      Glad you dig this one I really love these I don’t know which one I like better the 60 or the 61 they’re both nice looking cars.. I’m into the weirdo cars in general 61 lancer has always been an acquired taste for me but it’s starting to grow on me like it’s bad I was like man this would look really cool in a wagon..

    In 1963, we made close friends at our new church with a family who had a 60 Pioneer sedan and we took it lots of places all over Colorado. The dad in the family called his Dart "small." And, across the street from us was a lady who had a 60 Polara with those cool reverse fins! In spite of all our snow storms, I never saw that Polara dirty. I think Leah walked to work so her car wouldn't suffer even a spot of mud.

    The "long ram" intake manifolds gave the engine more mid-range torque, which was what cars needed on the street for acceleration onto a highway, or for passing. Using shorter "ram" tubes gave more performance at higher RPM. The increased efficiency is indicated by the better fuel mileage figue for the 383 over the 361 with a conventional manifold.

      @@What.its.like. Those tuned manifolds actually cause positive pressure waves to develop in the runners which force the air/fuel mixture into the engine at certain RPM. That's why they are called "RAM" manifolds.

    My parents' first new car was a 1960 Dodge Dart Seneca. It was plain white 2 dr. coupe with a tan cloth/vinyl interior. It had the 225 slant 6 engine, which was new for 1960. The car had 3 options. TorqueFlite automatic, a padded dash and an AM pushbutton radio. I remember the hum the radio would make as it warmed up.
    One of the neighbors had a 1960 Dodge Dart Phoenix and the fins were taller. They would always joke with me pointing out that their Phoenix had taller fins than my parents' Seneca.
    There were actually 2 TorqueFlite automatics in 1960. The V8 cars still used the first TorqueFlite, 466, which was introduced on Imperials in the middle of 1956. It had a cast-iron case.
    The 1960 6 cyl. cars(also the first year of the slant 6), got the brand new all-aluminum cased A904 TorqueFlite. Though modified throughout it's production run(like first adding a parking pawl), the basic transmission was in production into the 2,ooo's. It was also the basis for Chrysler's first RWD overdrive automatic. My parents didn't have one problem with the slant 6 or the TorqueFlite A904.
    From 1957-on I only saw one Dodge that had a PowerFlite and the rest were all DeSoto's into their last year of production, which was also the last year for the PowerFlite. The PowerFlite may have still been on the books, but I believe the dealers were smart enough not to order in a new car with it. Anyway some GM's and Ford products had a 2-speed automatic as their basic or only automatic. Chrysler dealers had the opportunity to be one-up on the competition by not selling their cars with 2-speed automatics!
    When the car was a couple of years old, my parents had ARA air-conditioning installed. Like many of the early air-conditioning units of that time, it was located in the trunk on top of the axle hump. Both air intake and output air vents were on the package tray behind the back seat. It would freeze you out of the car(especially if you were in the back seat).
    That little slant 6 had plenty of power but it would vapor-lock when driving up into the mountains if you weren't careful.
    That year of Dodge still had a strong enough frame in the rear to mount a trailer hitch, which my father did. It had enough power that it had no problems pulling a trailer house and still drive the 55 mph speed limit on flat highways.
    Oh, top speed, my father barely broke the 100 mph mark as he had done with my grandparents' 1958 Chevy Biscayne which had a 235-6 and PowerGlide.
    My car choices? I'd go for the Dodge first and the Chevy 2nd. The Fords were so ugly for 1960 that I didn't want to be seen in them as a kid or even now as a senior-citizen.

    '57> Wonder year for DODGE/CHRYSLER/PLYMOUTH/DESOTO! The "NEW LOOK", forward look, the cars looked like they were going fast, just STANDING STILL!

      Yeah Virgil Exner was what the 50s are remembered for. Everyone thinks of the 57 Chevy as a 50s American icon when the rear end design is a carbon copy of a 1956 savoy rear end. Plymouth looks way better in my opinion and they look even better in the wide because they are rarely seen most rusted away decades ago.

    Wonderfully funny analogy of the tail fin craze from 1955 to 1961!! Yes 1961 was the hangover year with people getting tired of fins by then. Of course we love them now because automakers have no sense of style today! 😉

    My mothers first car was a 60 Dodge Dart Seneca, just a basic green 4dr sedan with a slant 6. A few years later she got a big upgrade to a 65 Dodge Polara 500 convertible with a 383!

      @Richard ... thinking back, I remember the slant 6, the 318, and the 383 as *_*ALL*_* being good engines. And the Torque Flight was a good transmission, I believe.
      It's hard to believe (if my memories are correct-and I'm sure _somebody_ will correct me if they're not)-that Chryslers in the early '60s, being GOOD cars, they were #3.

      @@josephgaviota the 60s Mopar engineering was the best. The quality control sucked and rust could be a problem if you didn’t keep it clean in the winter. My father put a lot of miles on his cars, although he traded them frequently so many didn’t get to high mileage. Some did.

    During the making of the "Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C." TV show, Sergeant Carter drove around in a 1960 "Phoenix" in Red with white t and red interior. I do like all 3 1960 choices, but I'm a bowtie guy, so I have to go with the Impala. I will tip my hat to the Galaxie for nice styling! Music? I do like the "Foundations". They had their number one hit in 1969 "Build me up buttercup".

      As I recall. Gomer was taking care of the car and it got stolen. Just as Gomer found it, something heavy dropped on it and flattened it. Sgt. Carter then got a new Dodge Coronet or something like that at the end of the show.

    I love this funky cool car! Love the design, and the interior is supreme! Although I'm a big Galaxie fan, and it would be hard to turn one down, i would pick the Dart, and would be cruising along enjoying sll of those great performers! 😎 I would have definitely gotten name that tune, but watching late so, but it's a really cool tune!😎

    The 60 Dart is a great looking car. Everything pulls together well. The 61 had a sad face. If you ever see a 61, get down and check out the rear- the most bizarre set of swoops and angles created by those reverse fins. A neighbor had a 60 Phoenix 2 door hardtop on the street for years. Even as it deteriorated it was still a great looking car.

    The slant 6 engines of the 70s era were bulletproof. My grandfather was a big Mopar guy and had nothing but 225 slant sixes. He preached to all about how reliable they were. He had 74 Dart and a 74 Swinger which was basically the same car. Love the one in this video, full size loud and proud. Easily the coolest interior in a 60s Dodge.

    first car I remember my father had was a dart Pioneer, not as nice as the phoenix obviously. This brings back memories.

    The 1960 and 1961 Dodge Dart were the equivalent to the full-size Plymouth of those model years. Sales of the Dart were actually higher than the Plymouth in the 1960 model year (Plymouth had oversized tail fins that model year that were generally unpopular). The 1960 Dodge Matador/Polara and 1961 Dodge Polara all sold poorly mainly due to controversial styling and are very rare now.

      @@What.its.like. what i liked the most...in high school,i kept it fueled because i set up a carpool....had 6 girls who would give me gas money for rides home,because my car was considered "cool"...and more who wanted in,but thats all the passengers it would fit...
      what i liked least.....it was 17 years old by the time i got it(1977),and the steering box was worn out....so it had about 1/3 of a turn play in the steering...but all in all,it was a good car.

      Awesome thank you so much for sharing those memories, I picked my kid up from school yesterday and the cars in the lot were totally different than when I was a kid. I live in the sticks wouldn’t have it any other way. Country shook there was a grand wagoneer in the parking lot that’s a $100,000 car crazy there wasn’t any cars older than 12 year old I drove a car that was the same age as me =) some of my friends had 70s cars crazy how much things changed

    The 1960 Phoenix, hard top, was my first car. Red and white two tone, fins, chrome, and big enough to eat Volkswagens whole I loved that car.

    My first car, purchased 1966, Seneca 318 with TorqueFlite. BTW, pictured 318 looks like it might be an LA, my Dart had the 318 Poly, 2bbl, single exhaust. Poly had different valve cover design.

      I wish I would’ve squared up the dash differently like shot it in a more natural way if that makes any sense I was at a car show doing these a car shows it’s weird cause people are looking at you as you’re climbing through the car they’re asking you if it’s your car and why you’re touching it. This episode I had to over dub everything because the DJ was literally three cars over

    The 1961 Dodge Dart was criticized at the time for its very low taillights that drivers found difficult to see from behind. As a result, a mid-year addition were the small round auxiliary red taillights mounted higher up the rear quarter panels.

      The 1961 Dodge got the ugly stick eventually resulting in Virgil Exner being fired and replaced with Elwood Engel who was hired away from Ford to replace him.

      @@1575murray It was actually the introduction of the 1962 Dodge Dart and 1962 Plymouth that resulted in Exner's termination as chief of design. Dealers were given a preview of those models in the Summer of 1961...many dealers bitterly complained and some of them quit their franchises.

      @@1575murray Exner was highly creative and did not mimic other designers. His earlier themes were more popular with the public...not nearly as true with the last couple of model years. Also, Chrysler's upper management did not serve as a check and balance to his extreme concepts.

    The beltline moulding or chrome side trime seen at 10:17 appears to be virtually identical in design to the much larger chrome side trim seen on the 1958 Ford. Hard not to conclude that the Dodge design board borrowed that look from the previous year's Ford.
    As for which of three cars I would rather have, I'll take that 1960 Ford Galaxie in a heartbeat.

    Before there was an AMC Matador or a Pontiac Phoenix, Dodge had both nameplates. Who would think? Since I don’t pay attention to such things, not I.
    I don’t know why the rear view mirror on the dash was ever a thing. It must have been great for checking the kids fighting in the backseat but not much good for seeing who was approaching your bumper.

    WYR? 1: Dodge, hands down, one of my favorite years. WYR? 2: Buddy Holly.
    1960-61 Dodges it was called D-500 Ram Induction.
    Ps. Ram Induction. In a four-stroke engine, every time the intake valve closes, the air-fuel charge packs up behind it. It happens because the charge has both mass and inertia, at 6,000 rpm it happens 50 times per second. Each time, a reflecting pressure wave is sent back up the intake passage toward the atmosphere at the speed of sound.
    If adjust the length of the intake passage to the engine’s desired operating rpm, it pressurizes the incoming air-fuel charge by a few significant percent. It’s a bit like supercharging, but without the mechanical losses associated with turning a pump.
    The formula: N x L = 84,000, N is the desired operating rpm: L is the length of the runner in inches. The result? An improvement of about 8 to 10 percent at higher RPM's.
    It still exists - now called pressure wave tuning, used industry wide.

    In my life I’ve never heard a better metaphor for the styling changes from 55 to the 60s than party to hangover - brilliant sir! Virgil clearly had passed his prime. Choices - 60 Impala, and Buddy Holly. Thanks for sharing an interesting and often forgotten car. ~ Chuck

    Ahhh Jay!: The finny Dodges! Kind of homely but intriguing at the same time. I have a weird reason that I like THIS car. On the series Gomer Pyle USMC. THIS was Sgt. Carter's car in what was probably the FUNNIEST of the whole series. Gomer is tasked with taking care of the Sarge's BABY (Red 1960 Dodge dart Convertible just like the one you show). Of course when Gomer goes to get in the car to drive it back to base's it's GONE, stolen! When Gomer finally finds it the car is parked in front of a construction site. He's on the phone to Duke at the base when he looks up and sees the steel wrecking ball! It comes down and crushes the car! Bad for the car, but the look on Jim Nabor's face is incredible! Look that episode up (from 1966, I think). Anyway, who doesn't like the look of the cross ram dodge induction system!! COOL! WYR# 1 gotta go with the Galaxie, those 390's were NICE. #2 Going with Buddy! LOVE his music. (But you got to love Elvis too!)

    I had a 1961 Dodge polara with a 361 V8. I consistently got between 18 and 19 and a half miles a gallon.

    Just about every passenger car in that time period had some “glamour “ going on but Dodge - Plymouth was pretty radical compared to the Ford or Chevrolet of those same years. Yet there were plenty of people who were Mopar fans who liked the styling (just like Edsel fans). Personally, I rather liked the full sized look of these’59’s. As a kid I recall seeing a few around my home town - a green four door sedan and a blue two door hardtop.       Glad you dig this episode. And the darts sold well they produce way more darts they did anything else like they didn’t sell that many matadors or Polaris in comparison the other crazy thing is how the trim lines are broken down. You can only get a wagon in certain trims you could only get a four-door sedan in certain trims each trim had different car body styles on offer

    As a kid, I SUPER liked the "Cross Ram Intake" ... somehow that just seemed the COOLEST thing on the planet to me.
    I wonder now, as an adult, if that was actually efficient ... I mean when the throttle changed position, it would take some amount of time for that changed fuel/air mixture to get into the cylinders.

      It creates a ram effect, especially at higher RPM, increasing the intake velocity. Over simplifying, it creates a supercharging effect.

    That 1960 Ford Galaxie had a lot of issues, as did the 1957. People who traded their cars every 3 years, and got 2 bad Fords in a row, switched brands. My dad had a '60 Dodge Pioneer, with a 318 cu in. 2 barrel, 3 on the tree. It was a nice car. I think its styling was the best of the three.

      That’s a sick looking engine I heard they could be finicky the ones that didn’t have the long tubes with cross ram that came later we had a Plymouth Savoy last year at Classic car dealership that I worked at and it was really finicky if it ran it ran great when it did it run it was a nightmare.

    I think I will take the 1960 Dodge Dart Phoenix. Of course a Polara/Matador would be really nice, well equipped of course but these are in a different price range, mid level I believe. I'll take all the music. What I really like is the 1960 Plymouth Fury 4 door hardtop, big fins and all. Both the Dodge and Plymouth are good looking cars for 1960, IMO then the bottom fell out. 1961 was horrible then they got small. Oddly enough I do like the top of the line Plymouth Sport Fury 2 door hardtop for 1962.

      I’ve been looking for the big fin Plymouth cars I know a guy who has them and well he had them in his collection I’ve been in talks with him for almost a year now, our schedules just don’t line up. Lol I’ll keep looking I really want to find a 57 rambler rebel this year I know of a couple of them but they’re all far away lol

    Oh, and Virgil Exner was in charge of the design department (Director of Styling) and only oversaw other designers in the department (Studio). He gave them direction and the "green light" on projects. (source); Virgil Exner Visioneer 2007 book by Peter Grist

    In '75, I bought a '60 Dodge Phoenix 4 door hardtop that I bought for $35! It ran (the "318" Poly spherical "B" was VERY TIRED!) At the same time, I owned a '60 Chevy BelAir 4 door sedan. The Dodge was built twice as well as the Chevy all over!

    Late to the party, I was out of the country when this was released. Between the '60 and '61 full-size Dodges, to me no contest, the '60 by a mile. Most of Virgil Exner's designs blow me away, but not the '61 and '62 full-size Dodges ('61 Dart, '62 Custom 880).
    The '62 Custom 880 was a stopgap. Chrysler downsized the Dart and the Fury because they thought GM would downsize their cars (they did not). Dodge dealers had a fit because they had no full-size car to sell, so Chrysler grafted a '61 Dart to a '62 Chrysler Newport to create the Custom 880. Styling was refined for '63 and '64 until the completely new '65 models, designed by Elwood Engel, were released.

    It's quite possible that that particular car could have been special ordered with that engine in it from the factory. One thing about Mopar is they were always very good at accommodating somebody who wanted to order something like that. In fact you could walk into any Mopar dealerships parts counter and pretty much buy everything you needed to build a Mopar race car up fron parts they sold over the counter.
    I always liked that Weezer tune. In fact, I remember when Windows 95 first came out that was the included song they had to demonstrate their multimedia capabilities. Buddy, Holly Weezer. With the video being from Happy Days at Arnold's with all the cast members and Weezer on stage playing in there.

    There was a 41 Grahm Hollywood at a car show in Indianapolis many, many years ago. Dark blue, two door coupe. The owner said that Grahm bought the body molds of of Cord when they went out of business. Beautiful automobile.

      Hupp bought the dies and shared them with graham, hupp paid 900 million for the cord dies that was their Hail Mary, they didn’t have a factory to build the cars and that’s why they shared it with Graham because Graham still had a factory to build cars in, hupp didn’t

    Dad owned a 1960 Dart Senica Wagon with the Slant Six and three on the tree, I learned to drive and wrench on that car, took my wife on our first dates and prom in it and beat the living blazes out of it. Would love to have it back in my life again.

    1) Dodge 2) uhmmm, none of the above. Supremes? LOL... I think the Polara/Matador had the coolest fins that year. As far as interiors go, Exner had the most stylish dashboards ever created. But, again... ugh... that "commander seat" or whatever they call it. One thing Mopar had though that no one else did? That 225 slant 6. That engine was bulletproof. Was almost impossible to kill it. Usually the bodies would rot out leaving just the beating heart... lol... Here in NY, shoving a block of 4x4 to keep the snout up when the torsion bar mounting rotted out was a common thing in Mopars to keep them on the road. In my younger days, I used to run demo derbies, and if you had a heat with someone who had a 225, the only way to really take it out was to hit the front wheels hard enough to snap the torsion bars in hopes it would drag the front frame into the dirt and dig itself in while you took it out. I've seen more than one folded up like a taco unable to move, yet the engine was still running. And yup, happened to me in a '78 LeBaron.

    My preference would be the 1960 Galaxie because my father had a Canadian Meteor which was just like Galaxie, and his was a 1960. I also liked the 1961 Dart better than the 1960 model in all ways. My uncle bought a 1960 Polara which got destroyed in a collision with an impaired driver in 1963. I think of that car whenever I see a 1960 Dodge.

    You showed an LA engine for the 318 which wasn't installed until 67 but the 273 arrived in 64 .
    The 318 should have been a poly engine for 60-61.

    WYR #1: The Dart you present is _surprisingly_ interesting ... and the '60 Ford had a lot of interesting design ideas ... the '60 Chevy ... not interesting _at all_ (to my eye).

    The third choice is easy. #3 goes to the Impala. #2 is much harder. I like both the Dart Phoenix and the Ford Sunliner. I think the sunliner is a very nice styled design. With some taste elegant low key design features. But the Dart is over the top. Both in the space age jetsons look of the interior and the outrageous flashiness of all the exterior lines, that at first glance look a bit out of place and wrong looking. But when you stand back and take it all in, it’s just so cool and not everyone will like it. In fact, many didn’t and still don’t. So the Ford goes in the number 2 spot and the Dart finishes in first place.
    The more I look at all the shapes and little details, the more I like it. Even though at the end of the day, it’s way over done. The 1960 model got it just right, the 1961 messed it up and just misses the style and proportions. It’s shapes don’t go together as well as the 60 model.

    They are good looking cars but they are unibody construction and I don't like a big car without a full chassis, that's why not many still around they were rust proned I broke the back end off a sixty Plymouth Fury a few years back it had been sitting for 35 years and it was sunk in the ground the body was solid but floor was gone and chassis rails was long gone and I didn't know till I took a bumper jack and went to raise it.

      @@What.its.like. exactly buddy it looked so good on the outside but after the back end broke off they junked it and when they pulled it through the field the back end was trailing behind it longer than the car was long because it all pretty much just fell apart the seats went through the floor and when the car was being pulled it all pretty much fell apart from the front door back and it was a 4 door but with the rockers being gone the back door back it just went to pieces that's why I never wanted a unibody construction car especially a large car like that..I wouldn't have one..I have a jaguar vanden plas 99 model and they are unibody construction and I constructed a full perimeter chassis for it and made it stronger.

    You know, this is the first time I can't make up my mind about which car I would prefer. I would take all three, but I'd listen to Buddy Holly in any of them.
    I like the 1960 WAY over the 1961 Dodge. I think the '61 Dodge and Plymouth are the two ugliest cars of the '61 lineup IMO.
    Have you ever seen Coldwarmotors on RUclips? Its creator Scott took the lower section of a 1960 Dodge sedan to restore a 1960 Plymouth Fury coupe. Which he did an excellent job...the only thing that sucked was the body of the '60 Dodge was actually quite restorable 😢....

    Hey Jay, keep your eyes open for a 1938-39 Shark nosed Graham during your travels. Their a pretty rare car Down Under, I only know of two and both have been Hot Rodded. Would be a rare car to feature if you can find one.

Can't wait for that one Jay, their one of those cars that when you see it for the first time you think it's really ugly then you relies how different it was to anything else around at the time then when you see one that's been Street Rodded you fall in love with the car. It a big front so when those big tyres go on it and it's sitting in the weeds it looks brutal. Like most body styles the Coupe is normally everyone's favourite.
      The 1936 Studebaker Dictator Coupe is a beautiful Car, it would be a great car to cover on your channel as well.
      We manufactured and sold the 62 model Dart here in Australia as an Chrysler Valiant R series with a few minor cosmetic changes, they only came in a slant 6. The first Mopar V8 273 didn't end up in a Chrysler until the release of the VC model in 1966

    The 60 was of its time, but handsome in a masculine way. The 61 was a mishmash with a front clip that did not relate to the rest of the car at all - not successful. The Dart cannibalized Plymouth badly as it competed directly against it. Indeed Dodge sold significantly more Darts than Plymouth did of its Savoy/Belvedere/Fury models. Plymouth was kept alive by the Valiant. The 'real' Dodges - in traditional medium standard market - were the Matador/Polara, and they were outsold >7:1 by the Darts - Dodge essentially retreated from the upper medium market after that (subsequent Polaras were considerably downgraded, especially post 61) and wouldn't really return until the late 60's with the rise of the Monaco - and some would argue still did not. Interesting that Ex was hired by K.T. Keller - the guy who insisted people wore hats in middle American and gosh darn it they would in his Chryslers too. These 60 Dodges were also much more roadable than the equivalant Ford or Chevy. WYR - the 60 Phoenix hands down.

    Last one I saw was in the Van Staden brother’s laydown yard in Bloemfontein, SA around 2008. These interesting guys built the Zambezi dam and had all manner of vintage trucks and cars in differing states of preservation. It seemed they’d buy a car , use it, then park it up and keep it. I wonder what happened to their stuff as they were getting on when we met them. They had a 1950’s Autocar truck that one of their drivers got clocked at 120mph in!

      Yeah I didn’t get to go in the backseat of this one there is too many people watching me I don’t know I get weirded out when I do it in front of a bunch of people as a crowd I didn’t do the glove box test because that was his personal car if you’re not though going back to Classic Automall not this week coming up but next week plus going to do some really cool stuff
