So happy to see Fernando performing this way he has this type of potential to CARRY a team and he’s doing that rn with the padres. The energy, the flair, he’s owning the batters box right now.
Padres fan here. I would not be upset moving Merrill to the 3 spot, but at this point in the season I'm not sure I would change a lineup that has been consistent the whole second half of the year. Profar hasn't done anything in these 5 playoff games to make me doubt his ability to produce at the 3 spot. It would make it much easier for the dodgers to throw a lefty against the top of our order and I believe Merrill will still have ample amounts of opportunity to use his clutch ability in the 5 spot.
profar hasn't been good really since the ASB. His OPS has dropped over 100 points. Merrill has easily been the better player since the ASB and should've been in the 3 spot before now. People are just thinking about what Profar was earlier in the season and he hasn't been that for a while now. Same thing happened with Cronenworth, took Shildt way too long to take him out of the 3 spot when it was obvious he couldn't handle it. Put your best players together (Tatis, Merrill, Machado). I will say best thing about Profar is that he can draw walks, but his slugging has evaporated.
You're thinking on Merrill is definitely valid, however I think he works really well as a spark for the bottom of the order as well as a table setter. As good as he is I think you'll run into trouble if you just start shoving all your lower average hitters to the bottom of the order. The way they have it is really well rounded to where it's hard to find a spot to "go after". Maybe 6, 7, 8 but even then Peralta is stepping up, maybe croney gets hot, and as much as I hate it sometimes, bogey will put the ball in play. Also moving Profar down might destroy his confidence. As professional as these guys are, there's no escaping the feeling that your manager believes in someone else more than you when you get moved down in the lineup, and with profar struggling the way he is, that's not something I think they should do to him, at least not now
Merrill at 3 is wild. It's not that he's not good enough but Arraez, Tatis and Merrill is a weird trio to have. Leaves very little in the tail end (not that Bogaerts & the rest can't hit but it'll possible expose the tail)
It's not about lengthening the lineup. You put your best players highest in the lineup so that they can get more at-bats, and Merrill is one of the Padres best. If you can get Merrill an extra AB then that's a good thing. Dodgers aren't going to put Freddie Freeman 5th to have more length in the lineup
How many more at bats is he gonna get at 3 than 4/5? I hear you, conventional baseball thinking sides with you but I'd rather keep some juice down the order as well since Arraez and Tatis do get K'ed a lot. Having profar there at 3 gives some balance
If Cease is out early they got guys they can pop in. Perez with the intent to go for 5 innings. You might see Scott come at ANY point of need. Scenario: Cease has 2 runs, bases loaded, no outs, in the first inning. Scott comes in and ends it. Next inning it's Perez.
You're right about Merrill. This is 100% a Shildt thing. I love Shildt, but he has a strong allegiance to the vets, even to a fault. He took way too long to move Xander and Cronenworth down the lineup when it was obvious that they were scuffling. Profar isn't scuffling to that same extent, but he's clearly not the same Profar as before the ASB, looks more like the Profar of 2022. Merrill should been moved to the 3 spot a couple of months ago, the dude is going to get down-ballot league MVP votes. But I don't see it happening until next year, has nothing to do with on-field, Shildt just sticks by his vets to a fault and there's a lot of evidence of that.
(Padres line up change) It could work... But Profar will walk it off if you walk Tatis to get to him. We are exspecting "All Star" Profar to show up. Just as we hope to see a ball hit into the Crone Zone. It might be Bogarts leading the way. I'm ok if they change it. I'm ok if Merrill is backing Manny.
Machado can create his own base path, which he did. The umps didn't notice what was gong on because the second base ump was looking at second base for a play, the first base ump looking at first base for a play so nobody was looking at Machado. But even if the umps notice, its their interpretation of the rules. That play is not reviewable. It's entering a grey area and I doubt the umps would rule against the padres. It's going to be Cease for the next game.
Did u guys see that the padres blocked rodenrhal in the dugout makes a lot of sense given thier history with Ken slandering the org time and time again .
Peter. I think you are off your rocker on the profar is an easy out take. Excluding player's whose name rhymes with bohei bohtani Jurickson Profar had the best on base percentage of any qualified national league hitters.
Phillies are the Braves from the last 2 years, lose game 1, win a gritty tough game 2, leave your starter in too long, offense no shows and lose game 3.
Response to your question to Padres fans. I think I want the lineup.. Merrill Tatis Manny Profar Arreaz Bogearts Solano/Peralta Cronenworth Higgy Kind of tired of Arreaz leading off as well. I know he's great when he's hot... But his chasing frustrates me in front of Tatis. Just get the fuck on base, and don't chase junk. Merrill has really cut down on the chase, and I feel with Tatis behind him, pitchers will have to challenge him.
@@sirbobdesign he doesn't walk.. I care about OBP in my leadoff if Tatis is up next. There's zero difference between a single and a walk if no runners are on. There's a high probability one of Manny/Profar/Tatis/Merrill gets on. Now Arreaz slapping a single is a lot more dangerous. Arreaz gets on "okay"... Could be a lot better if he didn't chase so much. I wouldve said the same for Merrill but I think he's become a ton more patient at the plate the last month or 2.
If its noticeable that they are walking tatis to get to profar, Jurickson is going to go super saiyan and eclipse even Tatis's historic numbers. The last time a team did that to him, he sent the entire team to Cancun single handedly.
TBh, Padres is pitching the heck to Ohtani. He’s 3-12 and 2 singles and 1 HR. Ohtani had great gm 1, Darvish schooled Ohtani with great breaking balls gm 3 - no fastball nothing to hit , gm 3 - Ohtani was 1-4, 1 single but King had wicked sweeper (12 inches right to left movement) and Scott (who has Ohtani’s #) threw wicked high away slider. Just missed a HR, 3-2 slider, 386 ft. Except gm2, Ohtani is hitting ball hard. Just getting the best pitch from Padres- nothing fastball down the middle like Bueller there to Tatis. Ohtani will be the hero in gm 4 vs Cease. Dodgers win gm 4 and win at home gm 5
As a baseball fan in the UK, I appreciate the effort getting this out overnight!
Thank you for listening!

Tatis is too good
looks like here in LA we’re gonna be talking about free agency and trades tomorrow
Only After the Manager is gone. He can't handle rolling baseballs that he's told about after the ball stops rolling.
