    ABOUT VEDANTA
    Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
    Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

      Thank you for asking. It's hard to say... Back in my childhood, my dad used to talk about the Self. My mother read Teilhard de Chardin to me. There were many books. But the "I am presence" was already there, in the cradle. It was me, staring into that soft darkness with that feeling: here I am again. And that "I" felt so formless and so real at a time.
      Then, in time, the books. Now, the gift of the internet and these great talks. And your attention. I feel blessed.

    We are truly privileged to have Swamiji in our midst. I have been reading about this for a lot of years. But no one can nail it like Swamiji does. I think that this is a seminal lecture that we need to come back and listen again and again.
    Douglas Hofstadter in his amazing book "Godel Escher and Bach - The Eternal Golden Braid" addresses some of these issues. He uses Zen Buddhism to talk about perception .
    By reading trestises like that we would be able to better appreciate Swamiji. He is truly a phenomenon. I used to live in NJ. Now i regret that my time there did not overlap with Swamiji. It would have been amazing to interact with him.

    This has been a very comprehensive exposition from revered Swamiji. I am not sure if I am right, but the fact that we tend to give a term like 'consciousness ' or 'awareness' with associated etymological roots behind such names creates the objectification of this, and the confusion. As usual, Swamiji has been both profound and succinct at the same time. Pranaam Swamiji.

    Deduction -
    Where Object = senses, body, mind, emotions…
    Experience = Consciousness + Object.
    When senses, mind, emotions… are absent,
    Experience = Consciousness + 0.
    Thus, Experience = Consciousness
    Conclusion -
    Deep sleep is that state in which there is ONLY consciousness
    Deep sleep is not an absence of experience, it is an experience of absence.
    MANY MANY Thanks !!!

    Insightful discussion! FWIW, Brian Josephson, a Nobel laureate in Physics, suggests that scientists will eventually have to accept meditation as a valid scientific methodology, and perhaps a more promising approach than traditional scientific methodology, if they are to make any meaningful progress in their understanding of consciousness. As an Advaitin, I find Brian’s view refreshing.

    • @1oscarbravo

      Correct.According to Advaita Vedānta, the observed and the observer are both appearances within the one universal consciousness. It is the Ahaṃkāra (the ego, a function of mind) that generates the limited perspective of the observer and says, I am here looking out and everything else is not me.

    Hey Swami. I'm afraid you missed the meaning of subconsciousness and unconsciousness in psychoanalysis and analytical psychology. The first one is more or less correct : it is the region of the mind that contains things we are almost aware of. It is a ready to take material, as the fact that you are driving somewhere even when you have forgotten that while talking on the phone. You stop noticing that content, but it is explicitly driving your behaviour.
    Now, the unconsciousness deals with content you cannot easily get aware of using your mind or that you definitely cannot access. It concerns instincts, complexes learnt from trauma or childhood, for example. It also concerns the way the mind ilustrstes certain universal symbols in all cultures, what is called collective uncunsciousness in jungian psychology.
    Anyway...I really like when you explain anything, it is very clear and clever. Thank you Swami !

      I think his essential point is that if what you are referring to is part of what we call “mind”, then it is not what he is calling “consciousness”. More fundamentally, he is positing (of course inspired by Hindu philosophy) that there is “something” that is experiencing the mind - that is what he is calling consciousness. I don’t think this can be proven or disproven - it either matches your own personal experience or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t match your personal experience at least you will not run the risk of ever “losing your mind” !!

      @@santanudutta2555 I didn't get the joke, but it seems to be a good one haha. Anyway, yes, sure, I agree with you, elucidating the exact meaning of those psychologyc terms was not his aim, but to point to the fact that they are part of what Vedanta is calling the mind. It is a minor flaw in relation to his excellent speech. And I think conscioussness cannot be proven to be something you experience, exactly because it is the subject of experience itself. Just as is the eyballs metafor : they cannot see themselves, anyway they are self-evident to the person.
