Great Divide Trail - A 900km path through the canadian rockies

- Three years after a first attempt that failed, here is the story of my successful comeback in the canadian rockies.
In the summer of 2019, I left Quebec City to embark on the Great Divide Trail, a wild, remote and less-known long-distance trail, with the mission to link Waterton Lakes National Park to the city of Jasper.
I knew it wasn't going to be easy but it definitely tested me.
Through unstopping rain, voracious mosquitoes, constant ups and downs and incredible vistas; This is the story of a successful thru-hike.
.
Thank you to Kayman, Alyssa, but musly Brian and Quin, a magnificient duo of a dad and his son that I met along the way at a critical time of my hike. Without them, everything would have been different. Big shout out to both of you. I love you.
.
I have to thank HappyYak, a freeze-dried meal company that supported me during this adventure. I was really glad to have hot meals that I really looked forward to eating after long, cold and wet days. Thank you for your incredible support.
.
To those who understands (and those who don't) why I have to go do these trails but are still there when I come back : thank you.

Nice edit and narrative
Thank you Reynan!
Brilliant that, Marc-Andre! I was searching YT for a series of Great Divide Trail vlogs - I wanna see it all of course! But your film sums your journey and the trail very well. What a stunning trail. I really hope I get the time to do it. Greetings from England. Elton.
Thank you Elton! Im glad you liked it!!
Thank you, who knows maybe one day we will meet on the trails...
Go for it!
Simply amazing
Thank you!!
Bravo! En quel mois as-tu commencé la traversée? Début Juillet?
Great documentary. Did you start this July 1st 2019?
Hey Will! I started June 25 or 26 I believe. I was in Blairmore on July 1st, I remember stressing to know if the grocery store would be open! haha
Absolutely fantastic stuff, Marc-André. Merveilleux! Bien fait. Thanks for documenting that so beautifully and so honestly.
Thank you! It is a brutal but incredibly rewarding hike.
Hey Marc I loved the video! i was wondering what camera you filmed with and did you run into any issues staking a nonfreestanding tent on the trail? As I know some campsites in the national parks are quite hard to stake into, thanks!
I filmed with a Sony A6300 with 2 manual lenses (16 and 50mm). Had no issues whatsoever with staking my tent :) Some grounds were harder (was happy I had a Tyvek) but always managed to stake it!
Très beau vidéo! Ça donne envi. Viens faire la Canol Heritage Trail ici! C'est du Yukon vers le NWT.
Whynot!! Ce serait fou!!
Wow, this was beautifully filmed. And the hike looks incredible.
Thank you very much ✌️
I just did my first hike up turtle mountain.. Think I'm ready for this now.. Who's coming?
Oh my God!,,,
Bears all over..
Not even! Didn't see a single bear on the trail!
Such a thoroughly and well edited video of this length and quality deserves more attention, great work!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for this amazing movie, had great pleasure following your adventures
Thank you Paul for watching it! I hope you can get a taste of adventure wherever you are! Take care
Seems you got more than your fair share of rain .
Yeah it was brutal but I still have fond memories of this trip!
Yes we remember the good bits better than the not so good .
Thank you. Beautiful story and landscapes. Loved you shout out to your companions
Cheers from Yukon
Thanks my fgriend!
Wow! Will be following in your footsteps soon enough buddy. Im amazed your channel hasnt blown up considering how well made this video is. Awesome stuff man :)
Hey Callum! I'm not active enough for the algorithm ;) I appreciate your comment! Hope you have a safe travel on the GDT! I'm headed on the CDT this year!
Wow. Grew up in that area, never knew anyone who hiked the whole trail from Blairmore to Jasper! That's a big deal.
Yes! You can start at Waterton and hike all they way to Kakwa Lake up north of Jasper! I'm coming back to hike that very last section (jasper-kakwa).
It is an incredibly rewarding but very tough hike!
Its right there :)
Merci!!
Absolutely gorgeous! And beautiful film editing!
Thanks Heather!!
@5:02 - was that a regular thing where you had to climb over fallen trees? I'm thinking about cycling the route, and that would be an unfortunate situation if I had to unpack and carry my bike past things like that. Thanks for the great video. I always love seeing people document their journeys :)
Sorry but the GDT doesnt seem doable in bicycle to me. Most of the trail is pedestrian only, with some contained in National and Provincial parks where biking is prohibited on hiking trails. I know there is the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, which would be a better choice for you I think :)
Anyways, thanks for the good comments!
@@SteezWhizy Wow - thanks for the quick response! I'm aware of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, and it looks amazing. Most of the info I could find was for the US side (sadly closed to us Canucks at this time). I was a little confused regarding the Canadian side, and the GDT, and if they were the same. But, it appears they do not follow the same route. I will follow your advice and NOT attempt the trail with a bike. Thanks :)
Truly inspirational. Thank you. You're truly a great filmmaker.
Thank you!!
Would this trail be doable on a bike?
Not the actual Great Divide Trail but there is the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route that you could check out! I was on the trail again this summer and met a group of 4 in Peter Lougheed that were doing it!
Very good video. Perfect cuts
Thank you Roman!
Any new hikes coming up?
CDT 2023 Sobo!!
WOW amazing! Très inspirant.
Merci beaucoup :)
Great video Mon Ami!
Merci beaucoup!
Merci beaucoup pour le bon commentaire!! C'était une sacré aventure!
Fantastic! Thank you!!
Thank you!!
Wow, I really really loved and appreciated this film. My partner and I are doing it next July. I cannot wait for all these adventures. This was such a meaningful film, and one I loved watching and seeing you persevere and become someone else. Love and light.
Thank you so much!! I hope your planning is going well and dont forget to train! The train is rewarding!!
What an experience🤔💭🧐
It was insane! I'm actually returning this year!
That bout of low morale after heading off alone, gosh I felt that in my bones. Reminded me of the first time I was trekking through a remote bit of Lapland all by myself. The isolation hit me in the guts and had me cry like a bebbe. Glad even a more experienced hiker isn't entirely immune to that.
Oh man, one cannot hide behing his feelings, better face them and embrace them, it makes you stronger !
That’s amazing! Super beau! Vous êtes hardcore!
Merci :D
I don't know why this doesn't have more views yet. I was looking for a trip just like yours! I would love to hike this trail, with the good and the bad!
Help spread the word ;) I hope you got to hike the trail soon! It's getting constant improvements, the trail will be very different in just a couple years!
Wow... just amazing, great job on a bucket list hike. beautiful video and editing. Can't wait to see more
Hopefully sooner than later :)
Amazing & Inspiring!!! Thank you for sharing your journey with us! 🏔🏔🏔🏔🥾🥾🌎✨
Thank you!!!
This is incredible man, thanks for the inspiration 🙏
Thank you Chris! Means alot to me ✌️
Nicely done! Ah man...your edit makes me feel all the feels - really yearning for the mountains these days.
I'm craving the mountains... Had to cancel 2 long distance hikes (Arizona trail thru and Colorado trail thru), missing the hiking lifestyle SO bad.
@@SteezWhizy that's an absolute bummer. Keep on stoking the fire in what ways you can - this too will change!
Looks great! What camera/lens did you use for this video?
Hey! Thanks!
I used my Sony A6300 with a fixed 16mm f2. 8 and a fixed 50mm f1. 7 and tried my best to be as stable as possible
@@SteezWhizy Nice! I'm using a similar camera for my hikes (A6400 with Sony 24mm f1.8 Zeiss lens) and it has no stabilization either, I do the same, trying to hold it steady. Another question: Did you use a LUT for this video and if so which one? And which drone for the aerial shots?
@@BackpackingVideos I did use a Lut from Lutify to unify the whole thing together, but lots of the color grading was done manually (long and painful task haha)
For the Drone I used my Mavic Air, and I flew it only in areas where it was legal to do so (so very little on the GDT). In fact, I sent it home after 1 week because of the National Park incoming (where it is illegal to fly a drone)
Loved your video, super inspiring, keep moving brother!
Thank you brother!!
Bravo ! Super inspirant !
Merci Olivier!
Enjoy !
@@nomad76112 Oh yes tu va tripper! Bonne préparation!
nice cinematographic touches! Very professional!
Thank you!!
@@SteezWhizy Do you have a source of information that you used to learn these excellent techniques?
@@adventuremuffinproductions hey! I tought I had answered you, but realised I didn't! I went to film school, and I have been using cameras since I was really young, time did it's job ;) I'm a director of photography in the ''real world'' !
Great video ! and good editing too,
Thank you so much!!
Very nice !!!
Thank you!!
AWESOME FILM! BRAVO!
Thank you so much!!
@@SteezWhizy What camera did u use to shoot it with?
@@gfree8037 Sony a6300 with a 16mm f2. 8 fixed and a 50mm f1. 7 fixed :)
@@SteezWhizy I am thinking about buying a 6400 for my PCT hike. What do you think? I you only brought one lens what would you take? Do you think the a7iii is worth the money?
@@gfree8037 choosing a camera is such a personnal choice that it'd be hard for me to give you an honest advice. One thing to know tho is that lenses for full frame cameras are usually bigger and heavier, so that may not be good if you have to carry it for 2650 miles 🤔 it all depends on you.
