I think there should be more, but quickly disappearing ghosts. This way there will be more going on more frequently which increases the complexity and makes the player want to learn how to use the ghosts to their advantage, which increases the skill sealing. The last part would be much harder if the ghosts were rare.
If you have water pits in your stages I'd love an item called "Jesus' Sandals" with which you can walk on water. Also I just thought about a ruler-catapult. As a kid I always launched paper balls with rulers.
Everything sounds great! When you were talking about maybe tweaking the ghost spawn/duration numbers it got me thinking that it be cool to have minor variations in the effects of items possibly? Like some have higher or lower chances of activating and slight differences in how the activate, stuff like the ghost lasting longer or shorter or having the Queen Bee summon a more random amount of bees. It’s definitely be a bit more work to implement, but having rarity tiers and random variations may be a fun fix?
The Queen Bee item should definitively be much stronger than the Beehive ability. The cost of taking damage means that it should definitely be balanced out by being stronger, perhaps by adding more bees and/or damage.
I think you could have one time use items like an item to revive you, or an item that slaps the next boss for 25% of their hp or something, or a super coupon card that when you enter the shop it could make a random item free or something, also how about making santa give items and the easter bunny abilities?
