  • High performance surfboards are a category that many of us every day surfers struggle with. They're tighter, 'knifey' and require good waves to really come alive.
But they allow for potentially the highest level of surfing that many of us will get to demonstrate.
It's something I've always wrestled with. For too long I've relied on the effortlessness of a shorter, squashed board but then been limited substantially once the waves get good. This video is a first step toward exploring the realm of HPSBs a little more :)

I see guys out with their HP boards daily in SoCal. They struggle to even pop up because the waves are too small, or flat mush, or whatever. I'm pissing them off on my midlength and fish board. They think I'm a kook, but I'm surfing while they speed bump it. HP is good for waves that deserve it.

I got a forget me not, 5,11 with 24.8L. In 4 years of having it I got to surf it twice. Went down to a point break (Rodiles) on the last swell with 3m faces that session and that day just justified having the board for me. Stuck to the water like a knife as you bottom turn and turn of the top it sounds like a lightsaber just cutting through the water. Cant get over the fact that I could’ve had something less like a step up so I could have a board in between the Fmn and my Monsta box but it’s a beautiful board for a beautiful day.

It’s difficult being a bigger guy that rides shorter boards! The typical HPSB is usually at lower volume limit, to get anything around around the volume range you’ve got so much rail in the water. A 6’2 on a recent trip felt so long, guess it’s a mental thing!!

If you put the board down gently it's not going to do anything. Give me a break. But hey....try an experiment...get two or three surfboards of the same model size etc....have a friend put a few random minor surface scratches on the bottom of one of them. Have your friend hand you off scratched/not scratched boards 40 times. You go surf them 20 times each without looking at or touching the bottoms. Make your guesses as to which is which. RUclips it so we can see if your cheating. Let's see if you can tell a difference between the two. If you can tell beyond a reasonable random guess level...say 75% of the time? Then maybe your point will have some value.

Great review Kale! I was literally just about to pull the trigger on the Monsta 10….i love the look of the Schooner and would order one if there was more volume in the shorter sizes. I’d need to go 6’1/6’2 to get the vol I need but would want the board at 5’9/10…

Let's face it, if you don't live on the North Shore of Hawaii or target your surf trips for the heaviest swell/wave situations, or are under 30 with at least 12 twelve years surfing experience under your belt, 90% of your surfing will NOT need a " HPSB". I am 63 Now and stopped riding them in my mid 50's and even in my 20's - 40's gave up wave counts for the odd " power nugget" just to throw one turn. The late 80's and 90's set surfing backwards with an over emphasis on using HPSB's. At 6' /180lbs and in my " sunset performance" surfing years, I'm totally stoked on my 6'3" JS Black Baron 2.1, 6'8" JS Big Baron, and my 6'6" Sharpeye Disco Cheater. They all deliver the goods in groveling 2' to 6' power surfing here in Northern Cali - the real Norcal - North of the GGB. Had my best session of the year on the Big Baron in overhead hollow beachie runners! That board is SICK!
