    I see Cabaret, I click. As someone who actually performed that Mein Heir number, it at least deserved an honorable mention. That dance ON A CHAIR was the hardest thing I’ve ever done as a performer.

      The Mein Herr number was created for the FILM of Cabaret. The song wasn't even in the original Broadway production. Yes, it's now often interpolated into new stage productions, but, either way, it's not an iconic Broadway dance number, it's an iconic film dance number.

      America is the most iconic West side story song and dance.

    • @parkerpennington
      @parkerpennington 5 лет назад +16

      I just saw West Side Story on the stage last night. It was my 6th time seeing it. This is a tough call. Both scenes are iconic for different reasons. In the Dance Hall scene there is that dance-off between the Jets and the Sharks, and Tony meets Maria in a dream-like sequence that has been often paid homage to in many films. Who doesn't remember watching that for the first time? But America captures the heart of the conflict within the Puerto-Rican community - a love-hate relationship with their adopted home - in the most captivating and exciting dance reparte' ever! So they both deserve to be on this list. I am guessing the lists author only wanted one dance number per musical, so she chose accordingly. Bottom line for me is I'd have picked America, more for the lyrics than even the dancing. It is incredibly well written and requires comedic timing to deliver the punch lines accented with the shake of a hip or roll of the head.

I have not seen the stage adaptation of 'Singing in the Rain' so cannot comment on the difficulty of the dance number in the stage show but I assume the stage show dance sequence was no where near as iconic as the one in the movie which is probably why it wasn't listed.

After Neil Simon saw a preview of the show, his then-wife (Marsha Mason) actually suggested that Cassie should make the chorus because of how much effort she put into the entire show (Neil Simon also reportedly said that if Cassie was cut, "nobody wins"). Okay first off. Mein Heir should’ve been on the list, it’s precision alone should’ve at least been honourably mentioned (not compared). You can’t stop the beat should’ve been number 2 at least, it’s one of the most memorable dances in broadway history I think because of its power and signification (the relationship between white and blacks) and One was definitely a good choice for first place, however “god I hope I get it” from the same show should’ve been an honourable mention.

      “Mein Heir” is a much better example of Fosse’s work, IMO, than “Hey Big Spender.” Also, I think the “Manson Trio” dance from the “Glory” song in “Pippin” should have been on here. If “One” wasn’t at the top of this list, my pick from “A Chorus Line” would have been “Music and the Mirror.” That entire performance is so underrated. But there’s a reason why Baryshnikov in “Baryshnikov on Broadway” chose “One” from “A Chorus Line” as his dream dance number and Liza Minnelli said “Sorry, you’re on your own for that one, buddy.”

    • @ReneeCamus
      @ReneeCamus 5 лет назад +4

      @@chiara1194 The thing about Bob Fosse in general and A Chorus Line and West Side Story in particular is that almost everything about them is iconic. Fosse had such a distinctive style that everything he did was iconic. Similarly with the different numbers in Chorus Line and WSS, they're all iconic, in different ways. So it's really hard to choose one over the others. :)
