    This topic has been requested by you guys and it is something I wanted to do for a while. I am going to talk about the most important tool when it comes to wine: wine glasses AND I am going to do a blind tasting to find out which glass is the best! First of all HELLO to all of the new faces. The world of wine is filled with glass but this was not always the case. The first evidence of wine production is nine thousand years old but wine glasses only started to become popular a few hundred years ago. Drinking glasses are made from Silica - the main constituent of sand. Remember the fact that wine glasses and wine bottles are made from the main compound of several minerals when someone talks about the minerality of a wine … but that’s a different story. Before the introduction of industrial glass making wine was consumed from a variety of vessels like this Cow Horn for example or silver cups. The English Businessman George Ravenscroft was the first to produce clear crystal glassware on an industrial scale. Those first glasses were produced from lead crystal. Due to health concerns lead crystal is rarely used today and the lead is substituted by barium oxide, zinc oxide, or potassium oxide.
    Plastic Cup - 0,01 Euro
    WMF Burgundy Glass - 8,00 Euro
    Riedel Performance Pinot Noir Glass - 23 Euros
    Riedel Wings Pinot Noir/Nebbiolo Glass - 25 Euros
    Sophienwald PHOENIX Bourgogne Wine Glass - 35,40 Euro
    Zalto Denk Art Burgundy - 40 Euros
    Zieher INTENSE - 53 Euros

    I absolutely love the Reidel Pinot Noir glass. I was lucky to participate in a differential tasting with
    Maximilian Reidel and was amazed at what an effect the structure of a glass had on the wines we tasted.

    I've noticed the big bowl burgundy glasses like the Zalto or Riedel Somm burg glasses do well with more complex and intense wines. When drinking Bourgogne or village level, the wine tends to disappear in the big bowl but it really makes the 1er and GC wines show more distinct separation between the notes.
    Love the Riedel performance series too. The tulip top does really make a difference to how you taste the wine. Thanks for the comparison!

    Fantastic show, again and thank you for making a session on glasses . Like you said, it is not about the price very much but how it brings the best of the taste. Anyway my story is that I have tried many glasses and stay away from the small ones which is just a waste. I got two large glasses (thankfully it looks very similar to your Bordeaux glass) and I have used them for about a year very happily. Thank you again for this video and please do not stop the sessions on good old grape varieties

    What I find quite surprising about wine glasses is how well you get used to drink from a certain glass. My wine glass collection embraces only wine glasses from Zalto which are extremely thin walled and filigree I would say. If I now drink wine from thicker walled glasses I’m usually get quite irritated at first and need some time/sips of wine before I get used to the other glass again. Nice video!

  • @kjh6225

    Very interesting video, it's amazing the difference the shape of the glass can make to aromas. I never thought to use a champagne glass for anyday wine drinking, I may buy a couple now. I use the Riedel Extreme Riesling as my anyday wine glass, as recommended by The Wine Society in the UK.

  • @callmeacab

    I LOVE this. What a smart way to compare? I don't have any fine glasses due to budget. I tend to just go with small glasses for white, large glasses for red. And frankly the very thin expensive ones stress me out. I have too much anxiety about inevitably breaking them. Fantastic video.

    Only recently discovered this video. I’ve done a few ‘glass tastings’ myself over the past years and have a few favourites now: The Riedel Performance Syrah is the most universal glass for me, I love the Zalto Bordeaux for my favourite reds like Brunello and Brunello. Although I prefer the Riedel Performance Pinot for more mature Barolo and Brunello, and most classic Pinot.
    The best budget wine glass for me is an old series of IKEA that retailed for around €5 about 10 years ago. It is a red wine glass that looks similar in shape to the Zalto Bordeaux but has significantly thicker glass.
    I’ve bought a lot of them and we still use them when we have tastings with a larger group.

Gabriel gold is a great overall performer, never ceases to amaze, also Riedel Extreme Burg, but totally blown away by Riedel Performance Pinot, excellent for nose, mouthfeel & elegant, well priced... my favourite by far! Forgive my ignorance about wine glasses-I'm still learning. I purchased a set of Riedel Pinot Noir Performance glasses today and I am so pleased to hear your review. I bought them because I personally prefer Pinot Noir and light red wines, but a lot of my friends prefer shiraz. Very interesting how the glass impact the not only the experience but also the smell and taste of the wine. I discover that once on home brew party. After the beer I tasted wine in one 450ml. tulip glass and it was very intense. The wine was merlot/mavrud blend. My favourite everyday glas is an old crystal glass pretty much universal with sharp edge very pleasant for the lips. One disadvantage is that it can be cleand by hand otherwise there are scratches when clean automatically.

    Riedel Winewings is my favourite one for most red wines, even Bordeaux)

    Please tell me the volume for each one of those for the reference? Now, since unvaxed people are discriminated against and entering a store where wine glasses are sold is not an option, buying one online is rather difficult as the volumes like 54cl or 72cl don't explain much, when they are all photographed on a white background with no option to evaluate relative size...

      @@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Looking forward to what you think. In my experience, blows Zalto by a distant mile. It's light and thin but it doesn't break as easy as others. Bordeaux, Pinots, Whites, Rose, it highly versatile.

    I had many glasses in the past, but Riedel Superleggero is by far the best. Especially the burgundy glass. Try it, you see the difference

    It is a matter of personal taste which glass you use for which category (sparkling wine, white wine, red wine). In my opinion, you should always use the same glass for each category to make the tastings comparable.

    Konstantin, I discovered your channel a few days ago and am enjoying your videos immensely. One reason among many is to get a direct impression about the wonderfully diverse wine culture in Germany. I live near Oregon and Washington wine country now and spent a year in Argentina's wine country (Cuyo Region).

      @@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine I hate having to pick favorites. I'm a "variety is the spice of life" kind of guy. If we're talking about where I like to live, I had a wonderful time in Cuyo, but I love the lush green of the Pacific Northwest, and if the mountains aren't as big, the volcanic landscape is more explorable.

    I have been enjoying the Gabriel Glas Austrian Crystal Wine "StandArt" Edition. At less than half the price as their Gold Edition, I find them affordable and suitable for most wine styles and varietals.

    For years Riedel Chianti were my preferred option but now I buy supermarket similars as they are infinitely better than anything last century, nice thin glass lips and you don’t need to hold a funeral at the bank when you break one.

    Considering skipping WSET 2 and just studying for WSET 3. Do you know if this is a bad idea? What route did you take to becoming a master of wine?

    • @Ildskalli
      @Ildskalli 2 года назад

      I’m not a Master of Wine or anything, but I’m doing the WSET level 2 course right now, and can definitely recommend it. Unless you’re deep in the industry and have truly above-average knowledge, you're pretty much certain to learn a lot of useful things in it.
      And then, it’s a prerequisite for level 3, so there’s that too 🤷‍♂️

    • @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
      @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine  2 года назад

      I have done WSET 2 and 3 and even though 2 was not very challenging for me I still thought that I learned something on the course. If you can skip and feel like you know most of the material then go ahead and start with 3.

      Thanks for the quick reply! Do you hand wash them or dishwasher? The salesman told me to specifically not hand wash them. But on Google everywhere is advertised to hand wash preferably.😅
