  • James Taylor uses a complicated method to get his guitar sounding "sweet." He is right. It is a great tuning. This Peterson Strobe tuner makes it very easy to do. It is an automatic setting. No need to calculate 'cents' with this tuner's automatic setting. Your guitar has never sounded so good.

Thanks Dick. I am 65 and played in the '70s too. The struggle is real. I've always liked the old style Peterson strobe tuner, but it was huge, heavy and inconvenient. It's a real dinosaur today. I am SO happy you posted this new version. I like the clip-ons, but this sounds like a wonderful solution to get the reliability of a Peterson as a clip-on.

All my life I either set high E with a fork and worked my way down, or used a boss tu-12 (that I still have.) The other day friend and I were talking tuners, and he said "Oh my school had this strobe tuner." I didn't know what a strobe tuner was last Friday. I educated myself real quick. Seeing Spaceman (Ace Frehley) plugged into a strobe was enough. Got this one today. I set it to "ACU" and put on my spanish yamaha. Hoooooo boy.... I don't think I"ll sleep tonight, she sounds so good! How did I live through the 80s and not had ever seen not one strobe?! Now I won't use anything but!

I own this tuner and can tell you it’s the best tuner I’ve used. I have other clips and iPhone tuners including the Petersen app. This clip is the best. The thing I love about it is I can go online and setup custom tunings and then download them into this tuner with a little usb cord. You have to register the tuner to get access. That is the other big plus for me.
I’ve tried the sweetened tuning but actually liked standard on my guitar better. One thing to watch out for is it will train your ear to detect the slightest tuning issues. This thing is definitely the most accurate I’ve tried. I can tell my tuning is ever so slightly off but my other tuners will say it’s in tune while this one will show it’s just a little off. Worth every penny!

There are an infinite number of ways to tune a guitar. After you boil it down, what you're doing is tuning intervals- and they can be done all over the guitar, in all positions. Jame's method is going to wind up with out of tune intervals, at some point on the neck. Knowing what intervals are most tunable is a good place to start.

I bought the Peterson after horrible experiences with the T.C. Electronics clip on tuner. (I bought 2 TC Electronics units from Amazon and BOTH were broken right outta the box! On one, unit, the strobe mode didn't work and on the other, the LED screen didn't light up every square).
I've been liking the Peterson for a couple of reasons, First, it turns every which way, so I can see the darned thing. Second, it's accurate. I
tried Equal Temperament and Sweetened Temperament. I like equal temperament better! Maybe I'm just so used to hearing it. Also, James Taylor tends to play a lot i G and D. In the key of D, you almost HAVE to detune the first string if you don't want that sharp sounding F# top string poking out.

I use to use a 440HZ Tuning fork, was a nightmare, when the break in the set was due, use to go somewhere as quiet as possible and tune the guitar to the tuning fork, "F...... nightmare"!!, like you said, the electronic tuners came along, they have got better and better over the years that Peterson tuner FANTASTIC, every guitar player should have one. I practice, say 10 minutes, before a practice session, put the guitar out of tune and try to tune it by ear to the best i can then check it on the Peterson strobe tuner, would never get it spot on in a million years, it's good ear training.

the sweet tunings are an added advantage... by design, strobe tuners are THE most accurate tuners available. they tune perfect to 1/10 a cent. that's 1000 divisions per fret. the circular type display stops when in tune and is the most accurate way to display tuning because 10 LEDs or pointer needles are inherently inaccurate when fine tuning. All instrument manufacturers, piano and orchestral technicians use strobe tuners. The Peterson Strobe tuner company is 70 years and running.

Thanks for the video. I have to add a minority opinion here. I bought this tuner and HATE it. The tuner is far more accurate than any guitar strings, so it is constantly moving. It's impossible to know if tuning is optimal. This is the problem with all strobe tuners. I really want a tuner that is AS accurate as guitar strings so I can quickly see that it is right on. I don't get the idea of sweetened tunings either. You can't turn an equal-tempered instrument into a true-tempered instrument with tunings. The fixed frets defeat that idea. Obviously opinions vary. Glad you enjoy yours.

I think JT's sweet tuning is for when he uses a capo, as the pressure of the capo pulls the strings a little sharp, and the lowered cents compensate for this.

    • @guitarslim56

This Petersen Strobe tuner has transformed my guitars into new guitars. I have never been able to tune my guitar accurately in all positions. I used to spend a long time tampering my guitar to get the best tuning in all positions. But with this Petersen Strobe they become accurate in all positions easily, even with older strings. I used to blame it on the strings, but no, it's the combination of inaccurate tuner (I used KLIQ before), my ears and the tampering technique.
I can't use the "sweetener" feature on this Strobe for my classical guitars; it doesn't give me an accurate tuning. I think it's meant for steel string acoustic where the music demands different varieties of tone colors.

I wonder how the new V-Class bracing that Taylor Guitars introduced will affect the need for a tuner that compensates for intonation issues? According to Taylor the guitars that use this new bracing have much better intonation, which allows you to play chords with a voicing that you normally would avoid.

Hi dallguire! Thanks for such an interesting video. What about if you play harmonica? Will this kind of tuning sound okay even with a harmonica that is of course tuned to perfect pitch? I own about a $50 "Polytune" clip-on made in Denmark. I remember once my piano tuning service tuned my piano he was a little drunk. When he was drunk he suddenly said, first time ever, that he tunes pianos something like a 1/2 cent low. I wondered why until I played and it gives the notes a little bit of a growl that's interesting as the notes deteriorate or sustain. I play with the sustain pedal down a lot.
The next time he wasn't drunk and was tuning it right on. I asked him about the 1/2 cent flat (I think that's what it was flat or sharp, not sure) and he acted like that was totally foreign to him ha! He wasn't forgetful elderly but he was about 50 or 55, old enough his daughter was about 13 or so. From that point on he wasn't drunk when he came and went back to tuning it right on. Is that what James is doing, tuning it slightly off so you get this kind of lovely but strange growling sustain?
Really, because I tune my guitar right on, except my 3rd G string I tune that string a cent or two flat or otherwise it sounds off. So tuned flat it then it sounds very nice. I have to admit, my ear is so accustomed to right on your tuning when you tuned it the James way and played it bothered me. I'm only amateur so I don't have nearly the experience playing like you do and wondering if others might experience the same with the James way of off-tuning, maybe resulting in a pleasant growl to the sustain.

No, it's a "sweetened tuning" made by James Taylor. It's like a sort of "well temperament" applied to regular acoustic guitar, making some chords and keys sound better (more "in tune", close to "just" intervals).
Aside from that, the "432 hz thing" only makes sense under Pythagorean Tuning, to make "middle C = 256 hz" (to do the math easier).
