      I’ve noticed that some of the sources covering the belt and deck thicknesses on the KGV class differ on what the base stats were (15in belt & 6in deck or 14.7in & 5.8in), now I know armour would be close but not exact when made but I don't think that explains why some books differ about this. Having those ocean-going ironclads delivered to the Confederacy as planned would probably end with more of the New Ironsides class being built and maybe even Dunderberg being finished in time. It'd be harder for the Union, but it wouldn't be a game changer.

    • @maxkronader5225
      @maxkronader5225 2 года назад +31

      I agree. After Lee's attempted encirclement of Washington to force an end of the war on Confederate terms was defeated, there was simply no realistic chance for Confederate victory. More ironclads to occassionally break the blockade for a week or two at one port or another would only have prolonged the war a bit, not changed the outcome.
      Offensive use of more ironclads against New York, or Boston, or Washington DC itself would have been unproductive at best. The Union Monitors were the best coastal defense ships in the world at that time and were available in sufficient numbers to repulse any confederate ironclad attack.

    • @markschennum188
      @markschennum188 2 года назад +33

      The Union had 4 Ocean going monitors by the end of the war. The Miantonomoh class. One of these was sent to Cuba to deal with CSS Stonewall, but the end of the war prevented this possible fight. These monitors were armed with 4 15” Dahlgren guns in 2 twin turrets, well armored, and relatively seaworthy. One crossed the Atlantic after the war and cruised to St. Petersburg. Another voyaged from east coast us, round Cape Horn to California. 4 more seagoing monitors of the Kalamazoo class were under construction, but never completed as the war ended. These had the same armament, but were larger, one knot faster (10 knots), more seaworthy with longer range. It is probable that these would have been accelerated had imported Confederate ironclads threatened. The USS Dunderberg would also probably have been accelerated.

    • @maxkronader5225
      @maxkronader5225 2 года назад +12

      @@markschennum188
      They wouldn't have needed the 4 ocean going monitors to defend against additional Confederate ironclads. They could be reserved for offensive action. The Passaic, Milwaukee, and Canonicus class coastal monitors could defend US ports against potential CS attack.
      Either way, Confederate purchase of four or five (or more) ironclads wouldn't have prevented, or even long delayed, Confederate defeat.

It's just that in a modern war, there isn't really a need to do something so complex and cumbersome when you can just sink the enemy combatant with a smart-weapon.
      You never know though. Maybe in a future conflict there might be an attempt to board a crippled warship. Perhaps even one similar to the past with LMGs sweeping the decks instead of Gatling guns.

      It's a story nearly as strange as the CSS Shenandoah. Not that it had as many owners, but when it docked in Melbourne for repairs and resupply, the Victorian government did the work in a government owned dock, hosted a huge reception for the officers and the crew got free train trips and accommodation in nice country hotels. Meanwhile the ship was repaired to a high standard and the skeleton crew not on vacation made a tidy profit providing guided tours of their warship. They also recruited extra crew from adventurous locals. Shenandoah then went on to sink about 16(?) Union ships and was the last Confederate unit to surrender, in Liverpool, England of all places. The USA then sued the British government on the basis that their ships would not have been sunk if not for all the work done in Melbourne. The British pointed out that Victoria had "responsible government" was quasi-independent and that they had no control over what their so called colony actually did. However an international tribunal forced Britain to pay compensation for the lost ships, so they sent the bill to Melbourne and asked for a refund. Needless to say, the Victorian government never paid up.

      Its also difficult with the Ventians to separate commercial and government ship actions as from the 12th century on the ships of the navy were owned by individuals rather than the state (supplied and outfitted by a massive government owned arsenal) and would alternate between civilian and military service. In one incident almost their entire navy was pretty much wiped out in one battle, they just called up the merchant reserves, opened up the arsenal, and replaced the whole fleet overnight.

It is an interesting historical mischief of Kotetsu that the Tokugawa Shogunate, which originally ordered this ship from the United States, could not purchase it, but the new government, which is an enemy, bought it and led the Tokugawa Shogunate army to defeat. Kotetsu is a name that wasn't like the original Japanese ship.Kotetsu means that it is covered with iron or steel. The appearance of this ship is the same. It is understandable that she later changed her name to Azuma. 東 means the east of the direction if you look only at the Chinese characters, but when you read this Chinese character as Azuma, it means the Kanto area centered on Edo, which is located east of Kyoto.

    While the samurai that Kotetsu fought against at Hakodate Bay *were* Tokugawa loyalists, at this point the Shogunate was already over and they didn't see themselves as rebelling against the Emperor. Hokkaido (known as Ezo at the time) wasn't really considered part of Japan yet. They wanted to make it part of Japan (which happened), and have the Tokugawa clan rule it so that their now-unemployed retainers would have jobs again (which the Meiji government rejected).
    It's actually kind of odd that this proposal wasn't accepted, yet appointing Tokugawa Iesato as a prince and making him Japan's chief diplomat to Europe was fine.

    Thanks for posting this video. Iron class are such an interesting topic that rarely gets discussed. I've never seen the pics of the ironclads with sails and steam power. The ones I've read about and seen are the giant behemoths encased in thick sheets of iron that were hardly maneuverable. The poor souls that served aboard them were butchered if a Canon ball pierced through the hull and bounced about the inside. RIP brave sailors.

  • @machaiping

    Ah, I remember this ship from Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai.
    Seeing AI deployed a doom fleet filled to the limit with Kotetsu once in the Hard mode campaign. I was shocked for a while because it showed up on a front where only one of my fleets, consisted of just one Kotetsu Ironclad and five Kasuga Armored Corvettes (the second best non-ironclad steam ship.) standing in its way. Lost half of the Kasuga fighting that fleet, but I won.
    In the campaign most of the time the player only need one Kotetsu for each fleet; Their gun out-ranged all other ships and forced the AI to attack the player, so the player can deploy the rest of their fleet in a perfect T-cross position waiting for the AI to sail into range one by one. Quite broken by the virtue of breaking the AI wide open and the reason for why I remember this ship, heh.

    if you've ever played Total War; Shogun, Fall of the Samurai, this is one of the ships you can get (alongside foreign ironclads you can hire/buy like USS Roanoke and, ironically, HMS Warrior). It alway s used to irk me that the thing had nine guns: basically one stuck in every gun-port. whether this was intentional or not, though, she was only able to really fire two guns on any bearing--I think there might have been one very limited arc where you could get three to fire, but beyond that, it was two. she did also have her gatling, which was a nice touch and a surprise to me the first time I saw it raking a shogunate warship as she passed.

    Turret in this case would not be a misnomer, as our modern understanding and usage of the word might suggest. The word turret is borrowed from medieval castle architecture. A turret was an offset structure from a central tower, mostly circular and with slits or ports to fire from, and much like the ironclads, they did not rotate.
