  • Morote Gari (双手刈) is a Judo and Jujitsu throwing technique that originates from Japan. It is classified as a "two-handed reap" technique in English. "Morote" means "two hands" in Japanese, and "gari" means "reap" or "cut down."
    Technique Description:
Morote Gari involves using both of your hands to seize and control your opponent's arms, and then using your legs to sweep their legs out from under them, causing them to fall to the ground. It's a classic example of a sweeping throw where you take advantage of your opponent's imbalance to execute the technique.
    Execution:
Grip: You start by gripping your opponent's sleeves with both hands, one hand on each sleeve. Your grips should be strong and controlled, allowing you to manipulate your opponent's balance.
Off-balancing: Once you have a secure grip, you need to disrupt your opponent's balance. You can do this by pulling their arms forward and downward, making them lean slightly in your direction.
Leg Sweep: As your opponent's balance is compromised, you swiftly step in with your leg, positioning it behind their legs. The idea is to block or hook behind their ankle or calf with your leg, while at the same time using your hands to continue pulling their upper body downward.
Sweeping Motion: With your leg in position, you apply pressure on their legs while maintaining the forward and downward pull with your hands. This combination of actions creates a powerful sweeping motion, making it difficult for your opponent to maintain their stance.
Completion: As a result of the sweeping action and the disruption of their balance, your opponent should fall to the ground. You can guide them to the mat to ensure a controlled fall and prevent injury.
    Tips:
Timing: The key to a successful Morote Gari is timing. You need to execute the leg sweep just as your opponent's balance is compromised, increasing the effectiveness of the technique.
Control: Maintain control of your opponent's upper body throughout the technique. This control helps you dictate the direction and speed of their fall.
Footwork: Proper foot placement and coordination are essential. Your stepping foot should be placed behind your opponent's legs, and your sweeping motion should be fluid and precise.
Practice: Like any martial arts technique, Morote Gari requires practice to master. Training with a partner and under the guidance of an experienced instructor is important for learning the correct form and minimizing the risk of injury.
It's important to note that while Morote Gari can be highly effective, it's also crucial to apply the technique safely and responsibly, especially in training environments.
