- There’s a reason the dumbo octopus won the award of Nautilus Live fan favorite deep sea creature- no matter how many times we see one of these pelagic cirrate octopods, it’s always a treat! The team was treated to THREE different dumbo octopuses during dive H1993 as we explored the slopes of seamounts in US waters south of Johnston Atoll near the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. Exploration dives continue to reveal incredible animals living in the deep sea including in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ).
Get up close and personal with these tentacled cephalopods in this highlight video! First up at 1,494 meters deep, we see a long-armed yellow Cirroteuthid that is so large it practically dwarfs the scaling lasers. After that, you’ll see two Grimpoteuthis octopuses: one adorable pink one spotted at 1,575 meters and at 1,423 meters an extra plump individual with fins that earn its name “Dumbo.” Did you know that dumbo octopuses are the deepest living of all octopuses and can be found up to 4,000m?

It's always adorable to hear that even professional's hearts melt when they see cute critters
To the man who said "if we've got enough images here, we can move on" DON"T poop on my party! There are never enough images of the cutest sea creature alive!
lol at 3:24 that's definitely the geologist
Those are some great lava flows
Imagine aliens thinking humans are cute - aww did you see his tattoo's? So vibrant!
I guess elephants find humans cute in the same way we find animals cute
Dumbos are awesome. Thanks for showing us this.
possibly the greatest title for a video ever
Please never stop exploring and uploading
They’re so cute omg
One of the Dumbo Octopuses closest relatives is the vampire squid. Both are also closely related to Octopuses and distantly to squid, but technically are something else entirely.
Interesting fact
Do you have any sources for that? That sounded interesting, so I decided to look it up, and so far I haven't been able to find anything backing that. I'm mostly finding information saying that vampire squid are part of a sister-group to octopoda. meaning they're not any closer to dumbo octopuses than they are to other octopus species. I'm no expert, though, so I thought I'd ask, who knows, maybe there's some ongoing debate about the topic or something that I'm not aware of.
I love that my own childlike glee at seeing exciting sea creatures is also shared in the professional community. you can't help but marvel! I love seeing scientists and science fields not so serious and just excited dorks like me 💕 show us a million little friends
Dumbo octopus battle = slap fight 😂
Watch out for that sucker punch!
@@frozenwild4933 😂
Nature is gorgeous!❤
Wow thanks for this amazing footage, fascinating!
Real cephalopod geek here, my guess on identification;
1st octo - Almost definitely a Cirrothauma Magna, also known as the Giant cirrate octopus. This is the biggest of all octopus species with dumbo fins (that we know of) and can grow to almost 2 meters in total length!
2nd octo - Definitly a species of Grimpoteuthis, although it's hard to say wich one specifically. The pigmentation is a different from what i've seen elsewhere.
3rd octo - Also definitely a species of Grimpoteuthis. Looks like this one might be at the end of its life cycle? When they near the end of their lives they get scruffy and pale looking skin, often starting at the tips of the arms and moving up.
But I'm not an expert just an enthousiast, love to know the experts opinion on these!
Cool! Thanks for sharing
Watching the third dumbo, from a distance reminds me of turtle swimming. 😊 everyone have a good, and safe day
You just broke my cuteness meter.
What wonderful creatures. I hope they share the planet with us for a long time yet.
Great work as usual. Thanks from hot Vienna, Scott
I hope I can watch these creatures like this someday :)
Great footage. Thanks

Good eye Steve!!
Their excitement is infectious!
That first dumbo is really big! Those tentacles are a move out of the Magnapinnidae's playbook!
Incredible - as always!
"Those are great lava flows..." eheh
Ladies: "Dumbo! Dumbo! Dumbo!"
Guy: "Those are great lava flows."
I'm dying here! 🤣
Well, I'm a lady and I was more interested in that hot stratigraphy too.
Haha the guys were geologists on this shift iirc.
Really cool guys thanks

Awwwwwwww
Massive Dumbo cutie sassy octopus
I CAN LISTEN TO YALL ALL DAY..........DESCRIBING ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING!
Totally and completely amazing. Would you like to know what the Dumbo’s were thinking?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Shouldn't they be doing the diagnostic shots first and the beauty shots after? Id something happens or the animal flees, the science part is more important, isn't it?
It looks like a Rocinela isopod attached to the first octopus.
its like it has a fish fin butterfly but its an octopus, squid?
They're something else entirely. They're closely related to Octopuses though. Only distantly to squid.
Are the lasers for a distance calculation?
It's for size reference. The distance between two lasers is 10cm.
@@dewantoroo Thanks!
How far apart are the scaling lasers?
10 cm apart
I know this is edited, but is there a way to just add measurements on audio? Not to overlap the video via a cc?I'm ref to the first one. But no matter, each one, please?
You know and know the cam distance, we have bo ref.
Was this a record for Dumbo octopodes?
An albino vampire squid maybe?
They're quite similar in morphology but completely different animal.
Does anyone else mute the twee commentary? It's pretty cringe.
