  • Rotavirus is "horrible" for children, says Texas Medical Association physician leader Ryan Van Ramshorst, MD.
Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide, especially in children under 2 years of age. The highly contagious viral infection attacks the stomach and intestines and leads to high fever, vomiting, and persistent diarrhea.
After describing the symptoms and threats from this disease, Dr. Van Ramshorst notes vaccination is the best way to prevent rotavirus in infants and young children.
TMA created this monthly series to inform people about contagious diseases that childhood and adult vaccinations can prevent. Some others in the series include pneumococcal disease, chickenpox, measles, and pertussis. visit www.texmed.org/talktoPatients/.

TOO LATE! I am well beyond my first birthday, uh... more like 22 times that lengh of time. I seem to be one of the rare breed of people who miraculously avoided contracting the virus at an earlier age and thus never achieved a natural immunity. Now I am 22 years old a young adult and I am now currently ill. I have been sick for a few days and I 'crawled' to my local NHS clinic here in Poole, Dorset (UK) and got examined. I had a blood count and a stool specimen taken. two days later I received info of the test results. negative for the blood test, but positive for rotavirus. (humane rotavirus). Thus I came down with the full illness with the usual gastroenteric symptoms, now predominately painful intestinal cramps and moderate to severe diarrhoea. On average in a 24 hour day, I have been making 9 trips to the loo. This in turn day and night affected my sleep pattern and fatigue has now set in. I had two accidents, one in bed in my sleep, and I wound up spending energy that I did not really have and changed the soiled bedding. Plus on my way to the NHS clinic, I had a embarrassing public accident as well. I am not out of the woods yet, as I don't know how much longer I shall be ill. Gopefully I can make a full recovery soon!
