This is a really powerful trailer. I think it's the Thompson Twins song as well as lines like, "I know you hate me, but you have to help me" that really makes this thing hit so hard.
The incomparable Jackie Gleason in his final role. Unknown to almost all, even while filming this movie, he was suffering from colon and liver cancer and thrombosed hemorrhoids.
This truly is my favorite Tom Hanks film. Besides being great to look at, he delivers a sensitive yet comedic portrait of a son dealing with aging parents. I have the soundtrack on CD which is fantastic. It includes my favorite Carly Simon song “If it wasn’t love.”
My father passed 2 years ago at nearly 102; Gleason and he grew up a few blocks apart in Brooklyn; Jackie was born few years before dad. They sounded exactly alike. Whenever I hear Gleason speak, it's eerily similar to my father.
I love movies like this one. I decide to watch them just because my favorite actors were in them but they end up becoming my favorite. This is how life is. We gotta start to value our friends, family, moments before they kick the bucket. Tom turned a lotta good films into memorable sweet ones just by being the terrific actor that he is. The women were beautiful here. Jackie Gleason sure killed it. *22 May 2024*
The Carly Simon song & montage, "If it wasn't love at all" still nails me because Bess reminds me of my ex a great deal. This movie is not only up there with CRAZY PEOPLE & How to Get A Head in Advertising as an adman flick, it also perfectly captures the essence of the late 80's romantic zeitgeist.
Although this film didn't really do well at the box office, it marked Tom Hanks' steps into starring into a mainly serious type of role despite the film being comical.
I was an extra on the set with Hanks and Gleason and my coworker Randy Bower's and they said I won the gross out funny contest with a pix of my daughter's excriments taken that day that I was worried about and had a polaroid pix of and then my poop on a string story instead of soap on a roap. A great memory hanging on set laughing with them.
I finally got around to seeing this movie. It was... okay. It was just okay. The biggest problem I had with it: this felt like a Lifetime movie that just happened to be well-made in places. Individual moments work quite well, such as the scenes between Gleason and Hanks. Those moments felt real. Unfortunately, the movie barely even has moments like that. It's mostly trying to tackle way too much (the business deal at the advertising agency, Hanks' exciting fling with Sela Ward, his best female friend who he has a real connection with, and his father losing his job and dealing with a worsening case of diabetes), the parents splitting up feels like a total afterthought and yet it's showcased in this trailer as the main throughline of the picture. Truth is, this movie doesn't know which of its stories it wants to focus on. And, so, for two hours, we just watch this movie doing everything but what the trailer promised. It was a really frustrating watch because all the other stuff that isn't about the parents is very predictable if you've ever seen a movie before. You know who Hanks is going to wind up with in the end, you know which path in life he's going to choose, and none of it is a surprise.
This is Jackie Gleason's last movie. Dad says that this movie is more serious than humorous, because this movie focuses on a man taking care of his dying father.
@elcosquillero84 I got this on DVD for Christmas of last year and I LOVE it, especially since I am a longtime fan of Tom Hanks and you are RIGHT, this is one of the BEST movies of the '80s. Couldn't agree more!
I would like to think that many watchers of this movie watch it in a rather superficial fashion. The movie needs more views than one for you to realise that most scenes says at least two things or are links to what is to come further on. Just love this move and what it tries to do - and yes: you can't help but get a slight crush on Donna Mildred Martin. Bess Armstrong is such an undervalued actress and adds such a lovely energy to the flick.
Would you happen to have the soundtrack? If you do could you upload it? Just a shot in the dark. This is definitely one ofTom hanks' great movies. Thanks.
Great film but sometimes hard to watch as this would be Jackie Gleason's last film. He was not well by then but closed out his career with a great performance. If I ever met Tom Hanks I would ask him what it was like to work with the legend. Gleason had such an amazing life and career. He went away for a long time then came back in 1978 at age 62 and established new stardom with the younger generation in the Smokey & the Bandit films as well as others. He was as busy in the 1980s as ever.
They're probably just good friends (Garry's only 2 years older than Hector, so that makes sense). Hector is to Garry Marshall what John Ratzenberger is to Pixar.
What is the name of the song when they watch the stallion have sex and they song is playing in the background? I can't find it anywhere, it has the lyrics burning heart but it is different to the richard marx one
I have this movie on DVD. I could be wrong I know the Thompson Twins song is obviously in the end credits. But didn't it appear as background music in one of the Shenanigans bar scenes?
Movie had great performances, but was slow, predictable and cliched. Were it not for the strength of Hanks and Gleason's performances alone, the movie would have been unwatchable. Their performances kept it watchable at best, and forgettable at worst. Hanks did better in Big two years later which was directed by Penny Marshall the sister of this film's director Garry. Even Garry had better films later on, Overboard the following year and Pretty Woman four years later. As for Gleason this was a great final performance, but it was just in the wrong movie. He deserved a better story and script than this.
This is the worst movie Tom Hanks ever made. It is so wretched with that sappy 80's keyboard soundtrack. Most people can't make ity through this trailer, let alone over 2 hours of this movie.
A highly underrated film. Jackie Gleason's final film performance is a gem. Hanks is brilliant, as usual.
Beautiful and personal film. So many of us have lived this life and dealt with this level of family struggle.
This is far and away, Tom Hank's best movie. It wasn't a great success but it showed his fantastic personality.
Cast Away makes this performance look like a walk in the park
Very underrated film. Easily Gary Marshal's best.
I watched this about a month ago. This movie has real deep meaning. I love it.
This truly is my favorite Tom Hanks film. Besides being great to look at, he delivers a sensitive yet comedic portrait of a son dealing with aging parents. I have the soundtrack on CD which is fantastic. It includes my favorite Carly Simon song “If it wasn’t love.”
I love that song.
this is a movie u can laugh and cry at i loved this movie
I think this is one of the greatest films ever made. And the soundtrack was amazing, too.
It's better than shawshank redemption
@@troll-fx2zc overstatement of the century
Don't go overboard
@@CHIKIS748 You could not name one better.. This is a better film than the godfather, shawshank and pee wee Herman's big adventure.

I would have liked to have seen some of the things your dad saw. Maybe not in NYC but I do wish I wasn't born so late (1954)
As Hanks fame grew, this film marked Tom Hanks transition to less developed comedic roles to more serious stories

Happy 100th birthday, Eve Marie Saint, this was a great film.

I Have "If It Wasn't Love At All" 0n My Playlist!!!!!! L0VE That Song!!!!!!
1:00 David "So, Mom left". Max "Do you see anyone else here"? Classic Jackie Gleason comeback line. Damn Jackie was the best.
Well, besides you and me, I would've asked him, then said, no.
sha11235 XD
Carroll was better
one of my favorites ever. this and " ordinary people". fantastic real life movies.
Tom Hanks ❤️🔥
100% dedication
2 great actors! This is one of my favorites..
I miss the old Tom Hanks. He knew where my funnybone was.
RIP to Garry Marshall.
its amazing the actor Tom Hanks has become truly talented.
Tom Hanks is doing drama movies now. He made a switch, from comedy to drama.
This movie felt like a pivot point in Hanks career.
I love Gleason's voice on the answering machine.
This is a very good movie. Comedy and drama - there are some great scenes with Hanks.
Hey, looks like an awesome movie!! Can't wait to watch it! Thanks for providing the trailer footage guys! :)
1:12 was funny to me when he tried to steal the apple..lol
Never knew the great Jackie Gleason was actor Jason patric grandfather..
Just bought this can’t wait to watch it
And of course Jason Patric's father was actor/writer Jason Miller.

Great movie! 😊 ❤
My favorite Tom Bailey movie...
I agree, Miss Alison. =)
Jackie Gleason's last movie.
Jackie Gleason was a genius. A self made star
I love Gleason crashing into a bus.
I love Tom hanks

Shot at 0:46 is like a precurosr to Big.
Cool movie, sad it was his last.
Yeah, but he went out on a good note.
How can a person leave a marriage because of silence? Must be nuts.
I Have This Movie And I L0VE IT!!!!!!!!!!
I think I accidently watched this film back in 86... damn, thank God I didn't remember a damn thing about it otherwise... lol..
Would you happen to have the soundtrack? If you do could you upload it? Just a shot in the dark. This is definitely one ofTom hanks' great movies. Thanks.

@FilmStar26 The soundtrack is available on Amazon or maybe eBay.
Actually no Jackie did not have diabetes, he was suffering from colon cancer, liver cancer, and thrombosed Hemorrhoids.
The movie soundtrack was better than the movie itself!
Buena película de comedia i.romance
the trailer has the end in it???
Steve Carell's at :33 seconds.
I don't think that is him.
I thought that was him
You see anyone else here? Yeah, me and you.
They're probably just good friends (Garry's only 2 years older than Hector, so that makes sense). Hector is to Garry Marshall what John Ratzenberger is to Pixar.
I left because of the silence💀
@Ozzythenutter1046LS Yes, Jackie was suffering from diabetes.
@MIKESOWELL Jackie got those things from diabetes, smoking too much, drinking too much alcohol, and eating too many fatty foods.
This was released same day as Howard the duck.
Another classic serious film! :D Which one did better?
Marc Maron and Noah Baumbach mentioned this film.
Mix a satire/parody of the advertising world and a Death of a Salesman drama and there is your picture folks
RIP Jackie Gleason!
What is the name of the song when they watch the stallion have sex and they song is playing in the background? I can't find it anywhere, it has the lyrics burning heart but it is different to the richard marx one
Okay, how did he get all those pencils to do that?
80s trailers are so... 80s
It was a decade that will never be repeated.
Tom was cute then! Are there nude photos of Tom?
where can I find the Christopher Cross song on this soundtrack, short of buying the movie or soundtrack itself, if I can find it?
what's the song in the beginning of the movie??
It wasn't love by Carly Simon
Why does Garry always cast Hector Elizondo in every one of his films? Are they lovers or something?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
80's Tom Hanks is the better Tom Hanks.
Si.
i can't find it
Jackie Gleason's last film.
Isn't it there Steve Carell by the pay phone?
The song never appears in the film. lol
I have this movie on DVD. I could be wrong I know the Thompson Twins song is obviously in the end credits. But didn't it appear as background music in one of the Shenanigans bar scenes?
I like that someone made the decision to inform the viewer at the end of the trailer that the movie is a comedy and a drama -- just like life. Corny.
Didn't Jackie Gleason's character die in this movie?
He died after it was over.
@@EyelessRaven Yes he did die in real life not too long after this movie was made, and or released. But his movie character in this movie also died.
The original Sheldon Cooper?
Cute 😎
The following program contains Adult 👩 Language & Adult 👩 Content.
Ah yes, Sela Ward. Yum!
2:16
It came out in the summer of 1986. It was not a big success.
It was a moderate success.
Still good tho
It became more popular after home video released it. I bought a VHS tape and later converted it to DVD.
@tieti15 No
I don’t understand people get divorced all the time just divorce brah
There was a TV series after this, featuring Bill Macy. It was terrible.
Hanks has done better. Haven't you seen League of their Own, Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, and Saving Private Ryan?
Yeah, but this was the first one that really showed off his talents.
Your father and son
JACKIE GLEASON INMORTAL
dad was much better than this

Perhaps the movie was ahead of its time.
I was not pleased with this movie
Fantastic.
