Hey! I love your tutorial and and thanks for the paint list, how do you dilute your paints? Are you dipping in water before you go into your pot? Thanks!
Thanks Garth! It depends on the paint in question, so if it’s Contrast then I use it straight from the pot or dilute it using Contrast Medium and the ratios shown in the videos. For regular paints I just use the dampness of the brush itself. As I clean the brush quite a bit it holds enough water to give me the right consistency.
Sorry I didn’t respond to this earlier, I didn’t get a notification for it! You could totally just follow the Contrast steps here and have a great looking Battle Ready Black Templar. I sort of built this off a friend’s Black Templars who are painted to a Battle Ready standard using a similar method.
God, I hate how many cool space marine chapters there are. Every time I am settle for a paint idea, it is always "But then there is this awesome looking chapter".
Maybe Deathwatch? Then you can do all of them forever! Though I know exactly what you mean... I’m struggling to stay focussed on my beloved Blood Angels
I like the warm purplish black. I've never seen that before. Very nice. With aquilas, as with lots of Black Templars colours, there's a lot of variations. I use bone for everyone except models that look more flashy such as captains, Bladeguard Veterans or Primaris Chaplains and I use gold for them. For gun casings and chainswords I've recently been using Gal Vorbak Red highlighted with Screamer Pink and the burgundy colour works well, like a very muted red.
I’m glad you like the black, it’s something I’ve been experimenting with for a while now. I love that every Black Templars player I’ve met seems to do their chest eagles and weapon casings slightly differently, it seems very fitting!
Great video as always! I'm just wondering, would you ever consider painting some Alpha Legion models, I'd love to see how you tackle that metallic turquoise!
Nice 👍🏻 The jury is out on the Aquila, I’ve seen some that don’t have it. Silver for squaddies and gold for characters is my pref but I never considered bone so that’s a new option I’m 100% grateful for!
The official GW aquilla was always white. I don’t know if they’ve changed it, but I do the same as you, silver/metal for line troops, gold for commanders. My rule is the higher your status, the more gold you get. Awesome work as always!
For the Aquila, if nothing else, I'd just point out that the current Codex shows it as a light bone color. That's the best source I could find honestly.
Great video - have just got my Templars box set and this really helps! Where did you get the parchment for the backpack though? It looks great on the mini.
I tend to remove the imperialis/aquila when painting Templars. In Helsreach, Grimaldus says, "we do not wear his symbol, we ARE his symbol" If I feel like keeping it tho I tend to use castellan bronze, the Templars like bronze
Love it! I should probably have done the same thing but this was ages ago! Before even the refresh range came out… They’re calling to me again though at the moment
Thanks, I made an atempt at using black templar cholor scheme on my ScE before i saw this. Wil definitly try this out to se how much better it wil become 😄
I have tried similar recipes to great effect. I however do the following different: 1. Put in glazes / highlights after base stage 2. Use a gloss wash _ usually null oil 3. Then apply the contrast Just find you get incredible depth and makes the highlights look more realistic this way whilst also being super crisp still. Love your series though, fantastic schemes.
Yes! The best Chapter! A question for you - do you think this black over purple would work well for the Direchasm warband Khagra’s Ravagers? I’ve got them to paint and I’m not sure how to approach them.
I love the color of the power armor! It is beautiful! I am interested in using it for my deathwatch. I am wondering if it is possible to paint the rest of the model with base paints and not contrasts? Would there be a varying intensity due to the natures of the paints? Thank you!
Hopefully you still check old comments. So I love the method used here to get the black color, but I absolutely dread the meticulous edge highlighting and given my time constraints and mildly shaky hands I'm not feeling super confident in trying that across an entire army... Is there any alternative method you might recommend that would still allow the use of this contrast method and still provide some level of highlighting on the already too-dark-to-shade color? Softly drybrushing the edge grey perhaps? Or is it impossible to go without and I'm just kind of screwed? :
It's entirely possible that's for sure. You'd be better off probably spraying it black and then using a really thin Shyish purple as a glaze over that before doing the Daemonette Hide and Slaanesh Grey Highlights. Purely from a speed perspective.
Im getting my very first mini figure and its the emperors champion and i just got corvus black and a set of warhammers paint sets and thats it i dont have any paint beides the ones i just bought so i might not be using this technique but ill take some inspiration from this video
This is my absolute favorite black armor recipe. I've used it on my Custodes. I also plan on using it for my Stormcast since I'll be doing Anvils of Heldenhammer. Although it'll be over a white base since grey seer is basically nonexistent around here.
You're an absolute star, just started painting my templars and have absolutely ruined my champion trying to paint him, so off to GW to tomorrow to buy these paints 👍
Thank you very much and I'm glad you liked it! The Templar pad is from the Deathwatch Veterans set and the one with the scrolls on is from the Blood Angels Death Company.
Newbie here. I'm really struggling with the contrast paints on Space Marines. I have not found a good way to get the paint to not pool and produce coffee staining. Any suggestions or videos you could point me to? Thanks!
Hi elguntor! When it comes to using the paints it all comes to how much is on your brush and how you apply it. Ideally you want enough paint that your brush is visibly full, but not forming a drip. That can go a long way to avoiding the scratchiness and staining. I'd also recommend painting towards the recesses and edges of the model and going section by section so you can pull off any pooling without running the risk of it being partly dry.
This is great :) would the could you swap out the armour highlights for slightly different colours? Like thunderhawk blue and then fenrisian grey or would that be ineffective :) many thanks
Great video as usual, thanks for this. Quick question though, I would like to follow most of this guide as I like the use of the purple and and black templar contrast, however would you have any suggestions on making them look slightly more "grim dark" or battleworn. Nothing major but just a touch. Would drybrushing some grey after the black templar and then using something like nuln oil work, or would that work against the contrasts at all? Thanks again.
Thanks Mark! I think using Nuln Oil might end up dulling things down a bit, though a bit of a careful drybrush of grey, or perhaps lightly with some silver towards the edges of plates could help them look a bit more scuffed and damaged.
Thanks! The Black Templar pad is from the Deathwatch Veterans kit and pretty much everything else is from the Blood Angels Death Company. It’s real treasure trove of bits.
No worries! I reckon Talassar could work quite nicely too, I think it depends on how deep you want it. I’ve done Black Templar over Ultramarines Blue on some of the leather in the recent Qulathis video and that works really well.
@warhipster I’ve been using this video to base my army theme on. What paints do you suggest for the cloth on Sword Brethren and Crusader Squads? Thanks I’m advance for any help!
Hey Brett! For the cloaks and such that they sport I’d probably do something similar to what I did on Chaplain Grimaldus’ vestments: ruclips.net/video/-42XmaYyUBw/видео.html and for the linings of their cloaks and any tabards I’d probably use the tabard recipe from this Lazarus video: ruclips.net/video/NFM--65SZMU/видео.html I hope this helps!
I have never worked with contrast paints before and my edge highlight game isn't exactly flawless. My question is can I use the black templar contrast paint to fix any mistakes as I could with standard paint?
It's more difficult as the nature of the contrast paints make them slightly transparent! You'd have to go back to your undercoated colour and start again, wraithbone for e.g
It depends to be honest, if you make a mistake with something light then you likely can cover straight back over whereas if it's something darker or stronger then you may need to put a spot of Grey Seer or Wraithbone on first.
It's a track called Sama by Feras Charestan. I downloaded it from www.epidemicsound.com which is where I get all my music from as it's all rather lovely!
Hey Warhipster! Saw you on Winter's channel and had to follow... your painting vids have given my lots of ideas but I have a question... Is there a reason you start with Shyish Purple instead of Basilicanum Grey ? I'm completely aware looks are subjective and different people like different things... I just personally don't like the purple tone to the black. I was wondering if this is purely a choice because you like the purple look to the black or if the grey doesn't look good? Hope this question finds you well! Thanks and keep up the awesome work!
So I’ve used a number of combinations Grey Gives you a cold Black, Blue gives you a smooth Black, purple is like a sinister black Turquoise is a kind of evil malevolent black. Realistically the under tone sets the tone for what the overall finish is. It just entirely depends on what you’re painting I find. Like Deathwatch are inherently clean shiny boys so the blue preshade makes the most sense whereas something like the Templars a grey or a Purple is much closer in tone for them as they have that functional yet dangerous type aura if you know what I mean!
@@Warhipster Makes complete sense... have you done videos with blue and grey as the base tone before the black? I would love to check them out if you have. Doesn't have to be space marines. I'm just interested in what the finished product looks like.
Yeah man Sisters video uses the grey, deathwatch videos use the blue, Raven Guard used the blue as well I think but they’re two different blue and black methods, ermmmmm there’s a lot im struggling to remember that’s worrying!
Hey Brett! If I'm using a Contrast paint I'll use it as is, unless mentioned and I always try to give the ratios of paint to medium when I do thin it. With regular paints it depends - some of the thicker ones I use enough water on a palette to get it flowing, whereas with the thinner ones I tend not to bother. A bit of a nothingburger answer I'm afraid, as it all comes down to the paint I'm using at the time.
great painting, love the technique and colours you've used! just one question to ask please. if i was to use a blue rather than Shyish prurple before i then applied the BT contrast paint. would it give off a blueish tint under the black armour? many thanks
just tried this now - the contrast method is a really mat finish to it compared to abaddon black base paint. Yours doesn't look mat. Dont know what I did wrong
This is a certainly a good Question! Effectively you want to add scrapes using the same greys that you used for the highlights on the power armour. You can also add Chipping using silver and Brown in a stippling method.
Quite appropriately for a Chapter as headstrong as the Black Templars I don’t think there’s a set colour do you can do whatever you like. They’re not exactly codex compliant after all!
The Templar pad is from the Deathwatch Veterans box and the one with the cord across it is from the Blood Angels Death Company. I’ve a massive Blood Angels army so I’ve loads of bits from them.
I'm fairly certain it was my Dried Earth Bases recipe which you can find a video for here on RUclips. Was a long time ago now and I might have misremembered!
When I use contrast paint such as shyish purple and black templar, it's infinitely darker than the color you obtain and way less pretty, I think I'm going to have to strip my model it looks like shit :s . How do you obtain such a clear shyish purple? Thanks
This is my Bible . My Sacred Scroll. My Vow. You are amazing with ur technique and style and logical methodology. Why Grey Seer Primer and not Black Chaos ?????????? Is it a completely different result????? Please let me know. Thank you for sharing ur experience. Live Long And Prosper.
You certainly could use Chaos Black however you would have to layer up the other colours with Grey Seer from a pot to get the Contrast in there OR just use Base and layer paints to get them to the colour you want to be! I always Contrast paint so I wouldn't use Chaos Black as I don't like Layering up to White from a black base!
@@Warhipster thank you for the insight . As I mentioned….I’m a newbie and I am receiving my miniatures in the mail slowly as we talk. I believe I will not just jump and use the actual Black Templar Models first so I will get an UltraMarine group and use Black Templar paints to try and learn my technique as learning from ur tutorials. Quick question about gameplay and Heavy Support Armour. The Rhino/Predator Destructor/Land Raider Crusader /Land Speeder/Bike units are not available to purchase …..are these able to be modified from Ultramarines to Black Templar units for Fast attack and Heavy Support? The codex supplement shows them being used in armies but they are unable to be purchased as Black Templar specific. What can I do ? The 10th edition is out and I would love to have a Superior Army. What do you think?
Yeah they’re all available for the Black Templars I think the only thing you can’t have is Librarians but I might be wrong! Basically even though they’re blue on the website on the box you can just paint them as Black Templars and they are indeed Black Templars. I do Blood Angels myself and have to buy some blue boxes but you just paint them red and they’re blood Angels! I’d recommend heading over to Warhammer Community and taking a look in the 40K section under downloads for your Black Templars and Space Marines rules and what you can and cannot take. Your answers are there!
@@Warhipster thank you I am relieved that my newbie Army can have Heavy Armour Support. I will be watching for more of ur videos! What is ur take on Super Glues ? Do you use the type like Tamiya extra thin fast dry? You have heard from some peeps that some of these “melt” the plastic and can damage the model….I am guessing…. The only way to avoid that is to use it very carefully and very lightly. What do u think?
sorry i just joined the boat. I like your video, i just regret that you go Sooooo fast on the highlights. Where to put them, how to put them, that’s what is hard for most people. You spend like half the video on doing things that i do on 5 minutes with my airbrush, but the most interesting part... it’s totally skipped. the only thing i have is the moving image in the end. Could you make a video to detail and highlight the highlights? i’m sure you’ll get tons of love for that.
That's a cool idea, Alexandre and I'll have a think about how I can incorporate it into some videos. I like to spend time in the videos covering the basics though, as I don't use an airbrush and I'm making these tutorials for people using Contrast paints I want to make sure I'm showing how to get things Battle Ready, as much as anything else I do.

Shyish Purple
Black Templar
Apothecary White
Skeleton Horde
Wyldwood
Flesh Tearers Red
Volupus Pink
Cygor Brown
Corax White

Basilicanum Grey

Slaanesh Grey
Screaming Skull
Sycorax Bronze

many thanks
Hey, did you try this? I'm interested in the same thing!
@@TheWelshLlama no I’ve not got round to trying this but think I might give it a try soon when I get 5 mins
INstead of the purple contrast, could I use a blue (UM) under the Black Templar or would it not look as dark?
You sure could - I've used blue, turquoise and grey under black and they all work well and give slightly different results.
Can you share the name of the brush you use the highlight with? Thx
just tried this now - the contrast method is a really mat finish to it compared to abaddon black base paint. Yours doesn't look mat. Dont know what I did wrong
How do i add battle damage to black armor?
This is a certainly a good Question! Effectively you want to add scrapes using the same greys that you used for the highlights on the power armour. You can also add Chipping using silver and Brown in a stippling method.
@@Warhipster Could you do a vid on it?
I’ll add it to the list!
What head piece is that? I don't seem to find it anywhere
It’s from the Blood Angels Death Company kit - I’ve used a few bits in there that I felt fitted the theme of the Black Templars.
@@Warhipster Is there any website I could buy the bits from or something along those lines?
I know there’s a couple out there like BitzBox but I have these from having a big Blood Angels army.
Merci !
De Rien!
the Warhammer page looks like silver wings with a gold center for the chest Aquila
Quite appropriately for a Chapter as headstrong as the Black Templars I don’t think there’s a set colour do you can do whatever you like. They’re not exactly codex compliant after all!
but where did you get all those extra goodies attached to the templar from?
The Templar pad is from the Deathwatch Veterans box and the one with the cord across it is from the Blood Angels Death Company. I’ve a massive Blood Angels army so I’ve loads of bits from them.
What did you use for the base out of interest?
I'm fairly certain it was my Dried Earth Bases recipe which you can find a video for here on RUclips. Was a long time ago now and I might have misremembered!
Would this work with a dark blue instead of the purple?
Absolutely! I'd probably recommend using Leviadon Blue if you wanted to go that route.
When I use contrast paint such as shyish purple and black templar, it's infinitely darker than the color you obtain and way less pretty, I think I'm going to have to strip my model it looks like shit :s . How do you obtain such a clear shyish purple? Thanks
Nice
Thanks!
what is the helmet from?
The helmet is a Bladeguard helmet. There's tons of great knightly helmets in that box!
@@Warhipster thankyou !^^
Have you ever thought of putting your paint in droppers
"We do not wear his symbol. We are his symbol" -Grimaldus
Black Templars do not wear the Aquila.
No aquila here - merely a winged skull, just like on the new Primaris Crusaders.
thank
the correct answer is " Black Templars have NO aquila on their chest " maximum would be the Templar cross
@@Warhipster I will move forward and use ur setup with Grey Seer .
Thank you
Live Long and Prosper!
