Excellent recap, neither more nor less than we need to know. Only nine minutes of your time but worth it to fully enjoy Season 3. Congratulations BBC on still producing quality drama in these challenging times. How wonderful that Sally Wentworth planned this series 5 years ago waiting for Ryan to grow up. Speaks volumes that nearly everyone involved with this was still on board and what a joy it is to see them all again.
Can’t believe we have a third season coming, I thought it was going to be one of those shows that I fall in love with but then disappears. Amazing writing and Sarah Lancashire is incredible.
@Girl101 they all like doing the show, series 3 was always going to be the last one, they waited because they needed the actor for Ryan to be a lot older for thr sake of the story as they didn't want to recast
Yes I remember that Sally Wainwright had said she wanted the Ryan character to be older as it would make for more stories between he and TLR. Sarah Lancashire was mentally exhausted from playing Catherine because of all the tragedy that the character goes through, that takes it out of some actors & actresses and Wainwright would have continued with other series if Sarah had been on board but many shows stop because the lead actor doesn’t want to go on, Sarah is a huge star in the UK of course, and the actors often make stories better than the writer wrote them, hence why if you miscast an actor then it can ruin a show.
The fact that I have been waiting with bated breath for this third season for SEVEN YEARS, that should tell people how amazing this show is. I'm so happy season three is finally here!
I had never watched Happy Valley but when I heard how thrilling the last series was I binged watched the whole thing. Superb writing and Sarah Lancashire is an amazing actor.
The valley that makes me happy! Every actor/character is top-notch, and the writing is exemplary. Sarah Lancashire is a force, as always. Her command of the screen and detail-filled portrayal of Catherine--staggering. I just want to hug her and tell her everything will be alright.
Thanks so much for this comprehensive and well-written commentary on the wonderful Happy Valley series 1 and 2. Really loving series 3 at the moment, the best hour of my TV week.
I absolutely love Sarah, I first became aware of her in Last Tango in Halifax. I watched the first two seasons of Happy Valley on Acorn TV. I think I have watched both shows at least 20 times.
Me too! Heard some of the family talking about it over Xmas dinner this (well last technically) year lol. Thought I'd give it a go and started watching it last night ...I'm hooked already x

@@rubytuesday7225 The 1st and 2nd series was on Netflix but think it’s no longer there. Aside from iPlayer, don’t know where you can see it. Maybe order the DVDs online?
I am not watching it anymore, I found certain scenes too🙈to watch, deep and inappropriate for my viewing! I don’t want to think about a certain scene! why did they make some scenes so disturbing to watch?! I wouldn’t be rushing to watch it again!
So much thanks for the recap. Season 1 seemed like a life time ago. Forgot a lot if stuff. Season 2 as well now feels like I have NEVER watched it. Can’t even remember seeing Tommy in prison and the bald dude murdering a woman copying serial killer. I have just paused Season 3 Episode 1 at 6:00 to come here and recap, because I couldn’t remember a lot of stuff. Now it seems like I will have watch (rewatch) the entire season 2 before I kick off with season3. Damn!
Absolutely bereft that the full show isn’t on iPlayer, I really don’t think I’m going to be able to wait a week between each episode! Genuinely one of the best shows of all time
Thank you for this recap, especially as the ABCTV here in Australia chose not to let us rewatch the first two series on the internet via their iview player, despite there being such a long break between series 2 & 3!
Fantastic recap of one of the best series ever! Anything being written by Sally Wainright and starring Sarah Lancashire is a winner (Siobhan Finneran and James Norton are always fantastic as well). Impatiently waiting for this to be released to stream in the US! Is this on Britbox..I may need to re-subscribe.
I don’t know why but I’ve just been watching this recap and have this weird feeling that by the end of series 3 the big explosive ending we’ve been told about it’s going to be that Ryan is not really Tommy’s son. I’ve just now had this weird thought suddenly while watching this recap to prepare myself for S3. 1/22/23
It was such a long gap btw s2 & s3 to where now that I've binged s1 & s2 in preparation for s3, I realise how mare of easttown could be inspired by happy valley.
the only flaw in the plot is why didnt John burn Vicky's body in the fire? How did he get her body out of the apartment? Still a fantastic series with brilliant script & acting.
He'd know that a fire wouldn't necessarily guarantee any sort of prevention of identification, and instead a genuine body to be found allowed John to make it looks like someone else had done it. A fire wouldn't have matched the MO of the serial killer and would have led to more questions as why and how that person had been killed. A body would've opened the flat fire to full police inquiry - not just a fire service investigation. Getting her body out of the apartment is a fair question though - but I'm pretty sure some removed scene showed that it was an upstairs flat with a rear, private entrance leading down to the parking area - so not impossible to believe he couldn't waited till the right time and move it into a car i suppose?
I love the show, best drama I've ever seen....butvif I had a choice to live in happy valley or Albert Square I'd choose Albert Square everytime as there is less psychos live there and its a bit quieter!
The season 2 arc with John and Vicky and the serial killer were unnecessary and added nothing to Catherine's personal story. Let's hope S3 stays on course and can tell a more compelling story.
The season 2 serial killer adds thematic value too. The serial killer's mother, like Katherine, has to confront the possibility that her son (in Katherine's case her grandson) is monstrous. The farmer's mother has to make the decision of Katherine's nightmares
I like the way Seasons 2 and 3 show that you don’t have to be a narcissist and a psychopath brought up by a heroin addict to commit a murder. And Catherine does have a day job in addition to protecting her family from Tommy Lee Royce.
