      @@runelt99 Your dentist would not be pleased; grass contains a lot of silica, an abrasive which quickly wears down teeth. Grazing animals have teeth that are adapted to continually grow, replacing the worn tooth surfaces quickly.

      Its also his speed, great thumbnails, and he usually manages to take the best events of Destiny's 12 hour streams even outside of big events like Richard Wolff.

      I’ve been a consistent viewer since about 2017 and the videos now are wayyy better than before with all the edits, time stamps, thumbnails and meme edits added in. Only thing that’s missing is weekly meme videos and bestiny of destiny

      @@asimplewizard yeah I wonder how much time he actually puts in because it’s frankly ridiculous how much he adds to these videos. That, along with researching tweets, clipping other streams to add a face to the opposing debater/other conversationalist, checking in with the community on Reddit about video choices, etc.
      He’s a fricken workhorse, but ig if I was the best paid editor on twitch, I’d put in the hours, too.

    I want to weigh in with everyone else and compliment the fantastic editor. Hope they're getting paid well. The editing for context and backing up past things Destiny has said put this channel above others.

      Destiny has specified a few times that he pays his employees very well. He assumes that he pays better than most everyone else. I wouldn't doubt it he seems like a good guy especially if you are helping him. In my opinion when you're in business together or work together the key is that everyone should be happy. Along with obviously profiting that's the way to be very successful and keep everything running smooth.

    It's not so simple as people just say stuff to signify what side they're on, it's more that they're so entrenched that they are already convinced their side is right and that the other is so bad it can't possibly be right about anything, so there's no need to do extensive research because someone on your side already did it for you and they're on the same side as you, which as we all know is always the true and good side.

      a lot of these have roots in "signaling", because humans, as social creatures, like to signal about anything they do. hell, there is even that hypothesis popularized by michael from vsauce which is that what we call intelligence emerged as a means to argue with our social groups and it is so fallible because it primarily serves social function.

      Well that begs the question: who are your words for? If you’re convinced someone’s wrong simply because they are on the wrong side, who are you trying to convince with your words when you come at them? Is it to change their mind? Maybe at times, but definitely not always. Is it to persuade third parties of something? Is it useless and really just for your own ego? Obviously it varies some degree instance to instance, but it’s interesting to reflect on what our actual purpose is when we engage with politics.
      But beyond that the, the concept of side isn’t always clear cut. You might generally associate with the left, but which side you fall on issue to issue is much more complicated.
      So when you say people don’t feel they need to do the research because someone on their side did it already, what does that mean?

      @@seanmatthewking True, all depends who you are really. I know my statement describes who I used to be and the way I used to act online very accurately though, and I still catch myself falling into these bad behaviour patterns sometimes. There are probably a lot of reasons this is such an issue at the moment and this is just a cintributing factor, but maybe a defining factor in a lot of people (as mentioned, me for example).
      I don't think it really matters how clear cut the sides are, as long as the individuals arguing over the issue percieve there to be sides, that is all there needs to be for people to take sides and get entrenched. Even if only one 'side' even percieves there to be sides, it'll happen in that group of people. There are a few mechanisms I imagine by which this can happen, but it'll be a really long and rambling explanation and I'm not a sociologist so you probably don't want to hear my guesses.
      I thought a bit more about what I was saying, I've realised I'm basically describing the problems caused by misinformation again. Millions of sources for the news allows people to choose which suits them best, a lot of people just don't have time to do the research themselves so they just listen to the people they like online say whatever they say about current events and regurgitate it. But with so many people believing different versions of reality societal cohesion breaks down.

      @@bobpope3656 Lmao clearly you haven’t seen him talk about neoliberalism. He has opposed open borders and free trade in circumstances. He debated neoliberals about sweatshops before.
      The biggest difference is that he supports suburbs and rural areas hugely. Most extreme neoliberals want to abolish the suburbs and move everyone into cities because of more economic activity, lower carbon footprints, and collaboration. Destiny, on the other hand, wants people to leave overly populated cities because he believes having more people in rural areas would stabilize the housing market.

    Went to school for Comp Sci, I personally know how to build a computer because I learned in high school before I knew anything about software development, but I met a lot of comp sci majors that went into that major purely because of the possible money that you could gain from becoming a software dev, and these people knew NOTHING about actual computer hardware. I had to help a couple classmates build their new PC and I found it extremely disturbing that they didn't know what a CPU looked like until purchasing one on amazon.

    That was a great response Destiny had for that welfare question and the claim that child poverty has only reduced 1% since 1960. For one thing, child poverty rate includes families that live below the poverty line but do not receive welfare. If a parent has a felony conviction, it disqualifies them from receiving certain welfare or subsidies, depending on which state you live in. A variable like that can cause statistics to be misleading. If someone can't receive section 8 housing because of their criminal record then they can still qualify as an impoverished household. In these cases, welfare is irrelevant to the outcome of poverty.
    Cause and effect are not always crystal clear. IMO, welfare can have some unseen benefits. For instance, I live in a nice suburb but there are a couple of surrounding cities that are kind of shitty. Those cities have a higher rate of welfare recipients. If we completely eliminated all forms of welfare, you are now opening the door to all kinds of negative side effects. I think it would be fair to conclude that this type of situation would now create a situation where people are put in desperate situations in order to survive. This would logically lead to an increase in crime and poorer people are generally going to commit crimes against richer people. Which leads the anti-welfare crowd to suggest increased policing while disregarding the costs of increased policing and imprisonment. I think for those people, they think it's a matter of principle. They don't want their tax money spent on "free-loaders" but they are okay with that money being redirected toward punishing poor people.
    These issues are never simple. If welfare were eliminated you would probably see crime start spilling over into cities and neighborhoods that didn't experience much crime. And if the antidote is increased policing then you are agreeing to turn your own city into a heavily policed area.

    I think you're overly charitable to CRT & it's huge a blind spot for you. There are plenty of red flags in CRT that mimic alt-right ideology. Some of which are on a direct one-to-one comparison like race-realism & antisemitism.
    To address the kneejerk pivot from bailey to motte - we are far less concerned with teaching nazism in the descriptive context than the prescriptive. Once again, to be absolutely clear: there's a remarkable difference between teaching someone about neo-nazis & teaching someone how to be a neo-nazi. Thus, there's also a remarkable difference between teaching someone about Yakubian myth conspiracy theories & teaching someone to become a Yakubian myth conspiracy theorist.
    Terms like "blackness" & "whiteness" need to be validated or invalidated, rigorously, via quantitative or qualitative analysis before we can draw a conclusion from using this lens. Let alone teach or train trusted professionals like school teachers on how they should treat children and their parents based on "whiteness" and "blackness".
    I can think of plenty of criticisms liberals, omni or otherwise, would have with CRT. So it comes off really gaslighty to see the same arguments that were used to deflect criticism away from alt-right recruitment by the rightwingers earlier, now being employed by leftwingers to explain away CRT as a nothingburger.
    There's some alt-lefty recruitment bullshit going on in CRT & we need to address it just as seriously as we did with alt-right recruitment. They both operate off of a racially-authoritarian dogma + mythology. Both need to be monitored, tested, & regulated so that people don't get hurt.

      I’m definitely not on board with all the racial theory crap. Some of it makes sense, some doesn’t. It still not entirely clear to me what anyone means by CRT, so personally I’m just going to evaluate it on a case by case basis. Unless you can show that there something fundamentally wrong with CRT as it’s defined, the. I can only look at individual examples to judge it until I have a clear picture of how it manifests.

      Seriously! I used to be vegan but haven’t been for years, so I’m definitely not here to hate on anyone for their choices. But it seems pretty obvious that most animals experience some level of consciousness/sentience.
      More likely than not anyway. Seems like we should be flippant about their potential for suffering because we can’t verify it directly or their brains aren’t exactly like human brains, so it’s okay to presume they experience nothing.
      I think most people are rightly uncomfortable with things like factory farming, but it’s easy to ignore most of the time. How we choose to resolve the issue is up for debate, but anyone who begins with the assumption that animals aren’t sentient should be ignored.
      Explore that all you want in philosophy class, but there is too much on the line to play that game when talking about the practical aspects of raising and eating animals.

    Taxation is a transaction fee set by the issuer. In other words the issuer has a right to tax what is issued. In this case of the dollar, it is the US government that is the issuer of US Dollars. Therefor the US government has a right to tax US dollars. Money is not personal property. Money is a government service.

      @Desmond Grant There are thousands of different currencies to choose from. It is not the right of the issuer of one currency to tax the issuance of a different issuer, who issues a different currency. For instance the US government does not have the right to tax bitcoin. It may do so anyway, but it has no right to do so.

      @@NumeroSystem FYI, Taxation has nothing to do with the currency itself. People used to be taxed in vegetables.
      It is payment for services. If people don't pay taxes, they don't get services. Generally people support things like public education and emergency services. I have to pay more in taxes since the last election, because voters like myself approved a new $20 million fire department in my local district, as the previous one is 50 years old and the city has grown dramatically in that time.
      The US has the right to tax Bitcoin because the government has a right to fund these services however they want. If people don't like the ways in which the government is funding services (or don't agree the services should be funded), they can vote someone else into office. Like Trump, who reduced taxes.

    A thought i always have about debates, is its always 2 people vying for control and to lead the conversation, this results in panic and frustration as each of their narratives collide
    and prevents reasonable discourse from taking place.
    A really good way to construct a debate would be to have 30 mins of one person leading the conversation and 30 minutes inversely

      That is assuming both parties are arguing in good faith. Destiny could probably do this because he takes notes throughout. Most people he debates do not, and are so hard set on their stance that as soon as you say anything that destroys and argument or position, they can’t wait thirty minutes to blurt out an insult to derail the conversation.

    The "its just your taste-buds" argument is not meant to show that its a simple preference to surmount, its trying to explain that its not a core need in our lives. The pleasurable sensation of swearing at some driver that cut you off, or wearing a leather gucci belt or having sex with a trafficked prostitute is a small pleasure that can be replaced. The difficulty of nudging people away from such social behaviours doesn't speak to how insignificant it is to their overall pleasure.

Still think that it's not really overriding, and there have been historical cultural practises that may have been a social glue that we don't mind throwing out. Also, yes food in general has nutritional value, but meat only has 1 or 2 irreplaceable (micro)nutrients, B12 and haema-iron i believe, and those can be gained by supplements. And anyway, the harm avoided by not consuming meat greatly outweighs any minor dietary adjustments.

    The civil war WAS fought over states rights...
    ... Slavery was one of those rights AND probably the most significant of them, but there were other states rights... Like if you look at Georgia's declaration for why they were seceding from the US, a ton of it is about slavery, but a little bit of it is still about trade and business with things like fisheries and such... It's a lot more clear in the case of South Carolina though that it wasn't JUST about slavery... Part of South Carolina's declaration for seceding focuses on the Declaration of Independence, stating:
    "In the year 1765, that portion of the British Empire embracing Great Britain, undertook to make laws for the government of that portion composed of the thirteen American Colonies. A struggle for the right of self-government ensued, which resulted, on the 4th of July, 1776, in a Declaration, by the Colonies, "that they are, and of right ought to be, FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES; and that, as free and independent States, they have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent States may of right do.
    They further solemnly declared that whenever any "form of government becomes destructive of the ends for which it was established, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new government." Deeming the Government of Great Britain to have become destructive of these ends, they declared that the Colonies "are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved."
    In pursuance of this Declaration of Independence, each of the thirteen States proceeded to exercise its separate sovereignty; adopted for itself a Constitution, and appointed officers for the administration of government in all its departments-- Legislative, Executive and Judicial.     Basically, South Carolina arguing that the founding fathers wanted them to be able to run things as an independent state and they should be able to do all the things independent states do like protect their sovereignty and such... "Thus were established the two great principles asserted by the Colonies, namely: the right of a State to govern itself; and the right of a people to abolish a Government when it becomes destructive of the ends for which it was instituted. And concurrent with the establishment of these principles, was the fact, that each Colony became and was recognized by the mother Country a FREE, SOVEREIGN AND INDEPENDENT STATE."
    For some states going by their explained reasons for seceding, a lot of it is definitely inarguably slavery, but it's not ENTIRELY slavery, some of it that isn't slavery is either tangential to slavery or particularly with South Carolina very focused on the idea of states being encouraged to be able to be functioning very autonomously from the federal government and relating the federal government of the US (which for some states was very far away on horseback) to the British who also ruled over the colonies from very far away... As a side note, the states similarly started seceding when the federal government started asserting it's authority, kinda like how the Revolutionary War occurred when the British Empire started asserting their authority (albeit to get Americans to pay for the war the British fought which mostly benefited the Americans and then the Americans were like "Nah, breh! We ain't doing that!") I think you can kinda see why some states were making comparisons to the federal government and the British Empire... Of course, unlike the British, the North won and established new things in the constitution to post-hoc explain how slavery was illegal (except as punishment for a crime) and never constitutional (even though I think you can make a good argument that it was kinda protected by the constitution and Lincoln's predecessor, Buchanan, also thought this despite also being against slavery... Like, 'property' is a social construct, black people were socially regarded at the time as property, the constitution protected people's property, so... Yeah... Also there was the fugitive slave law but that's since become irrelevant...)
    Not pro-confederacy or pro-slavery even though when I make these arguments people accuse me of it anyway, just feel like a lot of people overcompensate when hating on the confederacy... They weren't JUST favoring slavery because they were racist and liked free labor, for a time it was arguably quite important to their economy (more so a fair bit earlier than the civil war though) and there were decent arguments to be made that owning slaves (however immoral it may be) was within their rights to do going by some past documentations and such...
    ALTHOUGH people not knowing about slavery in the Thirteen Colonies? Yeah that's ridiculous...

    1:06:17 Gotta say, this guy is right... I do philosophy in university and rule utilitarianism conflicts with ethical egoism, they both have separate methodology for determining what is morally right/wrong... What Destiny is looking for is psychological egoism I think which is the idea that people are driven towards acting in their self-interest (which if you're also a rule utilitarian, you should take this into consideration when determining the rules for which you achieve your utilitarianism and I think Destiny does that...) THAT BEING SAID it's actually a bigger issue than this guy is pointing out... Destiny also calls himself a moral anti-realist at times, which is neither ethical egoist nor rule utilitarianism (though it could still be psychological egoism)... He's talked about how he thinks that morality is essentially people liking things and calling it 'good' while the things they dislike they call 'bad' and basically it's boo-hurrah theory (which leads into a terminology that I'm in favor of which I've not heard Destiny ever use after watching his videos for so long... "Emotivism", the idea that all morality is is just people saying hurrah/boo to things based on how they feel without any moral laws existing to guide morality...)
    Destiny can criticize how he doesn't want to be stuck with these labels, but DAMN it makes it confusing and impossible to pin him down on anything...
    Also Destiny is reminding me of Descartes with what he's saying about animal consciousness... Descartes thought animals were basically like robots, so he butchered dogs quite brutally and like apparently I'm just reading now that he nailed his wife's dog to a board and chopped it open to prove his point... I feel like this is where Destiny's arguments are heading... Just to be clear, we can tell that animals experience pain and one would think that conscious experience is necessary to experience pain...

Just because some asshole gets a spray tan doesn’t mean there aren’t people who literally just get dark as fuck in the summer.       @Edward Schwartz Destiny fails to take into account that a 2 year old is no longer reliant on the mother's body. A two year old can be handed over to anyone. Maybe not without consequence, but it is no longer "her body" and thus not her choice.

    Isn't an important point on substituting for example industrial cow milk with some random humans milk(over for example goat milk or just cow milk of a different fat% and/or label) is that the cow(or goat) milk is going to be regulated and tested for disease etc while you have no idea what will come with that humans milk...? On top of the societal expectation argument obviously.
    If we had regulated/tested human milk(or in-restaurant milk...ers[? lol]) and the society where this is taking place was fairly used to it then it wouldn't be a big deal.
    But if we have a scenario where the society is fairly used to it but someone who isn't tested/regulated/whatever is smuggling their milk in your food without your knowledge that's still morally bad.

    Destiny's argument against neopronouns is bad, here is a better one. First, verbs and adjectives are open classes of words, which means that we can invent new ones easily, we invent new verbs and adjectives all the time. Pronouns are more like conjunctions and prepositions, they are a closed class of words that almost never takes new members - when there is change it's gradual over centuries and very limited in scope. A good example is the replacement of the English 2nd person singular thou/thee/thy/thine/etc pronouns with the 2nd person plural pronouns you/ye/your/yours/etc, as well as the removal of the 2nd person accusative "ye" and its replacement with "you." This took a couple hundred years and was bitterly resisted by many people along the way but it did actually happen. But certainly not by fiat, and not quickly or easily, so anybody insisting that pronoun change can be quick or easy or accomplished in a single generation is off their rocker. AND this was a set of pronouns just being deleted, not a set of pronouns being added, which to my knowledge happens so rarely that we can basically say it doesn't happen - but in a world where people "live" increasingly on the internet, who the fuck knows. It's all some extremely online shit to me.
    Second, pronouns are NOT used in place of proper names, only third person pronouns are and this is incidental (you would never replace "you" or "I" with a proper name in a grammatically correct sentence), nor are they at all related to personal identity - the function of pronouns is to reference the flow of the conversation respective to speaker, audience, and referent. They are about as generic and non-personal as words can get. In English and some other languages, some pronouns do something else - they indicate gender. For whatever reason, this function stuck around, because it obviously has considerable utility, because gender (which, until the 60s or so, included the concept of biological sex) matters. Whether somebody is a he or a she is literally the most important thing about them. It's the first thing you'll note about them and it's the last thing you'll forget. And that's okay. I understand why some don't like it. But the attempt to strip this function out of pronouns is inherently a political effort aimed to undermine the importance that humans put on gender, and it is most definitely doomed to fail - but, in a transhumanist future, where people will want to design brains the way they will want to design bodies, who the fuck knows?
    Bottom line, you're right to resist this garbage because it's retarded, and I say this as a far leftist whom many would call an SJW.

    Is taxation theft? Perhaps taxation without representation could be considered such, but not when we have representation. And then the fact that the rich are few, and the majority can exert more power on our representatives, is then balanced by the fact that the rich have more power and can, themselves, exert greater influence on our representatives. It just doesn't seem the same situation as theft
