  • This is a Handi pumpless fuel iron made in 1954. It is made in Brisbane, Australia (despite the box which states "All British"). I show how to ignite the iron and use it to iron my shirt.
I give a brief discussion of the history of this type of iron.

My mother used that exact same iron as you had when we were caravanning around Australia in the late 50's. They look rather dangerous, really, to use in a small enclosed space. I remember being in a caravan park, in Adelaide, and seeing a lady inside a caravan ironing away with one glowing!

If the control valve is jammed don't force it. Just gently heat it with a propane torch which will soften the varnish and it should come loose. You will likely need a new seal on the filler cap like mine did.
I have ordered some graphite tape from the Fettlebox in the UK to replace the valve gland seal on mine so it should sort that leak out.
Stay tuned for an upcoming video on a Tilley DN 250 pressure iron. I am just waiting for a seal kit then I will put up a video of that.

I think a little black powder would help it "pressurize".
