  • I'm going to build this 2x4 Basics Shed as fast as I possibly can. Is the quality any good on these EZ Sheds? Let's put it all to the timelapse test here on our duck and goose farm. I'm ultimately going to use this building as a brooder for my ducks and geese.

My grandpa had a cow farm. He retired recently and he has been going on lots of vacations with my grandma because you cant really take a vacation when you need to take care of big cows. He tells me to finish my milk because he understands that a farmer's life isn't always an easy one but it's a necessary job and we'd all have a much harder life without them. Support your local farmers because they work from sunrise to sunset... I'm happy my grandpa is seeing more of the world and going on cruises because he deserves it for working since he was a kid... now he helps my grandma with her pottery business that is doing very well considering the whole pandemic thing... the wonders of online shopping!!!

Acow farm you say .lol Interesting concept . I wonder at what size a cow farm becomes a cattle ranch or are there size requirements ? Lets say can a miniature cow farm ever become a cattle ranch. I guess what I am wondering is when does a farm qualify to being a ranch . Or do farms do a certain trade and a ranch does different things and one will never become the other . So many questions

I can't speak to the 2x4 Basics shed kit like you have here, but I can talk about their workbench kit. I used it for a workbench build a few years back and it was fantastic. I put together a level, bench with very few cuts that's strong, sturdy, and doesn't wobble in an afternoon. Still have it, no complaints at all. Can't speak more highly of the product.

Morgan, I think you have done very well with the shed frame. As a teenager I spent many an hour constructing flat pack furniture for customers who bought from the shop I worked in. I've done a few and your end product looks fine to me. It will be strong once sheeted out. Instructions... Veh! Good to see the pond holding water. You can see how much the fowl appreciate it. Regards to Allison. Hope work is not too stressful. Regards Stephen.

Great job! I've built a couple of these sheds and definitely helps to have 2 people. A tip for anyone else wanting to build these...to get the 2x4s to easily fit in those front and back truss brackets is to slip a scrap 2x4 in the brackets before you screw the legs and arch studs in. That way they hold their shape to accept the truss 2x4s.

Definitely a good idea to build in a run for their "teenage" weeks. Our girls were starting to forage at around 2 weeks old (helped me reduce their protein intake too, and no angel wing). Also - they can go into shallow water before 4 weeks! If you have the time to supervise them and it's a warm sunny day, letting them have a little pool time with some platforms for resting will encourage them to swim and then you won't have a bunch of 4 week old ducks acting terrified of a kiddy pool 😂

I built a 12x16 shed by myself. Took me 3 months to build and over the year's I have learned "that any thing worth building is worth the time to do it" I took the time to do "birds mouth" and angles. I didn't turn out perfect like what I see contractors do. But the more layers you put on the stronger It gets. Angels didn't match up but when I finished it was so strong. I also have learned that following the steps in the order of those companies frustrates me . I was going to buy the wood kit from HD then decided against it and I never been Happier! Your video are great love you farm!

That is a fantastic video! You explained very well how those hing kits work. I have built a couple of sheds without them just using 2X4's , 1/2 inch OSB boards big nails and a base built on 4X4s and OSB board and more 2X4s but your approach looks a lot easier. One thing I learned was that building a shed was not as easy as one might think and every time you build one you learn a lot more! So thanks!!

I'm at 2:14 into the video and I can tell it's going to take me at the very least 10X as long to do this as it did you. I've never made one of these and I'm 70 and slightly handicapped. I have no idea how to do that floor/platform and I also noticed some measuring tools that I simply don't have. I've done a lot of vehicle maintenance and also electronics over my lifetime so I know not to cut my hand off or drill into a finger etc. Not to wear long sleeves and jewelry while working with power tools and electricity but I'm not familiar with carpentry and the last time I built any furniture was about 1966 in the 9th grade woodshop class. I still have my term project, a nice Bookcase that I gave to my dad for his birthday and got it back when he passed away a few years ago. So this is going to be an adventure in building.
Edit: At 2:35 I nearly burst out in laughter. If you think your land is difficult do to being rocky and uneven I should send you a picture of where my wife wants our (her) shed to be. Our house in Northwest Arizona sits on a leveled out place on the side of a rocky knoll that comes up out of the level ground the house is on, maybe 15' back from the house and continues to about 130 feet behind the house where the top of the knoll is a few feet higher than the top of our house or a rise of about 35 to 40 feet. To put up a long wire antenna for one of my radios, I'm a licensed amateur radio operator, I found a crevice at the top of the knoll and stuck one end of the mast in and piled loose rocks in around it. Nice and stable up to at least 50 mph winds.

I realize it will be much quicker to put up my own walls and then I plan on buying the Simpson Strong hardware for the trusses and birds mouths so I don't have to make the weird angle cuts. One thing I would do different if I were you will be to use pressure treated plywood flooring, not sure if you have termites in your area but if you do I fear they will start eating the floor from the bottom up.

Certainly, if anybody on our crew would've attempted to build a shed the way that one was designed to assemble - the individual concerned would've been looking for a new job before morning coffee break. But you somehow pulled the rabbit out of the magical hat and got it done - kudos to you, my good man.
(I need a stiff drink after just watching this...)

🤣🤣🤣 I had such a good laugh watching this video, because I also got one of these kits for the same reason and the metal pieces were a joke to work with. I was planning to make a smaller version as a live on house for the goose I’m getting. My husband jumped in to help me and between the TWO OF US..... we could not get the metal to fit the wood. After two days of fighting with the metal pieces, we threw the whole box away and went back to the old fashioned way and finished the project. We are not carpenters, we are cityiots trying to be farmers....let me tell you...... YOU NEVER WANT US TO BUILD YOUR HOUSE!!!!!!😳😳😳🤣🤣🤣🤣 the end results .... hilarious.

I think you could increase stability by screwing a scrap 2X4 into the floor on each side if the wall studs, then screw the wall studs into the scrap 2X4.

I guess I have a couple of comments that people may not or may like. So, here it goes. You get what you pay for. You knew it was a cheap version when you bought it, so you did your homework before purchasing the kit.
It looks really simple to build and for what you're using it for is good for you. but I could never have a shed like that on my property. I've built my own sheds. My shed at the house is called the hurricane hut by my neighbors. They are in the construction business and told me the shed is built better than the houses we live in. And if a hurricane came through could they use it.
So, I want things that are sturdy and will last. You have no sill plate. You have those little metal plates to hold it together.
You do have a decent foundation with the blocks. I like that. I put mine on crushed stone and built the base of the shed from there. I'm not overly happy with that set up. I'll have to empty my shed, jack it up and put blocks underneath. Why? Because as it's settling into the crushed stone, water is seeping into the floors. My shed is heavy and the ground is soft. Bad combination.
But like I said if it serves its purpose than good for you and your fowl.
I'm enjoying your channel because I know little about farming and want to learn as much as I can

That's going to be a very nice house for your breeding of duck & geese and maybe some more chickens. Thank you Toby....didn't mean to leave you out of this build. I'm sure you let Morgan know when he needed to square things up a bit.

Your aside about wanting to stay flexible for now is great advice for people interested in farming in general. You should avoid any level of strict rigidity. That flexibility may cause you some minor issues in the future, but it will also allow you to easily maneuver if a problem arises so it kinda cancels out. Being able to just appreciate what you have and tinker is an excellent way to live.

The reason many manufacturers prefer pictoral instructions to writing it out is that if it were written out, it would have to be accurately translated and proofread in 7+ languages. Thank you for this video - it was valuable for me as I'm also considering a kit vs. no kit. :)
