Thank you Tim for your invaluable training for horses but, you are matchless in rider instruction. I am 81 yrs old and am blessed to still ride. I ride dressage into I realized the dreadful way it was going. Your advice on spurs and their proper use would be of great interest. For instance, I always thought western spurs were a cruel tool! Thanks again…..

I have found that riding bareback and when with a saddle with me weight in my healed gives me pretty good balance, I learned that when I rode hunt seat, just don't be a passenger. Love your videos and your riding instructions, lov u always!😊 lynn75 in Missouri

Tim! I used the tips you taught in this video and it was like riding a totally different horse who had been stopping out of nowhere a lot. The shoulders back too helped a lot - THANK YOU so much!!!!

There's a new gimmick i see advertised recently - neck strap for balance & security... folks that rely on it are definitely not developing a good, secure seat.

I like to slip my feet out of the stirrups first at the walk for about 10 mins then at a bit of a faster pace. It really helps me to feel my seat and my horse sure notices it too! I try to do this about every couple rides.

Hi Tim, watching your video's from Evergem, Belgium. I'm an English rider but will travel to Utah in September and this video was really helpfull for the differences between English and Western. Have been following you for a while now and really appriciated your tips and explinations. It's helping me a lot to become a better rider.

chair seat might be coming from you, but also from poor saddle fit and wrong center of gravitiy in the saddle (plus saddle girthed to much forward on the withers). Is your saddle the right size for you as well? Try to check out these points 👍

@@LenaPalmier thanks , i use a dressage saddle that does fit us both but i just slid it back a bit like its supposed to be,it was a smidge too high on the withers for a dressage saddle . i also put a wider gullet in it and it changed my seat immediately also i noticed my mare had impulsion so i think it was smushing her should movement, at any rate im still tweaking it and will need to learn to ride correctly from this point going forward. but ya thanks for the tips

watching Leicestershire, England. I am fascinated with western riding. It seems much more logical to me than English. I haven't ridden for many years now and I am itching to ride again but concerned due to being so much older and unfit.

Viewing in UK. I ride English , and I sit the trot when it is a slower trot, but post when she's going faster. I also practise standing up at the walk and trot to improve my seat and my balance.
I have a bad habit of looking down at the horse (too many young horses!) Ive put out many obstacles in my training area which helps with this.

1:10 "You're holding on nothing". I want to make an avertissment here: I've been riding (english) for 10+ years with an HORRIBLE seat (I never reached the intermediate level in riding), because I was trying to follow that tip too litterally...
Recently, I started to ride western, and my coach taught me how to fix the top part of my calves (and not my knees) against the horse (through the fenders, of course). This has been life changing! I'm not really holding on my calves but, by pressing them against the horse when I'm losing my balance, I managed to somehow "untie" my seat and need to press my calves less and less. In only a few hours, I finally managed to have a very good seat (but still not perfect), even on the horse I keep riding english, and who is absolutely NOT compliant (he's used to be ridden by beginner, and knows every trick, especially how to pick up a very uncomfortable trot that put the rider off balance and so interrupts the exercize. Now, I'm good on this horrible trot and can put the horse back into a good one).

While taking lessons aboard a reining horse, the insructor encouraged me to post not so much rising in the saddle, but as more forward, then settle back with the forward rythm of the outside fore, to encourage the horse to lengthen its forward stride.... does this sound like what you are doing with alternate hip moving forward with the trot?

It would be helpful if you repeated the question so we understand the answer.
I *HATE* split reins! But I didn't show much and the rules were different I think... or maybe my show bridle was split, I just don't remember. Most of my riding was either gymkhana, barrels or out on the trail. I did work cattle -- not in an arena, but out on the ranch when we had to castrate, remove horns and brand them. (Poor calves!)

This is a great video for me. I grew up in England, so grew up riding English, when I moved here to the US I stuck with Englisg, then distance rode for 30 years in an English type saddle. With the 2 horses I have now I was riding in a type of hybrid English/ western style and have recently switched to a more traditional western saddle with the older , more broke horse, I can tell he likes it much better, but I am feeling lke I am learning to ride all over again after 55 years! It puts me in a way more different position than I am used to!
