Walt's nervousness here actually helps his cover. It makes him appear clueless and maybe a little naive about a potential meth head raid. Just a sheepish and overly trusting teacher who got taken advantage of.
Absolutely. It would have also helped when Gale was killed. Walter could have told Hank that he knew him and that he reached out to him recently asking for advice on something he was working on. He could say his journal looked familiar and that he thought Gale was working on a formula for a more potent and cost-efficient form of Adderall or Desoxyn, but Gale was being particularly evasive about it. He could then say he gave him some pointers on how to increase purity and Gale was really excited and gifted him a book. He could then add that the last time he spoke to him Gale seemed nervous about something. This would paint the picture that Walt was Naive about what Gale was doing and by describing him as an intelligent and seemingly gentle soul, he would never have suspected he was a meth cook. It also would technically give Walt the credit for Gale's "Breakthrough" that made him the best meth cook in America without Walt actually getting in trouble for it. He could even play the scared old man who thinks Hank will have to arrest him for helping Gale just to seal the deal. Hank, being who he is, would probably believe Walt and just let the investigation into his association with Gale end there.
