By very popular request following the Sol video, this is a video about dealing with and surviving against May's dolphin spam! The basics are covered but the big thing is after the basics... it gets complicated once they actually stop just spamming and learn to use it with more critical thinking. This also doubles as a guide on how to abuse dolphin spam since I am gonna be showing you a lot of the tactics around it so bonus, I guess!?
If there's one thing I'm having a problem as a pot player... how do you deal with ram's sword toss because FDB just stops them and doesn't throw a projectile back and 6P just lets me duck under it but they get to approach kinda easily
This is pain. I've actually practiced spam dolphin for when I come across someone that just won't respect it, but sometimes I drop the input and it feels bad because I'm being cheeky as hell
One thing I've noticed is that if you're using English voices, May's voice line for heavy vs light dolphin is different, you probably can't react in time to interrupt fast dolphin("Charge!" for heavy, "Go!" for light), but it does mean you know exactly what frame advantage you're on and whether you can press buttons after.
The voice line in Japanese voices are slightly different too actually. Just... Not AS different. On the fast the "TOTSUGEKI" comes out fast, but on the heavy version it's more "TOTSUGEKIIIII"

Off topic but as someone who never played gg I realy enjoyed the story, it’s ridiculous but some scenes are realy funny, characters are cool and the action scenes are amazing, this game is amazing most importantly because I can play online all the time without getting mad because of bad connections

Hey Roof a good way to tell is the audio cues when she does dolphins. Fast Dolphin she says it fast. Slow dolphin she stretches out the end of the word. In a nutshell: Fast = tosugeki! Slow = Tosugekiiiiiiiiii! defend/attack accordingly

At least for May, as long as I pay attention for May's Heavy Dolphin, I can react with the proper counter in time. I was using Hammerfall as Potemkin, but I should definitely try Slide Head; I seem to forget that move also has one hit of armor.
Ram players, here's some stuff you can do: Super - invincible and fast, costs a bar Forward punch - hard knockdown on CH Slash/Heavy - can convert into full combo using Red/Purple Roman cancel Down slash - Only use this against the slow dolphin, this will leave to massive damage. Sword projectile - amazing if the May is in the corner because this will let you get a full combo on counter hit and + frames on block. Lastly, don't forget about faultless defense so you don't get chipped out!

This helps me learn how to play may better thank you! Also thank you for all the guides I'm still not used to the inner mechanics of fighting games as well as the mind games that happen with them but I'm trying bit by bit.

Make it there before it's too late Right now because the game is new the floor placements are inaccurate. As time goes on players will naturally be placed at the floor they belong the more the game is played. This means that heaven is easy right now and will become harder in the future as competition builds up, same with the higher floors.

Godsend. I play Ky and just yesterday met May who just spammed some hit -> dolphin -> repeat for the first two rounds. Literally. I really struggled to figure out what buttons to press and when, to stop that madness. Once you get into blockstun it's just more difficult and if you get a counter-hit it's just never stops.

No1: Robo ky is no more and i think elphelt replaced him. Both are robot, they use multiple guns and very funny character. No2: Kliff underson is replaced by ramlethal, both have giant sword, kliff cloth is brown and ram skin is brown.😆 No3: Order sol is replaced by leo whitfang, both are holy order and have good combo, i think leo is always similar to sol cause they are both big boy with good combo so i think leo replace order sol. No4: Zappa is replaced by faust in strive. Faust is more creepy. Thats all😅. No5: Even though slayer is in xrd, i think he is similar to nagoriyuki, both have same comman grab, slayer dash is like teleport, nago don't have dash but he can teleport as well its just more ninja style, both are vampire and when they are defeated they lay on the ground with same animation. No6: A.B.A is replaced by jack-o, a.b.a get crazy when she change her key, and jack-o gets crazy when she put her mask on, and they both have a good looking crouch animation.😆 No7: Bridget is replaced by Kum Haehyun, bridget look like a girl but he is a boy, kum look like a boy/old man but its a girl. No8: Testament is replaced by Raven, they both look identical and use balck magic or something like that. First match online that I’ve ever played of this game (only other fighting game I’ve played is Fantasy Strike) was against a May and I have never been beat down in a multiplayer game worse in my life…
One of this issues I have is she can immediately go into her slide kick after dolphin. If they start doing that then this whole system goes out the window it seems.
I watched this video but never faced a good May before. Tonight I just played against a lvl 300+ May when I'm just just a little lvl 70 Potemkin. I lost 27 times, and only won 1 round (not match, just ONE ROUND). It felt like no matter what I did, nothing was ever safe. Her air attacks ALL counter mine (literally nothing I can do in the air would harm her ever, how the hell is that fair??), her anchor hurts Pot's arms whenever they clash, and the dolphin spam comes out so insanely fast that not even his 2P comes out fast enough. But the deal with this that bothers me even more is that when I got a lucky interrupt of her dolphin somehow, she's just barely out of reach for me to do any significant damage, meanwhile May gets her meter built up so quickly that she can just throw whales at me all day long. Potemkin's 6P feels slower than other characters, I can never get it out in time to stop her, and after her first hit it's already too late and I'm in the corner, taking half my HP in damage. I don't want to abandon my main or dodge Mays, there has to be something I can do to stay safe and punish meaningfully instead of throwing slash/heavy slash and hope for the best. Megafist is completely unusable in this fight because it's minus on block so every time I try to get close to her she starts her string and then it's a ticking time bomb.
Very nice guide! Personally, as a noob, I'm having much more trouble against Faust's scarecrow attack or against Anji Mito (I'm always unable to guess what will come out after his special)
Fuzzy mashing works. Get your muscle memory down to when you start to subconsciously block the slash dolphin, and stuff heavy slash dolphin. Record the AI on 2 slots to do May's F.S into fast dolphin twice and the 3rd setting to F.S Heavy slash dolphin. Have the dojo play the 3 recorded settings randomly.
My roommate just asked why I yelled “Dolphin Dolphin Dolphin Dolphin Fucking Dolphin Fucking Dolphin!!” The other night. I showed them the first 15 seconds of the video. They still think I’m insane though.
I feel like massively reducing the pushback on block would go a very long way towards making the dolphins bearable. Even if it means reducing the framed advantage for both sides to do it. As it is now, they really want you to instant block it it seems, but that is a tall order. That all aside, I thank you for the video. I learned some new things for fighting her. Most of them depressing.
This guide has been very informative don't know if people have been having trouble with them but I find Ram and Axl almost impossible to approach so if there is enough people who have trouble with them as well I would appreciate a guide on how to get in on them if it isn't too much trouble.
She can’t if you use the proper normal for your character. Every character has a couple of different buttons that can properly take their turn. However, some people try to use big buttons like 5S, and that will be beat majority of the time by May’s normals. Like 3K for example for May can dive under Sol’s 5H.
The S version should be IB-able on reaction for a real punish. I would understand not advising people to try, though. If you FD the H version, her f.S will still whiff a backdash or you can walk back safely. You can probably OS it with enough practice, but IMO the difference between the S and H animations is extremely obvious no matter how much they "mix it up" but maybe that's just me. You can see the startup of one, you can't see the startup of the other.
To beat the block a Little then punch i usually delay a little the Slash Dolphin, so that It Will look like i went for the HS one that time, cause the timing of blocking will seems similar at that point, but they Will get CH because It's S Dolphin and It's a lot faster
Could you do like a fuzzy jump for a more defensive option select that doesn't put you in such a bad spot if there's no dolphin? Block until fast dolphin would hit then jump away so if it's fast you're in blockstun and stay there, but if it's slow you jump away (and maybe can punish it from the air after it passes under you?) I'm not too experienced in fighting games but I think it would be doable for a 7 frame vs 25 frame move even considering prejump and such.
I wasn't exactly planning on maining May even if I liked her in the earlier games, but I've had top much fun to switch. The dolphin and killer whale are amazing for whiff punishing.
Videos like this are incredible. I really hope you put out more targeted information like this. Perhaps some collabs with The Blasted Salami on Strive content?

I dont get this part about no-dolphin mixup being dangerous, just use the 6p option select when you see the dolphin - if it's the slow you stuff it , if not you just block and are + on block and if for some ungodly reason you try it without seeing any dolphin you should slap yourself in the face for even trying to press the 6p and eat the punish cause you rightfully deserve it.
Dustloop has most/all of the frame data, if you want to know for a specific move look it up there. If you're wondering how they get the numbers, usually people test it by recording- trigger the AI to jump after blocking, then you hold jump after using a move. Then, you watch the recording frame by frame and see the difference between when each character lands.
well its an older video, dolphin spam was a very real concern at the start and it was difficult to deal with. They have been subsequently nerfed several times
Usually my strategy so far has been to dp as soon as I see the startup of the dolphin she’s locked in an animation so it hits her every time unless she rc cancels if you don’t have a dp rip though

I feel like massively reducing the pushback on block would go a very long way towards making the dolphins bearable. Even if it means reducing the framed advantage for both sides to do it. As it is now, they really want you to instant block it it seems, but that is a tall order.
That all aside, I thank you for the video. I learned some new things for fighting her. Most of them depressing.
Completely removing them from the game would also go a long way and probably make everyone happy :)

This guide has been very informative don't know if people have been having trouble with them but I find Ram and Axl almost impossible to approach so if there is enough people who have trouble with them as well I would appreciate a guide on how to get in on them if it isn't too much trouble.

@rooflemonger you forgot to mention that after de S dolphin. May can press 6P and still beat most of the pokes because of the Upper Body Invul
She can’t if you use the proper normal for your character. Every character has a couple of different buttons that can properly take their turn. However, some people try to use big buttons like 5S, and that will be beat majority of the time by May’s normals. Like 3K for example for May can dive under Sol’s 5H.
The funniest part of May is that she's listed as a "Balance" character on the Guilty Gear website.
The S version should be IB-able on reaction for a real punish. I would understand not advising people to try, though. If you FD the H version, her f.S will still whiff a backdash or you can walk back safely. You can probably OS it with enough practice, but IMO the difference between the S and H animations is extremely obvious no matter how much they "mix it up" but maybe that's just me. You can see the startup of one, you can't see the startup of the other.

To beat the block a Little then punch i usually delay a little the Slash Dolphin, so that It Will look like i went for the HS one that time, cause the timing of blocking will seems similar at that point, but they Will get CH because It's S Dolphin and It's a lot faster

Could you do like a fuzzy jump for a more defensive option select that doesn't put you in such a bad spot if there's no dolphin? Block until fast dolphin would hit then jump away so if it's fast you're in blockstun and stay there, but if it's slow you jump away (and maybe can punish it from the air after it passes under you?) I'm not too experienced in fighting games but I think it would be doable for a 7 frame vs 25 frame move even considering prejump and such.
I wasn't exactly planning on maining May even if I liked her in the earlier games, but I've had top much fun to switch. The dolphin and killer whale are amazing for whiff punishing.

I dont get this part about no-dolphin mixup being dangerous, just use the 6p option select when you see the dolphin - if it's the slow you stuff it , if not you just block and are + on block and if for some ungodly reason you try it without seeing any dolphin you should slap yourself in the face for even trying to press the 6p and eat the punish cause you rightfully deserve it.

How do people know the frame data when one can't see it in training
Dustloop has most/all of the frame data, if you want to know for a specific move look it up there. If you're wondering how they get the numbers, usually people test it by recording- trigger the AI to jump after blocking, then you hold jump after using a move. Then, you watch the recording frame by frame and see the difference between when each character lands.
This dolphin has so many layers, it might as well be an onion.

well its an older video, dolphin spam was a very real concern at the start and it was difficult to deal with. They have been subsequently nerfed several times

Usually my strategy so far has been to dp as soon as I see the startup of the dolphin she’s locked in an animation so it hits her every time unless she rc cancels if you don’t have a dp rip though
