    What an inspirational account of your hike. You will empower many women, including me, to be out there and take chances, to be honest with ourselves about our fears and to face them head on not run from them. You did a most wonderful job of showing the true full spectrum of emotion that a person experiences when doing something like this. It’s not all happiness and sunshine. WELL DONE!

    Well done Tara. That was a great honest account. Your situation on the cliff would have scared most others (including me). The fact that you kept it together and coped is a tribute to your courage. Future challenges that you encounter (on and off the trail) will be so much easier because of this great experience.

      My trick was to try to save (most of) my tears for later on, when I was safe in my tent. As soon as I completely give into tears, I panic.

      Thank you. I have always had a strong emotional connection to life, and as I get older, I am more and more open about what I believe to be healthy ways to express emotion. In this case, I barrelled through the challenge, and then BAWLED my eyes out in my tent when I was supposed to be eating dinner. Seemed like a safer place to let my emotions run wild. In the moment, I cried a bit, but just kept going.

    What an achievement Tara. You are one brave and determined soul. I love that you show your true emotions. That cliff looked terrifying, but you were able to process it on the one level in the moment by removing the emotion until it was safe to feel it. That is the definition of bravery. Loved watching your thru hike. Thanks for taking us along. You inspire me.

    I was on this channel because I'm researching tents, I got much more than I was searching for.
    But more importantly, you Tara got more than you were looking for! When we are honest, vulnerable, open and receptive; when we aren't trying to race through life or a hike, we see, we feel, we know exponentially what is both around us and within us.
    I was very blessed by your journey and how you chose to share it - because you certainly didn't have to. Inspirational. Passionate. Dynamic and yes scary to the point of frightening at times, and then having pushed through - beautiful!
    It was not lost to me or anyone the support of your husband, no doubt he is very proud of you in many many ways.
    I also greatly appreciate that you took God along with you - He truly was by your side the entire way. Then, now and forever. Amen.
    Sorry for the long post - just truly grateful for what you have shared. You did this great adventure and filmed it, adding yet another dimension to your journey.
    Blessings to you, your family and business.

    One of my formative childhood experiences was a long midwinter dunk in river rapids in cotton clothing. Another kid got caught in a hydraulic and survived only because he was able to occasionally surface for a breath, and an adult risked their life to go after him. Afterward, shivering uncontrollably, gear soaked, worried about hypothermia, and having to keep my numb fingers closed around the paddle. I'd still rather have that experience than your La Coulotte scramble: I hate heights. But you carried through. Hope it turned out to be "type 2 fun" in retrospect.

    • @tarafrey-durston2606
      @tarafrey-durston2606 3 года назад +1

      I think the 10m statement is a bit misleading - it started as roughly that close to the trail, and then as I continued to skirt around the cliff band (as opposed to stay on the ridge where the actual trail was), I got gradually further and further away. By the time I realized my mistake, I was significantly off route. In hindsight, turning around would have made more sense, but I was scared by some of the things I went through, and thought going straight up to the ridge was safer...but I was mistaken! Oh well - live and learn :)

    Nail biter! but seeing that (Apache Bloom, I think.) going to seed, then finishing the trail. Superb. Those petrifying crux moments reminds me of when I was a kid living in Jasper for a couple of summers. My room mate took me up the snow filled cirque under Edith Cavell. It was almost vertical when we got to the top.. No gear, he just made steps for me. After climbing up over the edge, in dread I realized I couldn't go back down and I just crumbled. He said you can't go back down... whaaaa!!?? we had to go up a bit further, much calmer and then a fun glissade down a long gentle snowfield to the bottom of the valley. I spoke to the Warden Service several years later about it, and he was pretty upset I got led up that. There isn't any snow in that cirque any longer I don't think. Thanks for bringing back that memory.. pretty gutsy gal there.

      This is the only time on the GDT (at least the official route) when you have to bag a peak - well, even that's not entirely true since there is a way to "skirt around" the peak if you are going NOBO on the official route. Since I was going SOBO and on an alternate, I had to do it, but trust me, if there were a way around, I would have taken it! I am just so grateful that I didn't have to do any down climbing after the summit - I would have lost it. :)

Dan has been very patient with me as I very slowly grew to love backpacking, but always with him at first. Until this GDT hike, I had never spent a night alone in a tent! Talk about going all in! • @tarafrey-durston2606
      @tarafrey-durston2606 3 года назад +2

      There wasn't a lot of cutting people out of the video - I honestly didn't see a lot of people! This video covers section A of the GDT. When I was starting the section (going SOBO, leaving Coleman), I saw 4 other GDT thru-hikers who were going NOBO and on their way to town. The next day, I didn't see any other hikers on the trail, but camped at a popular area (South Fork Lakes) with maybe 15 other people. Day 3 was on Barnaby Alternate, and I saw no one - that's the day I got off route and only hiked 14km in 9 hours. The next day was La Coulotte day, and again, I saw no other hikers. The next day I hiked to Waterton Lakes townsite, and saw no one hiking on the trail, except for when I passed through Red Rocks area where there were hoards of tourists looking at the river and whizzing around in cars.
      It honestly depends on where you are on the GDT. Some areas one can go 5+ days without seeing other hikers, and other times you could see over 50.

You have all the ability to do it alone but sometimes what we think are flaws, make us perfect. It's not a flaw to trust in Dan and enjoy somethings together instead of alone.
