"Post-apocalyptic arctic tundra" I just love the way you said that. As a non native english speaker some words or sentences sounds so interesting(can't really explain why). I have listened to this part more than I'd like to admit.
I think it was a fair review. I really don't like comparing pokemon to this series because it's a totally different type of battle mechanic and catching mechanic. I would compare it to the older games and explain what it was built around in the first place. Comparing it to Shin Megami Tensie is very fair especially SMT5. The colloseum or tournament battle systems have always had it to where you needed no control of your monsters and let their own nature's take over. The synthesis and music will always be a big staple for this series. Adding something a little extra is a great thing but is what fans come to expect from the DQM formula. Awesome review keep up the good work.
This is a Switch Exclusive, so that adds a couple points to the review IMO. For now, it's looking like Dragon Quest Monsters is better than Pokémon. I don't get that feeling of spite out of Tose like I do out of The Pokémon Company. TPC genuinely seems like they hate that their players have been asking them for a full-fledged home-console Pokémon RPG experience, while Dragon Quest Monsters' devs just came out of nowhere to deliver on that, even going the extra distance and tying it into the main-line Dragon Quest 4.
Played the demo and although it was slow to grip me due to visual and story blandness and a tutorial that dragged I was really getting into it by the end. I will prob wait for a sale but the demo in the end was pretty good. The monsters were great as well. I loved the flying pancake monster
I kinda like Treasures from last year but I think overall I prefer more traditional DQ.. I’d be far more excited for potential remakes of the earlier titles like they are said to be doing with DQIII
I'm in the same boat. I do love the monster collecting, but every DQM game I've played eventually feels like I'm just running brainless through a number of areas. I played DQM1 remake on 3DS, and by the end of it, despite being a big DQ fan, I entirely regretted playing it.
I like DQM more than pokemon, and i am a big pokemon fan. Sadly i am totally done with DQM:TDP done everything there is to do have 99% of all monsters now and most of them are level 100. Easy way to get monsters to level 100 is to jump amons zone outside and also where you fight doplh the destroyer, you are able to find king metal slime and killing him with physical attacks will net you over 500K exp and if you find a large one its over 1M exp so really good way to farm fast exp, besides you are able to find really rare eggs while hunting king metal slime 😊
Have been playing this even in the older systems, and not a super fan of the size system as the old ones are easier to digest. Agree with the DLCs being a little sketchy but still a very addicting game with or without it :) One tip about the arena / tournament matches where you cannot control your monsters is that you can also change the frequency a monster uses his move, use it a lot, use it sometimes, and never. With this, it will be easier to “predict” how your monsters will act. You also need to always consider the traits of the monster with your moveset to have maximum effect whether damage or status. See you in online battles :)
One thing I would like to know is the build variety in monsters you can make. Is there a lot of variety and many options for moves and abilities you can pick from, or are there just a load of variations of damage moves and healing moves, with some general buffs thrown in? For instance in Persona or SMT games, you can fuse support style demons, attackers, healers, ones that focus on crits, debuffing the enemy, etc. Do you get that in this game or do monsters only do like 2 things each?
Each monster has a few skill lists it can go down. They aren't skill trees but lists. You can put points into them as you like. Each monster has a few of these so 2 monsters might not have the same 2. You can fuse monsters and select what skill list you want to carry over. If 2 monsters share the same skill you carry more points over for that skill than you would with 2 different Learnsets
There are multiple elemental skills, physical skills, buffs, heals, and debuff trees that can be transferred to any monster through synthesis. There is a very large variety, and because they evolve and you can put three trees on a mon , it’s basically infinite combinations. Ontop of that, each mon has their own unique set of “talents” which are three passive skills that unlock at certain levels that can be used to synergy with your own build. There is a lot of freedom in the game.
Man, 4 of my favorite games the past 2 years have been these other monster collectors. Monster sancturary, casette beast, monster hunter stories 2, and now this. You know what they say , You gotta catch em all!
I think about 80% is the best that this game could get critically. Which I think is fair given the performance. Its much higher on my own scale, but then again, my own scale is extremely biased in favor of this game
Lol preorder and immediately stop playing all my other games just to play it 😂 I've been waiting for ever to play this ive played everyone on I could in the west so 🎉 the battling and synthesizing are the main bulk of this game thx for the video .
I've been enjoying this one. My only complaint (graphics aside) is how slow it is to take off. But once it gets going, it's pretty good. A lot of depth for those who want it, to be sure.
My only Game of this Series was Dragon Quest Monsters Joker. It felt really unique after playing Pokemon before this, especially the Synthesis mechanic.
My first DQM game was DQW2! I also love this game, put tons of hours into the demo, and pre-ordered the Digital Deluxe... but am very disappointed about the Mole Hole being paid DLC. I agree, it should have been part of the base game - maybe you could unlock it after finishing the main story. That's where it feels it should belong, not behind a $10 price-point on top of the full-price game. But again, I'm loving my time with the game, and want SE to bring more DQM to the west.
That Candyland level is awesome it gave me flashbacks to castle of illusion on the Sega Master System, oh gosh what I'd give to play that again, I'd say halve the reason I want this game is that candy land level, and I love Dragon Quest in general, my first dragon quest game was Dragon Quest 8 and I desperately crave to play that again on modern consoles, I have ALOT of great memories playing DQ8 back in the day
The monsters fighting by themselves in the arena isn’t really strange. That’s how the monster arena worked in DQ8. And we didn’t get to heal between rounds.
Seeing games go up against Pokemon is like watching boxers fight Mike Tyson...We've all got hopes for the young pretender, but... I watch it through my fingers
It's just testament to how great and Forwards the 'turn-based' combat in Mario RPG really is when you sit it next to games like this where combat looks terribly old fashioned. Like an old and broken chessboard. But then in this games slight defence, Mario RPG could make cement drying fun.
I wanna see the thing I just appointed me with the game is it feels like they made it very simple. The old dragon, quest monster games even the ones on the DS had proper towns to explore with a small side, quest opportunities. You also had to purchase a lot of items sort of like a item to get out of dungeons. I’ve had fun playing the game, but I just really wish it was a full dragon. Quest monster experience instead of being watered down.
Picked this up for my son for Christmas after we both played (and loved) the demo. Can’t wait to dive into the full game with him on the 25th. A great, fair review as always! Was looking forward to your thoughts on this one and (no surprise) they did not disappoint 😊

@@Ser-Smiley honestly even though it is locked at 30fps and has slight performance issues sometimes, I would say that being able to bring DQ anywhere you go just to play for a quick session makes it very worth it to get it on the switch. I would prefer to have it on PC for the extra fps, but the switch version is amazing and looks and plays wonderfully.
In both the Switch eShop & Nintendo Website; I saw the DLC as separate buys, bought digital Except for the Prince Pack, only available via Digital Deluxe it seems
Been absolutely loving this game. I played a lot of dqmj and dqmj 2 growing up. Never got around to played the fan translated 3rd one. This game has been an absolute blast don't know if it's in joker 3 but I love having 4 party members instead of three always fun to have more room for monsters.
When you play tournament you just choose tactics and fight no commands but tactics matter though in later ranks since you need have monster that heals, buffs ect since game get harder later half if your not prepared
Dragon Quest started the monster collecting/trading stuff, when Pokemon man wanted to trade his friend a rare wizard hat from dragon quest 2 or 3. Its amazing how good Dragon Quest is as a series and how slept on it is in 'the west' even by square enix, I strongly believe anyone playing Dragon Quest 1 vs Final Fantasy 1 and moving through both series like that would come out seeing Dragon Quest pushing the genre forward faster and more often than FF ever did, especially with Dragon Quest 1-5 then FF takes over for 6-7 and its a toss up from there
I thought the demo was neat, played it for a bit the other day. The repetitive mission progression sounds disappointing, and I also noticed what you mentioned about the towns/world feeling a bit lifeless at times. That was the first thing that caught my attention in the demo; where is everyone?!
My first ever DQ was the last one on PS1, DQ VII I think? All I remember was I accidentally bought it thinking it was some other game. Best accident ever 😅
The original for original Gameboy was one of my favorite games as a kid. I can’t wait to try this out. I didn’t try the demo out yet because I just know I’ll get cut off and want to play more. Hope to pick it up sometime when my wallet allows it.
I’ve only ever played like one half of 2 separate mainline DQ games but their spinoffs are SO GOOD! Monsters, Builders and Treasures are all just so good. Treasures is like one of my most played games of all time. It just hits that sweet spot between chill relaxing game that makes me happy but isn’t boring like a farm game or something. And DQ Monsters is excellent! I compare it to Monster Hunter Stories rather than Pokemon. Honestly the entire franchise is solid entertainment. They’re not really life changing games but will for sure give you 100s of hours of entertainment easily.
I love this game. I played all the ones that came out in the US. If you play the DS or the 3DS ones you’ll feel right at home the story is lacking a little bit but the gameplay is all there. I can see myself spending at least 50 hours on this game if not 100. It’ll all depend if I choose to go down that rabbit hole or not.
Might seem like a dimb question....not tech savvy...do these switch games load from the cartridge like games of old or do they save all.the data to the switch....meaning i will.have to get an sd card at some point Thank you
I've tried different Dragon Quest games but so far, nothing has stuck. But I'm glad they often have demos! I played the demo for this one, and I'm gonna be honest, I'm a bit disappointed with the starter selections, and the music grated on my nerves 😅 Thanks for the review, my Dragon Quest-less existence seems to continue. But it's probably good for my backlog that there's not another RPG I'm interested in xD
The starters aren't anything you will keep and evolve like Pokemon. They can be used to fuse with other monsters which allows you to share talents and stats in certain areas. The starters were something I found very quickly outclassed in all battles past the first half hour, so embrace the games 500 monsters, and the in-depth synthesis system.
Based off this review it seems the game is exactly like the original game with some modern improvements. Which sounds great to me! I loved the originals, and the fact that the systems from the gameboy game still work today is a testament to the series. ❤
The original Dragon Warrior Monsters for Gameboy is in my top ten of all time... Great progression system, it's own "legendaries" , an Arena central to the story, post game, nice little story and super rare fusion monsters! Highly recommend it, it made Pokemon seem boring in comparison and was way ahead of the competition.
The ugly textures and the horrible framerates really ruined this experience for me. It feels incomplete. I'm a massive fan of the original gameboy titles so when this was announced I was super happy. Really hard for me to purchase this at full price with the demos glaring issues. I'll buy it one day. Not any time soon though... What's 3 more years?
Thanks Mark, I’ve eagerly been waiting for your review of this game, as you guys’ reviews are the only ones I trust. I’ll give Dragon Quest Monsters a miss and will rather replay Dragon Quest Builders.
I haven’t played a dragon quest since professional joker (well now since xi) both joker and rocket slime introduce me to the series. I played the demo of this recently and I’m liking it so far. I may have to try the full game to get a better feel to it.
Why do I get the feeling you didn't come close to finishing the game or Fully understanding the mechanics? I love switch up but sometimes it can be felt that the writing of the review takes priority to the playing of the game. The general feel online is that for many this is one of the best switch games this year. 79 is kind of insulting.
Probably won't get this one because I'm not a fan of cut content sold back as DLC. That includes costumes and other "cosmetics". This is also one of the reasons why i am more picky about the games i buy
With how popular moster-raising games are, I don't understand why they are made so flawed. They'd sweep attention easily if they were as quality as other top games.
Thank god for Switchup.... I mean I pre ordered it as it's the first monsters style DQ in years! Not allowed to play yet though as is an Xmas prezzie (booo)
For sure. Badly optimized, Graphics looks like a PS2 game with filter, Cutting almost half of the monsters, eliminating 3 and 4 sized monsters, cutting off animations, the paid DLC was free in the predecessor, etc etc... I don't think you know what "perfected" means.
Do monsters stay relevant throughout the game if you like them, or does the game shift more towards ditching old mons in favor of "end game" mons as you progress?
I keep hearing that you can only guide their actions using general options. It's weird. It's like people don't understand how DQ handles party controls. Past DQM games had that and the ability to choose specific movies ( thin air etc). But also general commands (all out offensive, support, etc) This is how DQ has handled battles almost from the very beginning. Also is monster riding back from Joker 3?
Been playing DQ since it was released as Dragon Warrior. Gameplay-wise I'm pretty hyped....but honestly, I don't love the background visuals. Gonna play the demo this weekend and get a sense of the in motion visual experience. At $79.99 I better like it at the jump and not after patches and whatnot.

Poor whiny boi bubububu 😢
Played the demo and although it was slow to grip me due to visual and story blandness and a tutorial that dragged I was really getting into it by the end. I will prob wait for a sale but the demo in the end was pretty good. The monsters were great as well. I loved the flying pancake monster
Gets so much better with the synergies system. Mark
@@christaylor86 I’m at the part where you play the DQ11 S 8 bit mini game based on DQ1.. It’s nothing I expected either
It’s a shame they took a leaf from SV and sold it with some performance issues. Least this doesn’t crash or delete your saves for no reason.
Have been playing this even in the older systems, and not a super fan of the size system as the old ones are easier to digest.
Agree with the DLCs being a little sketchy but still a very addicting game with or without it :)
One tip about the arena / tournament matches where you cannot control your monsters is that you can also change the frequency a monster uses his move, use it a lot, use it sometimes, and never.
My first DQ game eas actually monster joker one on the DS Lite, good times and memories 😁
Playing this with my wife and little one and absolutely loving it. Elements of SMT, pokemon and that addicting dragon quest charm
I’ve never played this series and recently started Dragon Quest 3. I love the little history and lore you provided on top of how the game is.
I like the idea of this being a DQ4 prequel, but damn I feel like this game could look and work so much better considering how good DQ11 was ported
Hearing the DQ music in the background just gives me warm fuzzy feelings, lol
Lol preorder and immediately stop playing all my other games just to play it 😂 I've been waiting for ever to play this ive played everyone on I could in the west so 🎉 the battling and synthesizing are the main bulk of this game thx for the video .
I've been enjoying this one. My only complaint (graphics aside) is how slow it is to take off. But once it gets going, it's pretty good. A lot of depth for those who want it, to be sure.
Rose is also from dragon quest 4 she is his main motivation for doing what he does in that game
Feels like everyone is beating Pokemon at their own game now a-days.
I'm down for Shin Megami Pokémon Quest
Man that be a dream if something like that happens.
never played DQ, but this could be the game that gets me in
My only Game of this Series was Dragon Quest Monsters Joker.
😂
Even tho this series did the monster collecting thing first
Dragon quest is pokemons father. Check out dragon quest 5 to see where all your monster collecting games came from 😊
Hilarious
This didn’t age well. Lol jk
Well GameFreak has set the bar pretty low for the current gen Pokemon, so won't be surprised if this is better
Hahahahaha😂
this brings back some nostalgia, first DQ is dragon warrior gameboy thr first one and it was really memorable
I am really wanting something other than pokemon. But how does this one stack against coromon or nexomon?
Sad to see this game lacking on a tech level when Treasures was good looking
Think I will wait for a sale. Thanks Mark as always for the opening humor. Makes me laugh.
I played dragon quest on NES if that counts? I got dragon quest 11 on switch that I've never played if that counts??
It's just testament to how great and Forwards the 'turn-based' combat in Mario RPG really is when you sit it next to games like this where combat looks terribly old fashioned. Like an old and broken chessboard.
But then in this games slight defence, Mario RPG could make cement drying fun.
Never played this series so I'm intrigued for sure!
meh not for me but thanks for the review guys!! p.s. hearing the music makes me want to play DQ 11S again, god what a brillant game that one is.
We all have our bad opinions
Been excited for this one there’s been so little coverage on it once it’s come out though so cheers for the review
so in the tournament its pretty much like Monster Rancher then?
Hearing the Dragon Quest music in the background makes me want to play DQ11 again... b-but my DQ11 is on my ps4 and my ps4 is broken! Uuunghhh! 😣
I returned to dq11 on my switch after not playing it for 2 years and I’m now at 95 hours in and enjoying the “post game” which is just act 3. The game is fantastic and so much fun 😭
@@TheRockLobsterMafia i love act 3. It is so good! Best part about it is....
Spoiler!
The mermaid is still alive!! I literally cried when she returned to the sea and turned to bubbles at the end of her sidequest. So saaad! 😢
I was really happy to see that she's still alive in act 3. Viva time travel! Ave time travel! 😋
@@Ser-Smiley I know that was an amazing thing to see! And such a great quest line in general!
@@TheRockLobsterMafia one day im gonna double dip and buy DQ11 for my switch for sure. It's too good. Playing it once is not enough! 😋😤
If you purchase a physical copy can you purchase the dlc or is the dlc only available for the digital deluxe edition? 😮
In both the Switch eShop & Nintendo Website; I saw the DLC as separate buys, bought digital
Except for the Prince Pack, only available via Digital Deluxe it seems
Been absolutely loving this game. I played a lot of dqmj and dqmj 2 growing up. Never got around to played the fan translated 3rd one. This game has been an absolute blast don't know if it's in joker 3 but I love having 4 party members instead of three always fun to have more room for monsters.
You should play the DQM 2 remake, it is a better game overall.
@@hannariel gotta check that out then.
@@BlueTurn I forgot to tell that the remake are in Japanese only, but there are an excellent fan translation available.
I've never played the DQ Monsters series before. Is the tournament basically a cut scene then?
When you play tournament you just choose tactics and fight no commands but tactics matter though in later ranks since you need have monster that heals, buffs ect since game get harder later half if your not prepared
@@chavaperez8445 Ah I see, thanks!
Dragon Quest started the monster collecting/trading stuff, when Pokemon man wanted to trade his friend a rare wizard hat from dragon quest 2 or 3.
Its amazing how good Dragon Quest is as a series and how slept on it is in 'the west' even by square enix, I strongly believe anyone playing Dragon Quest 1 vs Final Fantasy 1 and moving through both series like that would come out seeing Dragon Quest pushing the genre forward faster and more often than FF ever did, especially with Dragon Quest 1-5 then FF takes over for 6-7 and its a toss up from there
SMT started it. Then DQV took inspiration from it in 1992 and Pokémon took DQV as a role model. :)
Bought this the other day. Never play a dragon quest game before. This might be my way into the series
dq 11 is god tier
The original for original Gameboy was one of my favorite games as a kid. I can’t wait to try this out. I didn’t try the demo out yet because I just know I’ll get cut off and want to play more.
Hope to pick it up sometime when my wallet allows it.
Technically, DQM predates shin magami. Technically
Might seem like a dimb question....not tech savvy...do these switch games load from the cartridge like games of old or do they save all.the data to the switch....meaning i will.have to get an sd card at some point
Thank you
save data stored on the switch storage, you will need to get sd card for games that have huge data download (even if it's physical or not).
@@IzukuLuffyAsta much appreciated thank you
I've tried different Dragon Quest games but so far, nothing has stuck.
11 will hook you get past the opening.
Have you tried Dragon Quest Builders 2?
Based off this review it seems the game is exactly like the original game with some modern improvements. Which sounds great to me! I loved the originals, and the fact that the systems from the gameboy game still work today is a testament to the series. ❤
The dopamine become so high when switch up uploads❤
I was on the fence about this one, but your review made me want to order it. This game looks so fun! Just purchased!
I've never played a Dragon Quest game before. This one looks really fun and may be the first one I dive into
Got this a while ago, finally getting around to playing it the past 2 weeks. Really like the game, thanks for the video!
I was on the fence and I was waiting for your guys review before I made my purchase. Thank you for all that you do
The original Dragon Warrior Monsters for Gameboy is in my top ten of all time...
My first dqm game was "dqm monsters joker ds"
The orc boss battle was by far the hardest for me
Thanks Mark, I’ve eagerly been waiting for your review of this game, as you guys’ reviews are the only ones I trust.
I might try the demo.. Look interesting..
DQM has always been my Pokémon. All my friends are talking about their childhood, filled with Pokémon and here I am. The only one who played DQM 😂
It’s probably my goty. Great game
I don't like the current model of buy the game and then buy the other half of the game later. Other than that this one looks promising.
Well hey its a spiritual successor to Monster Joker I guess? We didnt get the 3rd one translated so Im happy.
Thank god for Switchup.... I mean I pre ordered it as it's the first monsters style DQ in years! Not allowed to play yet though as is an Xmas prezzie (booo)
You’re welcome mate! Mark
Feels like they perfected the DQM formula
Basically just like shin megami tensei.
@@1trevor30 Thanks, but what if I told you I've never played Shin Megami Tensei? 🤔
@@ramon860 There is a progression of monsters getting stronger, but you can definitely make any monster viable with the right setup endgame.
Im interested in getting DQ dark prince.. how long is the battery life on the Switch Lite??
Been playing DQ since it was released as Dragon Warrior.
Gameplay-wise I'm pretty hyped....but honestly, I don't love the background visuals.
Gonna play the demo this weekend and get a sense of the in motion visual experience.
At $79.99 I better like it at the jump and not after patches and whatnot.
