- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2024
- I had a LOT of people asking how to set up the wing controllers for my Aether Wing assets, and there aren't many tutorials that really show you how to set it up step-by-step. So hopefully this remedies that!
Please consider supporting my work by purchasing my wing assets.

What I really love about you is that you explain WHY you're choosing to do things a specific way. When on your own, it can be very difficult to remember what does what and what you're supposed to do so sometimes we just roll with it and we miss important things and wonder why it's broken. Being told why makes it easier to understand and it allows to better learn how things work, which allow for better flow in learning/memorizing
That's how I learn and comprehend things, so I try to use that same train of logic while making tutorials. ^_^
I'd been watching someone else's tutorial for ages, feeling at the end of my rope and ready to give up entirely, when you so blessedly delivered my answer in the form of a single checkbox I didn't know needed to be checked...
I feel dumb, but also blessed
I can wholeheartedly relate to that.
This was so helpful! I didn't think I'd grasp building puppet controls, but this tutorial answered a lot of questions. Thank you!
Happy to help!
This is awesome!! I’m a complete beginner, and have no idea how this works, but my practice in Blender helped me follow most of what you were explaining! Great tutorial, as always. Thank you for helping thousands of people around the world, Neffertity! 💜💜
Always going to try my best. 💕
Thank you so much for such an informative, precise, and patient tutorial. I came into this knowing nothing about puppets and was actually really worried about animating some wings. Thanks to you I now have a working set of wings for my AV now! You're a pillar of the community Neffertity ❤
I'm so freaking happy I got your wings and tail! Now I noticed something when you said to Parent the wings to the chest bone instead of the spine. If you parent them to the spine the anims won't work for some reason, so only parenting them to the Chest makes the anims work!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
I'm happy you enjoy them!
I despaired at trying to set up some angel wings for an avatar but your tutorial saved me so much stress. Thank you very much! Very clear and to the point.
Glad it helped!
Even though I barely play vr anymore, this video is not only informative, but also very smooth and satisfying to watch, and everything feels amazingly good, I hope people will be able to use this to make theirs and other’s experiences more dynamic
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
Also if it still don't work make sure to have Is Animated on in your Phys Bones. This only applies if you have Phys bones on the item your animating.
It's still isnt working 😅 I have been having trouble with it
This comment literally saved my whole project I’m gonna cry, thank you lovely human being 😭❤
Simple and concise tutorial, thanks! Easily applicable to tails and ears too
I hope you make more Vrchat tutorials! They’re very easy to follow and I would love to know more of your techniques!
I definitely intend to
good job on this tutorial i really learned a lot thank you
@arctic! let me rephrase that, im learning a lot from this
Nice. Perfect Tutorial. made myself a spell targeting system with this XD Did have a small issue with the directions but that was easily solved with moving the animations to another slot. Thank you kindly~♪
Thank you very much for this, it is amazingly detailed in the steps just what we all need even if we are not in vr.
Thank you sooooo much, I always wanted to learn how to do/make a 2 axis puppet controller. I have my own Spider-Man (Iron-Spider) avatar and I gave a toggle to have 4 mechanical spider legs, I always wanted to have the ability to individually move/control the legs around while im on vr or desktop mode.
Oh that sounds awesome!
GOSH THIS WAS A LIFE SAVER I love how my wings turned out! REALLY APPRECIATE FOR MAKIN THIS TUTORIAL AND ALSO INCLUDING HOW TO MAKE ANIMATION!!! 🫶
thank u so so much i watched this video so many times cuz im a forgetful person and it helped me every time so again thank u
Thank you for that video, even tho it was 5 months ago from now, but thanks to you, learned how to do stuff like that, especially when i suck at unity work still. Your explainations were on point and clear 💚
I'm happy it was informative
this is such a big help and so well explained thank you so much ❤
if you have time to, are you thinking of doing more vrchat tutorials? 0:
Yes.
I want to make more tutorials for the more niche things that I struggled to learn.
I play very long, this help very much, so I could not find the wigs at the town control are the key.
For anyone wondering why their controller isn't working - double check your physbones have the "is animated" box checked
thank you bro i have been panicking about this for hours
Hi, do you know how to make removable eyelids for Dino masks? I can’t find tutorials anywhere :,)
I think I can make a tutorial for that
@@Neffertity thanks!
I know I'm late to the comments; but thank you for an amazing tutorial!❤ I had never done this before and you made it extremely easy to follow and everything worked first try.
One question: I know you mentioned to reduce the transition times for a less snappy movement, but I can't figure out where to adjust that.
It's in the little arrow that connects the entry state to the blend tree
Hello! Seeing as these were made with the Nardoragon in mind is there an updated version for the v3 of the Nardo? As my controller isn’t working due to the changed armature setup! Also probably a weird question but how can the wings be scaled down? When I use the scale it just moves the wings down.
I'll take a look at the package and see of I can revamp it
@@Neffertity I appreciate it! If a fix is possible would you just post it on your Twitter or your website?
@@TheMarioManiac ill send out a mass email to those who purchased the wing asset
Im curious about the "folded wings" state included with the Birdie wings. Is where away to include it along with the default wing animation or is it a "this or that" option for the puppet menu? (Also oh my gog thankyou- your whole tutorial on just the animator in general is so straight forward!)
That was made mostly as a possible toggle pose.
But I never used it, so I kept it in the package for anyone to fiddle with if they wanted.
Awesome tutorial! Thanks for making this! :)
Oh my gosh yessssss
Im having a hard time with the wings and i was gonna try to make them toggleable but they werent working at all i even followed all the steps and followed the commits tips i dont know what to do 😅
You can reach out via discord and I'll try to troubleshoot the issue with you.
i'm having this issue where it works fine in play mode using gesture manager, but when i try it out ingame it's stuck in tpose D:
great tutorial, though
nevermind, for some reason d4rk's avatar optimizer was breaking that puppet despite the others working fine ._. i'm leaving this here in case it helps someone else
Ik this is off topic to the video, but I wanted to suggest a video idea & you can also sell it! I would love to see a big floofy husky/curly dog tail pattern!! Obviously, this is just a suggestion. It would just be cool to see.
Definitely something I plan to add at some point
Hey i know this is bit confusing but do you know any videos that can help me change tail on nardo dragon as i bought ur feathered tail asset but im confused on how to put it on?
I can definitely make a video like that for you.
if you can that would be a huge help thank you @@Neffertity
Question from the live: fav dog breed?
Not really a dog person.
But I think Akitas are nice
Now I can control all the tentacles! Thank you
Very helpful video was a success but my wings default pointing forward and up like when I spawn in until I select the control toggle?
Hmm it might be the physbone. Make sure it doesn't have the angle limiter set too high.
@@Neffertity my max angle is set to 20
im haveing a problem when i follow this video with the blended wings it dosent work the wheel is there but they dont move
Make sure your bone root is named the same.
It HAS TO BE:
Armature-Hips-Spine-Chest
Hey uh I got the physbones set up properly so the wings wiggle and such, but the controller does not move them at all on the bubblegum bark big cat base
Hmm I've tested them on that base and they seem to work without issue.
Doublecheck that they are in the right place in the armature
Ya know I’m someone who wants to know the 2 axis puppets to do FNF animations on my avis (omg an fnf fan oh no) and I’m just wandering if it would work on like arms, legs, chest, hips, fingers and if there is a tutorial on how I could lock it in place (sorry if this looks like a mess I usually never send comments on videos)
Unfortunately you can't add puppets to parts of humanoid rigs.
The only way to do that would be to have the whole avatar as a puppet. Or to play a pre-made animation that freezes tracking control while the animation plays.
So a friend of mine recently bought the wings and she can't seem to find the root of the wings that you mentioned on your page. Could someone help us out?
There's a followup video I posted recently thst might help
Are there any tweaks one would need to know to apply this to a hand or any other part of the body? I've checked all checks, all points and re-followed a couple times, but it still doesn't work.
You can't add puppets to parts of your humanoid rig unless you also turn off tracking control.
Which is a bit of a complex process to explain.
@@Neffertity Thank you nonetheless!
ive only now noticed that the wings have a weird symmetry bug, the right one has a clipping issue and is dispositioned relative to the left one, is there a fix for this?
I've personally not noticed this?
But you can always slightly scooch the root of one up in the heiarchy.
Owhh nice, this shall be helpfull
I don't know why I couldn't make it work on mine, I tried following every single step and it just didn't in the end
Feel free to email me and I can try to help.
I keep following this tutorial but my wings still flop around. The animation works! But they're extremely bouncy and no one knows how to fix it be cause it's never happened to them before
It's likely the settings on the physbones.
Hey it does work but nobody, not even my friends can see them move in VRChat, only i can see it, any clue? Cannot figure it out
Make sure you have "synced" ticked in the parameters
@@Neffertity Ah, thanks! I alreafy figured it out a bit ago, I wish these boxes were always checked by default!
quick question! is it possible to use the radical menu to make the wings move up and down?
Yes. You just have to make the animations
@@Neffertity yee! I figured it out, thank you!
I'm having some issues with mine, I cant get them to animate. Do the armature names have to be identical? I'm trying to place it on the Snaggletooth kobold and his is set to Root>Avatar>mPelvis>mTorso>mChest vs the suggested root>armature>hip>spine>chest. I want to avoid having to completely rebuild the animations if I dont have to. is there a discord I can go to for help since I dont own the Nardodragon?
Yes the armature names have to be exact, otherwise you have to redo the anims.
@@Neffertity Ok, thank you for the quick reply ^_^ I'm so glad you have the tutorial for that in the video because I'd be so lost
I know im late to the videos comments but I did everything correctly and the controller works fine but for some reason my tail (I used this for a tail controller) gravitates alll the way up by default when in game or in play mode in unity? I tried fiddling with physics to fix it, aswell as trying to reposition the tail to compensate for the odd placment but im not sure what else to do?
It could be a physbone collider, or a setting being in the negatives.
@@Neffertity hmm I see, for refrence i have a bunch of bones in my tail and just used the tailroot to apply the physics to all of the smaller ones, should i nooot do that?
@VoidedAurora it depends how the bones are parented. Make sure they go down in the correct numerical order
I followed the tutorial but in the end i have only been able to have the wings go from default to up or down while hug and spread dont work but in unity they show like they are meant to
Make sure all your parameters are spelled right
went and checked to find i did the mistake i make when doing a capital letter so the first time i did WIngsH and didnt see i did a I not i. fixed it now thank you
@@emeraldgameplay yep! I've done that several times myself! Haha
Hello! Ive commented on here before, ive used these on my wickerbeast and it works, the wings control does, but the wings are not folded in the play scene.
You have to use an emulator to play default anims
@@Neffertity What is an emulator?
@@NeffertityThey also dont fold in vrc.
@TWROFFICAL it could be due to a couple things.
I posted a recent video that might help
idk if this has been answered or not but would this tutorial also work for the phoenix wings?
It does indeed.
Though the Phoenix Wings come with animations when you buy the package.
@@Neffertity alrighty thank you UwU
This might be a little late because u did a vid on it a year ago but I'm struggling on how or what do u use to clean a fursuit with lights in them and I'm soon making my fursuit with lights and fans in it but if u do reply to it thank you very much!
I have a question, I followed everything said to do, but when I load in game the wings are stuck in position like in Unity. The physbones work perfect it's just the puppets don't work and it's not in default state like it should be. I've retried every step and triple check if everything was done right (which everything is done right on my screen.) Do you know how to fix it??
Make sure the bone roots are named and spelled exactly.
@@Neffertity
Everything is named, and spelled correctly in all parts of the wings setup. When I double checked my spelling and names they all matched up. When I loaded in game the wings were still in T-pose like in Unity. 😭
Also sorry for such a late, late reply-
@@PeaxhyLizzy what avatar are you trying to put them on?
@@Neffertity The Novabeast that Kittomatic made. Also for some reason it wouldn't let me see your other replies- so my apologies 😭
I am an inexperienced user in Unity.. how did you unpack the prefab-?
O_O;
Right click, "unpack prefab completely"
Great tutorial! I'm going to get these soon, but I am wondering if I am able to attach them to my avatar's arms (like a dromaeosaur/raptor)? I'm not an expert with edits, so I have no idea how I'd be able to do that :'D and these wings would look gorgeous on arms.
That's something that would require weight painting adjustments in Blender.
Pls make a kemono fursutit❤
I have a wing flap animation and have been trying to get a float(radial dial) to work with a wing hug animation...
Well, it has not worked no matter what I do. XD
Is there a way to have a wing animation and be able to have a new rotation with any type of float?
What model are you trying to put it on?
Anims can override puppets
@@Neffertity Commission I've done for someone. I have no puppets on the avatar, just bool/int and radial dial using floats.
The wing flap animation is in the FX layer in base, and plays by default.
I currently have it half working... where when I start to move the radial dial, the flapping stops. But the wings don't hug like the new animation is supposed to.
Would what I'm looking for be achievable with puppets though? Im willing to learn them if it will fix whatever this is. XD
@@CupcakeSprinkleUwU I don't think you can have the anim play at the same time as the puppet
I am having an issue to where only one of the wings move around, anyone know a fix for that?
Make sure both bones have "is animated" ticked
This is extremely helpful, but I do have one question do i need to import the poiyomi if i am using the creator companion or does it do it automatically?
You can use whatever shader you want.
Just be aware that not all shaders are quest compatible.
Big fan of the wings and absolutely love em! Just had a couple issues that maybe you could help out with, if you could that would be great!
What seems to be the issue?
@@Neffertity The wings seem to not wanna pair up with the Rexioium for some odd reason. It works in unity but precedes to stay static in VRC. It does work for other models like the nardo but for some reason glitches out on any Rex.
@nicholasschuster6558 make sure you redo the animations.
The Rex has an upper chest transform which messes with the premade animations.
@@Neffertity Well to no avail, I have remade all five animations and it works perfect in unity but the second it goes into VRC it just goes static once again. I am still unsure what the problems is unless I have to remove the upper chest transform but I am unsure on how to do that as well. This might be a big ask but would you have an example specifically tailored for the rex?
@@Neffertity this really is something that should be on the sales page...my customer just bought this and they won't be happy
how i install this animator? i dont have it
github.com/BlackStartx/VRC-Gesture-Manager
thank you for this video but for future !!! i could not see ur mouse lolol
I'll make a note to add a bright highlighter circle around it in the future.
ok so this worked for EVERY avatar ive used it on except this newest one. NOTHING i do is working and its the same files ive been using. no matter what i do it just wont animate and im kinda losing hope. idk what im doing wrong, ive even used AV3 manager to merge layers from an avatar that does work but still nothing???? someone plz helpppppp!!!!
Which avatar are you having issues with?
@@Neffertity it's an model called rayk. One of my friends say it might have something that's over riding the animations but I can't figure out what it is
@@DarkclawStar it could be the number of parameters. It looks like it could be a conflict with the DPS system.
Puppets often conflict with that.
@@Neffertity oh??? Yea I did have a little trouble setting up the dps since I edited the base model in blender. I think I can mess with it a bit more or just get rid of the dps to see if that's it
@@DarkclawStar I have noticed that models with too many parameters tend to override puppets.
Thank you so much
anyone know how to make the avatar use the wings IN vr. like i grab a space and the wing animations work based off were I put my hands.
They would have to be rigged to your human arms
How tho, like I've seen it done but how, any guides or videos out there for it?
@ech0ing_f0xx24 it does require some blender knowledge, otherwise you have to use a TON of rotation constraints.
I'll see if I can make a video about it.
@@Neffertity plzz, I wanna use it but I've never been shown how to.
This is so helpful! Also, I know you use Sculptris, can you make vr models with it? And also it keeps crashing for me, is there a way to fix that? I have a nice computer but it just isn’t happy
Unfortunately not, as Sculptris is super limited and usually crashes before you can reach that detail state.
You could use it for building base shapes, then retopologizing them.
But at that point you'd just be better off sculpting in blender.
@@Neffertity thanks! now I just need to figure out how in the world blender works, ohhhh boy, I opened it and my brain melted 😂
Does it onöy work with furries?
My wings can be put on any avatar
the animations don't work for me, went through the tutorial a few times and i haven't found out why
Which avatar are you attempting to use them on?
@@Neffertity i was making a rexouium with them, whenever i tried to view the animations in unity all the components were missing
@animationz451 Ah. That's because the Rex has an "upper chest" bone.
The anims are looking for the HIPS>SPINE>CHEST path.
So in this case you would have to reanimate the wings manually.
@@Neffertity i believe the version i’m using has no upper chest bone, but i’ve tried reanimating too. when i reanimated it worked in unity, however they still didn’t work in vrc
@@an1mationz hmm
Do the animations work in unity?
The wings move around nd such when I walk, but when I try to use the controller nothing happens, this is with the rexouium, any help or tips would be appreciated
That's because the Rex has an UPPER CHEST bone transform.
The anims look for the HIPS-SPINE-CHEST route.
For the Rex you will have to redo the anims.
@@Neffertity This is a really late reply, but utilizing vrcfury you can completely mitigate this problem now!
Using their full controller component, you can redirect animation paths.
To do it, you would add the component onto the VRCFury prefrab, put the FX controller into the FX controller slot, create a parameter menu, add the params the FX Layer/or menu uses, and slot it into the specified area for parameters and next add in the menu to its slot with a prefix underneath it to give it a custom menu slot.
Next under advanced options on the same component there is something called "Binding Rewrite Rules". This will change the anim paths to whatever you desire by itself.
vrcfury will identify the missing anims for you. Lets say the anims look for Armature/Hips/Spine/Chest/AetherWings
You would type that into the given box, then a new box will appear. Leave it empty! VRCFury will assign the anims to where ever you place the prefab, allowing you to completely avoid having to redo everything, and ontop of that its vrcfury, its non destructive.
It will then apply all of the changes when you upload your avatar, meaning your parameters, FX Layers, and menu paths all stay untouched within the editor, meaning if something breaks on the prefab (whether it be this or something else) it leaves your avatar untouched. My DMs on discord are open @baptobismol if you need any help with understanding this better!
oh maaann...I'm either too stupid for it or I have no idea. I don't have this vrc physicbones or I can't even find an animator. I just started with unity
🤔😔😪
Sorry for saying this late wishing you all a merry crismass all
If my hand gestures have ear animations on them, will those override the puppet? or can I have both?
EDIT: They override my ears, and I can't figure out how to make both work. The puppet is lockable/poseable and I'd like to find a way to disable that.
They should not be overriding your ears
CAN YOU DO IT WITH ARMS??
What exactly do you mean? Lime controlling the wings with your arms?
@@Neffertity They probably meant controlling the arms with a two axis puppet. Probably sounds confusing but that's very convenient for desktop players. I personally am experiencing issues with setting up an axis puppet to move the arm, checked everything I could check. Was left confused. It would be nice to have a tutorial for moving parts of the body like that, thank you beforehand if you do one!
Can you make a Phoenix reference sheet base?
At some point perhaps.
I do have a couple bird ones
@@Neffertity yeah I love birds even though I do have an irrational fear of birds

They do actually.
I've quadruple checked.
I don't understand any of this, I'm a complete beginner and literally can't find any tutorials that actually help.

I am, I'm just severely behind schedule.

Well I know now how to make fnf avatars
Hey Neffertity!! This comment isn't really related to the video at all, but I was watching Skye's newest vid and noticed she mentioned you as one of her favorite toony suit makers! Thought I'd drop a comment to let you know :D Timestamp is around 3:25 on this vid if you wanna see for yourself!!

I didn't know Skye did that.
That's really sweet.
Thank you for letting me know. 💙
thank you
This is so neat! I tottally forgot that you did vrchat models lol, it looks so good! I do have a question though, will you be making any tutorials on how to make a back shark fin? ^^
I think I could easily do a tutorial for that.
I'll add it to my list.
Hi hi! Came back to ask if it's possible to fix the drag(?) for e.g when the wings are folded and I walk around they spread wide open and drag back
You can try messing around with the angle limiter.
@@Neffertity sorry for the late response, will def try that out tysm!
Awesome!!
Love how clear and direct this video is! Although for some reason the wings do not animate in game for me, I've followed the steps and double checked my naming like 3 times, and still they do not move when using the menu. I'm using the Skip4D Chibi base. Unsure if it's something with the model itself or maybe I just need to go through and double check my steps one last time ^^; Either way I love your work, keep it up!
Make sure the floats for the wings are higher up in the list.
If a base has lots of other floats, it will give priority to the ones higher on the list.
I keep getting "A polygon of Mesh 'Body' in Assets/Aether Wings/AetherWings.fbx is self-intersecting and has been discarded." I don't know what that is or how to fix it or where to find the issue for the wings
It was a weird polygon on the back of the left wing.
I didn't know what it was at first either, but I have since fixed it.
If you want the updated fbx just send me an email with proof of purchase.
Oh my gosh, this was so helpful thank you! Very good tutorial, very nicely pased, and easy to follow! Your awseome Neffirtity!
Can it still work if I want to make it into a toggle? I got the toggle wings working but the puppet doesn't work.
It should still work.
Make sure the wings are in the right place in the heiarchy and have "is animated" ticked on the physbone.
Thank you so much for this!! I hope to see more vrchat tutorials in the future
I've definitely got a few planned
I've been looking for some good feathered wings for the Nardo for a while, these seem perfect!
Edit: just got them and, yes, they are perfect!!!!
Likewise!
I used Zairiza's gryphon wings for a long time, but wanted something more dynamic looking.
So I ended up learning Blender and made my own. ^_^
Could you make a video about Unique animals
Can you be more specific?
@@Neffertity Pigs, Rhinos, Elephants, Insects, Arachnids Amphibians, Primates stuff like that

Precisely
Just gonna echo what others have said and say thank you for putting the effort into this tutorial! Was super helpful getting the wings setup and needing to remake the animations!
I'm happy I could help!
4:24 Holy crap that caught me off guard, I thought it was my headphones
This was a great tutorial, and I got some other wings up and running on a Chibi Kobodal on the first attempt! Thank you so much!!!
all the anims are there but they are "missing" and id really like to not remake them all xd
Does it work wiht other wings or do i have to use them?
I do I make the wings toggle off and on?
How come this doesn't come with an FX layer or menus? I feel like that'd save a ton of time on setup.
Because this was the first vr asset I had ever made for sale and didn't know how to set any of that up in a prefab alone.
