You are correct. He was irresponsible regarding his kidney.
Nonethless, he made. an indelible impact on the lives of thousands of schoolboys through his amazing skills. He was a fragile human being, and we should forgive him his weaknesses in return for the many pleasures he gave us when in his prime on the football field.

The best British player ever. My favourite goal was against Chelsea at Old Trafford. It was chucking it down with rain and the pitch was a bog. Johnny Aston put a beautiful pass through to George. As he approached the penalty area Ron "Chopper" Harris tried to put him into the stand, George rode the challenge, walked the ball round Peter Bonetti and tapped into the empty net. It is only one of so many great memories from my visits to Old Trafford in the 60s. Pure genius.

Man U v Everton on a Wednesday night, no tv cameras. The game finished 0 - 0, but George picked up the ball in his own penalty area from an Everton corner, went the full length of the pitch beating player after player to the Everton penalty area, rounded Gordon West only for his goal bound shot to hit an Everton defender for a Utd corner. The crowd applauded George for several minutes, unforgettable for anyone there that night

Has to be that goal against Sheffield United when Man U. were beginning to struggle a bit in the early 70's. He decided to take the WHOLE defence on with that terrific close control and blinding pace. The keeper was expecting a near post shot but George amazingly beat Jim Brown with a far post shot. Wonderful goal and probably the BEST I have ever seen to this day. Just fantastic and with Coleman commentating also.

There's no debate to be had, George was the greatest player of all time. Both here and abroad. Not just for his legendary skill, but his bravery, his tackling, his heading, his reading of the game. And of course, the fairy dust, that liberal sprinkling of genius.

My favourite memory of this brilliant player, really isn't football related. Back in 1980, my amateur team I played for, here in Canada, was invited to an invitational tournament in Los Angeles. Our manager at the time was the father of a player on the Aztecs named John McGrane. John and George had become good friends and most people knew that George Best had a restaurant in LA called Besties. He invited our team to his restaurant on one of our days off from the tournament. It was a Sunday brunch and he put on quite a spread for our team. He came out and chatted to all of us like he was our best friend. A genuine great guy and I was lucky to have met him.

Chelsea vs Utd an evening game at Stamford Bridge in the 1964-5 season. He relentlessly destroyed poor Ken Shellito, the very capable Chelsea right back, and caused the Chelsea defence to be in panic and disarray throughout the game. No attempted brutality by Ron Harris and co could stop George. To give them credit the astonished Chelsea crowd also marveled at his skills and were full of praise for his miraculous performance. Everyone present that September night new then, if they didn't know it before, they had watched a unique footballing genius.

George Best played football to entertain the crowds - fans who paid to watch football from their hard earned money.
He was an entertainer and was the best in the world at it. I can recall one event, where on kick-off, Denis Law bet him a fiver he couldn't take the ball to the other end without the ball touching the ground. Denis paid up after the match.
He refused to go down under heavy tackles unlike many others and even more so in today's football. There are great players who play either right or left legged but the player who uses either foot is the better footballer.
Hairs at the back of my neck would stand up when Georgie was in the opposition's half. No footballer since has come close.
