Honestly I've been getting bored of gaming have been since a teen but I don't enjoy as much anymore, OW2 is fun for 2 matches then I get off. I maybe play that game 2 a week at maximum. Now I daily drive it and have 4 home servers running 20 different instances of it. I even have my WiFi AP running a version with a custom kernel driver I wrote for a 1.8" LCD that shows realtime WiFi connection information.

There's a learning curve but switching to linux does make you less dependent on corporate bullshit so it's worth it. Also, consider matrix as an alternative for Discord. Absolutely, but do note that the onus isn't on Linux. The way those rootkits work is that they take control of your entire computer in a way that, while it would work on Linux, would go against the license of it unless it's open sourced. EAC, VAC and BattlEye have shown that you don't need to do this to have a competent anti-cheat.

    • @kibabyte
      @kibabyte Месяц назад +1

      @@boo_1096 VAC is not competent. Atleast not when you take into account the experience players have. Yes it bans many accounts but since people just create new ones and aren't banned immedietly they still manage to ruin a considerate amount of matches for many players.

    • @boo_1096
      @boo_1096 Месяц назад

      @@kibabyte Ok, maybe I've had a positive experience which is disproportionate to others with VAC, which could absolutely be the case because I haven't played much CS:{GO,2}. I think my point still stands with regards to BattlEye/EAC. The issues I've seen have mostly been with the game-specific implementations, but the anticheats overall seem to work and don't need a rootkit.

    • @GoodGirlPeruru
      @GoodGirlPeruru 15 дней назад

      Unfortunately usually the most effective method of enforcing change is by radicalising people and people naturally have stronger responses to negativity. People will be more likely to step to action if they're convinced the situation they live in is more negative, _not_ as much if they're convinced something else is _better._
      That's not to say it's the ONLY method, but i can understand people hella boiling that down for you because a lot of linux users are straight up exhausted with Microsoft and kind of just resort to the same response to it regardless of the situation
      I love how Linux feels to use, not physically, but _emotionally,_ and morally if that makes sense, and if i could convince people just by telling them how good that feeling is, to be part of that community effort to make a better world for everyone else in that community, i totally would! Unfortunately that doesnt really work very well, so i err on not really trying to convince anyone at all, because i know someone else is eventually going to do a much better job of it than me (microsoft)

      You're getting a lot of advice to dual boot. I do not recommend this. I recommend a dedicated Linux machine. I would recommend finding a machine that's older, like what you or a family member just upgraded from, and try daily driving. Windows has an unfortunate habit of messing up the boot config for other OSes.
      Don't go too old doing this, hardware is always hardware, and Linux definitely benefits from better hardware. But I think you'll have less frustration this way than dual boot.

      Bro... It will look like i am talking BS but this is serious stuff... Wanna learn A LOT about Linux? Seriously?
      Then go Install Arch reading the man pages and the Archwiki... I am serious! No, i am serious! Really!
      Then try to make Sway or Hyprland work, configure to your taste.
      zsh + oh my zsh + syntax highlighting + autosuggestion... Then you Install LF file manager and configure it.
      It isn't as hard as it looks (believe me), and you gonna learn everything from mounting devices to interface customization, it will take time but way less than reading books and way more knowledge about what the actual state of the system (not the kernel).
      You can study enough to make a good arch install in 3 days at most
      Sway? 1 weekend
      Terminal? 1 week
      I did almost the same for FreeBSD a long time ago and it was magical to learn how the system works internally.
      BUT start with Linux Mint Cinnamon btw (or Debian Cinnamon)

      wikipedia has loads of general computer science and linux info
      your distro will have a manual, wiki and forum usually (it's good to use popular distros)
      for information on a command or program, type "man foo" to see the manual for foo, or type "man man" for more ways to use the man command
      man pages are usually really dense and don't have examples, so you could also use the texinfo program

Feeling like I'm *actually* using a computer and feeling like it's mine has been incredibly gratifying, and it's also made using my computer just in general much more fun. Then with windows 7/8/8.1 becoming unsupported on top of other frustrations with windows, I was suggested linux in a comment, and then suddenly I was reading all these linux articles learning more about it. Linux and open source ideologically spoke to me too, it re-lit my joy in tinkering with computer things. I installed linux mint onto the PC I built this past winter, no windows, just to force myself to daily drive. It's so nice! I'm thinking about which old laptop of mine I can wipe to distro-hop, and working on a plan to switch all my personal computers to some flavor of linux. I'm all in as well!

    Some day I will come back to Linux again. I've been using Arch as a daily more than 1.5y, but few weeks ago I've moved back to Windows.. I love Linux and KDE as a DE, but constantly fixing issues after updates just to play with friends is exhausting. There's always something that blocks you to enjoy the system. (NVIDIA or Kernel or gamescope or wine...). I do play Star Citizen and League of Legends most of the time and time to time I check the new games. There's always something not working... again and again..

      so far im gonna try and install Arch onto my 64G USB tomorrow and see

    the safe open source software argument isn't holding up that well after the .xz backdoor, but don't get me wrong I still love linux, my only current concern is that my primary computer is a macbook pro 2021, and yes I tried asahi linux and daily drove it for like 7 months last year but there were still too many problems and proton also doesn't work (because of the m1), after my macbook is retired I'll probably make the switch to an amd framework-labtop, and go linux full time.

    • @see-sharp
      @see-sharp Месяц назад

      Actually it is holding yup better every day, that's exactly how open-source works, that's the old "test based vs obfuscation based" argument, i will go even further: How fast it was solved shows exactly why you should use OSS. I don't know where you get this idea from but PUBLIC codes have way more PUBLIC vulnerabilities and they have way more PUBLIC power in order to solve it. In 3 days everything was back to normal, there was no damage at all AND KB5034441 still there.

    • @anon_y_mousse
      @anon_y_mousse Месяц назад +7

      Because it's open source the exploit was caught fairly quickly. If it had happened with closed source then no one would have known about it for months, if at all. Since you can't audit closed source, there's no way to know for certain that there aren't multiple exploits already. Come to think of it, that might explain why so many people say they get better performance when they switch to Linux.

    • @lisaayres-zp5jj
      @lisaayres-zp5jj Месяц назад +4

      xz is only insecure in ssh, plus virtually all servers use linux as it's open source model has made it out-compete the rest

    • @deviantsemicolon618
