  • We now return to the mysterious King of Salem, Melchizedek, who blessed Abram and “brought out bread and wine (Genesis 14:18 RSVCE).” He is identified as “the priest [כֹּהֵן kohen] of God Most High (Genesis 14:18 RSVCE).” This is the first time out of 750 that the Bible explicitly uses the term kohen to call someone a priest. Abram responds by giving “a tenth of everything”. (Genesis 14:20 RSVCE) In interpreting this encounter, Hebrews states, “It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior (Hebrews 7:7 RSVCE).” Afterwards, it is explained that the priesthood of Jesus Christ is “according to the order of Melchizedek” and not “according to the order of Aaron (Hebrews 7:11 RSVCE)” for Christ’s priesthood is “not according to the legal requirement concerning bodily descent but by the power of an indestructible life (Hebrews 7:16 RSVCE).”
