I am learning Japanese and one reason I am excited to learn is that I want to know about the history and culture that doesn't make it over the language barrier. So many internet phenomena, memes, jokes, stories that either haven't or cannot be translated. Another reason is the music being made is just so good. To be able to experience the music and have it emotionally resonate on a lyric standpoint is really exciting.

Gracias Steve!!

My friend studied Japanese. It's a very difficult language and that's why he decided to move to Israel from Russia and learn Hebrew, which I think is also difficult. I can't subtract English since childhood, I still use a translator. It seems that I understand the speech by ear, but I can not express my thoughts myself 😀

My main motive is that i see learning languages as part of a more wholistic approach to the acquisition of knowledge, as not every work of literature, history, philosophy, science, etc will be translated to English and while nothing is “untranslatable” there are interesting ways that languages differ in the way they express and even conceptualize various phenomena and thoughts which might be difficult to translate in both an efficient and natural-sounding way
I do not relate to the social aspect, though; I am an asocial language enthusiast

Language learning has been so useful to me. i can't even mention all the reasons i could fill an entire book with it. but i don't even know how i lived while only knowing 2 languages. things are so much better now. every day i have moments where me knowing languages like Spanish or Russian or Hindi or even smaller ones like Albanian or Catalan or Hungarian helps me with a lot of things in daily life. the world is becoming more multilingual.

English is my native language but I think much of that feeling that a lot of English speakers get is an illusion-as in, we think since English is such a commonly spoken language, we don’t need other ones. In fact, most native English speakers seem to feel the world revolves around English. When you start opening yourself up to other languages and cultures though, you see how untrue that is!

  • @barrysteven5964

One reason I always tell people when they say things like "what's the point? Everyone speaks English now" is that if you are speaking to somebody who speaks your language as well as their own but you only speak your own then you are always going to be dependent on the skills of others to compensate for your own lack of skills. That gives the other person the upper hand because you are dependent on them in an almost childlike way. Also, whether it's conscious or completely unconscious, it makes the other person feel they have the upper hand over you. They have the greater skills, you are dependent on them so they are in a stronger position. If you both speak each other's language then it doesn't actually matter which language you use, you are on an equal footing and they will regard you more as an equal.

For the opportunities languages bring to you, English allowed me to go on a two semester Erasmus in Ireland. I met two people that are now close to me.
The thing is that they are Hungarians and so for the fun of it I decided to move to Hungary for maybe a couple years.
I now live with my male friend and my female friend trapped me here by becoming my girlfriend 🤣
I was a nerdy boy who wanted to grow in this world and normal things were frightening to me, this experience in Ireland changed me, I''m much more confident, I have a job, a very good friend and a lovely girlfriend.
All of that is because of language learning, without English this would not have happened.
Now I'm learning Hungarian and I'm sure it will bring me other fantastic opportunities.

No doubt about that. Knowing different languages is incredibly profitable. My little sister who recently moved to the US while already spoken English, Spanish, French and Creole landed her a career in the banking industry with Wells Fargo.
Same story with me who self-taught English at an early stage. I worked for the US Embassy in my country. Currently I am studying Spanish for more opportunity in the US😅

Awesome video and I totally agree! One thing I would like to add about learning languages is that you really do learn about yourself. There are many instances where there just isn’t a way to translate something directly but when you learn a language well you learn how to express things about yourself that you couldn’t before. You discover new ideas and ways of being, especially when you immerse yourself in not just the language but the culture. This is one of those things that may not seem profound as a reason until you experience it for yourself, but I personally have found it very rewarding.

On my first day of my freshman comp class in college, my professor wrote this quote on the board: "The limits of my language are the limits of my world" - Ludvig Wittgenstein
This quote has strongly influenced my interest in learning languages throughout my life. I also enjoy the idea of "cracking codes" and learning new alphabets. I have wanted to learn the Cyrillic alphabet for many years. A friend at work recently told me that the Cyrillic alphabet was phonetic and I just jumped into it! Then, I realized there are several other languages that also use this alphabet (especially Ukrainian, which I am also sampling a bit).
I have recently started thinking of the idea that learning the same word in many languages is basically just learning another synonym of that word. I just have to line up all the right words together to speak a certain language.

I've always been interested in languages. I've always loved the sound of Spanish, but I've forgotten most is what I learned in school. Hopefully someday I can learn it fluently. I'm also working on improving my German because of my heritage, and I hope I can learn my family's language too. My first real self-study language, though, is Finnish. I started learning it 7 years ago because of music (one of my absolute favourite bands is Finnish), and it has brought me so many wonderful friends and experiences. For that, Finnish will always be special to me.

Although I am a geologist for decades, the most useful and interesting subject .I have ever studied was ‘Latin’ starting at the age of 13. Mandatory in our Montreal school. I kept studying it through it the school years when we moved to Europe ( once through correspondence) and have pursued it on and off over the decades. For every 00 kids ‘forced’ to take piano lessons, only a couple learn to love it. It’s the same with Latin. I’m privileged to be one of the few. Thank you M. Lemaire , my grade 8

All these reasons are quite sound, of course, although I should add something to the last reason. Yes, it helps to make friends and connect with others, but only if you yourself are someone who people want to get acquainted with in the first place. A foreign language is just an extention of who you are as a person. If all you do is learn languages and do literally nothing else and can barely talk about anything, nobody would really care because the only thing you have to share with others is that you speak other languages, but to what end? What can you talk about? The more you can talk about, the more likely you can find common ground with natives and therefore build connections and relationships with them. It's grounded in something besides the fact you share a language in common, and the more common ground there is, the better.

    Video Idea Suggestion:
I have been studying German diligently over the last 3 months or so, and i completely digested the 60 mini-stories, but right now i feel kinda lost, i don't know what content to work on, I enjoyed the mini-stories because I felt I was hand-walked through, in other words I was well guided, I had a finish line in mind which was the 60th mini-story, I knew what to do, but now I feel lost. What would you recommend for someone who has completed the 60 mini-stories and is on the cutting edge of the B1 level, I think it's worth a video : "What to do after finishing all the 60 mini-stories".
Another Video Idea : Since I have been studying Finnish over the last 6 years inconsistently, I have been struggling to find good and guided content to work on, so a good video idea would be "How To Study For Rare Languages When You Don't Have Good Resources", because that's been my biggest struggle in Finnish, but I made my way through and right now I can confidently say that I'm at the B2 level (after 6 years of struggle), by the way I started learning Finnish right around the time u started learning Greek

Yea while i don't think French will dominate the world is becoming way more multilingual. in the 2000s i only needed English and maybe French because of my region but now there is a lot of info that is not in English online and in real life things get more diverse too. anime is now very popular and people watch it in the original language. Korean movies too Spanish tv series Turkish tv series even Indian movies are starting to become popular world wide.
20 years ago only American and uk movies got popular internationally. if you wanted to use a computer back in the day you had to know basic English but now they have translated everything. but its unclear what country will dominate in the future the countries with the strongest armies. USA china Russia all have huge issues .and the more stable countries don't have strong armies japan and south Korea have shrinking populations. i guess it would be India then but they are a multilingual country so that would be interesting.

I don't like Joe Rogan either, but a lot of what you've said in regards to criticising him is simply not true. It seems like you dislike this person more because of their political views, and you are criticising them under a sort of veneer/guise of language education.
PS: I really dislike Joe Rogan, but I also dislike thinly veiled attacks on people under the guise of education / informing people. It's so disingenuous and is the type of thing that drives many to people like Joe Rogan.

Mostly I dislike people who are in the position of influencing others who use language poorly, don't speak coherently, use foul language and make simplistic statements based on little or no evidence. I have no idea what Rogen's political views are. His anti-science views re the covid vaccine and Ivermectin are not political, just anti-science and wrong. As for language learning and Alzheimers the situation is more nuanced.
      news.las.iastate.edu/2021/01/28/study-shows-learning-a-second-language-thwarts-onset-of-dementia/#:~:text=In%20the%20study%2C%20Grundy%20notes,dementia%20until%20later%20in%20life.
Through a meta-analysis of the data, the researchers discovered that the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease are halted by up to five years, on average, in people who fluently speak more than one language. The study did not substantially show that bilingualism deters Alzheimer’s disease incidence rates; only that it helps to delay symptoms.
“Bilinguals and monolinguals eventually show the same number of Alzheimer’s disease cases, but bilinguals tend to be able to stave off those symptoms for longer,” Grundy said. “That’s fascinating to me. Maybe the most surprising thing about the study is the consistency of the effect. It’s a very robust finding.”
In the study, Grundy notes that bilingualism does not prevent or reverse Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, it’s a form of cognitive reserve, like a demanding career or exercise, that strengthens and reorganizes the brain’s circuits, helping to fight off the initial symptoms of dementia until later in life. The authors state that bilinguals rely on the posterior and subcortical regions of the brain for more efficient processing of information than monolinguals, who depend on the brain’s more demanding frontal circuits as they age, thus exacerbating the onset of dementia.

@@goblinoide I also wanted to learn more but the truth is that the more you spread the less focused you will be, you can be C1 in a couple of languages or B2 in a multitude.

I absolutely love your content! To thank you so much for everything that you do! And of course an idiot like Joe rogan would think everyone would be better off If everyone spoke the same language but what he means by that is his language and no one else's. He makes my brain hurt!

Lobe your content, but you often mention Joe Rogan is scum. The antithesis of what most language learners are, open to differences, passionate about learning, curious aboutvother cultures etc.
