  • Feeding the wild birds can attract rodents, but there are some preventative measures that can help to deter them. They eat similar foods to wild birds so any wastage that ends up on the floor is likely to attract them!
Here are our top preventative measures:
    • Look to buy a bird table with a solid surround and only a small hole for cleaning (such as the Honeyfield’s Chelmsford Bird Table). This avoids seeds being thrown to the floor.
    • Feeders with a port design help to hold seeds in, this combined with a feeder tray aids in collecting any fallen seeds. Check out the Honeyfield’s Heavy Duty Seed Feeder and Tray combination.
    • Birds selectively pick their favourite foods and discard unwanted seeds onto the ground. High quality mixes tend to have less fillers, so the birds won’t pick around the ones they don’t want.
    • Try feeding straights in individual feeders such as Sunflower Hearts, Peanuts and Nyjer Seed.

The starlings are the ones that cause good to scatter on the ground even with the best feeders one can buy.
Because I have a lot of wood pigeons, collard doves, magpies and the rest, the garden is kept clear of leftovers.
I check every evening and cannot find any seeds etc anywhere, thank goodness.
A good tip is this : late evening remove all feeders, fat balls and suet blocks. Seems rather time consuming, but it really pays off.I
The trouble with ground feeders is that some people leave it out and there is always some food underneath and around it. I avoid this by not having one !
    Kind regards.
