Ice stops inflammation right? Is inflammation not useful, neurophils, macrophages etc. Would it not be better to reduce inflammation by movement. Will Using ice excessively not slow down recovery ?
Hi Stephen Doohan, you are correct that inflammation is useful. But excessive and prolonged inflammation can lead to swelling which can slow down the healing process (reduced circulation). Icing is great for acute injuries and use after physical activities (especially in rehab). Movement is great, and that will help promote blood circulation. As long as the movement is not too much for the injured area (hence optimal loading). We would never advise just using ice for recovery - hence the POLICE method.
@@EastWestPhysiotherapywont the lymphatic system drain excess edemia from the site?.. evolution and the body knows what it's doing. It's swelling exactly the amount it needs to promote neutrophile infiltration, plus movement to promote drainage, logic dictates will ultimately get you back on your feet quicker. A swollen foot for 1 or 2 days is NOT chronic inflammation, and unless you have some kind of condition, why the hell would you get chronic inflammation from a strained ankle or other? It seems more like chronic inflammation when you keep hindering your body's function for days on end by icing it
