I replaced the blower motor resistor pack on my jeep years ago, but forgot the particulars. This video was a great refresher to remind me of the details and made for a super smooth install. Thanks for publishing this extremely useful content!
Thank you very much for creating this concise, to-the-point how to video! I particularly appreciated the tips on the connector safety tabs. Fan position #2 (low) didn't work on my 2005 TJ. Positions 3 (medium) and 4 (high) worked fine. Replacing the resistor solved the problem. The repair took about 20 minutes and cost me $13.50 (Mopar part # 5139719AA). Note: I was unable to get the green connector at 0:30 apart, even with the red tab opened, and it was screwed or tie-wrapped in the back so I just worked around it. It wasn't in the way too much. One does really have to contort quite a bit to get one's head under the dash. It is a tight, awkward space. But, apart from that, the job's as straight-forward as you show. Thanks again. The time you spent doing this helps a lot of people.
Exact problem I was having, and about $18.50 later, the Jeep is running with all 4 fan speeds again. Thanks! Your video saved me a whole bunch of hunting and guessing to solve this problem. The Jeep world is better because of the efforts of folks like you. Keep it up!
Worked like a charm! Wonderful at the drive-thru or when trying to hear the weather forecast on the radio to have my quieter low fan speeds back without instead having no air moving at all. Also, I agree that that is a nice 1911. Thanks for not being afraid to show it! Many thanks for the video. I fixed it for 14 bucks instead of 100!
Great video, took me 20 minutes, hardest part was getting the connector off. You can wait and remove it after you pull the resistor. I ended up doing it that way. Thanks!
It’s pretty common amongst most older vehicles. What I was getting at is, you showed it working after the repairs were complete. The other peoples videos just show the work and not show the results of the repairs.
Great job! Thanks for the help! Mentioned it to a guy at the parts store and looked this up...low and behold the resistor was fried and the symptoms you described were the exact same!
now that, people, is how you make a DIY how-to video. perfect, exact, clear instructions. did not deviate away whatsoever like most other videos. I don't care about your cat, or the if that's cousin Eddy helpin. just tell me what I need to know. nailed it. thanks
Have an '02 Wrangler X and I think I have slowly ran into the same issues you have had! Great Vids! Keep them coming, I know I will run into the same issues eventually!
Thanks for the help. One thing I noticed was your video skipped a bit while you pulled the green plug apart.. I found out why. Wow that was a pain to get apart.. But this is a great help.. Thanks again
Happy to report that your instructions were spot on, however the replacement of the resistor did not restore the low and medium blower settings. Going to replace the off/low/med/high switch next unless you have a better idea. Thanks.
Thanks for this. At first I replaced the switch and it didn't fix it. A friend mentioned a resistor and I came upon your video. Can't wait to get this fixed.
Scott Klein This is a very common problem on all vehicles. I'm an old guy who's knowledge stopped increasing in the 90s so all I drive is old junk and most need a blower motor resistor.
Got the part thru Amazon and watched your video before the install. went very well, took about 40 minutes. Thanks for the video help, got all speeds back for the Winter.
Thanks for the video, a great help. I bought the part (JA1476) at AutoZone in 40220 for $18.01. It took me longer than your video but it fixed the problem and now I have all four fan speeds. Good stuff.
Nice video. 2005 Wrangler here and no A/C on 1 or 2. This fixed the problem. I'm not very mechanical and I was able to complete the repair within 30 minutes. I'm not counting the time going to the store to buy a smaller ratchet set but honestly getting another tool isn't all that bad. Like others I needed to unbolt the resistor before separating it. Thanks!
Very Helpful and great documentary! Saved me a lot of time and money! I was going to ofrder the heater/ac control panel for nearly $150 but this part onlt cost me $22. Thank you!!
Thank you, sir. ***EXACT*** process for a 2003 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4.0L. Watched 4 other videos; this one was the most-instructive. The schematic overview was also a plus. Cross reference part numbers are: 5066552AA, 5139719AA, JA1476, 5139719AA.
@@user-nq5rd4ck5z just curious to ask you wouldn't happen to know the pitch of the screw threads for the two bolts, I just did this on my new to me 03 TJ and found that the upper screw was completely missing
hi. thank you! i did it! mine is a different model, resistor is different (short - not credit card type). whatever, i'm just happy i was able to fix it. i don't consider myself mechanically inclined, so i'm super surprised at how easy it was ~ bout 30 mins. again, thank you, sir.
If like mine your jeep is a 1997 Sahara 4.0 there's none of the struggling to detach connectors or anything else for that matter, apart from the 5 second glove box removal all that needs removing is a plastic cowel that covers the fan housing, as soon as you remove the 3 screws (I used an 8mm socket) it pulls out of the way and the heater blower resistor is staring you in the face with no obstructions whatsoever2 minutes and it was out. NO STRUGGLING WHATSOEVER, EASY AS PIE. Best wishes from a UK Jeep owner
Nice video Sir! I have done this repair a couple of times, video taped it, and found it very difficult to capture the details as well as you did (cramped space with bad lighting). From a technical point, I can say that I was able to just slide the green connector to toward the driver's side without disconnecting it. And I did leave the courtesy wire attached after removing the mounting screw and just pulled it aside.
My two cents. I stalled for quite a while on the green connector. It is in a channel and the only way I could get it out is to push down (towards the pavement) because there is a little tab on the top. Then when you put it back you have to slide it from the top down. Other than that - success! Thank you for posting!
Wow! I lost the first two speeds a couple of years ago. I always assumed it was the switch, and figuring it would be a PITA to replace, just lived with it using speed three all the time. It was sort of a nuisance since I often wanted it lower, but oh well... Then yesterday, position 3 went out so I decided it was time to research the problem. A few minutes later I decided to try the resistor pack before the switch. Stopped at Advanced Auto-parts on the way home and picked one up for $20.99. Decided to tackle it today before it got too hot. Sort of aggravating to get to and see what you're doing but, probably 30 minutes later I have all four blower speeds back again!
Just completed this replacement also and I recommend disconnecting the harness after removing the resistor. Mine was on fairly tightly also and even though I attempted to disconnect while still bolted, it was easy a pie once it was hanging loosely.
Great video! Fixed my blower settings (I had 1,1,1,4 now I have 1,2,3,4). The only problem I had was being unable to get the red locking tab back into the resister plug assembly. Any insights? Is it absolutely necessary to replace?
Excellent video. I found it easier to remove the resistor pack with the connector attached and then wrestle with the connector having a little more access and view. I hope I never have to do it again although it will be easier the second time.
I just replaced this part the other day. They sure as hell didn't give much room to get to it. It's nice having four fan speeds again. That light gets hot, burnt my hand a few times.
or, after 17 years - the connection came loose, but thanks for the video - finding the problem was the same process as swapping out the resistor ( now I've got one on hand if it does fail )
This is the same for 2002 Wrangler. I had parts store ask me 4 or 5 prong. This is the 4 prong. The 5 prong is dramatically different and I saw it used for a 2001. Just FYI.
Hi thank you for the video. I went ahead and changed the resistor as well as the entire control panel but the blower still only works on position 4.(highest). Any other suggestions??? Thank you.
I LOVE your videos!!! Could it be the resistor if Im having the opposite problem? It works on the lowest TWO settings and not at all on the 2 highest. Thanks for all your help!
Tracy Simmons That is weird. I have never seen that. I suppose it could be a bad connection or a break in the lines on the circuit board. I think you are going to have to get the ohm meter out for this one.
Tracy Simmons I have the same issue with mine. Works on lowest two but not the two highest settings. It did up until a week ago. It would work for a minute but cut out shortly after. Might be the heat switch itself I’m thinking. I’ll replace that and see if it fixes the issue.
Hi, thanks for the video. Did you have to disconnect the battery because you are disconnecting a few connectors? Or is ok to leave the battery connected while you change the resistor? Thanks.
+wwwCARSSUCKcom Thanks again, was a quick fix as you say. Now if I can only get that annoying squeak to stop on the serpentine belt. Needed a new belt and tensioner anyway, but still starts back up. Must be an adjustment. Anyway, thanks for the videos for the help.
Once I have the resistor out, how can I tell if it's bad? I know it's a cheap part but don't want to replace if that isn't the issue. (It's possible that it's this OR my blower motor going out...is what I was told by shop)
Logan Hallett Test it with an ohm meter. there should be some resistance between each pin, but not infinite resistance. The blower is not hard to remove. It could be full of leaves and stuff. This can cause it to draw more amps which can burn up the resister pack too.
I don’t know if your still reading these comments but on my Jeep since I have had it about 6 months all settings where off except high power but then I went on a 4 hour interstate drive and it worked on 4 the whole way but the next day the blower won’t work at all would this be the blower and resistor or just the resistor
Did everything but one. Always on a freezing day, I was unable the click the green plug back onto the track. Finally tie wrapped it to other lines to keep it secure. If this is not recommended, let me know. Would not have been able to do this without your help
cbzombiequeen58 It sounds like both. You can check the resister pack with an ohm meter but I am 99% on it being bad. I would also pull the motor out. It is real common for them to plug with leaves if you park it outside under a tree. Once out, you can check it with a couple test leads to your battery. Let us know.
I have the same problem with y jeep tj. But it only works on 1 and between 2 and 3 it won't work if it's on 2 or 3 it has to be between. But I don't know if it's the blower resister or the actual blower switch
Great Video have the same problem 05 TJ I changed the buttons it did not fix the problem 129.00 wasted if I had just checked here first thanks for the video.
Brian Hickman Hmmmm. I'd pull them back out and check each with an ohm meter. If they check out, you will have to chase the wiring with an ohm or volt meter. Keep us posted.
Eydie Fraenckel I assume you slid back the red lock on the connector. Try to take the screws out, pull the resister pack out with the harness attached. Then with it all out and hanging below where you can get your hands on it, you should be able to pull them apart. Sometimes they get so hot that the plastic melts a little and they get tight.
Derek Pike Hmmn. If it is still working on all settings, then I don't think so. Maybe pull the blower and make sure it is not clogged with leaves and stuff. That is pretty common. But is usually blows the resistor, not the switch.
I replaced the blower motor resistor pack on my jeep years ago, but forgot the particulars. This video was a great refresher to remind me of the details and made for a super smooth install.

Great video. I have the same problem with my TJ, but how do you tell if it the blower motor resister or the actual speed selector switch?
You can pull the resister pack out and test it with an ohm meter. there should be some resistance between each pin, but not infinite resistance.
Does it matter which way the resistor goes back into the hole where you mount it back in? Is there a top and bottom? One side has 2 words
I don't remember. I imagine the connector will only plug in one way and the harness should force it to go the correct way.
What a 9 in the box

Did everything but one. Always on a freezing day, I was unable the click the green plug back onto the track. Finally tie wrapped it to other lines to keep it secure. If this is not recommended, let me know. Would not have been able to do this without your help
Zip tie sounds good to me. Now amaze your friends with your knowledge. All the TJs my friends have bought have needed blower resistors.
You just made me a hero. Again, thanks 😊
i have a 1999, the blower worked only on high then went total out.we thought it was the blower motor, what do you think
cbzombiequeen58 It sounds like both.
Justin Devine That does sound more like the switch. Keep us posted.
Great Video have the same problem 05 TJ I changed the buttons it did not fix the problem 129.00 wasted if I had just checked here first thanks for the video.
Glad to help. I used to always say question everything. Now I say Google everything. Jeep On!
Need to put which yr it is as the part is different for yr models..
This Jeep is an '02, but it works on multiple years. Jeep On!
Mine stopped working on all speeds. Could this still be the resistor or is it the blower motor?
It's probably the motor. High speed is straight through with no resister. Jeep On!
my blower only works on 1 2 4 position not on 3 i changed the switch @ resister any idea?
Brian Hickman Hmmmm. I'd pull them back out and check each with an ohm meter. If they check out, you will have to chase the wiring with an ohm or volt meter. Keep us posted.
Great video! Unfortunately for me my connector at 2:09 won't budge and might have to take it in :(
Scott Mitchell Try taking the resister pack out with the harness connected then pull it apart.
got it out and my ac works! thanks dude
Scott Mitchell Awesome! Jeep On!
i cant seem to separate the wire pack from the resistor. Any tips on how to do that?
Eydie Fraenckel I assume you slid back the red lock on the connector. Try to take the screws out, pull the resister pack out with the harness attached. Then with it all out and hanging below where you can get your hands on it, you should be able to pull them apart. Sometimes they get so hot that the plastic melts a little and they get tight.
is there a way to tell if its the resister or the selector switch?
It is almost always the resister. You could test the resister pack with an ohm meter. Jeep On!
My wireing to my switch is getting hot and burning out my switches could this be my prob
Derek Pike Hmmn. If it is still working on all settings, then I don't think so. Maybe pull the blower and make sure it is not clogged with leaves and stuff. That is pretty common. But is usually blows the resistor, not the switch.
