Thankyou Tom! My partner got no sense out of her supplier when her scooter came to a halt after two years light use.
"New charger and new battery - £800" was all they knew to say. She was in tears.
Nobody, but nobody, could suggest a way to check whether it was battery or charger failure or both. They were clueless as to whether the particular charger had to sense voltage before it could work (thank you for that tip) nor did they know there could be issues around having opted at purchase for lithium instead of lead acid. Read the manual? Haha!
My partner and I are heading off now to your Nithsdale Wheelchairs website where I feel sure we shall feel safe!

Excellent video. When you tested the voltage on each battery individually, you had 11.5v and 12.5 volts. Why do you think this is and what effects do you think this will cause in the future, if anything?

Could you advise on a scooter, shop rider, why the battery power shows it is falling within a few minutes, and the scooter slows down to an almost stop position.Would the speed control have any reason to cause this.? I mention this because when I turned the control knob at one point the scooter faltered.Any thoughts.?

I’m scared to go out on it again in case it stops and I’m stranded.

I'm new to the mobility scooter world and already I'm suffering from range anxiety. Batteries are 1 month old, I charge them up after each time I go out (usually only travel 3 miles maximum) overnight and the battery charger takes approx 14 hours to fully charge the batteries (it's as bad as waiting for paint to dry 🤣), but when I go out on my scooter by the time I've travelled about 1.5 mile, battery indicator light has dropped by 3 lights, but if I turn the scooter off and on again, the battery indicator shows only 1 light dropped. By the time I get home again (travel 2 - 3 miles maximum) 3 lights have dropped on the battery indicator on the scooter.......I only ever travel at the 2mph half speed . I also loose power even when travelling on the level, but if I stop turn the scooter off and on again, the scooter will travel at the ok speed for a while, then the speed drops again. I don't know if it's the batteries that are at fault, the charger or whether there is a problem with the scooter itself. I have a Pride Apex Rapid with 2 x 18ah batteries and I'm supposed to be able to travel a maximum of 16 miles depending on conditions. Any suggestions on what I ought to check to see what's wrong?

Thanks for the video: I fitted two new 75ah gel batteries in my Wife's Pride S4 scooter in April, so not cheap but thought we would be good for at least a couple of years, the AGM,s that were in before lasted 18 months.
She uses it most days for 2 or 3 miles, and she plugs it on charge with a Powerfirst PF2408LP intelligent charger at the end of every day. Back in April things were great she could run everywhere around the town and hardly drop a bar, now here we are in October and after two miles its flashing on 2 bars and barely managing to get back.
What do you think might have caused this? Do you think the charger might be delivering the wrong charging profile?

    • @tomjacques4
      @tomjacques4  2 года назад +2

As long as you are charging ever night and the charger states it fully charged then it should be unless there is an issue with the batteries. Gells should last around 4-8 Years. I would contact your supplier if it’s still under warranty.

Hello, I had the same problem with the gel batteries, they lasted 1 year before they were defective, I am currently driving AGM batteries, these have been in my mobile phone for 2 years without any problems, I live in the mountains and therefore always need 100% power, I I recently saw a video and it was said that it's best if the batteries are fully charged before each trip, no matter how far you've driven the mobile before, a maximum of 8 hours and I disconnect the mobile from the charger before I drive!

    • @tomjacques4

If the batteries are in poor condition then the charger may put more current into it hence warm up. Some
Have fans etc to keep them cool. Should really cool down the longer they charge as the current decreases.

Hi Cole I can’t find it on our site. Our plastic ones are a 10er and the male charging sockets also the more expensive ones (female charging sockets) are pre wired around 20-25 and come straight from the scooter manufacturers, plug and play. We recommend getting the correct connections so they make a proper contact this will prevent heat buildup in case 2 different connections are not matched.

Hi I have a question please me and my partner both have a scooter both are freerider brand with 50AH lead acid batteries on we keep them out side at the back of the house which has been fine for the summer as we have only had them since April this year my concern is the winter is coming lower night time temperature frost and freezing ect the scooters will be in these temperatures I can house them in a shed to keep the weather out and have fitted outdoor weather proof plug sockets so we can charge them outside obviously keeping the charger away from any rain or water but I am not sure what to do to avoid any damage to the batteries we will still be using the scooters during the winter and charging them what would be the best way to protect the batteries ? I had thought about removing them from the scooters on colder nights and bringing them indoors but then I cannot charge them away from the scooter or if the charger is plugged in and connected to the batteries on the scooter will the charging be enough to stop the batteries from freezing and getting damaged I assume while charging some heat is created in the batteries is this enough many thanks .

Billy Hood correct as long as you charge them during the night you should be ok. A good quality waterproof cover is a must, no silly cheap £25 cover. No plastic either. You must let the scooter breath otherwise condensation will occur and will start rusting etc. Hope that helps

Hi Tom, very informative videos. I never realised there was so much involved with electric mobility scooters
My friend has a problem with his 8 amp 3 stage charger. (It looks very similar to the blue one in your video at 24 mins approx.)
The three leds are flashing when you connect it up. The sequence is low battery lrd flashes once then all three leds flash together. This constantly repeats. Also a relay can be heard opening and closing in the unit.
Is this a problem with the charger or with the batteries being flat on the scooter? ( It has been idle for some time)
    Cheers

    • @trevorbest-gn2dq

      Hi Tom,
Back about the same problem. His supplier brought 2 brand new batteries but charger behaving as before. This is the first time I was able to check the bike out. I noticed that the charger connection had a lot of slack movement. I had to remove the fairing, headlight etc yo get access. When I eventually got the charging socket free from the bike the cable was not a short one, like in your video, instead the cable disappeared into one of the frame legs and went right back to the control box! I imagine the fix is to cut the cable up near the handlebars and solder on a replacement with the short lead. Is this recommended.? I didn't want to start cutting cables if this was not the approved method.
Akso noticed when I switched the ignition on the display eas reading 24volts. ( I thought this was full charge but after watching your video I'm not sure. Anyway, I was able to drive the scooter but noticed the voltage dropped very quickly and after about 200 or 300 yards the audible low battery indicator started sounding.
I'm more confused than ever. If the batteries weren't charging, how was the scooter able to drive at all. And why did it rjn out so quickly if the onboard voltmeter was showjng 24 volts. Sorry to be so long winded but I would like to get to the bottom of this
      Cheers
      Trevor

Your video was helpful trying to figure out the status of batteries on a used scooter we bought - I'm not good with electrical issues. I have two questions you may be able to help with. I'm going to replace my batteries. I currently have two 12v 18aH batteries. Can I upgrade to two 12v 22Ah batteries (same physical size) to increase my range? I assume I need to buy a new charger if I get highter AH batteries.
If you advise against increasing size, do you see a problem with the power supply that came with our scooter? It says GEL battery charger (Model P1202B, DC output +24v 1.8A. THe old batteries are SLA and I intend to replace them with SLA's regardless of the amp hours.
I don't think it matters, but just in case, I have a GoldenTechnologiesi LiteRIder 3-wheel scooter, model GL110. I don't know the age of the scooter. I don't have the manual. The only Serial Number I can find is near the back wheel axel - GLC0006. Thank you for any advise you can offer.

Just curious as to why you didn't simply make a cable adaptor using that new female socket you installed wired to the plug off the dead charger? Would have avoided modifying the scooter and allowed a charger with either connector type to have been used in the future. Otherwise - good video.

    • @tomjacques4

Yep sure could of but don’t like too many joints more chances of overheating if they become slack. And those Anderson connectors are not the best. Mind you I’ve done it before but not with those connectors but with the 3 pin connectors for reverse polarity chargers. well spotted mate.

I have an older model shoprider 3 wheeler, wondering about getting a replacement charger off ebay,
they tend to only have positive on pin1 and negative on pin2, nothing on pin3 the inhiibit wire.
I assume the batteries will still charge with these chargers but no inhibit function, can you just join the negative on pin2 to pin3 thus making pin3 negative also and making the ihibit function work?
Australia here, dont want to blow anything up.

can you tell me how i can load test my 75ah mobility batterys. not one video on youtube tells how to load test mobility batterys correctly. how do i know what the cold cranking number is. i have got i 6/12v load tester but its for batterys with cold cranking readings. And mobility batterys just dont have this number. i have tested my batterys with this load tester here,s what happened. i charged batterys fully i think they charged upto 26.3v. i then left then for a few hours and they settled permenently at 25.8v i did a load test on each individual 12v battery these were the results... starting charge on load tester was12.6v i load tested them for 10 seconds and they dropped to 11.4v and then recovered to 12.6v the needle pointer kept in the lower green zone through out the load test then recovered upto the top of the green zone. could you help in any way or maybe do a proper video on the subject. it appears no one else will do load tests on mobility batterys. could you use 75ah batts in the test if at all posible... love watching your vlogs my friend, they really are educating and intresting. Good Morning Karl: there are a few reasons that could influence the speed and this will depend on the scooter your have. 1. the throttle pot 2. the speed pot 3. Half speed switch 4. some (8mph) may have a micro switch on the tiller to slow down the speed on corners 5. slack or faulty wiring 6. a worn or broken brush unit (depending if your motor is fitting with 4 brushes) 7. An electric brake problem. 8. controller issue..... So as you can see there will be a lot to check ....

The gel batteries don't convince me at all, I live on the mountain and I'm not allowed to use public transport with my mobile (it's not safe) I have to use my mobile to go to the doctor, go shopping, etc. even in winter, I take care of myself and I don't have any help AGM batteries are the best they keep the voltage even if 1/4 of the energy has been used, but it is also clear that in winter at minus degrees the energy is used up faster and they are a bit more expensive to buy but they last longer than the gel batteries . I have no problems with AGM batteries.
