- Great songs don't always need words. "The Great Gig in the Sky" from Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon" (1973), by Richard Wright and Clare Torry, played on theremin, an early electronic instrument controlled without contact.

really - can, the theremin is capable for this and I saw/heared this at a concert. But I suspect it depends more on the musician.

Yeah, the control is insane. People complain about Good Vibrations being hard to repeatedly play on a theremin. This is much more complex.

That was an incredible cover of one of my favorite songs from the Dark Side of the Moon album. I love theremins, but don't have the muscle control needed to do more than make weird sci-fi noises on one. I don't even want to think how many years of practicing it took to be able to play one like that.

I clicked on this, anticipating that immediately afterwards I'd feel a need to listen to the original. Then I heard how good this sounded, and that need subsided. By the time it was over, I was wishing it had been an extended version. Bravo!
I loved the use of the theremin also in the old black and white science fiction movies such as the Day the Earth stood still and the FORBIDDEN PLANET and Midsummer Murders.

Just ordered my theremin yesterday, and I can't wait for it to arrive. I'm hoping to be able to play this well at some point in my life! Great performance of an excellent song.

Update for those asking, I still have the theremin, but it's one of those hobbies that I got really into before I switched on to the next thing. I wouldn't suggest it as a beginner instrument. It's basically like a fretless guitar but three dimensional on top of it rather than a two dimensional fretboard. Very difficult to hit the notes on-key, and I never got good at it, though that being said, I also didn't invest much time nor effort into it either.
Just wonderful. I love how the hands also express the grief of the song. Brilliant. I want a theremin.

The Teremin is a very difficult instrument to play. It has been improved a lot in recent years, but as a simple listener, I must say that it always gives me a sense of incompleteness, of limitation. This piece by Pink Floyd seems written for it. But at the same time it lays bare its expressive limits, since, albeit at the height of technical ability, it imitates, but does not add or reach the depth and underlining of the human voice. Indeed, it is precisely in wanting to resemble the human voice that exalts its limits.

Holy shit. That was amazing. Proves that a theramin is a real instrument. Dsotm is my favorite album of all time and ggits is one of its best songs. I've heard it countless times and the slide portion was almost perfect. Claire torrys part was only less due to the limitations of the instrument, not the player. Fanfuckingtastic.
