  • The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 (Russian: Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-21; NATO reporting name: Fishbed) is a supersonic jet fighter and interceptor aircraft, designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau in the Soviet Union. Its nicknames include: Balalaika, because its planform resembles the stringed musical instrument of the same name; Ołówek, Polish for "pencil", due to the shape of its fuselage, and; Én bạc, meaning "Silver Swallow", in Vietnamese.
    Approximately 60 countries over four continents have flown the MiG-21, and it still serves many nations six decades after its maiden flight. It made aviation records, became the most-produced supersonic jet aircraft in aviation history, the most-produced combat aircraft since the Korean War and previously the longest production run of a combat aircraft (now exceeded by both the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle and General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon).
    The most widely produced supersonic jet fighter of all time, the MiG-21 (Western reporting name Fishbed) is an incredibly prolific aircraft. Dated but nimble, it has allowed skilled pilots in past decades to defeat more advanced aircraft. However, its days are numbered as the majority of air forces switch to newer fighters.
    The Mikoyan design bureau began development of the MiG-21 in the 1950s, in order to replace the crash-prone MiG-19s. Its first flight was in 1956. Production began in 1959, and it entered service soon after. The MiG-21 holds the record for the most-produced jet aircraft. More than 10 000 units were produced (counting Chinese production). The MiG-21 fighter was in service with 50 countries. It continues to serve in around 20 countries to this very day, even though it is an out-dated aircraft.
    The MiG-21 was nothing radical - it was a continuation of the existing MiGs (the 17 and the 19). Compared to its predecessor, MiG-19, the MIG-21’s main design difference is its triangular delta wings (as opposed to the swept wings on the MiG-19). Its primary improvements of such improved design were its speed and greater capacity for armament. The MiG-21 was relatively simple in design and technology. This allowed to produce these aircraft in large numbers.

    I grew up in the path of Mig-21PFM variants (I recently learned that from Eduard's 1:48th scale model, before that I just knew they were Mig-21s) which flew out of the Krzesiny airbase in Poznan, Poland and buzzed my apartment building, sometimes daily. I lived on the 8th floor with a balcony pointing due east, so I had a magnificent view of the main radar at the airbase some 4km away, and could usually spot the Migs shortly after takeoff (through binoculars anyway). They always flew to the south of my building (which made sense at the neighborhood was on the south end of the city and a straight line from the landing strip sends aircraft going west in a line just south of there). At night they would be harder to spot, but the airbase would only turn on landing lights for a few seconds, so a sudden line would be seen as the shadow of the aircraft passed the lights, then everything would go dark. This repeated numerous times throughout the evening - a big fan of light on the horizon, the shadow like a clock hand moving counter clockwise, then dark again. These days Poland flies F-16s, which I can see any old day in the US where I currently live, but I always get excited when seeing a video about Migs since it reminds me of those days.

    A strong numerical force of Mig-21s can be a huge threat, just doing bombing runs is enough, they are also cheaper to build than it is to shoot them down with expensive missiles but they are too big a threat to leave be. It's like a glass shard, it's quite damaging, easy to break but trying to break it may result in you cutting your hand. In a war of attrition, Mig-21's might just be valuable enough to bring back to production or to refurbish decommissioned ones.

    its a flying tank, most badass fighter jet, Indian air force uses the upgraded Bison variant that shot down F16 recently, it's strong, simple, fast and very very accurate. my dad use to work in a service department in Indian air force, he use to say that mig 21 is like a modern lego, you can assemble and dis-assmble easily any components, and it's a great platform for all types of weapons. it can even be equiped with heavy canons to shoot tanks, that IAF pilots have already done during Bangladesh War, my dad says Mig chnged the game in Bangladesh liberation war.

  • @igorkratka
    @igorkratka 4 года назад

    Just correcting a few mistakes in the video: Mig 21 was not super maneuverable, the internal cannon was dual 23 mm- never carried 30 mm, was designed as interceptor, and adopted fighter role later only because advances in nuclear ballistic missiles rendered nuclear bombers obsolete. It was not designed for dogfight, but for Mach 2+ speed- that`s why it has delta wings. The plane was not of air superiority concept. No offence, just I know about Mig 21 a lot so why not to share the knowledge.

      The F 104 was too much of the short range manned interceptor thing. The Mig 21 and the Mirage III were both short range interceptors but at least they could dogfight and had reasonable flying charactaristics for their time. The F 104 was literaly a manned misile. When they bought it, the US export clients wanted it to be a multirrole with ground attack and dogfighting in the menu. It was not to be.

    In 1967, a primary reason why the Israelis were so successful against the MiG-21 was because the Mossad encouraged an Iraqi Assyrian/Christian pilot (Captain Munir Redfa) to defect along with a brand new, state of the art MiG-21F in 1965/66. The Israelis practised against that MiG-21 and a year later in 1967, they were very prepared.
    In 1973, it was a different story. The Israelis had advanced avionics and better radar with AWACS which boosted the electronic signature of the Syrians MiG-21 which weren't equipped with radar warning systems so we shot out of the sky. That said, it's also about skill. The Arabs aren't good pilots. It was actually the Pakistani and Bengali pilots that were seconded to the Syrians and Jordanians who were successful in shooting down the majority of Israelis.

    Vietnamese here. The first version of MiG-21 provided to VPAF is of PF variant, which do not include a gun. This and the fact that MiG-21 have worst turn rate than MiG-17 make it unpopular among the pilot of the 921FR which first deploy the type. For the first years the MiG-21 suffer many losses and was ground for upgrade to PFM standard which have better radar for night engagement, include of GSh-23; also better tactic was developed, as at first more experienced pilot was used to turn based engagement in MiG-17. The boom and zoom energy based tactic was more suitable to the MiG-21 speed. Finally another innovation was engagement from 2nd wingman (idk how to translate the term from vietnamese): The lead turn in to engage the enemy while the wingman maintain higher state of energy; as the enemy commit the lead disengage (he's actually a bait) and the wingman swoop in to take down. Ace pilot Nguyen Van Coc was credited with developing this tactic and score 7 of his 9 kills in this manner.
    Edit: i got to go back and clarify one thing: the first ones that VPAF have are indeed PF variant, which do not have a gun. Later on they have to downgrade to F13 standard which include a 23mm cannon, not by upgrading to PFM. That come much later

Because it was not a air superiority fighter, and the F 35 was a Air Force proyect who was forced into the Us Navy who wanted more range and less stealth, and Marines who wanted a superharrier, in one of those moments of "jointness" that afect the US defense procurement. The results of those one size fits all solution is often very costly. McNamara was one of those believers on jointness. And the results were very expensive jack of all trades, masters of nothing. Most of the problems with the F 35 have been in the Marines and Navy versions.

      Yeah, I've always said it's the man in the cockpit that is the key. Put an experienced knowledgeable pilot in there and you got a formidable fighting machine. A know nothing rookie, and all you got is something for target practice. Like a guy with a knife. I could have the biggest baddest knife on the planet. My opponent, nothing more than a flick knife. But if my opponent knows how to fight with a knife with every trick in the book and all I know is what I've seen on the telly, somehow, I don't think I'm going to walk away in one piece. And he probably will.

      Sheffield also said, all thing being equal, the "F-5E Tigershark" would beat the MiG-21. _"The MiG-21 had better low-speed nose authority, but the F-5E sustained energy just a little bit better. If you had put a clone of me in the F-5E, and another in the Fishbed Cs [and] Es that we flew, the F-5E would probably win most of the time, but only by a very slight margin."_
      In all of the Vietnam war... *less than 80 U.S. planes were brought down by strictly air-to-air combat,* the vast, VAST majority were shot down using surface-to-air missiles. And, when I say "shot down by air-to-air", that's of EVERY TYPE of plane, not just the F-4. The plane the MiG-21 was sent to shoot down most was the F-104 Thunderchief (the plane doing the most damage to Vietnamese infrastructure and war-fighting facilities). *In air-to-air combat with the F-4 Phantom exclusively... the MiG-21 scored LESS than 5 kills* and, as previously mentioned, the winning tactic was to entice a single F-4 into chasing what appeared to be a slow moving MiG-21, only to discover that it was actually three MiG-21's, two of which were high above with maximized energy (something F-4 fighter pilots learned to NOT DO very, very quickly).
      In fact, the VERY FIRST air-to-air use of the F-4, was to mimic a squadron of F-104's in order to ambush a squadron of MiG-21's (or any MiGs sent up for that matter, but it turned out to be the MiG-21s that were sent). The F-4s ambushed 7 *(SEVEN)* MiG-21s and shot every... single... one of them down, without suffering a single loss to any of the U.S. F-4s. Contrary to the deluded fantasy of MiG-21 fanboys around the world, *the Mig-21 was NOT the "Phantom Killer" they believe it to be,* and the F-4 was a very formidable fighter against the MiG-21, with virtually every advantage (especially after such fixes as adding a gun-pod, improved tactics by way of training such as Top-Gun, and improved missile assembly and maintenance). The Vietnamese learned very quickly not to take on an F-4 in a one-on-on situation, and eventually, they tried to save their MiGs from engaging fighter escorted bombers entirely, preferring the use of surface-to-air missile batteries, which were much more effective, both in kill ratios and in cost savings.

    • @mecenario7
      @mecenario7 4 года назад +2

      @@thebonesaw..4634 In war there are a myriad of factors that would affect performance of an aircraft type but you can't evaluate the abilities of a certain aircraft until you isolate all of these factors that you ignored like numerical superiority, technological superiority of supporting elements and last but not least pilot training.Many VPAF pilots flew MiGs straight out of basic training and went to fight with minimal experience.That's the very reason that the Red Eagles squadron was formed. To get a firsthand experience with enemy aircraft without the influence of the "fog of war".
      Whereas the F-4 could perform many mission types that the Fishbed couldn't, in a close distance 1vs1 scenario between equally skilled pilots the MiG-21 had the advantage with its superior turrning ability and that is something that people responsible for the lives of US pilots like Sheffield knew and made their best to transmit this knowledge to their colleagues.

      @@mecenario7 -- I think I've given you the wrong impression about me, but if you want to play that game... fine.
      You can in fact; ascertain certain abilities of certain aircraft (especially shortcomings) and apply that which is necessary to get the absolute most out of the platform. If their plane is - say - better below 20,000 feet, climbs or dives faster and has a better turning radius, you counter that in order to deprive your adversary of those advantages. Almost every dogfight comes down to how well trained the pilots are in each plane, not just in tactics, but in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of their own craft and their enemy's. All this dickwaving about - _"Well, if you put this [name of super-duper pilot] into this [name of plane] and had them go into an engagement where they have all the advantages, and then you got the other [equally trained, super-duper pilot] and put him in [name of different plane] and then forced him to engage in a scenario he probably would have been smart enough to avoid... Well... then you'd see!"_ - is an exercise in futility. It's pointless. I simply do not get all the fanboy bullshit about this plane. *The MiG-21 is the Boba Fett of fighter jets... it looks cool, but it hasn't done all that much and, as time has gone by is really more of a danger to itself...* and the pilots who fly it... and innocent civilians on the ground. Why air forces around the world insist on keeping this piece of shit in their inventory is beyond me. As an example of what I'm talking about, let's just stick with India... Do you want to take a guess as to which plane India's MiG-21s have scored the most kills?
      It's the MiG-21... but it's not another nation's MiG-21s the IAF is bringing down... *...it's their own MiG-21s.*
      India has more experience with the MiG-21 than any other nation (more than even the Russians). India also has had the largest inventory of these MiGs, over 1,200 of them since 1963. And in all that time the biggest thing they've learned about them is... the MiG-21 simply cannot wait to jump into the Sarlacc pit. The MiG-21 is the most accident prone jet in India's inventory and are referred to as the "flying coffin" and/or the "widow maker". Between 1966 and 2012, India suffered 482 MiG-21 losses, which is more than half of its operational fleet of 840 during the same time period. Between 1971s and 2012 the IAF lost an average of 12 per year, so these losses haven't only recently started to become a problem, the issue has surrounded the plane since the very beginning. And it's not just an issue that India is having with their air force as a whole because, compared to other aircraft in India's inventory, the MiG-21 losses are off the charts. Nor have these losses solely come down to human error, several of them have included, as the Indians say.. _"technical deficits"._ Worse still, is the huge loss of life surrounding these accidents... 171 pilots and 40 civilians have lost their lives due to these accidents.
      So, if you ever find yourself engaged in a war with India, the best way to take on the IAF's MiG-21s is to simply leave it alone for awhile and let it kill itself.

    I love the Mig-21. It kinda looks like a lawn dart, but I love it. It was the first aircraft module I picked up for DCS, despite the fact it's a bit of a pain to fly. The gear is easily damaged on take-off. Can't fly inverted for more than a few seconds or you'll fuel-starve the engine. It's pretty easy to get a compressor stall if you're not careful. The line between too fast and falling out of the sky during landings is pretty thing. But it is just a fantastic plane to fly once you get everything down. And I did like the multiplayer bug where your wingman would be flying next to you with chocks, a ladder, and a fire extinguisher floating neatly arranged around him, lol.

I knew a gent from Czechoslovakia who flew MiG-21's many years ago, and his eyes always lit up when he talked about this aircraft. This is one seriously bad-ass aircraft. IMO this is still a viable platform in a scenario where the users of the MiG-21 are acting as interceptors against an enemy seeking to establish air control. A long as any exist in hardened shelters, the opposition will be shy about sending in anything that is "soft". Sometimes a successful military action is not measured by how many you kill, but if you denied the enemy the ability to operate effectively or to a schedule. Pity the F-35 that falls victim to a visual contact by any MiG-21 pilot.

Several bidders if the demand was pressing enough. And the corruption...

This’ll mean that inevitably some fighters will make it through and will dogfight the more expensive fighters that would’ve spent their long rage missiles

    Real nice vid Mat, but I dont think a MiG 21 should be called a "strategic bomber" per say. Yes it was used and is still used in a secondary ground attack role but it doesnt have the payload capacity nor the loiter times and the range to classify it as a strategic bomber. I think the word you are looking for is a tactical ground attack aircraft, although it is poorly suited to that role as well due to its poor handling at low speeds and comparitively high stall speed. Anyways, still a good video

    The F-4 was never designed for low-to-medium speed turnfights with other fighters. It was designed for one simple task: take off from a carrier carrying four AIM 7s and that heavy radar in the nose, climb up to altitude really quickly, and shoot those Sparrows at approaching Soviet bombers. It was a fleet defense interceptor. Not a dogfighter. The role it was pressed to in Vietnam (air superiority) was not its intended role. So of course the Mig 21 ran circles around it in a turning fight. The F-8 Crusader was the Navy's dogfighter, not the F-4.

If you are talking about GSh-23 on MiG-21 then it is GP-9 gunpod under fuselage in the place of drop tank for PF, PFL, PFM, FL, S vesions with 200 rounds. Than on M, SM versions and onvard it was hard mounted GS-23 under fuselage with 200 rounds. It wasnt upgraded to 30mm cannon, The 30 mm on side you are talking was on F-13 version on the right side, with 60 rounds, or on F version on both sides, 60 rounds each. J-7 have it somewhat different being developed from F-13 version. Oh, and there is also UPK-23-250 gunpod with GSh-23 (250 rounds).
