the Salzkammergut is located at the south-western shore of the Hallstätter See in upper Austria.
Till the end of the 19.th Century Hallstatt could only be reached by ship or narrow paths. Nevertheless the place has a rich history. First finds date from around 5.000 B.C. The reason for the early settlement activities and the prosperity lays in the salt mining. The first brine line of the world to the small town Ebensee was built in the 19.th Century. Guided tours to the world´s oldest salt mine are available.
The houses of the narrow village are located directly at the lake. Before the road has been built they were attainable only from above over the attics. The others nestle picturesquely to the steeply rising mountainside.
Since December 1997 the region Hallstatt - Dachstein / Salzkammergut is part of the UNESCO list of Cultural Heritage.

Hallstatt im Salzkammergut, liegt am Hallstätter See im Bundesland Oberösterreich.
Noch Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts war Hallstatt lediglich per Schiff oder über schmale Pfade zu erreichen.
Dennoch verfügt der Ort über eine reiche Geschichte. Erste Funde datieren aus der Zeit um 5.000 v.Chr. Der Grund für die frühe Siedlungstätigkeit lag im Salzbergbau. Das älteste Bergwerk der Welt ist im Rahmen von Führungen zugänglich. Die erste Soleleitung der Welt wurde bereits im 19. Jahrhundert nach Ebensee am Traunsee verlegt.
Die Häuser der eng bebauten Ortschaft liegen meist direkt am See und waren bis zum Bau einer Straße nur über die Dachböden von oben erreichbar. Die anderen schmiegen sich malerisch an die steil ansteigenden Berghänge.
Seit Dezember 1997 ist die Region Hallstatt - Dachstein / Salzkammergut in der Liste der UNESCO-Welterbe.

Hallstatt and Obertraun are awesome places to visit,winter or summer. The Ferry ride from train to village is nice. Mid summer tourists can be overwhelming.

I've been to Hallsatt twice. It is truly a lovely place.I recommend it to anyone.However be prepared for lots of tourists during the summer months,It is definitely not a "off the beaten track" destination.However if you stay there overnight you will be rewarded and have the town pretty much to yourself after the day trippers go home at night.I found it by accident from a picture on a German calender.I didnt even know where it was or anything about it.Great fun researching it & then to see it.

Thank you very much for your wonderful feedback! This small town is very famous! It gave a part of the bronze Age its name (Hallstatt time) becaus the Celts mined salt here and here were found 2000 graves of them. The Chinese rebuild the village inChina :-) Best wishes and have a wonderful weekend!
To me the trip starts way before I step on the plane.Part of the excitment is figuring out where to go.I always try to find off the beaten track places not mentioned in guidebooks.I find You Tube is an excellent way to do research.Either someone who has gone there on vacation or a local showing off his town makes a movie and you can get a good feel on if that is a place you want to visit or not. My first visit to Hallstatt was before it was "discovered".That made the reward even sweeter.
We have been there at Fronleichnam (Corpus Christi feast) on a weekend at end of May. Only during the Seeprozession (see onother viseo in this channel) there have been o lot of people. All the other time is the allocation of people on different attractions, like Krippenstein, Eisriesenwelt, salt mine, so barely noticeable that many tourists are there.

In the Center of Hallstatt you find the 'Seehotel Grüner Baum'. Ihas rooms with terraces to the lake. Its the big yellow hous besides the church. You can see it in the video. There are a lot of restaurants around. You don´t need a car inside the city. With a cable car you reach the graves of Hallstatt and the salt mines. On the other side of the lake ist the cable car to the Rieseneishöhle (ice cave) and the Krippenstein. But you also might visit beautiful places like Gosausee or Bad Ischl.
