STORYLINE:
A fan zone set up in Paris erupted into loud cheers as France’s Leon Marchand won gold with a dominating victory in the men’s 400-meter individual medley on Sunday night.
As Marchand took an unassailable lead in the race, the watching crowds grew louder, chanting his name and applauding.
“It's a beautiful time. Everyone's screaming, everyone is happy for France and we love it,” said Paris resident Jules Modolo who has been visiting the fan zone each day throughout the start of the Games.
For local Manon Gatignon, a medal for Marchand was expected, but the gold was still a “huge surprise.”
And the venue itself has admirers.
The imposing-looking City Hall in the French capital has a massive façade stretching high and wide and a large fan area has been set up with two large screens for viewing the Olympic events.
“It’s a very good way to take advantage of the beautiful city,” said Javier Vera, visiting from Mexico for the Games.
Paris expat from Verona, Nam Chau, echoed the sentiments, adding that while France has many monuments, “they try to put a value on it and use it in other ways.”
