Thank you for telling and showing the beauties of that sea lion story of Howe Sound. We join you in marveling in the bounty and interactions of the sea life, birds, the land/ocean and us as blessed observers. Thank you for being "our" eyes and ears there, so we can be glad also. Excellent film Bob, it helps fill in our knowledge of what is happening out on and under the water in Howe Sound. It feels like we are right there with you.

An amazing video story! In order to arrest the re-industrialation of Howe Sound, we need people to see what is going on in the local water. The recovery of the Sound in recent years is remarkable. Howe Sound is 20 minutes driving from downtown Vancouver, and should be seen as the treasure it is. Thank-you Bob, Len, and Rosemary for publishing this beautiful account.

Hi Bob, could you please tell me what kind of underwater camera you have as I would like to buy one. Also, are you able to share where this video was taken? We live near Lighthouse Park and want to know how far away this particular area is so that maybe we can kayak to it one day thanks!

So it’s Anchovy and not Herring attracting Sea Lions to Howe Sound? Please clarify.

There are both anchovy and herring that are known to spawn in Howe Sound and either type would attract the same type of animals to the area.

      Hello Stephane
In this case it was the anchovy the sea lions were hunting. Over the past 4 years I have been seen sea lions feeding on a fish ball 3 or 4 times in outer Howe Sound. In all cases that I was able to identify the fish of the fish ball, they were anchovy. I have talked to two others who have watched sea lions feeding on herring during the herring spawn in late winter in northern Howe Sound. So there is no doubt the sea lions feed on both species. My own observation is that sea lions are much more frequent in Howe Sound since the anchovy arrived in 2014, so it appears that the combination of both herring and anchovy make Howe Sound a more attractive place to hunt for sea lions.
