In the summer of 1978, I was 19 years old and determined to buy an electric guitar. I had $260 in my pocket from doing some construction work. A friend and I went to an Atlanta pawn shop that we visited occasionally because they always had guitars. My heart was set on a Fender Stratocaster, but the ones they had started at $300. There was this cherry-red Gibson they had for $240, though. I knew Gibson was a good brand, but I didn’t recognize the model, but it looked cool, so I bought it. Three years later, a musician friend told me it was a Gibson SG. He was puzzled by the pick guard, though, because his had the usual batwing. Fast-forward to 1998, when I was talking with a guitarist I’d met on a dating site. I described my SG, and she said, “Oh, that’s a Gibson SG Deluxe! they only made them in 1971 and 1972.” Mystery solved! I don’t know how to tell whether it’s a 1971 or 1972 model, though. I subsequently bought a 1996 MiM Fender Stratocaster, which is my favorite guitar, and I’ve often thought of selling my SG Deluxe because it’s worth a bit more than $240 now, but I’ve never been able to part with it.
Definitely worth a wee bit more than $240 these days! Really quirky guitars, but they play and sound great. I think they only way to tell the date is to check the date code on the pots. Even at that it's probably not that accurate. The way Gibson did serial numbers at that time is all over the place. Thanks a lot for checking out the video, much appreciated.
I just bought an all original; though refin. It's an extraordinary guitar. I call it it the ugly duckling . As with all of us though, looks aren't everything . Fantastic guitar, I love mine. Keep up the great work brother 👍
It's great to see someone address things about 70's SG's that are overlooked. Especially the tone of the bridge pickup with it being further away from the bridge. I own an early '74 Standard and it has that tone for sure! I also own a '74 SG Custom with the wider spacing and it makes a huge difference! It definitely makes it brighter! Fantastic video!
Awsome Histstory telling of the SG !! this one with the whammy bar is fantastic !! I never tryed one like this ...The colors are cool cherry red onr not , a beauty !!And sounds great !! I like the neck pick up too !! Very good origininal blues tune !! You make it sound very good !!!
What a special Guitar Dunsy! So unique and different. Awesome history, definitely educated me. My younger brother bought a brand new SG in the mid 90's and I loved playing it. Excellent sounds from your SG Dunsy, crisp and nicely tuned. You had me laughing at Storm Troopers Of Death!!! I grew up listening to SOD. Rocking Jam to finish off your upload!
Cheers Darren! I had fun putting the SOD tune in there, just to see how many folks spotted it, a 100% classic album. I love the sound of this old guitar, perfect for that 70's Rawk (and some groundbreaking crossover Thrash!).
Cheers Jim, yeah a beautiful sounding guitar - tricky to play down at the nut as it's so damn narrow. I don't if people had smaller hands in 1972. Although, to be fair, mine was pretty small in 1972!
Working man axe? ^_ ^ haha, not ugly, depends from to viewer ^__ ^ But yeah man, your videos are always so funny, cant stop smiling on those "cutscenes" so awesome! Good vid man!
Dunsy, I absolutely love your guitar and those pickups.😎👍 I’m a big fan of any SG with whammy bars and Bigsbys. I like the thinner neck versions 😎👍 I’m a big fan of Frank Zappa’s multiple modifications he did to his.
While preparing to do a video, I found out SG Ashley stands for something so simple like solid guitar?!?!?! Simple!!!! I love this tone! I’m hoping I can get better at playing classic rock because I’d love to do some demos of bands that I love.
Probably more "an acquired taste"! - they get a lot of hate as they're so different from any other SG. I can only think that this was Gibson cutting costs, but it only lasted a year.
Totally know what you mean - I can only think that the changes made in '71 to the SG was to simply cut costs. Not the best looking guitar, but definitely one of my best sounding ones. And they went straight back to the proper SG specs in late '72, so the public spoke loudly on this one!

Cheers Adam!
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Sounds great !!
That guitar is magic. But it might need some help with the bridge. Excellent review. Great sounds. A keeper for sure.

TOP for this sound ✌️🎸👈
Thanks Fabio, much appreciated.
Dunsy,
I absolutely love your guitar and those pickups.😎👍
I’m a big fan of any SG with whammy bars and Bigsbys.
I like the thinner neck versions 😎👍
I’m a big fan of Frank Zappa’s multiple modifications he did to his.
Cheers DL - yeah, this neck is super slim down at the nut, I can barely play the cowboy chords!
While preparing to do a video, I found out SG Ashley stands for something so simple like solid guitar?!?!?! Simple!!!! I love this tone! I’m hoping I can get better at playing classic rock because I’d love to do some demos of bands that I love.
Thanks JB. Crazy indeed! And ES stands for Electric Spanish - Gibson liked to keep it simple. This is a great guitar for classic rock.
@@DunsysGuitarWorld I never realized that. They really do keep it simple but when you get it right, why change it?
What type of amp, or amp sim did you use? Sounds excellent!
Cheers buddy - pretty sure I was using the Mooer GE150 on this.
Not my favorite look, but man it sounds good. I do love the Gibson chrome pup covers.
Definitely an acquired taste, Ben! They look goofy, but sounds great.
I don't find that guitar ugly! I like it -- it has character, and it sounds great!
Thank ya! Yes, an acquired taste - I actually like it, it's such an oddball. Sounds great tho.
This is my year
A great guitar - not the prettiest, but it just has something.
Who said it's ugly? LOL! That SG is sounding fine!
Probably more "an acquired taste"! - they get a lot of hate as they're so different from any other SG. I can only think that this was Gibson cutting costs, but it only lasted a year.
👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Captain 👍
Classic case of Dont fix something thats not broken otherwise you'll break it. But at least they fixed it. If you know what I mean ?!
