i live in palestine, and we love this tree so much, every family has a land full of olive trees, and we really just go visit them once a year to pick them and juice them for olive oil, and pickled olives, its really a remarkable tree with beautiful hard wood, and it doesnt even need much attention here, you dont even have to water it, and the olive oil that it produces... omg, mamamiaaa

My Olive trees have about 8-10 Olives on them. How can I make them edible? I know, it's not much of a crop, BUT, I would like to eat them. If I leave them on the tree, will they ripen, and then we can eat them? Or do they ripen off the trees.

@@juliegogola4647 in my opinion the best way to eat is pickled. It's so tasty. First you pick the olives, then you make a cut across the half of the olive or you hammer it (the traditional way) you give each olive a hit with something hard, then you put it in a container and spray on it salt, leave it for about 2-3 day, then, if you put it in a jar, put on it lemon juice (about half a cup)+ the outer layer or the lemons you squeezed for juice+ some venigar+ half a spoon of sugar + more salt + cut some spicy pepper in half and put it in the jar + fill the jar up to the prim with water.
Close the jar and keep it in a room for about 2 weeks or more.
It sometimes gets ready after 2 weeks but I recommend leaving it for more.
You can put it in a fridge after it's ready.

@@J.Osman2003 Thanks for the info/recipe. Now, this is for Olives that are ripe/dark, right? I do NOT like them green. It sounds like they might be growing bacteria over the 2 weeks, BUT, I guess you know what you are telling me from doing it yourself. I will be substituting a regular pepper for the hot/spicy ones too.
I can't do spicy, I used to be able to, but, not now.
Thanks again for taking the time to give me your help. Right now I only have a small amount of Olives, but, I am sure my trees will get bigger and more productive as they get bigger. They have to be potted because of my climate, but, they should do good in pots.

My olive tree sits in a cactus and succulent mix to which I add some mineral mix (pumice, lava, zeolith) for better drainage; and I also add worm castings to enrich the soil with nutrients.
Here in Berlin, Germany I overwinter my olive tree in a polytunnel on the balcony which faces southwest. My olive tree can take temps down to -6°C. But it wants to be protected from winter rains and root rot.
I always recommend organic gardening, meaning that you do not buy the cheapest fertilizer available, but give the plant an organic fertilizer. I also recommend using peatfree potting soils; and I tend to go easy on fertilizing slow growers like the olive tree. While I feed oleanders frquently, in my experience the olive tree requires far less fertilizer - at longer intervals. But that goes for my olive tree; it may be a different story for yours.

Re temperatures it really depends also on the type of Olive Tree, some can stand longer periods of cold others less so. In northern italy they have some types which can take quite a beating regarding cold, they even manage to grow olives with those trees as far north as Austria in the pannonian bason, where it can become quite cold in winter!

Actually there are olive tree varieties that can take low temperatures as much as -15C. The problem is the combination of cold and rain, also believe it or not years with a mild winter results to not good fruit production. You can try it in a place with good drainage and it will get more cold hardy by the years. Giorgos from Greece.

Do you think that I could buy the cold hardy variety and have success with it in Poland? We get yearly amplitude of -20°C to 35°C. I have access to a greenhouse in which I could overwinter it. It's basic and made of plastic (we use it for growing tomatoes) but I think it could work with thick coat of dry straw or smthng.

I placed a small olive plant (the leaf ball about 14 inches in diameter) outside, earthen pot on the ground. It was outside to get lots of sunlight. But in the late spring something(s) started eating all the new leaves. By the time I noticed the extent of this I was in shock. My lovely little "tree" was being eaten alive. Now I have it inside my house in a west-facing window, so it gets direct sunlight for 4 or 5 hours in the afternoon. New leaves are sprouting everywhere and I feel that a miracle has happened. I can see it loves its new location and I have given it the attention it needed. I will be checking it every day now for proper soil moisture and adequate feeding. The perfect indoor pet.

Thank you as that was very helpful. I transplanted two 7-8 foot trees for someone and minimized the time of transplant, and currently, one of the trees lost all of its leaves and the other has its leave wilting. I will add some organic compost to it and nutrients and water it just a little bit as with the nutrients and then prune it somewhat. The person said they watered it a lot and I think that is why it lost its leaves. Thank you for your posting.

I live in the most southern part of Greece and Europe. So what i suggest you is too never water your olive tree, It will be ok with rain water in the north. Here even with middle average 32 degrees in the daytime for 3 motnhs in the summer you dont really need to water if rained good in the winter , the plants will not get dry if you dont water them in the summer if they are already have good root system established ( 4-5 years old) you need to water sometimes if the temperature is above 38 degrees for a couple of days. Also you need the chill hours in the winter ( under 7 degrees to -7 ) the tree feels nice. If your temperature is below that, I suggest you to give it some seaweed so it can feel the same good even in (-12) without any injuries(apply before winter). If you can grow blueberries in your native soil then you need to add Calcium( its impossible to grow healthy blueberries and healthy olive trees in the same area) so add tha calcium so the ph of the soil will increase minimum to 6-7. And keep pruning any suckers coming from the base of the plant. Olive tree can be big like a pine tree( not so tall). The size of container you use, is for decorative olive trees.

hello, my olive tree which I have bought last year in spring and put it inside this winter, all of its leaves became dry. A couple days ago i had to cut the dried branches off and though i had killed it but there is one branch that kept growing. But other than that branch and the main branch it looks quite bad and dry. My question is how can I make the one small branch that keeps growing become thicker? And how can I bring the plant to grow other than that only branch, so it becomes full again? As soon as it gets warmer outside I´m planning on slowly putting the tree outside again.
Do you have any advise for me?

I am here again, and I want to know what I should do in the way of potting soil when I repot my 2 potted Olive trees ? I am in the USA, and as for MY greenhouse temperatures, I keep my GH at LEAST 40 F, or
5 degrees C. I know that with potted plants, most or all need to stay above 32F or 0 C. OR above freezing. Those same plants can take a bit colder (maybe) if they are planted in the ground.
Anyways, I was wondering what types of nutrients an OLive tree potted would need to be in their soil in the pots they would be transplanted into? Okay, thanks!!

Yeah, I've heard that if the Olive tree is kept too warm all winter, it will NOT produce fruits (OLives) the bearing season. It needs a certain amount of time at about 40F-45F or 5C - 7C, in other words a bit of "chill time", but, not really COLD. I have kept mine TOO warm I think this past winter.
I will just have to see how my 2 potted Olives react as far as making fruit.
I do hope that I get some Olives, BUT, I really have NO IDEA how to make any Olives edible. Like as in how to make up a juice to soak them in to "pickle" them and make them good to eat.
BTW, what should I adds to the potted Olive plants as fertilizer? Bone meal?
I have bought some "Pumice stone", BUT, I am saving that (expensive) for my tomato plants.

In mediterranean climate is usually the other way around, the tree as full access to water during rainny winter and stays months sometimes half a year and wildfires without a single drop of rain. Is it ground water ? what happen in the pot that changes the care so much??

    Salted Olives Recipe:
The disgusting bitter but also the preservation of the olives over time are the most important thing: So we collect the olives from the plant, wash them with clean water, then to be able to eat them, it is necessary to remove the bitterness and here there are three possibilities, that very fast chemical , with caustic soda (I do not recommend), it takes very little time, about 6/7 hours, instead biologically and with more patience, the now centennial method, less fast and more laborious, that of crushing each fruit by pressing hard on each Olive, with a glass with a flat bottom or a meat squeezer, in this way (better the green olive) the fresh fruit during the pressure is frozen and splitting its pulp, in this way it facilitates the infiltration of water inside and the release of the bitterness is speeded up (about a week) or if you have more time and a lot of patience, and want to have intact Olives, each pierced with a pin or a toothpick, (three or four holes) and immerse them in water a, (the time required about 15/20 days) now let's move on to the action: After harvesting the Olives to bring and taste at the table, wash them and place them in a container that can be closed, let's make an example with specific quantities: 1Kg of Green or not overly ripe Olives (black / purple color) or with the method of crushing or piercing them it does not matter, put all the harvest in a glass or plastic food container, and close it with a cap (important, keeping everything in one place cool and dry, preferably in the dark) and completely immersing the olives, in clean water, the water should be changed twice a day, morning and evening before going to bed, then depending on the technique, crushing (a few days) or For two weeks, taste a sample Olive, if the slight bitterness is still present, continue or if you like it, move on to the phases of the so-called Brine (addition of conservative salt. Salting for 1 Kg of Olives: first phase: on 1 liter of water and 100 grams of sea salt, keep the Olives immersed in salted water for 1 month. second phase: dissolved in 1 liter of water and 120 grams of sea salt, waiting another month. Third definitive phase light and conservative brine: 1 liter of water and 60 grams of salt, leave them like this for at least two months and then bring them to the table, but be careful, remove only the quantity to be consumed, the rest must remain immersed in the mixture of water and salt. Proceed in this way, in all three phases illustrated, put the water, quantity 1 liter, in a pot and add the salt, boil and when the salt has dissolved remove from the heat and put the pot with the mixture to cool completely, and put everything in a glass container where you put the Kg of Olives, at this point wait for the times mentioned above, and move on to the second phase with the varied quantities and then to the third phase, have fun and good appetite.

I've around 40 CM tall Olive tree, which has already pretty long branches, but as far as I've never used pruning I guess I've been doing it all wrong. So my question is can I prune it now in March? (it's pretty warm in here already) And the plant has already a lot of flowers?! (or maybe it's called tiny olives)
My second question is to double check the watering part.. I've read that the soil should get dry from water to watering.. and the plant doesn't really like water too much. But from this video if I got correctly, it's better to keep the soil moist during warm seasons, right?

Continue to cut always these suckers.. Just keep the main trunk in about 50 cm from the gound and above this keep 3-4 main branches. Just put some copper after cutings if you have wet period.

What soil PH does the Olive prefer? I will be growing 2 small Olive trees in my greenhouse since I am in a zone 6a and the trees will need a zone 8a for winter survival. I have them coming tomorrow according to Ebay.

Because Mediterranean soil is very rich and because of that you need good soil.
In Portugal (Alentejo) one plant of that size (it's very small) can give you 4 kg of olives. In Sweden if he have some luck maybe a couple of olives. I dont understand why he have a Olive tree in a extreme cold weather. I know the olive tree is a beautiful tree and can be pruned like a bonsai (and if you do it right you can slow their grow to be a small tree for more than 100 years and only the tree trunk thickens. You can have them like a small bonsai at the entrance of your house.
A olive tree in Alentejo with 1500 years old:
      thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/old-olive-tree-blue-sky-flowery-landscape-alentejo-portugal-137597991.jpg
And the oldest tree in Portugal is a olive tree with 2850 years old in Santa Iria da Azoia (Close of Lisbon).

He forget to tell the tree have a high risk of dead if the temperature drop to less than -10ºC (15ºF). And no olives in a year if the temperature drop to less than -6ºC (~22ºF) for more than 12 hours.

It is now in a pot 15 cm in diameter, the tree is about a meter and a half high. Thank you :)

I have 2 potted Olive trees that are now in my greenhouse for the winter. I got some darkened Olives from them, and tried to eat them, and it was HORRIBLE!!!
SO can anybody let me know how I can get some good tasting Olives? I mean, do I have to let them "age?" I've asked this same question here before, and NOBODY replied. So can ANYBODY help?
IF I get NO reply, I guess I will just let the Olives age after they are brown on the tree. I had picked BROWN ones, but they must not be quite "ripe", or SOMETHING.

Hi, I have an olive tree in a 45cm pot, the tree is about 1.5-1.8m tall. This is the final height of tree and size of pot I want, although I would like the trunk thicker. At some point the roots are going to fill the pot. As I dont want to go Taller will I have to knock the plant out of the pot and trim the roots back Bonsai style and then put it back in the same pot with fresh compost?? Any help you could give would be appreciated as I dont want to make the wrong move. Many thanks.

Rubbish they love being in the ground if it’s well drained. They love the cold. In the med it gets to below freezing. Olives can take minus 10 degrees as long as they get warmth in the day. I have two large ones in my garden in uk and they thrive. You need to take out the centres so light penetrates. For example vase shap ! Where is he getting his info ?
