  • Vocal Coach Reacts to Survivor | I Can't Hold Back | Jimi Jamison | Live | Ken Tamplin
Survivor is a band that to me is one of the unsung heroes of the 80s.
Part of what I get to do with these reactions is to share with you the music that has influenced me and Survivor is definitely one of those bands.
Though best known for their hit “Eye Of The Tiger”, the band put out so many other great songs.
The 80s were the most successful period for the band and they produced numerous singles that topped the charts in the US.
Jimi Jamison was made the frontman in 1984 after original lead singer Dave Bickler developed vocal fold nodules and had to have surgery. Throughout the band’s career, the two were swapped back and forth as lead singer.
For today’s reaction we’ll be looking at a live performance with Jamison as lead singer performing their hit “I Can’t Hold Back”.
I hope you enjoy the video and I encourage you to check out some more of their stuff.
Please make sure to let me know what you thought of the performance!
Also be sure to check out their song "The Search Is Over" here:

This is my FAVORITE Survivor song. The entire Vital Signs album is amazing. I could put this one album on repeat and for days and not get tired of it. Jimi had it all-looks, sweet Southern charm, and PIPES to match. I think he is one of my top 10 favorite voices of the 80s. Gone way too soon. He was still going strong without losing much up until his untimely death.
I don’t think he was an addict. I read that it could have been diet pills that may have interacted with an already compromised heart condition.
When I first saw this concert online I was convinced it was lip syncing! It’s so spot on with the album. I love Steve Perry, but I ADORE Jimi Jamison. It’s nice to be able to understand lyrics as they are sung because the singer is crisp and enunciates and still able to hold a note. Jimi had that talent.

  • @daveycmusic5150
    @daveycmusic5150 4 года назад +73

Read this very carefully. And accept this truth:
Jimi Jamison is the single most overlooked singer in rock history. He had just as much, if not more, power than the mighty Steve Perry, and others. Jimi, though, could do it all. Falsetto, grit, brassy, subtle. MONSTER. If you are offended because Ken said it sounds like Perry.... I think he's better. On MANY different levels.
They pigeonholed this band as an 80's soundtrack band, but Jimi, Jim Peterik, and Frankie Sullivan are all MONSTERS. ABSOLUTE MONSTERS.
And Ken, his voice isn't softer, its in control and placed exactly where he wanted it. Listen to the album Too Hot To Sleep. POWER. GRITTY, BALLS-OUT power. You are right that he had great tone. And great versatility. And range. And melodic sense.

Jimi is a powerhouse on Too Hot to Sleep. No frills hard rock album that arrived during the glam rock era, and did not fit in, did not chart well. After that album Jimi was offered the lead singer spot in Deep Purple but his management didn’t let him do it. However, Ron Nevison should take some credit in coaching Jimi how to sing his best.

Warm tones and pitch perfect. Jimi was also an absolutely outstanding showman. He had a phenomenal stage presence as well. Survivor post Eye the tiger circa 1982 offers some of the best melodic rock-pop you’ll ever hear from the early to mid-1980s. I am so pumped that you posted this you have absolutely no idea. Jimi Jamison is an absolute legend! Had the pleasure of meeting him once in 1995 and hanging out for a good 30 minutes or so. A total gentleman and super down to earth. It still bothers me to know that he is no longer physically with us

Ken, you have every right to be as nostalgic as you want. I’m going to be 52 years old in July and I’ve been singing for 45 years. That era from the early 1980s to me was the best music period everfor melodic rock. The music of my youth. Jimi Jamison is simply one of the best ever. You said it so eloquently. Perfect pitch, A wonderful range, and beautiful beautiful vocal tones. He was also an absolutely phenomenal showman, and one of the kindest most down to earth guys you would ever want to meet in the music business. It still breaks my heart that he is no longer physically here. Thank you so much for giving him the credit that he’s so well deserves as an amazing vocalist and performer. Please take a moment and watch this version of I can’t hold back from 1996 with Jimi’s solo band. These guys were all from Memphis Tennessee and we’re all really good studio musicians. I think you may really enjoy this because they rock the song out a little bit harder. Let me know what you think. ruclips.net/video/3xoMS3Q0aLg/видео.html

Please don’t say that we lost him to drugs. That was the sensationalistic news headline. He had a serious heart condition and that’s what ultimately took my friend away. He was certainly not a junkie.

I think it is important to be honest about it, and as a fan I'd like to think he would want it that way as a deterrent to others. KEN TAMPLIN,
JJ was truly respected in the music industry.
Not only did he have one of the greatest voices that could wipe the floor with some today,
but was known to be a kind and generous man who took the time to help others with music.
    God bless him.

They were great in concert. I thought they were not given the full recognition that they deserved. It's been a long time since I have listened to Survivor's music. I also had no idea that Jamie Jamison had passed, 5 yrs. ago. What a voice and what a loss. Great choice again Ken. Thank you

Hi Ken...just subscribed. I am 57 and was always familiar with Survivor but not Jimi Jamison. I was very familiar with Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury. But wow...Jimi is my personal favorite. I am learning more about him. Never saw these bands in the 80's....wish I had. Jimi should have received a lot more recognition. Your singing does not bother me whatsoever during videos. You seem like a really cool and talented dude.

Probably one of the finest AOR songs ever crafted from beginning to end that wasn’t performed by Foreigner or Journey. Really a shame that out of all your subscribers, only a handful are aware of how many terrific songs the band had back in the 80s. While a totally faceless band, they have the rare distinction of having two of the finest vocalists melodic rock has ever heard in Bickler and Jamison. A wonderful band with some brilliantly crafted songs from Peterik/Sullivan. Thank you for giving them some attention!

Dont apologize for comparing Jimi to Steve Perry ....... your right ! . I was in Panama City Beach Florida in 1994 and had the pleasure of seeing these guys live on a $5.00 pre tour show (basically a warm up tour to get into shape the up comming tour ).It was on a Sunday evening on the Spinnaker Beach Club stage . I must have accidentally gotten right in front of the band during this song . Any ways , Jimi extended the mic to me and I shared the heart of the song with him . Just a really talented and gracious guy !.

One thing that gets overlooked is as great as he is !
He did concerts until he passed .
I believe his last concert was 2 or 3 days before he passed away !
I believe he was arguably the best singer of his time !
I also gathered he was a humble down to earth guy .
He made time for his fans .
Being accessible to your fans is becoming more of a rarity these days !
What artists don't understand is if they don't have a fanbase they aren't relevant .

As Casey Kasem called Jimi Jamison "The Voice". Jimi had a beautiful tone to his voice, also powerful and range. If you haven't heard his version of an earlier Survivor song "Ever Since the World Began" you need to. Dave Bickler (also a great singer) sang the original version that appears on the album Eye of the Tiger. Jimi's version was on the end of the Stallone movie Lock Up, and it's a magical version. Also "Man Against the World" by Survivor is such an amazing vocal performance. Jimi simply was the best!

  • @Tbug666

His voice is truly one of the best. Especially for the 1980s. It brings chills when you hear a singer use so much emotion to his or her voice. Lyrics play a huge part too. When you have an average song and have a singer like Jimi singing it you have a great song! It was very sad that he passed away. If I could sing like him just for my own entertainment I would be forever happy. No one would even have to hear it but me. Unfortunately I do not have that range with so much power in the voice. When I read when people ask the question, who do you think is the greatest singer of these four people and give a list of such great vocalists it really upsets me because you cannot choose and that’s when you know you love music. To be honest even though he originally never sang The Eye of the Tiger I thought for sure it was Steve Perry and Journey. I even remember exactly where I was when I heard that song for the first time. I was fishing for catfish and it came over the radio around 2 AM. It was in the summer and there was a light fog. I was in a band then and our bass player was with me. I remember both of us stop talking because the voice just rang out perfectly. Later on I heard Jimi sing the song and it was equally as great if not better. OK I am rambling on but I too get very nostalgic when I hear great bands with great singers. I truly miss those days and sadly I know they will never come back.
