Probably my favourite walk if ,2024, best till last! I think it's important not to take the politics out of Fisher's work. The promised future is stolen from us by neoliberalisms rebalancing of the economy taking from the less wealthy and giving to the very rich. In Capitalist Realism he posits this stolen future as a contributing factor in contemporary mental health problems. Capitalism is the problem and culture is how Fisher traces the damage. Bifo Beradi is a good thinker to read on this too. Sorry for the splurge. Top walk John.
I have been coming to terms with grief recently having lost two of my closest friends from my time in the Army to suicide in a very short period of time between them. Your videos are always a beautiful way to lose myself for an hour or so and this one has been no different. Thank you for putting so much care and belief into them. I hope to one day make the trip east across the Atlantic to see some of the places you show us in person. I feel closer to them than places ten minutes down the road from me.
Another gem, living near the sea I often walk along the front seeing a three year old me running along now middle sixties with a stick plodding along.the sea never changes only the land and life.stay safe.
There's nothing like a coastal walk, especially in winter. I loved the glitter of the pale sun on the sea near the start of the walk & the beautiful, pale sunset at the end. A beautiful walk, thank you.
I am watching with my 92 year old mother. Our winter drink of choice is also eggnog, but spiced up with Disaronno liqueur. ( rum is great with boiling water, butter and a teaspoon of dark brown sugar). I’m waiting for mom to tuck into the holiday fruitcake, (another favourite thing this time of year. )
If you go to Shotley Peninsula the view is quite surreal.....looking inland you see the Suffolk Country side but look the other way and the massive industry of Felixstowe container port is at complete odds to the countryside!
A great walk, even if you didn't go as far as you intended to. My Father-in-Law lives near Harwich and on visits there I just love sitting on the seafront and watching Felixstowe, the huge ships off/onloading their cargo. Thinking of the logistics of it is mind boggling. I've read Merlin Coverley's book on Hauntology after discovering the "Scarfolk" book. I consider it as a sort of very aggressive nostalgia that refuses to lie down and die. Revenant pop culture from a forgotten future.
Lovely! Suffolk is indeed beautiful, and this augers well for the rest of the walk. In my view, Herzog is a genius. In fact he describes himself principally as a writer, and in filmic terms as a documentary maker, but for those unfamiliar with his films I recommend 'Aguire The Wrath Of God' and the 1979 classic 'Nosferatu The Vampyre', which is Herzog's attempt to rehabilitate the German film making tradition, as it's partly modelled on Murnau's 1920s (unsure of date here) classic. There certainly is something other worldly about the huge container port, but I'm sure there are loads of perfectly normal folks in there, who are every bit as desperate for a decent coffee as WE sometimes are. Nice one John! 🌟👍
Fantastic video, I always enjoy your breakout walks to the coast. I’d be lost without the sea on my doorstep! A personal observation, I pass the cranes at Tilbury docks in the distance quite often, and I always imagine them as giant metallic dinosaurs with their necks reaching up and surveying the landscape!
Christmas came early 😊 love this walk and so glad you got to the station on time! The ferry from Old Felixstowe to Bawdsey is stunning in good summer weather. Once you get to the other side you have the Radar Museum as well as the huge mansion built by the Quilters. If you wait for low tide it is possible to walk from the Bawdsey Ferry point along the beach front to the Martello towers at East Lane - a bizarre landscape of approx 1.5 miles which is littered with rusting military defences of all kinds. If you get that far it’s only a couple of miles to Shingle Street an enigma with its shifting stone dunes and swimming lagoon that makes you feel as though you’re walking on the moon 🌑 well worth a look. Anyway, thank you again for the wonderful video , already looking forward to the next one 😎
Awwwww this brought back some memories. I cycled from Sutton Ho to Felixstowe and on to Landguard and across on the ferry to Shotley and beyond!! A beautiful ride ❤ Thank you for sharing xx
. Werner Herzog film, My Best Fiend, is one I have lined up to look at. Very pleased to see many of your signature portraits of buildings here, the nearly amber colouring of white plaster, and held ocean waves.
Brilliant video John! I was so excited to see you in my neck of the woods. If you are returning to Suffolk, you might like to walk the Shotley Peninsula. River walks, farm walks, historic churches and interesting pubs.
I was a bit worried about your knee when I didn’t see a video posted, but decided to check one more time at 7pm (Texas time) and there you are! And a 45-min gift at that!!! We were all excited and sat to watch it together. A John Rogers Classic! Thanks for treating us this week with a brilliant walk. I’m going to watch it again tomorrow. Thanks, John.
Nice walk. I spent a year living on the north side of Woodbridge in... 2001. I was on the west side of the Deben, opposite Sutton Hoo (which is on the east side of the river) as well.
@@JohnRogersWalks Indeed it is. You should do a walk from the village of Woodbridge up to the RAF base of the same name and RAF Bentwaters (or even in the reverse direction come to think about it) to speculate about the UFO event that happened there. Also Orford Ness and the research station up there where its desolate and mysterious.
You do the walking and we get to enjoy it! Thank you and it is amazing the knee is coming back so fast. There are always unique tidbits of literal and natural curiosity to ponder and go back over.
Lovely to see some of my fellow New Zealanders along the water front in Felixstowe (Torbay Palms - otherwise known as the NZ Cabbage Tree/Cordyline Australis). Another great walk, John, and a lovely day for it..
Incredible indeed. Thanks John. A little longer than the usual RUclips movie I’d watch, but loved every minute. Walked from Manningtree to Harwich a couple of years back but I’ve never been to Felixstowe, other than to catch a cross channel ferry back in the day. Vague plans for a walk involving train to Harwich then ferry to Shotley, and walk to Ipswich along south bank of Orwell. Butt and Oyster pub looks vaguely interesting.
Enjoyed the walk, I never imagined Felixstowe quite like that. It looks a decent town, hotel looked very inviting. I have memories with my family hiring out beach huts on various holidays, the local councils owned them mostly. I have vivid memories of the kettle boiling on a primus stove.
Wow...John! Just watched the Felixstowe walk and I have say "thank-you" SO MUCH...for bringing back such wonderful memories for me! I've done with of those walks myself about ten years ago, both ways from the pier...towards Languard...and also towards the ferry...and I just love it there. The cliffside gardens, going the other way towards the Deben Ferry are really lovely, and there's a great little coffee and cake stop along there too! Now I'm living down in Ramsgate (which I'm not too keen on tbh...yes...I know your Sis loves it down here, but I miss Essex and Suffolk...the flatness and "bleak beauty"), I know I will almost certainly never again get to visit the places in Essex and Suffolk that I loved going to when I lived in Pitsea...its just too far now. But...boy...what a JOY that video was! It had everything that I love and have enjoyed doing for over 40 years...walking in bleak and beautiful landscapes, walking along "faded glory" seafronts (that many people seem to have forgotten existed), retrospective historiographical tales of "futures lost", of and musing over the symbolic, metaphysical, and literally, meaning of it all. What's it all about Alfie??? Just...being in the moment I think. A PERFECT video! I have SO MANY other suggestions for similar walks if you're interested John?..that combine all of those elements...in Kent, Essex, Sussex, and Suffolk...particularly Mersea Island, the Isle of Sheppey, Canvey Island (can you see a "theme" here? 🤣)...and Osea and Northey Islands. Thanks again John...that was a real JOY...the day after having a tooth pulled put and feeling a bit rough! And...don't forget...I've had THREE knee replacements (after 40 years of walking, hiking, and cycling)...so I can give you some advice about knees TOO...should you ever need it? 🤣 Next time you're down here seeing your sister...we could meet up down "Spoons" for a pint a natter if you fancy it.
This is wonderful and I’m only 20 minutes into it. The North Sea is so magical at sun rise, we scattered my parents ashes at Southwold one summer’s morning at 4:30 a few years ago. They lived in that area in their twilight years, I have had some lovely times on the East Anglian coast. Keep op the good work.
Great video John. My PhD dissertation (back in 2005) was entitled ‘An Aesthetics of Hauntology’ and addresses Derrida’s use of the term (one of the chapters was on Tarkovsky’s ‘Stalker’). I enjoyed Mark Fisher’s books and love the recording, ‘On Vanishing Land’ which is a recording of Fisher and a friend walking and talking on that very coastline. It’s a great recording if you can get hold of it. Also love a bit of M.R. James - particularly, ‘A Warning to the Curious’ which is also set in that part of the world.. The Herzog book sounds great!
Thanks Mark. ‘On Vanishing Land’ was the original walk I wanted to repeat but scuppered by the non-running ferry - should’ve done it in September when I had the idea. However it’s there for the Spring. And next time I’ll watch the M.R James in the Orwell
I live in West Suffolk and Felixstowe is my go to summer; beach day trip! It's such an underrated place, the sea front and gardens, old Felixstowe at one end and the docks and languard Fort at the other!
Beautiful. Thanks for a grand Sunday walk. Watching from Canada, I’m constantly envious of the rail system there: it’s utterly impossible in most parts of my country to do a walk like this, a distance from any city, without relying on a car
Another wonder walk and I must say my favorites are the coastal walks. Nice mention of MR James and that wonderful ghost story. Reminds me of Christmas at my grandparents cottage in Norfolk.
You're in for a real treat when you do the Deben walk. You could pop in and see my aunty in Waldringfield. She knows ALL the best footpaths around those parts,
An amazing video. I spend a week in Felixstowe with my family every year. My family and I always treat ourselves to fish & chips at the Regal restaurant (as seen in the video). When we visited the museum earlier this year, we discovered that the writer Henry Williamson (of Tarka the Otter fame) was garrisoned at Landguard, Felixstowe during WWI. Coincidentally, he grew up just around the corner from where we live in Lewisham, South East London and there's a brown plaque on the front of his former home. The staff at the museum couldn't believe it when I told them. We were told by a local resident, three years ago, that Benny Hill used to stay in Felixstowe at weekends because his disabled sister lived there and he was her part-time carer. He was regularly seen pushing her along in her wheelchair along the seafront. The local resident said it was Benny Hill's "girlfriend", but I looked it up online and found out it was his sister (according to a local history site).
brilliant walk today, john - thanks for taking us along. i've finished your first book, and i certainly enjoyed it! i'm on to the second title, cheers! ps - i've just recently watched the hordern-acted adaptation of the james short story - spooky stuff, that!
Another excellent video and interesting. It looks a nice place to explore. I must say that watching your videos has a very calming effect on me. It's almost as if we're walking along with you. I look forward to your next video as always. I have at last got a copy of you're book 'This Other London' which was very interesting.
Yes, what an amazing walk ! I think that you’ve succeeded in rending all the beauty, the difficulty, the uniqueness of both the environment and the walk. Also, I like the way your thoughts are never intruders, on the contrary they match very well with what we see.
Thank you John. I have no idea why i do not know about Mark Fisher (his books and thinking). Thank you so much for introducing him. ❤️. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.
I started watching your videos because I was born and lived in Leyton in my early years and enjoyed your walks in that area. But it was a nice surprise to see you doing a walk in the area that I now live. The Orwell and Stour Valleys are a real favourite of mine. 🙂🙂🥾🥾
Love this! My home county and my favourite place to go ❤ Felixstowe, ate many chips in the Victorian shelter by the big house. There is so much to discover on the Suffolk Coast. But shhh don’t tell everyone.
Just watching this a second time , it's wonderful , I think it's one of your best films , it has a beautiful atmosphere , it is definitely hauntology and edge lands , I love that it's the result of a impulse which took you from Stratford to Felixstowe and that you had to adapt your original idea , also that it took longer to walk than you thought it would so you never reached Ipswich and there was this element of jeopardy towards the end , the shots of the sea crashing on the shore and the ethereal estuary are sublime , those vast cranes of the container port are truly overwhelming in their size , just like Martian Fighting Machines , thank you for taking us upon such a profound journey , a philosophical musing on life the universe and everything , see you again soon 🌈🙏💞
Hi John this is a great walk, one that my wife and I have done once and 50% of once. (I have been involved in importing containers from the Far East for many years) When you were at Landguard; you mentioned you fancied a coffee- there is a good cafe next to container port where you can get a hot drink and wholesome food and then sit and watch the unloading of the ships, Did you know some of these ships are 400 metres long and can carry over 20, 000 containers. Felixstowe is a charming and fascinating town/resort that still has that tangible feeling of its lingering past. (My take on hauntology). Like you, my wife and intend to walk more of the Suffolk coastal path, particularly taking in the Deben ferry. We will do this in summer as you definitely needs the daylight hours to fully enjoy the delights of this area.
(Was trying to get my head around being 'haunted by the future'... is it a deliberate oxymoron? Isnt it being haunted by memories of what we wrongly thought the future would look like? So it's still being haunted by the PAST?? All your videos are great John, but I especially love the video walks in North Essex by the sea. Great to 'get out of London' when watching you... the blue light and low sun in that flat sea - top cinematography John 🌅 Felixstowe was the most depressing seafront I'd ever walked down, but that blend of the ambient with the railway crossing(?) siren at 16:42😌👌)
Read some of Mark Fisher's texts or listen to his lectures on youtube and you'll get it. It's really a call to action; to change everything. For eg, consider the difference between Labour's vision of the future drawn together by the various people working on The Corbyn Project's 2017 Manifesto (unrealised plans that haunt the future) Vs Starmer's reiteration of Thatcherism's T.I.N.A.
I probably didn't do a great job of explaining that aspect of it Alex - this video here is good breakdown of the concept and its origins ruclips.net/video/gSvUqhZcbVg/видео.htmlsi=4pq6JpvmNHPtSr0N I definitely need to get out of London more often. Thanks for the kind words
@@JohnRogersWalks that was a brilliant video John - I think the penny has dropped. Explains why I love the Caretaker"s 'Everywhere at the End of Time', Al Bowlly, and watching replays of Ch4 closedowns turning into 4tel.👍
What beautiful views of the beach. Such heavy haunting thoughts~ to ponder. Loved this walk. Thank you John Rogers. Blessings from (East) Tennessee.🙏🙂🙋
John! The romance of it all. Today I bought at our local british expat shop cider, crumpets, brandy butter and a nice piece of leister cheese. I miss England.
Hi John, I really enjoyed this video - I like to read the British Library collections of Tales of the Weird this time of year and this video really hit the mark for me. I'm reading Into the London Fog - atmospheric Victorian ghost stories. As a keen walker, I've not walked this stretch of coast and I'll definitely be staying at the hotel you stayed the night at. Very MR James. Thankyou. I found this film very relaxing and meditative as always. Btw, I always enjoy the music you put to your videos. you're a legend mate. Thanks.
Wow. Fabulous walk and really great photography as always. Shipping ports for me are haunted by season 2 of The Wire (about the Baltimore dockworkers unions and gangsters). Definitely have a nostalgia for the future of film-making promised by that incredible series but arguably not delivered. Thanks for curing me of my obsessive need to get the horizon exactly horizontal in landscape photos. Im actually enjoying sliding off the world in yours now. Erm. I will not hear a word against Sebald especially one that doesn't exist. 🙉
Really enjoyed the video. So much so that I was inspired to seek out a copy of the Sebald book at my local library here in Plano, TX, USA. Sure enough a copy was available for borrow, with an unbroken spine no less, so I'm probably the first to borrow. Start reading today. Thank you for the recommendation 🙂
Such an interesting walk, I've known the Orwell for over 40 years but never Trimley Marsh. Apparently Felixstowe docks are under threat from DP world Corringham, London Gateway Stanford - Le -Hope. That could change massively Felixstowe's operations.
This just popped up on my RUclips feed I think because it knew you walked past my house! I live next to the big pile of hey bails. I’m a photographer by trade and I have made a lot of work on the Suffolk landscape which echos a lot of the sentiments here. Let me know if you walk the Ipswich to Trimley route (well worth it) and I’ll happily make you a coffee!
Decided to save this video to watch on Monday evening. Safe to say I wasn’t disappointed. A perfect accompaniment to have with dinner. I’ve a feeling you’ll be heading toward Framlingham in the near future (Detectorist country).
Thanks GPhunk - I really need to make getting to Framlingham a priority this summer. I'm tempted to stay at Roger Deakin's Walnut Tree Farm when I make the trip
Southwold is, indeed, rather beautiful. To sup a pint of their local brew is a great pleasure. My wife and I visited a few years ago and stayed at one of the hotels there. What a lovely spot, and the breakfast was delicious.
That was another Epic walk! I think your next book should be a few epic walks such as this, exploring, as you do as you go, the layers of history, the philosophies, the wildlife and the details of each place. There is a trend in your epic walks that is so engaging. This video was so beautifully shot and how did you get the perfect weather day? I will be watching this over and over!

The local resident said it was Benny Hill's "girlfriend", but I looked it up online and found out it was his sister (according to a local history site).
What a bleakly beautiful landscape, thanks for another great video, John. And for explaining the interesting concept of Hauntology.
What a treat; so enjoyed this John. Thank you very much!
Absolutely beautiful.
Wow loved that video. Loved the edge lands hauntology element … amazing looking place. Thanks John
brilliant walk today, john - thanks for taking us along. i've finished your first book, and i certainly enjoyed it! i'm on to the second title, cheers! ps - i've just recently watched the hordern-acted adaptation of the james short story - spooky stuff, that!
Another excellent video and interesting. It looks a nice place to explore. I must say that watching your videos has a very calming effect on me. It's almost as if we're walking along with you. I look forward to your next video as always. I have at last got a copy of you're book 'This Other London' which was very interesting.
Thoroughly enjoyed that John. Thank you!
Great video John 📗📗📗📗📗📗📗📗
Thanks Alan
amazing walk -- and loved the info on hauntology. glad the knee is getting better!
Thanks for sharing your trip with us all ❤ it
Wonderful stuff John👍
A hidden gem this walk
Very enjoyable walk thanks John😊
I started watching your videos because I was born and lived in Leyton in my early years and enjoyed your walks in that area. But it was a nice surprise to see you doing a walk in the area that I now live. The Orwell and Stour Valleys are a real favourite of mine. 🙂🙂🥾🥾
Cracking video John. Love Fishers writing. I also think all of us here are pleased your knee is in better shape!
Many thanks Ben - it held up brilliantly well - just need to build back the strength in the rest of my legs
Nice one John, wonderful vid...
Thanks Ralph
Great walk, John. One of your best!
Thanks Trevor
Thank you. Enjoyed it.
Thank you. I love to see and hear you exploring Suffolk. I have lived there, but never visited Felixstowe. I feel like I’ve had a taster now.
Love this! My home county and my favourite place to go ❤ Felixstowe, ate many chips in the Victorian shelter by the big house.
There is so much to discover on the Suffolk Coast. But shhh don’t tell everyone.
Just watched this and…wow. Nothing else to say John. Thank you
Thanks very much Franssens!
@ 🤣it’s Mark, Franssens is my surname but cool you responded at all. Thank you
Wow great walk John i love Suffolk too
Not a journey I would ever have considered doing but I am glad you did and shared it with us!
Great walk that John. Thank you.
Beautiful photography. Nice work John❤
Thanks John
Fabulous! Loved every minute, makes me want to set off and explore that haunted coastline myself :-)🎉
fabulous ❤
Thank you so much for that Leslie - I got such an immense amount from this walk and the making of the video.
Fantastic video
Excellent walk in the best county.
Another incredible episode!
Thanks so much Marco
Hi John this is a great walk, one that my wife and I have done once and 50% of once. (I have been involved in importing containers from the Far East for many years)
When you were at Landguard; you mentioned you fancied a coffee- there is a good cafe next to container port where you can get a hot drink and wholesome food and then sit and watch the unloading of the ships,
Did you know some of these ships are 400 metres long and can carry over 20, 000 containers.
Hugely inspiring.
Great walk!
@_....J........................ Thanks J 👍
Nostalgia for the future ain't what it used to be. Attributed to Yogi Berra but maybe apocryphal.
I probably didn't do a great job of explaining that aspect of it Alex - this video here is good breakdown of the concept and its origins ruclips.net/video/gSvUqhZcbVg/видео.htmlsi=4pq6JpvmNHPtSr0N
I definitely need to get out of London more often.
What a great video! Many thanks Mr Rogers.
Thanks Elvis
Majestic vid yes this my fav type ofyoir vids 😊😊
What beautiful views of the beach. Such heavy haunting thoughts~ to ponder. Loved this walk. Thank you John Rogers. Blessings from (East) Tennessee.🙏🙂🙋
Many thanks Janet
John! The romance of it all. Today I bought at our local british expat shop cider, crumpets, brandy butter and a nice piece of leister cheese. I miss England.
Very entertaining and informative.
Another excellent video. 👌
Thanks Paul
Hi John, I really enjoyed this video - I like to read the British Library collections of Tales of the Weird this time of year and this video really hit the mark for me. I'm reading Into the London Fog - atmospheric Victorian ghost stories. As a keen walker, I've not walked this stretch of coast and I'll definitely be staying at the hotel you stayed the night at. Very MR James. Thankyou. I found this film very relaxing and meditative as always. Btw, I always enjoy the music you put to your videos. you're a legend mate. Thanks.
Hope your knee is ok nice vid wishes a good new year to ya
Good video!
Oh man! That walk from the River Deben north along past Bewdsey is wonderful - such a shame!
I’m definitely going back in the Spring Jeremy
@@JohnRogersWalks A sunny May day would be perfect John - the birdlife is particularly amazing!
Great Video John . was only down that way last week so will no go down again and have a look at some of the place you walked.
Very good indeed.. and yes it was beautiful :)
Thanks Richie
This just popped up on my RUclips feed I think because it knew you walked past my house! I live next to the big pile of hey bails. I’m a photographer by trade and I have made a lot of work on the Suffolk landscape which echos a lot of the sentiments here. Let me know if you walk the Ipswich to Trimley route (well worth it) and I’ll happily make you a coffee!
Sometimes its not about watching the video in one go but coming back and competing it later :)
