I kinda like Treasures from last year but I think overall I prefer more traditional DQ.. I’d be far more excited for potential remakes of the earlier titles like they are said to be doing with DQIII
I'm in the same boat. I do love the monster collecting, but every DQM game I've played eventually feels like I'm just running brainless through a number of areas. I played DQM1 remake on 3DS, and by the end of it, despite being a big DQ fan, I entirely regretted playing it.
I returned to dq11 on my switch after not playing it for 2 years and I’m now at 95 hours in and enjoying the “post game” which is just act 3. The game is fantastic and so much fun 😭
@@TheRockLobsterMafia i love act 3. It is so good! Best part about it is.... Spoiler! The mermaid is still alive!! @@Ser-Smiley honestly even though it is locked at 30fps and has slight performance issues sometimes, I would say that being able to bring DQ anywhere you go just to play for a quick session makes it very worth it to get it on the switch. I would prefer to have it on PC for the extra fps, but the switch version is amazing and looks and plays wonderfully.
I've been playing this one the last few days and so far, despite the graphical flaws, it's pretty fun. I just can't shake the feeling that it could have been much more. Seeing that full AAA game price tag on it made me cringe slightly. This one could be my least favorite in the Monsters franchise so far.
Got mine a day late but have been playing a lot of this. The gameplay, especially synthesizing to get stronger monster, is addictive. Definitely a good game and I would end up with more than a hundred hours of gametime with this one
Might seem like a dimb question....not tech savvy...do these switch games load from the cartridge like games of old or do they save all.the data to the switch....meaning i will.have to get an sd card at some point Thank you
I thought the demo was neat, played it for a bit the other day. The repetitive mission progression sounds disappointing, and I also noticed what you mentioned about the towns/world feeling a bit lifeless at times. That was the first thing that caught my attention in the demo; where is everyone?!
Got it physical day 1 at my local GameStop. Honestly I wasn't expecting much/wasn't very hyped for it. Although as a DQ fan, I absolutely knew it wouldn't disappoint. Now a good couple days in, I can confidently say that it's amazing. It feels very modern. Maybe not exactly DQ11 quality, but still a more than worthy entry in the series. Don't sleep in it! You'll be addicted to the gameplay (and story) immediately.
I remember playing the Dragon Warrior Monster series as a kid on my gameboy. It's wild that like 20 years later this game still looks and feels so familiar and retains so much of the same core gameplay, just like pokemon has for 20 years. For me this franchise couldn't beat my love for pokemon during the gameboy era but now in the switch era, pokemon's been slipping and this game looks like it's aiming to take the throne.
I forgot this was coming out. What a treat! My First DQ experience was 8 back in the day, my favourite however was DQ builders 2. Thanks for the Review! Love the show guys.
I haven't been able to stop playing this over the past few days and I wasn't even planning on buying it at all! I find it more fun than the last few Pokemon games.
Played the demo and although it was slow to grip me due to visual and story blandness and a tutorial that dragged I was really getting into it by the end. I will prob wait for a sale but the demo in the end was pretty good. The monsters were great as well. I loved the flying pancake monster
Seeing games go up against Pokemon is like watching boxers fight Mike Tyson...We've all got hopes for the young pretender, but... I watch it through my fingers
Thanks Mark, I’ve eagerly been waiting for your review of this game, as you guys’ reviews are the only ones I trust. I’ll give Dragon Quest Monsters a miss and will rather replay Dragon Quest Builders.
Have been playing this even in the older systems, and not a super fan of the size system as the old ones are easier to digest. Agree with the DLCs being a little sketchy but still a very addicting game with or without it :) One tip about the arena / tournament matches where you cannot control your monsters is that you can also change the frequency a monster uses his move, use it a lot, use it sometimes, and never. With this, it will be easier to “predict” how your monsters will act. You also need to always consider the traits of the monster with your moveset to have maximum effect whether damage or status. See you in online battles :)
I miss having the huge boss monsters from all over the dragon quest series in my group, they used to have 3 and 4 slot sized monsters in previous entries on the 3ds. You could become that endgame boss and crush all enemies. Now we will have to do with 2 medium sized monsters I guess :D
@@Mysteryboy0007 I havent played the game for a few months so I am not sure what they added since, but at launch no, the biggest monster you could get was 2 slots.
@@BarnzTT it's DQM's gimmick, comparable to evolution in pokemon, by sacrificing 2 monsters you get 1 that is more powerful than what you used to fuse it

I think it was a fair review. I really don't like comparing pokemon to this series because it's a totally different type of battle mechanic and catching mechanic. I would compare it to the older games and explain what it was built around in the first place. Comparing it to Shin Megami Tensie is very fair especially SMT5. The colloseum or tournament battle systems have always had it to where you needed no control of your monsters and let their own nature's take over. The synthesis and music will always be a big staple for this series. Adding something a little extra is a great thing but is what fans come to expect from the DQM formula. Awesome review keep up the good work.
My first DragonQuest game was DragonQuest 11 on PS4. I’ve since fell in love with the series and now own DQ 7, DQ 8, DQ 11 on Switch, DQ Builders 1 &2, and DQ Treasures. Can’t wait to play this one!!! I love everything about the series. The characters, the music, the lore, everything 🤣
From the review I was expecting high 60s-low 70s, so 79% came as a suprise! Will probably pick this up on a sale. Just nabbed DQ treasure for £25 on Amazon sale so have plenty to do!
One thing I would like to know is the build variety in monsters you can make. Is there a lot of variety and many options for moves and abilities you can pick from, or are there just a load of variations of damage moves and healing moves, with some general buffs thrown in? For instance in Persona or SMT games, you can fuse support style demons, attackers, healers, ones that focus on crits, debuffing the enemy, etc. Do you get that in this game or do monsters only do like 2 things each?
Each monster has a few skill lists it can go down. They aren't skill trees but lists. You can put points into them as you like. Each monster has a few of these so 2 monsters might not have the same 2. You can fuse monsters and select what skill list you want to carry over. If 2 monsters share the same skill you carry more points over for that skill than you would with 2 different Learnsets
There are multiple elemental skills, physical skills, buffs, heals, and debuff trees that can be transferred to any monster through synthesis. There is a very large variety, and because they evolve and you can put three trees on a mon , it’s basically infinite combinations. Ontop of that, each mon has their own unique set of “talents” which are three passive skills that unlock at certain levels that can be used to synergy with your own build. There is a lot of freedom in the game.
The thing i like is that Psaro is the main villain of Dragon Quest 4, and this game gives you an insight as to what he was up to while the chosen ones were trying to save the world. Knowing the plot makes watching the bond between Psaro and Rose grow that much more depressing.
I'm probably gonna get this I hope there is online pvp or something, just found out this exists,2 weeks away needed some new dq fix before the dq3 remake comes out.
The reason I bring you this today SE is because after two hundred hours of which almost half is dedicated to ranked pvp I have suffered more likely racist disconnects then defeats. It is clearly being used as a racist feature, or abuse feature in general to make sure NO ONE can EVER rank. DQM3 suffers from major fraud because of a massive oversight by SE. If someone closes their game, or force closes their internet it AUTOMATICALLY makes YOU de-rank forcing you to de-rank for reasons such as, bias, jealousy, ignorance, racism, and more. This massive oversight is being used AS A FEATURE to abuse everyone in ranked with disconnects that sometimes even force your internet to crash as well. This oversight MUST be acknowledged, for the entire ranked community is ruined because of it. You are ALL basically using racism, and rage quits to make sure NO ONE can actually gain rank in game ruining the entire ranked system permanently until fixed or acknowledged. THIS MUST BE ACKNOWLEDGED for it is disgusting. I'm here to bring this to light.
It is so beyond annoying when people compare monsters to Pokemon DRAGON QUEST 5 INSPIRED POKEMON NOT THE REVERSE all the references to Pokemon in this review show a complete lack of background knowledge. This is the 3rd main game in the Monsters series and it's clear the reviewer never played 1 or 2 or their remakes
I'll probably wait and just get a physical jp copy with english language support as it is a lot of cheaper here. I manage to get jp Treasures copy in less than $20 and even a jp copy Adventures of Dai is around $30 right now.
*Pokemon:* This kid you become friends with needs to get special herbs to heal his dying dog, who got injured because the guy went to find his mom/dad in a dangerous section of the region. Only to find out later that his mom/dad was dead all along, and also planned to introduce monsters/machines from another time to the region, destroying its ecosystem. Hes also made to say goodbye to his mom/dad again via an AI clone, which sacrifices itself to save the region. *DQM Dark Prince:* you meet a tribe of Golems who are all sitting around in the desert, waiting to erode away, because they would all rather die than serve an evil wizard that lives in a temple nearby, who has them all cursed into eternal servitude. You beat the guy to free the golems, only to find that they all died anyway, making it all for nothing, unless you consider the thought that maybe this was what counted as freedom for them all along. _AND THIS IS IN ONLY ONE WORLD OUT OF NINETEEN!_
I would say no. It's kind of garbage. The story is skewed and the plot is poorly polished. At times I would wonder if I'd missed some parts of the story elsewhere after certain choices or dialogues. It just feels like the story jumps all over, with huge gaps between that lacks information; and the 'silent protag' gimmick makes things worse since you have no idea what's happening in between the dialogues. Makes you wonder how this got the approval to go on the market. *Spoiler For example, you're asked to give up your demon blood, but rejection in doing so equates to you wanting to destroy humanity even if there was no precedence prior. So what? If I'm a black man and decide that I want to keep my skin color, it means that I hate white folks and want their destruction? Wtf is up with that logic? Again, this is due to the 'silent protag' gimmick. I'd reckon if there was dialogue from the MC this might make a little more sense. Furthermore, there were interactions/choices that would allow you to renounce the destruction of humanity, but when choosing said option, your enemy (the good guys) tells you that they see through your lies. Llike, wtf? Don't leave that option in there then if you're going to come up with ridiculous 'explanations' to set you on the path of evil. That option wasn't even necessary and would make things a lot less confusing. Later story writing were also pretty bad, from someone trying to be Psaro's imposter, the sorry excuse of the 'hero' whom so clearly saw that it was the Psaro imposter who destroyed his village (he had to have known, because he was constantly fleeing for his life), to the kidnapping of the elf. All in all, this is one sorry excuse of a game where choices do not matter at all. The game just forces you into a singular path that they want you to take using pathetic excuses and reasonings, regardless of the choices you made. If monster synthesis and proper storyline is what you're after, go Shin Megami Tensei instead. DQM is kinda trash imo.
Thanks for this review - I was heavily unaware that this game had just come out a few days ago and had no idea it was even set to release at any point whatsoever. I'll definitely be buying this soon, but not before I finish Dragon Quest XI, which I've finally had the opportunity to play. Is there a Japanese voice acting option, by the way? I'm not particularly an English-dub-hater nor an original soundtrack/voice acting "simp", but recently, I mean, at least in comparison to Dragon Quest VIII, the English voice acting has become a tad cringe-inducing.
I tried, I really did. I played Dragon Quest VIII, XI, Treasures, Builders - but the terrible soundtrack always made me turn the game off after a certain point.
I know I’m massively late on this one but what would people recommend more. DQ treasures or DQ monsters??? I know it’s subjective but is there a clear better game?
idk, performance wise and visuals-wise, it's like a cross between Sword and Shield's sort of older cel-shaded look with none of Scarlet and Violet's more modern shaders, smaller areas, and similar performance. Personally, I don't care but to call a spade a spade this runs about as poorly as Scarlet and Violet, and yes the Switch is a large part of the problem. Any game that has a lot of AI characters rendering on-screen at once causes the Switch to shit itself.
In both the Switch eShop & Nintendo Website; I saw the DLC as separate buys, bought digital Except for the Prince Pack, only available via Digital Deluxe it seems
I would be more receptive to dragon quest games if they EVER changed up the music. At this point not, not only is it antiquated it’s also repetitive considering how it’s the same music regardless of game.
If you're into Monster Taming then it's really not hard to be better than Pokemon nowadays. Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei, Cassette Beasts and so many others just do a better job these days.

Lol preorder and immediately stop playing all my other games just to play it 😂 I've been waiting for ever to play this ive played everyone on I could in the west so 🎉 the battling and synthesizing are the main bulk of this game thx for the video .
@@christaylor86 I’m at the part where you play the DQ11 S 8 bit mini game based on DQ1.. It’s nothing I expected either
wow the first video review I found... thanks square enix for another DQ fumble
Feels like everyone is beating Pokemon at their own game now a-days.
16 HOURS IN I love it so much!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hearing the Dragon Quest music in the background makes me want to play DQ11 again... b-but my DQ11 is on my ps4 and my ps4 is broken! Uuunghhh! 😣
I literally cried when she returned to the sea and turned to bubbles at the end of her sidequest. So saaad! 😢
I was really happy to see that she's still alive in act 3. Viva time travel! Ave time travel! 😋
@@Ser-Smiley I know that was an amazing thing to see! And such a great quest line in general!
@@TheRockLobsterMafia one day im gonna double dip and buy DQ11 for my switch for sure. It's too good. Playing it once is not enough! 😋😤
I played dragon quest on NES if that counts? I got dragon quest 11 on switch that I've never played if that counts??
Might seem like a dimb question....not tech savvy...do these switch games load from the cartridge like games of old or do they save all.the data to the switch....meaning i will.have to get an sd card at some point
Thank you
save data stored on the switch storage, you will need to get sd card for games that have huge data download (even if it's physical or not).
@@IzukuLuffyAsta much appreciated thank you
I thought the demo was neat, played it for a bit the other day. The repetitive mission progression sounds disappointing, and I also noticed what you mentioned about the towns/world feeling a bit lifeless at times. That was the first thing that caught my attention in the demo; where is everyone?!
youkai watch is the best
Got it physical day 1 at my local GameStop. Honestly I wasn't expecting much/wasn't very hyped for it. Although as a DQ fan, I absolutely knew it wouldn't disappoint. Now a good couple days in, I can confidently say that it's amazing. It feels very modern. Maybe not exactly DQ11 quality, but still a more than worthy entry in the series. Don't sleep in it! You'll be addicted to the gameplay (and story) immediately.
I love it so far.
Really fun eh? Mark
Damn is this addictive. Once I start reverse synthesizing, time is literally melting away.
The game looks super ugly, and whats up with really bad framerate while walking around?
Meh design looks like mid 3ds game, better play smt v
To bad it's so expensive.
Exactly. We share the same experience and thoughts here.
it’s actually been 30 years
@@MNIMnoob No don't say that, I don't want to be ancient
So basically anohter Monster joker i love it 😊
It’s probably my goty. Great game
Gets so much better with the synergies system. Mark
Sad to see this game lacking on a tech level when Treasures was good looking
Seeing games go up against Pokemon is like watching boxers fight Mike Tyson...We've all got hopes for the young pretender, but... I watch it through my fingers
😂
Even tho this series did the monster collecting thing first
Dragon quest is pokemons father. Check out dragon quest 5 to see where all your monster collecting games came from 😊
Hilarious
This didn’t age well. Lol jk
Thanks Mark, I’ve eagerly been waiting for your review of this game, as you guys’ reviews are the only ones I trust. I’ll give Dragon Quest Monsters a miss and will rather replay Dragon Quest Builders.
never played DQ, but this could be the game that gets me in
Have been playing this even in the older systems, and not a super fan of the size system as the old ones are easier to digest.
Agree with the DLCs being a little sketchy but still a very addicting game with or without it :)
One tip about the arena / tournament matches where you cannot control your monsters is that you can also change the frequency a monster uses his move, use it a lot, use it sometimes, and never.
Ur telling me there's no badasss big monsters in this game?! Wtf
@@Mysteryboy0007 I havent played the game for a few months so I am not sure what they added since, but at launch no, the biggest monster you could get was 2 slots.
Never played this series so I'm intrigued for sure!
Btw Dave the Diver got patched and the loading times ate MUCH faster now. Just in case you are planing to put a new all patched up Video out 😉
Oh nice!!
I like the idea of this being a DQ4 prequel, but damn I feel like this game could look and work so much better considering how good DQ11 was ported
I just love the new synthesis mechanic! now without polarity to think of, you could fuse anything with anyone!
Are you creating a new monster using this method?
@@BarnzTT it's DQM's gimmick, comparable to evolution in pokemon, by sacrificing 2 monsters you get 1 that is more powerful than what you used to fuse it
@@kaikosolano8172 So the synthesized monsters are not seen in the wild?
@@BarnzTT Depends, some monsters can only be made through synthesis, but you can also find many in the wild. Synthesized monsters are far better than those in the wild, even if they're the same species
@@kaikosolano8172 Thanks.
I might try the demo.. Look interesting..
Looks really good
for me monsters has always been the best trainer out there better than pokemon better than shin megami tensei better than digimon just the best ive played every monsters and joker game and the dark prince is by far the best of the bunch sure its missing some of the of my favorites form joker 3/pro but it added quite a few of my newer favorite monster bosses form dragon quest XI that it kinda makes up for it lol
for me what makes it the best is firstly mole hole even if it is dlc its such a huge improvement of the crap of the past games to re get monsters second is quick match online battles theyre great and a great source of seeds and monsters with unique skillsets (got a rank b monster today with perfect speller and supreme healer which im guessing are endgame sets considering what they offer) and it not needing a online sub to access and thirdly and lastly everything is obtainable solo no trading no online bullcrap with pokemon im done after the main story i dont give two craps about online batting/trading and theres no point is trying to 100% a pokemon game because as i know ill never be able to do it because of my playstyle
Get 1,2,&3 on switch!
How did you get 7 and 8 on your Switch?
@@Ludwig1970I was specifying DQ 11 on Switch, because I know it was released on other platforms. The first ones listed, I have on my DS.
@@randallrutherford1384waiting for those remasters lol
I'm going to wait for a sale on this one. Dragon Quest Treasures left a bad taste in my mouth and I get bored of the Pokemon style grind quickly.
Wasn't this a ds game? I think it was
It's a long running spinoff series, but the DS games were the most well known and also the last to get localized until now.
Well you may be referring to the joker series. The series started way back on the gb
From the review I was expecting high 60s-low 70s, so 79% came as a suprise! Will probably pick this up on a sale. Just nabbed DQ treasure for £25 on Amazon sale so have plenty to do!
So vanilla. The game is another 20-30 fps disaster, so let's give it 15/20 for perfomance. Do you even need the first 10 of 20?
I am really wanting something other than pokemon. But how does this one stack against coromon or nexomon?
so in the tournament its pretty much like Monster Rancher then?
Hearing the DQ music in the background just gives me warm fuzzy feelings, lol
The thing i like is that Psaro is the main villain of Dragon Quest 4, and this game gives you an insight as to what he was up to while the chosen ones were trying to save the world. Knowing the plot makes watching the bond between Psaro and Rose grow that much more depressing.
My first DQ game eas actually monster joker one on the DS Lite, good times and memories 😁
Feels just like Dqm Joker for ds
Been excited for this one there’s been so little coverage on it once it’s come out though so cheers for the review
*Spoiler
For example, you're asked to give up your demon blood, but rejection in doing so equates to you wanting to destroy humanity even if there was no precedence prior.
Gameplay 18/20 for a game that plays itself. Okay buddy.
Also graphics look like made for the N64 and it runs like sht.
I've been waiting for something like this since dqmj and Dqmj2.
Still sad they never gave us a legal way of playing dqmj3.
Lewis Jennifer Young Kimberly Davis Patricia
Pokemon has really lowered the bar. What is up with the graphics and 14fps? I'm just gonna wait for the steam release I can wait.
idk, performance wise and visuals-wise, it's like a cross between Sword and Shield's sort of older cel-shaded look with none of Scarlet and Violet's more modern shaders, smaller areas, and similar performance. Personally, I don't care but to call a spade a spade this runs about as poorly as Scarlet and Violet, and yes the Switch is a large part of the problem. Any game that has a lot of AI characters rendering on-screen at once causes the Switch to shit itself.
If you purchase a physical copy can you purchase the dlc or is the dlc only available for the digital deluxe edition? 😮
In both the Switch eShop & Nintendo Website; I saw the DLC as separate buys, bought digital
Except for the Prince Pack, only available via Digital Deluxe it seems
You’re kidding right? Pokémon was literally inspired BY Dragon Quest.
