THIS Is Why FELIXSTOWE In Suffolk BLEW MY MIND!

- My first adventure in the county of Suffolk! We are back at the Great British seaside this week as I take you on a 4K walking tour of the seafront of Felixstowe! If you’re looking for a dog friendly resort with something to do for all the family, then this is the place to go.
Starting off at the picturesque seafront gardens that sit on cliffs just behind the beach. I make my way down the promenade, and on the way I pass numerous tourist attractions and things to see and do, which include the Spa Pavilion theatre and one of the big local landmarks Felixstowe Pier - recently reconstructed with a new building containing amusements, bowling and a cafe / bar. Of course I have to stop to get a beer in the September sunshine!
Walk with me as I check out what Felixstowe south has to offer, including Mannings Amusements and Beach Street, which used to be a fairground and now has arcades, mini golf, a market and shipping containers that have been converted into independent shops, street food and cafes.
Finally, I explore the Landguard Nature Reserve and Port of Felixstowe - the UK’s LARGEST container port - tourists travel from miles around to watch ships pass through the Harwich harbour. There’s even the Landguard fort attraction which was sadly closed when I visited.
Perfect for a daytrip from London, couples break, solo trip or a family holiday, come and see why this spectacular town is one of the best places to visit in Suffolk whatever the weather!
If you don’t know me already, I’m Jack and I’m exploring the UK, making travel vlogs as I go. I’d be so grateful for your support, so please do like the video, leave a comment and subscribe to the channel!

@@jackryanmiller As an Ipswich fan I'd recommend North Norfolk,😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😖
I've lived here since 1994 and I've always had a soft spot for Felixstowe, despite many locals shouting it down.
The ISO container part is called Beach Street. It was built around 5-6 years ago as the town was starting to look really tired. But fair play, they've invested a lot into the place and it's looking fresh again.
Glad you enjoyed your visit 👍
Thanks a lot, I feel like it would be such a great place to live. Beach street definitely one of my favourite parts, would love to spend a bit longer there
I'm not sure if you're genuine or being sarcastic. But Felixstowe is my home town. there since 1968 until 2017, now live in Ipswich but work in Felixstowe.
It is a lovely town and now it's being invested in a lot now. In the summer time in the 80's it was the best place, so many memories living, playing, working there. But, then investment died for 25 odd years and it wasn't an enjoyable place to be.
But now, with the new pier, Beach street, the mini 'eye', tge Spa gardens (my playground in the 70s) and the gardens by the town hall it's just becoming an up & coming town now... I LOVE my hometown, Felixstowe. ❤❤❤
Thanks for your comment but I’m not sure why you would think I was being sarcastic, my whole channel is based on appreciating different seaside towns
I live opposite Derby Rd train station in Ipswich which is a 2 stop 10 minute journey to Felixstowe, me the Mrs, daughter and dog regularly make the journey on the weekend in the summer, nice walk along the beach then sink a few pints and grab some food at beach street 👌 Also have lots of fond memories crabbing at Old Felixstowe as a child, my mum has a beach hut in old Felixstowe that we can use, cost her a few hundred quid 30 years ago now its worth nearer to 20 grand! People from Ipswich used to take the piss out of Felixstowe for being a run down seaside town but its really been turned around over the last decade, great video 👍🏻
Ah cheers Ian it’s good to hear from someone who is a regular visitor and that’s so convenient living only a 10 min train journey away. Definitely one of the best seaside places I’ve been this year 👍
Possibly my favourite place on earth. I think you would have loved 'Felixstowe Ferry' beyond the golf course and also 'Old Felixstowe' where you would find 'Fludyers' - my favourite place to eat, both to the left of your starting point as you look at the sea. Hope to retire there one day, maybe have a beach hut too.
Thanks very much for the recommendations, definitely next time 😄
Your welcome anytime❤
Mine too! ❤❤❤❤😊
Another great video thanks Jack!
I'm from Cambridge, so less than an hour for me. I'll definitely go at some point after seeing this. 🙂
Ah thanks a lot I’m glad to hear it! I really didn’t have high expectations so was thoroughly surprised 👍
Thanks for showing us Felixstowe! I was surprised by the gardens. Keep up the good work! Happy travels! 👍 😊🙏
Thank you Sandra!
Love Felixstowe it’s amazing. ❤❤
Yes! I really loved it 😄
Felixstowe my home, your video made it look lovely so thank you. We do get seals occasionally. Harwich is pronounced Ha Rich ( silent w) lol,, not many know that !. I started coming here 14 years ago, moved here 12 years ago to marry a local, never looked back
Thanks Celia for the lovely comment. Ha ha a few people have pointed out the Harwich mispronouncing now , how embarrassing 😄
Alba Chiara - excellent Italian restaurant just near the Town Hall.
Great video, my home town for the last 6 years. Feels like a holiday every day.
Thanks very much James, looks a fantastic place to live
Thank you for enjoying our little town, we do see seals. It’s a great place to live we feel so lucky we found it. Come back soon and if you need a local to show you around I’m sure lots of people would offer xxx
Thanks so much I really appreciate that, will be back for some seal 🦭 spotting soon 😄
I spent most of my summer on Old Felixstowe Beach. So peaceful and beautiful. Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks so much. Very sad to have missed seeing Old Felixstowe
I saw Felixstowe when I was in Harwich. After Manningtree the Essex/Suffolk border is. Good stuff, I love your humbleness in your videos.
Thanks very much, much appreciated as always
You missed old Felixstowe where there's the Ferry Boat Inn, a cafe, a golf course, a couple of martello towers, a view across to Bawdsey and Bawdsey manor and more. Also, you could've included Cobbold's Point and Jacob's Ladder. Next time maybe, as there is enough for another visit and video.
Thanks very much, I definitely had it in mind next year to do the part 2 of Felixstowe! Looks fantastic
Such a great review I moved to Felixstow about 20 years ago from South London best movie ever
Ah nice one Greg I am very glad to hear it, thanks
Was there on Sunday with the family for a walk and a bag of chips, lovely place to visit
Love it. Hope the weather was a bit better than it has been where I live this week !
@@jackryanmiller actually Jack it was about 8 degrees which I know sounds chilly, but we had hats and gloves on, the sun was out and as you saw the views are beautiful. There were loads of families with dogs doing similar walks to us as well. We enjoy going there out of season as well as in season.
You definitely got the best coffee from The Alex, they also do nice lunches there.
The beach street shipping container area that you walked around is absolutely packed with people in summer. It’s a great atmosphere when the DJ’s are on.
Glad you enjoyed Suffolk.
Just discovered the channel by chance. Love it! Subscrbed. I love the old fashioned seaside. It's so nice to see "nornal" reviews. So many youtubers concntrate on having a downer on these places, and focussing only on their decline. Yours are realy enjoyable and balanced walk throughs. Plus, I always like to know facilities are on hand!
That is so kind of you to say, thanks a lot. I love seaside towns and how each one is different, I especially like ones that are completed deserted! Thanks for subscribing too 😄
Felixstowe. I live in Ipswich and love coming to Felixstowe for nice walks.
Good video, 😊
Thank you !!
Thanks Jack! A really good documentary 👍. I live just across the bay in Essex, so I've visited Felixstowe many times. My sister stayed in the Marlborough Hotel about 6 years ago, it was pretty old-fashioned, and would have cost thousands to modernise, so probably why it closed.
The Martello Tower (built in the Napoleonic era) you walked past is now a National Coastwatch Institution lookout, manned by volunteers.
Thanks a lot I really appreciate that and thanks for the info. Particularly surprised about the Marlborough being open 6 years ago! It looks like it’s been closed at least a decade! Such a shame 😖
@@jackryanmiller Yep, that was June 2018. They were taking coach parties on 7-day stays, probably just to survive a bit longer...
Hi Jack loved your Video been here twice in the last 2 years very underrated place Felixstowe everybody just thinks its the Docks and that is it lovely beach great for the Kids as you said the Gardens are lovely and well kept if you want a cheap meal, good beer sky football and music entertainment etc check out the Grovesnor Pub massive place inside and outside and the staff are so welcomeing👍definitely recommend the Nachos... Didn't have time to go to the Docks area my only Moan would be please sort the pier out so you can walk down it....
Thanks for your comment Ian, I was exactly the same I just imagined it to be the docks but was very pleasantly surprised. Will defo check out the Grosvenor pub next time it sounds great 👍
I used to live there right by the swimming pool / sea front! Absolutely beautiful town, hope you checkout languard fort too. My family are east anglians and every summer we'd trip up to felixstowe or aldeburgh! So many amazing beaches we have were very lucky. Beautiful vid btw! I'm now a subscriber
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. Honestly I’d love to live in a place like this, I’m envious that you used to!
You missed ‘See You “ cafe just after beach street…it’s absolutely lovely..they benefit from not allowing you in again at the fort..as its free to walk into ‘see you’ cafe..the service and food and ambience is great at see you.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Felixstowe definitely has a charm. I would love to live there.
Same here !
My home town, when I do come back and visit my folks it’s nostalgic but I appreciate it more now than I did when I was younger…
You should have started up by the Ferry in old Felixstowe
Love it. Yeh I’m gutted I missed out on Old Felixstowe but more reason to return!
Great place Suffolk. Beautiful countryside.
Love it, I need to check out more of Suffolk including the country
thanks its amazing my sister lives in hastings
Very nice, Hastings is a great town too
I've lived in Felixstowe for 13 year and have never been disappointed with the town. Highly recommend visiting. I know the gold for fish and chips in Felixstowe. Hamilton Fish and Chips. although it's a bit of a walk from the beach but still amazing. Such a shame Landgaurd Fort was closed, amazing place.
Thanks a lot, and for the recommendation, I’ll defo check that out next time
Harwich - Ha-Ridge. Nice video.
Thanks mate. Ha ha one day I’ll pronounce it right 🫢
I was in Landguard Fort & the museum next door last weekend, it's well worth a visit. Felixstowe is lovely though, I've seen seals at the other end, Old Felixstowe/the ferry end, and the alarms you can hear are the crane gantrying at the port, where I work
Very nice, thanks a lot. Need to get down to old Felixstowe next time definitely
Another Cracking video as they normally are.
Say Jack do you fly the Drone or is it your Lovely Lady?
What sort of Sider is it, it’s a Scary Spider that’s what is is 😱😮
Ah cheers Andrew much appreciated! It is me that flies the drone 😂I usually carry it with me and can fly it when not too many people are around 👍
You have to visit Old Felixstowe, a real treat
I'm lucky enough to live in Suffolk, its a lovely county with lots of places to explore, Felixstowe is only about 15 minutes down the road for me so i visit often. Also the Beach Street container area with the shops etc has loads of choice for excellent food, Big Bro Bao, Four Three Pizza etc.
Thanks very much Daniel I’ll be sure to check out plenty more places in Suffolk in due course 😄
Next time I would advice you to go to the top of the garden. There is a nice footpath along the sea with nice views from the top of the gardens. I've been there 2 days ago. Nice views.
That’s great thanks, I’ll do that next time
The docks are built on the old RAF Felexstowe which was a flying boat station. But you really should go to Old Felexstowe it really is lovely
Thanks Jayne, I’m thinking in the new year to do a separate video on Old Felixstowe it looks great
Nice to see ppl appreciate Felixstowe, gets roped into the "small seaside town, nothing to do" but I had a great time growing up here, but being here 30+ years I've still not been IN landguard fort 😅.
@@jomega_gaming right that’s it’s I’m going to plan an outing 🤣
@@kayleighalden-hollinsworth6393 if you go for Halloween scary thing.... I'll go. Lol.
Thanks mate, to be honest I would have loved growing up here !
Love felixstow was there on Friday lovely day the wool ba in town cheese scones yummy try and get down much as possible live in newmarket can do it in 50 minutes love it
Ah I need to go into the proper town then next time, cheers
Hi
couple things its
Har wich and the sirens that were going off is when the massive trains go across the crossing on the main road
I have never been to Felixstown it looks lovely.
I hadn’t been before but loved it! Quite a drive though 🙂↕️
Enjoyed watching Felixstowe. Come to Gorleston where they filmed Yesterday. You can use our beach hut for the day with pleasure.
That sounds great, I did want to come Gorleston in the summer but ran out of time, definitely next year though. Thanks a lot
My parents live in Ipswich so when I visit I usually end up in Felixstowe for a walk. I usually go to the Old Felixstowe Ferry part, and the area around Landguard Fort next to the container port, watching the massive ships 👍
Love it. I missed Old Felixstowe so will definitely be checking that out soon. The whole Landguard Fort bit was just insane
The spider was a false widow we get loads in Felixstowe. I moved to Felixstowe 9 years ago and love it and I am now raising a family here 🥰
Wow a false widow id usually be terrified but it actually looked quite cuddly 🤪thanks a lot, it looks a great place to live
Loads of cool ppl live there too. 😏
@@jackryanmiller they do give a nasty bite 🙈
@@jomega_gaming they certainly do 😂
I think you will find that is an Orb Weaver spider, False Widows are normally found inside buildings but they do look similar
Sshhh! I don't want everyone knowing how great my home town is! Only joking. Pleased you liked it. I've seen seals there. Best pub in town? Probably the Alex that you went to. My favourite pub is The Mariners in Trimley St Mary, just outside Felixstowe.
Ha ha.Thanks very much Craig. Sad I only got a coffee at The Alex and not a refreshing beer.
I love The Dooley pub
You should have started your walk up by the fluder hotel as the beach is a delight and beach huts are on stilts on the beach then more gardens then the Spa.
Thanks a lot, noted for next time 😊
Best pub is at Felixstowe Ferry and is the Ferry Boat Inn
Thanks, I’ll be making sure I visit there next time
Great video, the UK has so many lovely places. You didn't go swimming!!
Thanks Samantha, I did jump in the sea at the end but didn’t film it 🤪
Used to go there on holiday in the late 70s early 80s. The fort and towers were abandoned, and you could just climb in and look round. The days before health and safety.
Ha ha I would absolutely love that , I was thinking there were lots of cool areas that were fenced off. Would like to properly explore
You should should head the other way on the prom and head towards the Golf course via "Old Felixstowe" on your next trip here.
Will definitely do that next time, I’m gutted I missed it ! Cheers
It's beautiful there
It really is 🤩
It’s funny listening to someone who has never been there getting excited about it. Yes lots of seals off there.
Glad you liked the place.
By the way, Harwich is pronounced Harrich. You drop the w.
Ha ha yep indeed, compared to where I live the place is paradise 😄😄
@@jackryanmiller Can’t be any worse than Plaistow, surely ☹️
@@Yodaspirit45 ha ha I used to pass Plaistow every day on the tube on the district line, never got off there though 😅
This is about a 20 minute drive from me, or 45 minutes on regular buses. Trains hourly even too. Beach Street is great. May look to retire here one day.
I can see exactly why you might want to retire here, really great place
Also, Felixstowe is one of the cheapest places to park. If you get there early there's plenty of free spaces on Sea road, along the main road running from the Leasure centre to Mannings. Also, Manning in the 60s, 70s and 80's was brilliant fun, not much left to it now unfortunately.
I would’ve loved to see Mannings in the old days when it had the fairground there!
I haven't been to Felixstowe for about 40 years! People kind of forget there's an actual town behind the massive port. Harwich and Dovercourt take note, this is how to do seaside gardens. I wonder if they still do the Harwich to Felixstowe ferry. It was "The Brightlingsea" ferry for many years.
Thanks for your comment, I didn’t realise it was an actual town / seaside which was why I was so pleasantly surprised! There definitely still is a ferry over to Harwich 😄
@Charlie_Duz I went on the little yellow ferry from harwich to Stowe return last summer, great to get that close to the container ships. It also goes to Shotley too. Harwich despite it's history, really is a disappointing place to visit. Dovercourt a bit better thanks to its lovely beach. The Brightlingsea ferry still runs, although with a limited timetable and I believe it just goes across to Mersea
@@elizabethwright6726 The old ferry that ran from the former Dock Basin was called the Brightlingsea. Not sure of her present state, but the was stripped back to her skeleton several years ago to rebuild her to a seaworthy condition. The present vessel is tiny. Brightlingsea could carry 120 passengers, and did river cruises in the evenings.
Great video! I live in Ipswich. BTW FYI, 'Harwich' is pronounced 'Harritch'.
Cheers! 👋
'The Fish Dish' restaurant is 10/10 . . . Or at least it was a few years ago :)
I’ll give it a go next time, cheers 😄
We now have La Vida showbar, at Mannings Amusement Park, which was voted Best bar in Suffolk and Cambs in 2023 Always a great night out .
Oooh that sounds great, I’ll have to check that out
You should visit for carnival day 🎉😊
I’ll definitely try 😃
If you go up the bank youre immediately into the high street which is lovely…people push cats around in carts it’s very funny..
Actually I saw someone on the seafront with a cat in a pram!! That’s amazing
Never been here. Sea front was great. You need to make some sand castle’s.
Ha ha I would’ve if I stayed a bit longer 🤪
Hello, great video. You must go to Harwich port.
Cheers Tom, will definitely plan a visit there soon
Enjoyed the video, however you missed Old Felixstowe and Felixstowe Ferry at the other end. Another video perhaps?
Thanks a lot, very sad to have missed Old Felixstowe, so I think another video is in order!
We’ll look out for it.
We are actually spending the day there tomorrow - love it and hope to relocate there next year
Harwich? its pronounced like harridge. Felixstowe has vastly improved over the past few years and Beach street (behind Mannings) is , as you say worth visiting. I live in Ipswich and used to dread going to felixstowe because it was such a dive but now its lovely.
Many thanks, I really did appreciate Beach street, would love to see it on the market day
@@jackryanmiller Far better when it was the funfair. Sadly cheap foreign holidays killed it. Used to run extra trains to the Beach station in the 60s, place was packed on hot weekends. Miss those times. Girls in mini skirts, and my first car. Guaranteed to pull.
The pier i believe is owned by the same people that own Wellington pier in Great Yarmouth
That would explain why it felt very similar 😄
I've been there a few times never liked it you made it look nice
Aha thank you
Alba Chiara - excellent Italian restaurant not far from pier.
Thank you very much for the recommendation
Land guard fort is well worth a visit…the first time is great…but i wouldnt want to pay for another visit…i would take free visits after the first definitely….it would keep the felicities afloat souvenir shop cafe etc…but i dont think they would understand somebody not paying again..
Thanks, surprisingly they were closed when I visited but I realise it was within their advertised ‘open’ hours!
Harwich is pronounced, ha-ridge
Yes indeed
What’s the intro music?
It’s called Skylines but it’s part of the RUclips free audio library so not sure you’ll be able to find it outside of RUclips 😊
Europes largest port
Yes indeed 👍
You would have liked old felixstowe
Definitely, it sounds great. Next time 👍
You've definitely cherry picked the Felixstowe views.( I'm Ipswich,so fifteen minutes away.) It's not the best place in Suffolk, but it's nicer than my town!
Thanks, I’m sure like with most seaside towns it’s not all rainbows but I still loved what I saw, will check out more of Suffolk asap 😄
Anywhere is nicer than Ipswich! 😂
I live just outside Ipswich and I agree it's a dump. Felixstowe is partly dump so it wins.
The w in Harwich is silent. It's pronounced Ha-rich. Otherwise, good work.
Cheers 👍
😂😂😂😂😂
I live in Suffolk just 10 miles from Felixstowe, but please don't tell anyone about this place, it's our secret.
Ha ha yes indeed
Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and The Stones played at the Spa back in the day!
That’s amazing
You sure about that? They played Ipswich Gaumont, but not the Spa. Used to get top groups at the old Pier Pavillion. Lived here since '56. Beach used to be better before they dumped all that rock to counteract the erosion caused by dredging deep water for the Docks. You could walk from the Ferry to Landguard point and never set foot on the Prom. Once a very low tide, you could walk around the end of the Pier, though you would get your feet wet. Only ever saw it like that one time. It's not so great on a wet mid winter's day. Everywhere shut by 6pm.
It’s pronounced Ha-ridge!
Yes I wasn’t familiar with the place before filming this!
Don't know why but Harwich is pronounced Harich silent w
Oh yeh a few people have said that! I might carry on calling it Har-witch deliberately 🤣
Nothing wrong with Felixstowe, but don't you think you hyped it up a little bit too much? A prophet is not without honour save in his own country! (I mean myself, running it down a little).
Aha compared to where I live this place is a paradise
Correctly pronouncing Harwich.
Ah I wasn’t familiar with it before I made the video!
@@jackryanmiller Its fine. I live near there and pronounce it like you because thats how its spelt! lol
@@MrPhilpalmer4 ha ha love it
For someone who has never left the British Isles, Felixstowe may appeal. But let's be honest. Rocky beaches. Closed and falling apart pier. Water never clear. Only old people around. This nature reserve is so, hehe, not very pretty. Not worth going as a tourist unless you are 60+ years old.
Thanks for your comment
That’s a bit harsh!!
Absolutely great video! Thoroughly loved watching it! Hello from a local! 😀👋🏼
@@sarahbenn3576 thanks so much Sarah!
Good plan. Stick with Benidorm mate.😂
Great stuff Jack. A complete presentation. Felixstowe really is a lovely place. From Felixstowe you can see the smallest Country in the world. You caught it out on the horizon at 13:36 ruclips.net/user/shortsaF2l1DJU8Zo?si=Fq8vRz7SNf88KLVw
Ah thanks a lot, I had no idea!
