  • In this wide-ranging interview with actor and critic Narendra Prasad, Malayalam literary genius O.V. Vijayan gives a rare peek into his creative process. He discusses the evolution of this thinking and style beginning with Khasakinte Ithihasam through Dharmapuranam, and finally Gurusagaram. He laments how Indian literature around radicalism and social protest is permeated with heroes and heroines based on western constructs of logical reasoning, instead of the more spiritual and experiential constructs found in Indian traditions. Finally, he reads a passage from Dharmapuranam, which in OV's own opinion is his most poignant prose.
Originally aired in June 1985 interview, video is from Doordarshan Malayalam. English translation by Ashif Panakkat and friends (apanakkat@gmail.com).

The so-called Malayali intellect has no relevance to his less-than-average lifestyle. He has to immigrate to a foreign country to make a living and may be live the life of a poor malayali. And you talk about Kamu and Sartre.?Shame on you.

I tried 4 times to read the so-called "Khasakkinte ethihasam" Finally I gave up. Of course, readers of "Mathrubhoomi" may enjoy OV Vijayan. But the majority of Malayalies are outside this sphere. I enjoy books but am not willing to struggle so much for entertainment. I finally said to myself: to hell with it. I am a poor Malayaly with average intellect and lifestyle.

It is not about intellectual or anything else.Of course, it is not an easy-read if you are new to reading.Read 'One hundred years of solitude' by Marquez and books of Albert Camus(like plague and stranger), then try to read it.
