ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

❤
I definitely agree swami is a gift to human kind. ❤
I'm listening to Vedanta messages for so long and now everything is turning into burning Love. I love you. I love you. All of you.
Blessed art Thou 🙏
💛
So nice to hear that .. How did you get connected to Vedanta in first place ..
Thank you for asking. It's hard to say... Back in my childhood, my dad used to talk about the Self. My mother read Teilhard de Chardin to me. There were many books. But the "I am presence" was already there, in the cradle. It was me, staring into that soft darkness with that feeling: here I am again. And that "I" felt so formless and so real at a time.
Then, in time, the books. Now, the gift of the internet and these great talks. And your attention. I feel blessed.
@@marinasimon you really have a v deep perspective.. I trust this truly becomes the journey of self realisation.. the only downside is how to then adjust in this world 😊
In 1971 when I was a neurochemist I became a radical monist and panpsychic
Recently thanks to Advaita and these and similar videos I know I'm not the body or mind
Thank you
I reached only 50 minutes and just need tto comment - Such clarity, patience, logic, incisiveness, detail... Even a rank beginner like me can appreciate and makes me want to see more.... Gratitude....! Pranam !
We are truly privileged to have Swamiji in our midst. I have been reading about this for a lot of years. But no one can nail it like Swamiji does. I think that this is a seminal lecture that we need to come back and listen again and again.
Douglas Hofstadter in his amazing book "Godel Escher and Bach - The Eternal Golden Braid" addresses some of these issues. He uses Zen Buddhism to talk about perception .
By reading trestises like that we would be able to better appreciate Swamiji. He is truly a phenomenon. I used to live in NJ. Now i regret that my time there did not overlap with Swamiji. It would have been amazing to interact with him.
Om Namah Shivaya
Everytime I listen to Swamiji, cannot help but think what amazing clarity he gives us ! My understanding of Indian Spirituality is only because of Swami Sarvapriyanandaji 🙏🙏
Pure gold. Thanks God for the Internet, RUclips and Swami.
Modern time Vivekananda, Ramakrishna 🙏👍👍🙏
He’s a national treasure.
_International_ treasure.
Samadhi: awareness without the mind. Deep sleep: ignorance without the mind. Turiya is consciousness; not three states but one realty.
This has been a very comprehensive exposition from revered Swamiji. I am not sure if I am right, but the fact that we tend to give a term like 'consciousness ' or 'awareness' with associated etymological roots behind such names creates the objectification of this, and the confusion. As usual, Swamiji has been both profound and succinct at the same time. Pranaam Swamiji.

thankyou for this helpful timestamping .
Deduction -
Where Object = senses, body, mind, emotions…
Experience = Consciousness + Object.
When senses, mind, emotions… are absent,
Experience = Consciousness + 0.
Thus, Experience = Consciousness
Conclusion -
Deep sleep is that state in which there is ONLY consciousness
Deep sleep is not an absence of experience, it is an experience of absence.
MANY MANY Thanks !!!
I wish in India the scool, colleges and other higher education teachers must be like Swami Sarvapriyananda.
There are no words to express, Swami Vivekananda's teachings are taken forward by such brilliant and selfless Guru's of Ramakrishna mission 👍👍.
I love listening to your talks Swami, and I am looking forward to the next talk on the Katha Upanishad, and the other Upanishads to follow (already heard the Mandukya Upanishad). Btw, I was Christof Koch’s secretary when he was at Caltech, before he moved up to the Allen Institute.
Yess please continue the upanishad series
What was your job as a secretary? Do u also take his classes? Are u a Caltech student?
@@arurukshu1 Professor Koch allowed me to attend many of his seminars, and also other seminars in neuroscience and biology. I was not a student at the time, and as his secretary, I typeset two of his books, including Methods in Neuronal Modeling, with Idan Segev. It was a pleasure working for him for 17 years!
In all the worlds there is nothing so sublime and perfect as Self-Knowledge
Thakur Shri Ramakrishna's another favourite phrase was: Manush means Man Hunsh: translated: a human means whose consciousness is there. He also used to bless people saying Tomar Chaityanya Hok: meaning let your Consciousness be illuminated or revealed.

Thank you Vedanta New York for sharing this 🙏🏻
Insightful discussion! FWIW, Brian Josephson, a Nobel laureate in Physics, suggests that scientists will eventually have to accept meditation as a valid scientific methodology, and perhaps a more promising approach than traditional scientific methodology, if they are to make any meaningful progress in their understanding of consciousness. As an Advaitin, I find Brian’s view refreshing.
One of the most briliant illuminating talks on consciousness. 🙏🏽
Great lecture! Helped my understanding a lot. Separating mind and consciousness is amazing to contemplate
Swami ji 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Super super super interpretation, swamiji, you made me just crying...with great joy..a beautiful pulse i have long been craving for..you did it for me....नमन, स्वामीजी 🙏
What an insightful presentation and discussion. This was so helpful! Thank You!

This talk of Swamiji's has helped me to understand the nature of self and world as nothing else has done. Pronam Swamiji.
Like we all in the ocean of one consciousness. The same consciousness is giving the 'I' feeling to all. Pronam.
This is a most needed and wonderfully spoken understanding of Indian philosophy. I gained so very much from this. I'll listen to it several more times. Many thanks Swamiji!
This is the most interesting discussion from the Swami.
Excellent elucidation on consciousness. Thanks to the organizers for having such a talk
In modern times Sri Aurobindo has done immense work on Consciouness and I hope the organizers will find it worthwhile to bring that deeper perspective on consciousness.
There is no other way to describe your talk other than to say - YOU ARE AWESOME !!! .... many thanks !

This is next level.
Beautiful session ... as usual 🙏
Thank you Swami Sarvapriananda for the clear explanations, and thanks to (CCS), NIMHANS for your kindness in hosting this session with the learned swami.
Grateful to Swami ji for such an illuminating talk
Jai Sri Ramakrishna! I am so happy!
Consciousness is seen as everything including you and me and exists without everything including you and me just as clay is seen as all pots and exists without them.
Beautiful... As usual
Cleared many doubts.Thanks swamiji.
Thank you Swami. I am enriched every time I hear you speak! ❤️
Thank you very much ❤🌹🙏.

Public comment. God bless you guru gee for sharing your knowledge and inspiration with devotees. I am happy and proud of you guru gee.
Such an illuminating session. Thank you for sharing your deep understanding of consciousness
Thank you for free sharing… great service to public education and philosophical and science literacy.
Love you Swami.
Profound. Clear. Eloquent. Thank you Swamiji.
I loved the questions and the video.
Jai Gurudev 🙏
Thank you Swami ji 🙏 🙏
Sairam Very illuminating, well explained. Will hear it again and again.. Thanks Swami.
Love you swami. True insight for inspiration. 🙏🙏🙏
That point where consciousness and object touch, what is that point ? Is that point Consciousness or matter? - subject or object ?
????
AMAZING LOGIC.
Superb Explanations by Swamiji on various aspects of Vedanta and Supreme Consciousness. 🙏Wonderful Video 💐
I often feel I am dreaming in real life.
I think this is the trick... To be detached, to know how insignificant life and it's problems are, to know that we are Brahman, we are in Brahman, and to always be at ease.
Macrocosmic dream (Jagat) projected by a Macrocosmic Mind (Brahman)
Absolutely Everything is Dream!
It's a usual experience in the quest for consciousness in self. As you become successively more detached, your senses see real images like dreams.
I blew soap bubbles with my friends. We could say that is my bubble, that is your bubble. But when the bubbles burst, we are not able to say this is my air, that is your air. There is ONLY AIR.
Great ! What a clarity.
I am learning a lot by listening, what a pleasant voice, explaining his own experience. Prannam.
Stunning!
Fantastic, thank you
Pronam Maharaj ji...🙏🏽
The way that Swami ji can discriminate btw the scientific and vedantic approach so precisely is js incredible
🙏🙏🙏
Thank you!
Thank you 🙏🏻 💕
Tremendous clarity brought to such a divergent subject. This clarity can only be realized through wisdom and not book knowledge! One must be "open minded" and listen through the explanation you delivered in a truly unique manner. Words cannot express my gratitude or love for the work you are doing! My humble thanks, Swamiji!
NIMAHANS guys need to know this side too. Swamiji is a great master.
Bernardo Kastrup - the new Galileo . Saying that matter comes from Consciousness , not the other way around . This is a ' quantum ' change in human outlook 🕉️
The book "Give up meditation get Enlightenment" provides a new dimension on mind and leads one to Enlightenment and provides free will... (Liberation)
Swamiji, pranam at your lotus feet with great awe and reverence. Really excellent explanation and grand synthesis of Eastern and Western perspectives on Mind body problem. Clear vision and insight and very logical and brilliant exposition. No words.. just Pranam in awe..
Swamiji, can Techyons in modern physics be considered as parallel to Tanmatras???
How life and consciousness can be separated???

Very interesting! Lots of insights!

object is resistence in the field, consciousness is the field, our objective is to gradually reduce our resistence in order to clarify consciousness
Jai Sri Ramakrishna Jai Sri Ramakrishna Jai Sri Ramakrishna Jai Sri Ramakrishna Jai Sri Ramakrishna
Sarvapriyananda is literally crushing it here
Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I wonder if there is a parallel with the currently accepted realization in quantum mechanics that the Observer cannot be separated from the Observed phenomenon. I think this is also what Tagore and Einstein debated, although inconclusively.
Correct.According to Advaita Vedānta, the observed and the observer are both appearances within the one universal consciousness. It is the Ahaṃkāra (the ego, a function of mind) that generates the limited perspective of the observer and says, I am here looking out and everything else is not me.
Sami g is so cool that he's trying not to be smug about how spiritually evolved Indian philosophy really is. An accident of history...divinity...who knows? India I think after listening to this beautiful man has something to teach the West and the world that I hope will be our salvation. I love when he talks about Lord Jesus especially.
God bless him and his soul

Viva Swami G
A great teacher, monk, lover of mankind.
I❤️all of you
Pranam Maharaj ji
I love the idea of dividing history into pre and post Upanishads.
It's funny because when we realize these truths and experience it first hand, the expressions become very simple. Like a great gratitude or repetitive statement
Hey Swami. I'm afraid you missed the meaning of subconsciousness and unconsciousness in psychoanalysis and analytical psychology. The first one is more or less correct : it is the region of the mind that contains things we are almost aware of. It is a ready to take material, as the fact that you are driving somewhere even when you have forgotten that while talking on the phone. You stop noticing that content, but it is explicitly driving your behaviour.
Now, the unconsciousness deals with content you cannot easily get aware of using your mind or that you definitely cannot access. It concerns instincts, complexes learnt from trauma or childhood, for example. It also concerns the way the mind ilustrstes certain universal symbols in all cultures, what is called collective uncunsciousness in jungian psychology.
Anyway...I really like when you explain anything, it is very clear and clever. Thank you Swami !
Thank you both 🙏
I think his essential point is that if what you are referring to is part of what we call “mind”, then it is not what he is calling “consciousness”. More fundamentally, he is positing (of course inspired by Hindu philosophy) that there is “something” that is experiencing the mind - that is what he is calling consciousness. I don’t think this can be proven or disproven - it either matches your own personal experience or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t match your personal experience at least you will not run the risk of ever “losing your mind” !!
@@santanudutta2555 I didn't get the joke, but it seems to be a good one haha. Anyway, yes, sure, I agree with you, elucidating the exact meaning of those psychologyc terms was not his aim, but to point to the fact that they are part of what Vedanta is calling the mind. It is a minor flaw in relation to his excellent speech. And I think conscioussness cannot be proven to be something you experience, exactly because it is the subject of experience itself. Just as is the eyballs metafor : they cannot see themselves, anyway they are self-evident to the person.
My pranams to you swamiji...and I am delighted to know that NIMHANS has asked swamiji to speak on the Pure Subject " I "
I love u.. my guru for life
