There is real beer in shandy, but not enough to get pissed on. It's probably all the sugar and sweeteners added to those canned drinks that make them so palatable. Anyhow, you can have any type of beer mixed with lemonade in order for it to be classed as a shandy. The lemonade is what makes it a shandy
I loved your reaction Michelle at the ginger beer. It was like stone-age people seeing fire for the first time. LMAO ( but not in a patronising way of course) GUFFAW!
The Ben Shaw actually make lovely drinks and my fav is dandelion n burdock. These are herbs u pick and turn into a drink. So it is quite good for u. And u really cannot try all them drinks without them first being in the fridge. Sorry. Thry taste so much better chilled. So u will have to try them all again and benefit from them all being chilled they taste all so good once chilled
When you're in the store lookout for 'cream soda' not that interesting on its own but drop a lump on vanilla ice cream in it and it becomes something else in the summer.
Dandelion & Burdock is basically our Sarsaparilla. Shandy out of a can is essentially "beer-flavoured drink," the alcohol content is trace. You can order shandy in a pub and it's half beer and half lemonade in a pint glass.
I think you should be warned that if you order shandy in a pub it would be a lot stronger than that can. Shandy under 0.5% alc can be sold as a soft drink but a pub shandy is probably closer to 2% depending on how it's mixed.
Bitter Shandy is an entry level beer. It's British beer plus lemonade, half and half. It's normally a child's beer. The lemonade is to make it sweeter. What you call Beer in the USA we would call lager. Beer is sometimes called a Bitter, it is meant to have a bitter taste. Then there are Stouts. The most famous of them is Guiness. A good lager would be a Belgian lager or any Beer/Lager from Germany. Most people who are beer drinkers here in the UK think that what the USA call beer we would call 'piss beer'. That is of having virtually no alcoholic content. A good beer would have an alcoholic content of around 4-6% volume. Lager normally has about 2-3% volume. Over here you can also bring children into pubs. You can drink at the age of 18 in a pub.
Bitter shandy has a extremely low alcahol count in it it is made with a bitter beer but if I remember right I believe it’s like a 0.01% alcohol a regular bitter is between a 3 and 7% it’s perfect chilled with sea side fish and chips 👌🏻 that’s the classic combo
Shandy can be ordered in a pub as either Lager Shandy or Bitter Shandy. Servied in a pint glass, it would be half a pint lager or bitter and half a pint lemonade.
You don't like " Shandy"! Wow! This is what the nursery kids every year at their Christmas Dinner Dance. Sometimes the Toyland Police have to send in the dogs. Trust me. : - )
1) Despite the claims of Irn Bru of 'Made in Scotland - from girders', the only 'Iron' in there is a miniscule amount of Ferrous Sulphate, so little that it's undetectable in the taste. The actual contents are kept somewhat of a secret, but the flavour is very similar to Elderflower cordial, so there's a good chance that there's some of that in there. NOTE: Irn Bru is statistically 'Scotlands second favourite drink' only in parts of Scotland. Scotch Whisky is obviously first, but in certain areas of Scotland (notably Strathclyde) Irn Bru comes a poor third to 'Buckfast Tonic Wine' (which is made by monks in Devon, England) It's highly caffeinated (about twice as much as 'energy drinks',) and that, coupled with a relatively high alcohol content (15%) has been blamed for much drunkenness and hundreds of anti-social prosecutions. 2) "British since 1871 - so is this an older persons drink?" - Coca Cola - first produced in 1886 - so is that a drink for people five years younger? 3) NO there is no grape in Dandelion & Burdock 4) It isn't an energy drink. How long have you been living in the UK? I'd have thought you'd have gathered by now that UK products carry dietary information on the packaging, including how many calories (kCals) or Kilojoules are contained - these two different terms both help if you're on a calorie controlled diet and are grouped together under 'energy' because that's the energy you'll get from drinking them. 5) The amount of beer in a canned shandy is negligible. It has to have some beer in it, to allow it to be called 'shandy' (which is a beer and lemonade drink you can buy in pubs.) British beer ranges in Alcohol upwards of 3.5% - canned shandy contains about 0.05% alcohol - not much beer in there then (so it's less than 1.5% beer!) the beer flavour is artificially produced using other ingredients, mainly caramel. 6) Vimto isn't blackcurrant - it's a mixed fruit drink, where one of the ingredients is blackcurrant juice. Its taste isn't at all like blackcurrant (try Ribena blackcurrant cordial to really taste blackcurrant.) Incidentally, Vimto mixed with Bacardi white rum is much tastier than Bacardi & Coke. 7) Ginger Beer is certainly an acquired taste, and most people are shocked when they realise it tastes nothing like 'Dry Ginger Ale'. There are varying degrees of how bad Ginger Ale can be: My daughter used to think she liked Ginger Beer, until one day on a visit to the countryside, she tasted a 'traditional' Ginger Beer, which as well as tasting of ginger, also had a background flavour she could only describe as 'burnt wood'!
Irn Bru is a decent Scottish drink, bought all over the UK. Alot of people like me drink an Iron Brew and a Fried Egg Sandwich as a Hangover Cure.... Well it works for me!!! 😜
Try Shloer - grape juice in a glass bottle - Cawston Press' Rhubarb and Apple (in a can) - You might look out for flavoured crisps (Chips to you), as the UK has a different selection of flavours to the US
Shandy is usually less than 0.5% and accepted in the UK as a soft drink. We used to get cans of Lager and Lime too at a similar percentage advertised to kids mostly lol. We like our beer. Very popular in a fish and chip shop fridge usually. I was on a family holiday when I was 12 and the lady in the shop refused to sell me it so I got the manager and he said it's fine so some can be unsure of it too but it is a soft drink.
I will begin my walk of shame into the sea carrying my sack of stones and dragging my chains now that you two have dissed my favourite soft drink. It's been emotional. : _ (
"Irn Bru" is the greatest soda, and perfect for hangovers. Hey Michaela you say it tastes like cough syrup your doctor would give you? Who was your doctor, because I want to be his patient. Was it Doctor Wonka? : - ) The " tag" line for Irn Bru was " Made in Scotland From Girders."
The shandy has so little alcohol in it it's practically non alcoholic that's why it's in the soft drink section of the shops we used to drink it at kids and it was even sold at our schools sweet/tuck shop at break times
Britain invented pop as we know it, so a lot of the original drinks were botanical because of the temperance movement they may seem weird but they do work, some of the original drinks like dandelion and burdoch are nice, it is generally what you are brought up on
With the bitter shandy, the bitter part refers to the beer it's made from. The shandy part means it's mixed with lemonade. In most pubs you will be able to order a shandy made from almost any draught beer you choose. I suggest you try cider, made from apples. There are many different types, some very carbonated, some not. Find the one you like and it's a very refreshing drink on a warm day.
the one you order in the resturant is a cordial meant for alchohol nobody drinks that alone. IRN BRU is a medicenal drink full of iron apparently, the most famous medicanal drink in the UK was Lucozade and if i remember right was only ever found in a pharmacists, Ginger beer is called beer because its actually brewed. Dandelion and burdock are the roots of the plants and one of my fav's i would compare it to docter pepper ish.
@@travelingfamilyoffive yeh it is now but its been in pharmacies since the 1920's in the original form,my mum used to give it to us kids when we were sick. the days before energy drinks were a thing. Bitter Shandy does contain bitter beer, but by definition it has to have no more than 2 percent alcohol in it, however if it is purchased at a pub or bar it can be as strong as the server feels like making it. Another type of soda or pop for you to try, if you can find it, is Tizer.
D&B is my favourite. It's like a root beer because it is one. Dandelion and burdock roots. A shandy in a pub is half bitter or lager and half (fizzy) lemonade. The soft drink shandies are much, much less beer. They're like 0.5% alcohol only.
Shandy is alcoholic yes, however it is considered a soft drink. Soft drinks in the U.K. are able to be bought by anyone. Shandy is a weak drink generally 0.5%, it is allowed as it is weak enough. There are no laws on how you place products in the U.K. as such when it comes to drinks, that is left to the company, although you tend to find they’re separated.
I always ask for a Bitter/Lager Shandy at Pubs this Is 50% lemonade /50% beer and there is no Loss of face it does look like a proper pint My other drink is Mild which is similar to stout and when I was in Ireland They were ????? on this But knew Shandy (Lager version only) Barrs also make Tizer In several Flavours and As you have tried Vimto Look out for Ribena PS Somebody Spotted Michelle had the Vimto in the same cup as ginger beer previously No wonder you did not Like it Next up for you Girls Must be the Cream Soda vs American Cream Soda test?
Real Dandelion and Burdock was a middle ages drink made from the two plants into a mead. The soft drink version is simply an attempt to mimic the taste. The real thing can still be bought in some places.
If you buy cans of Shandy, it is classed as a soft drink, and only has a very small ammount of beer, but if you buy it in a pub it's a 50 / 50 mix, but yes, it is real beer. Ginger beer is so called because it is brewed, but it isn't alcoholic like beer. Vimto isn't Blackcurrent, if you want to try Blackcurrent you need Ribena.
I was confused for years by Americans calling fizzy drinks soda I was only familiar with cream soda which apparently are coloured differently in other countries, and soda water which is what gentlemen used as a mixer for whiskey or brandy.
Soda water is carbonated water. Americans have fountain drinks which is carbonated water mixed with drink. Maybe that’s where the name soda came into play. We often call them soft drinks too. Just depends where your from 😊
The bitter shandy is 0.5 percent alcohol and it's classed as a soft drink so kids can order it in pubs / restaurant with there meal I used to take it to school in the 80s for break time and old timers drink it in pubs they call it a bitter dash if they wanted it stronger ie more bitter than lemonade and if the wanted more lemonade than bitter they call it a bitter shandy you can also have a larger shandy made the same way
shandy from a can (especiaaly ben shaws) has a very limited amount of beer in it, if you get it from a pub they put half beer (bitter usually) and half lemonade, on a hot day supper refreshing
Shandy is literally a gateway to beer when i was a kid my grandfather would buy me a shandy at our local social club. You need to remember the legal drinking age in your own home is not 18, it's 5 years old under parental supervision.
Shandy is just clearm fizzy, lemonade, mixed with beer. If you buy a bottle of beer and a bottle of lemonade, you can mix it to suit. They serve shandy in pubs. The barman will put 1/2 pint of beer in a glass and add 1/2 a pint of lemonade. The only difference between pub shandy and canned shandy is the strength. Pub shandy is half and half. Canned shandy is between 3 and 5% beer. You would never get drunk on canned shandy.
Shandy in cans is more or less just a soft drink really as it is that watered down (I think the beer/alcohol content is something like 4%, is it is basically lemonade flavoured with beer). The 'bitter' is the type of beer. In the UK we have different types of beer, you can have bitter, mild, stout, lager, cider and probably some more I can't think of at the moment. Even beer in the same category can taste different, if you don't particularly like beer maybe mild is the best to try as it is more subtle tasting compared to the others Although Shandy is traditionally made with bitter beers you can mix lemonade with some of the other types.
Hey Michelle.Ok.Dandelion & Burdock is a very traditional drink that you don’t see very often in most stores.A lot of people wouldn’t know what it is.& yes Irn-Bru is the most popular soft drink in Scotland.Right let’s move on to shandy. If you go to a Pub in the UK you can ask for a shandy which is mostly lemonade (sprite)topped up with a little bit of beer.In summer it is very refreshing. The can of shandy you bought has hardly any beer in it so it is considered a soda as you guys say...one of my BFF’s is also from Texas but he lives in Denver now which is where we met.Hope your enjoying your stay in the UK.I visit the States often & I always say I like it there because it’s different but at least they speak English!!
Ben Shaw actually do a cloudy lemonade which is great when first being in the fridge before u serve it. U can't taste them all warm. They do not taste good warm. Put them all in the fridge. Then serve. British people don't drink them warm
So irn bru has some ingredient in that is used to flavour medicine in the US. Dandelion and Burdock is very similar in ingredients to root beer. Energy just means calories
A bitter shandy is just a hint of beer for the taste and mainly lemonade thats why its in the soft drinks section and there is no age requirements. But if you got to a pub/bar and ask for a beer shandy it would be half beer for example fosters and half lemonade. As you both old enough to drink alcohol maybe you could do a british alcohol taste test 🙂💜
Shandy is lemonade mixed with lager. You can’t get drunk from it though. It’s a good way to cheat when you with your mates and you don’t want to get shit faced just ask for a larger Shandy at the bar but you’re mates think you’re on the real stuff lol
The Ben and shaws one isn’t that popular and not many people drink it in London but the iron bru, vimto and ginger beer are very common drinks in the uk ps I also live in the uk
With the shandy - there’s so much lemonade in it, rather than beer - I don’t think you can get drunk on it. Well, you’d have to consume a massive quantity to even get tipsy. Even though it’s not strictly a soft drink, it’s not really considered a true alcoholic one either.
@@travelingfamilyoffive Half beer and half Lemonade is a usual shandy mix. You can get a bitter shandy (John Smith's often used in pubs) that is darker or a Lager (Fosters etc) shandy. A pub shandy would be 4 times the strength of that can you had. Popular with drivers as most can have a couple and clear the drink drive limit. We also do a 'Lager Top' where you can order a beer and just the last 10% poured is Lemonade hence giving it a 'Top'. Drivers again sometimes do that to lower the %.
I am British and me and my family never get those sodas and I have never tried them I have only tried ginger beer, we normally in The UK have like sprite and lime and soda and things like that Coke aswell xx
Back in 1962 I was in Australia whilst in the merchat navy The lady behind the counter in a milk bar after hearing my accent asked me if it was true about dandelion and burdock I confirmed the fact and asked why she wanted to know She told me that her husband was English and he told her that he missed it She thought he had made it up for a joke and didn't believe him
no i dont like Iron Brew either the Shandy is like a very mild beer, if i was out one night and was the designated driver i would drink that , ginger nut buscuites are real nice
Shandy... Yes it's made from real beer but it's watered down by the lemonade so much so that it loses it's alcohol integrity making it legal for most ages to drink.
It is a Scottish drink. The Scots love it. Old fashioned English drinks of which there are a few. These drinks go back many years. People still buy them. I still by dandelion and burdock . In my youth I bought sarsaparilla.
Dandelion & burdock is one of my favourites! I’m 26 so no not for old people 😂 and irn bru is also one of my most fav drinks and I have like cans of it in my fridge! Love them.
Irn Bru has had it's recipe altered following the sugar tax, to have less sugar. Original old stock bottles were selling at a premium while stocks lasted. It is very popular with Vodka, similar to Red Bull and Vodka. Shandy premixed in cans is strictly limited to a maximum of 0.5% alcohol, shandy as sold in pubs and bars is mixed by the barstaff and can be much stronger, and is not legal to sell to under 18 year olds. As a young barman in the 1980's I got a right earfull from the landlord when I mistakenly sold a child a shandy that was not from a premix. Ginger beer is one of the best of the fizzy drinks around, very traditional. The "smoke" given off was CO2, released by depressurising the drink. Some versions are alcoholic, but usually not, the best rule of thumb is the price, the tax on alcohol pushes the price up alot.
1871, is the year the company was founded, Shandy in a can is mainly lemonade, and root beer, where do you think the idea came from, just saying. Second video i have watched, and i go past halfway
Looks like all the drinks you tasted you drank at room temperature. Best sampled chilled.
How can ginger beer be misleading when you have root beer in America
Root beer is not spicy, just really sweet.
Iv tried Root beer and it tastes like mouthwash! It’s ok but not the best... absolutely hate ginger beer though!
inr
That is exactly right. Root beer is not a beer, just as misleading as ginger beer!
It always amazes me the reactions of Americans to our food and drink. The weird combinations you have in the States.
Did you know Americans put sugar and cream in tea?
Fucking horrific
You think Irn Bru is an improvement on anything at all? Jeeez it's like drinking paint stripper on bubble gum...
Ha, you'd have to drink about 20 cans of that shandy to feel any effect from the alcohol.
More like 200 cans!
0.1% so 30 cans for the equivalent of a weak beer. Best one is Bass Shandy.
50 top decks would get you not even close to drunk 😁
The insane amount of sugar you’ve added to your “tea” on camera and yet Irn Bru is “super sweet”?!? Alrighty then!

I used to have shady my dad used to mix his beer and some lemonade in a glass for me. I love irn bru.
Also, the beer looks like it made good bloopers at the end with Michelle laughing 😂
The bitter shandy is 0.5 percent alcohol and it's classed as a soft drink so kids can order it in pubs / restaurant with there meal I used to take it to school in the 80s for break time and old timers drink it in pubs they call it a bitter dash if they wanted it stronger ie more bitter than lemonade and if the wanted more lemonade than bitter they call it a bitter shandy you can also have a larger shandy made the same way
Cliff Butler I really like it. I think adding the lemonade helps!
@@travelingfamilyoffive it ads a sweet taste to it it's a refreshing drink
shandy from a can (especiaaly ben shaws) has a very limited amount of beer in it, if you get it from a pub they put half beer (bitter usually) and half lemonade, on a hot day supper refreshing
Pretty good if you're driving instead of having a proper soft drink.
Shandy is literally a gateway to beer when i was a kid my grandfather would buy me a shandy at our local social club. You need to remember the legal drinking age in your own home is not 18, it's 5 years old under parental supervision.
Irn bru is available all over the UK but its only really popular in Scotland.
Ur allowed to burp After drinking all this 😂
Hey Michelle.Ok.Dandelion & Burdock is a very traditional drink that you don’t see very often in most stores.A lot of people wouldn’t know what it is.& yes Irn-Bru is the most popular soft drink in Scotland.Right let’s move on to shandy.
So , here's a question. Did you actually clean the cups between different drinks, or did you use different cups each time?
Ben Shaw actually do a cloudy lemonade which is great when first being in the fridge before u serve it. U can't taste them all warm. They do not taste good warm. Put them all in the fridge. Then serve. British people don't drink them warm
The bitter shandy is not a high alcohol so it would not make you drunk after one can
You dislike Vimto and Old Jamaica ginger beer? I love these drinks, in fact, I sometimes pick the latter as a Winter warmer.
Can you try Lilt? Every American I know has been blown away by it!
So irn bru has some ingredient in that is used to flavour medicine in the US. Dandelion and Burdock is very similar in ingredients to root beer. Energy just means calories
HOW DARE YOO DESS IRN BRU jk I’m kidding but srsly how
A bitter shandy is just a hint of beer for the taste and mainly lemonade thats why its in the soft drinks section and there is no age requirements.
Larger shandy and bitter shandy are two different drinks it's just your favourite drink diluted with lemonade
Could you do a part 2, with tango, fanta, Sprite, coke, dr pepper, these loads more xx
Did you watch my other drink video? We did coke, sprite, Fanta etc 😊
The Ben and shaws one isn’t that popular and not many people drink it in London but the iron bru, vimto and ginger beer are very common drinks in the uk ps I also live in the uk
Dandelion & burdock is more of a northern drink. Ben Shaws is the best one as the Barr D&B tastes artificial.
In Scotland they call pop Ginger .go in a shop ask for a bottle of ginger they say what flavour you then say orange please. Or something like that .
With the shandy - there’s so much lemonade in it, rather than beer - I don’t think you can get drunk on it. Well, you’d have to consume a massive quantity to even get tipsy. Even though it’s not strictly a soft drink, it’s not really considered a true alcoholic one either.
It's 0.5 percent alcohol so it's classed as a soft drink
Cliff Butler
Thanks, I didn’t realise that.
No pleasing some people
Any drink that has an alcohol level of 2% or lower is classed as Non alcoholic.
The lemonade waters down the alcohol level of the beer
Bitter is a type of old English beer. Mix that with 80% lemonade and you have shandy...enjoy angels lol!
It has a little bit of beer in it but not enough to be alcoholic it's mainly lemonade x
Ginger beer is fizzy pop not actual alcohol 😂
Traditionally yes, as they used fermentation to carbonate all soft drinks, but it was about 0.5%
Shandy is literally just larger and lemonade mixed and the ones you normally get in a can are about 0.5% alcohol
Shandy is lager/beer with lemonade.
The smoke is the gas they used to carbonate the drink.
Dandelion and Burdock. I grew up drinking that as a kid :-)
U don’t dilute Vimto 🤣oh my goodness it’s like a fruity fizzy drink BAHa xx
Maybe thinking of Ribena.
There's a Vimto flavoured squash these days, maybe that's what they're talking about.
I'm sorry to tell you that the irn bru company had to reduce the sugar in the soda due to the sugar tax in the UK. It tasted wayyy better before
A shandy you can make at home like most people you get a little bit of beer and add lemonade
Jeff The Unicorn 9 never thought of adding lemonade to beer. It’s much better that way!
And I have tried vimto🍇
Hi. Yes we tried the traditional drinks in another video 😊
Bitter shandy is actually a soft drink for kids as it has the most littlest amount of alcohol in x❤️
Shandy... Yes it's made from real beer but it's watered down by the lemonade so much so that it loses it's alcohol integrity making it legal for most ages to drink.
If tou dont like lager ask for a lager top ir a lager & lime. More alcohol than a shandy but enough to sweeten the taste .
Love them.
i would always get a shandy before school lol
Is it normal that im british but dont know most of those drinks??!
No. Unless you are ten years old and/or come from a first generation immigrant family. They have all been around for more than a century.
Children over 5 years old are allowed to drink alcohol in the home.
Dandelion and Burdock is my favourite. Ps I'm 19
1871, is the year the company was founded, Shandy in a can is mainly lemonade, and root beer, where do you think the idea came from, just saying. Second video i have watched, and i go past halfway
Bitter Shandy is a small amount of beer topped up with a load of lemonade.
The can of shandy is non alcoholic, the pub stuff is.
Ginger Beer is amazing. The brand Old Jamaican is the best by a longshot.... Like MARMITE you either love it or hate it
Ginger beer is great, real ginger taste and you need to drink from the fridge for all those drinks.
