UNEDITED: The final 31.8 seconds of the UCLA comes back against California. Josh Shipp makes and incredible behind the backboard shot with 1.5 seconds to go.
The best part of this video is the Cal fan at about 3:38. He was waving his Cal towel/flag around earlier when Cal was winning, all smiles. Now he looks stupefied. haha. I was in Westwood before the game and I saw that guy at the In-N-Out all painted up, decked out in Cal stuff, even had those Cal Crocs
Shipp's shot was at the corner of the board. Same play by Anthony Carter in the NBA back in 2000 was ruled legal. It came at an angle and only partial part of ball was over board. I know NBA and NCAA rules are slightly different. Also, I'm not saying I know what the rule setters had in mind when that rule was set. However it seems on both plays that the interpretation by the refs was if part of the ball is "outside" the top of the board, it's legal. Either way, it was an incredible shot.
Just watched this game on ESPNU. I can understand the refs not making the call on the over the backboard shot. What I can’t understand is Musberger saying the shot was over the backboards a dozen times while the refs were reviewing it and never once mentioning that a shot over the backboard is illegal. Pretty common rule that Musberger should have known.
well there were definitely some controversial calls or no-calls in the last two games but regardless, u cannot take anything away from this bruin team. all that matters is that ucla got the win and will hopefully get they're no. 1 seed in the tournament. u can think what you want about them but they are a great team who any team should be worried to play against.
lol there's a simple answer for that my friend: college basketball players have SKILL...people get drafted into the NBA from here.. these games are really exciting and fun to watch..a handful of players in the league are even better than some of the NBA players we know today. (plus its really expensive to go watch nba games...so college is next in line :P)
Just fyi, while i do think that some of the calls have gone our way, Josh Shipp's shot was not illegal. According to the head of the Pac-10, the ref was forced to make a judgment call because it was SO close to the corner, & he agreed it was the right call not to take away the basket. That being said, we need to clean up on D & be less sloppy. But what a way to leave my senior year at UCLA! Most fun I've had in a while... AND i sat behind Kareem Abdul Jabbar! Go Bruins!
it was a good game i thought kevin craft sucked at first but after he calmed down he was alright. i think we got a legit shot this season of ending as a ranked team and definately win a bowl game
they have to make the call on the spot.....i dont blame them for not calling it even though im a ucla fan....its a tough and hard angle to see and think and the same moment that o did hte ball go over the backboard o ya thtats out of bounds within 6 seconds or so
not quite sir. it speaks VERY well of cal though. this is what the pac 10 is, like nobody ever doubted that any of the teams could be this good. Oregon state is an exception.
I was watching Sportscenter on ESPN and according to the NCAA rulebook, Cal really won this game. According to the rules "The ball shall be considered out of bounds if it passes the backboard from any direction." Therefore, Shipp's shot didn't count. I don't know if they will take away UCLA's win or what. Very odd scenario.
That was an amazing shot, and yes, it reminded me of Larry Bird. Well, except for one major difference. Bird's shot was disallowed. I also wonder if they should have called a technical when the cheer squad and bench ran onto the floor with time remaining. I give credit to UCLA for fighting back and managing to pull out the win here, but the refs did make some big mistakes in crunch time.
Boy I hate to mention USC in the same posting but a player named Dwight Anderson who transferred from Kentucky in the late 1970s made a shot at the Sports Arena running a ball down spinning 180 degrees and launched it over the back of the board and it went in. Wish I could get that on RUclips but I think a rule was put in after that shot the disallowed future shots of that type. Anybody got it? Hey I'm a lifelong Bruin fan now living in Memphis.....Go figure!
Generally it is not considered "owned" when you lead a team the whole game and they win by 1 point on an illegal shot set up by an intentional foul that isn't called. But you are correct. UCLA can show their mettle tonight. Should be a good game.
So, basically, it's only an incredible shot if it went over the backboard but it's also illegal if it goes over the backboard. Never let the rules get in the way of a good story.
Actually shots behind the backboard are legal as long as they do not touch the backboard. On the other hand, passes from behind the backboard are illegal.
Actually, there were a number bad or missed calls. I'm glad for the win but yeah it's definitely got a few controversial calls or no-calls. The foul against Anderson, hard to see from the angle they keep showing, the shot over the backboard. From some angles it looks legal, but others, the arc does look over the corner. And Cal an extra 0.6. clearly wrong since the ball was still in the air with 0.4 left. The clock stops when the ball hits the ground, but the camera wasn't on it when it did.
Although it is good that our college sports are played on national television, not ALL sports are boradcasted. For example, -women's/men's volleyball (college or national) is not broadcasted until national championships -same with soccer... not broadcasted until MLS finals or FIFA (or international football) -fencing is not broadcasted at all -neither is MotoGP... -we don't have snooker -swimming/diving isn't broadcasted until the olympics -rugby isn't even mentioned on espn
Actually, you don't know the rule book, Hoisen. NCAA Rule 7, Section 1, Article 3 reads: ''The ball shall be out of bounds when it passes over the backboard from any direction.'' That wasn't an appropriate response to juicysteak.
idream of going to the states to play college basketball, gonna be far far far from easy though but i just gotta go the right way about it to have a shot at it i guess.
Based on what? I've seen that replay at least 50 times and I still can't tell if it went over the back or the corner. Anyone that says Anderson was fouled is full of it. Not one replay shows hin being fouled. There were no good angles, so that is pure speculation. The refs 10 feet from the play were blocked out and didn't have a good angle either. They can't call a foul they didn't see!
I'm watching the clip and Lavin clearly says "that is usually a foul every time!" What clip are you watching. If the NCAA thought that shot should count they would have changed the rule.
I actually think the ball out call after the 3 pt shot was worse than the actual behind the backboard shot. So the refs should be under some scrutiny, regardless.
umm no. it does count because the ball did not COMPLETELY go over the backboard. if someone were to shoot it directly behind the backboard it doesnt count. shipp however was on the side. anyway, the game is over, they're not going to nullify the win.
Cal fans can blame Stanford. The refs got the memo from Stanford's game. "Do not make judgement calls on close plays at the end of games. Put the game in the hands of players."
You could have edited this better to show the no foul call to show it was a foul, and TWO...the ball go off UCLA anyway. Last two UCLA home games have been gift wrapped.
Is tackling legal in college basketball? Alas, Cal got their revenge last season in the Pac-10 Tournament. Let's see if the Bruins can muster more magic in '10-11!
shots cant go over the backboard. regardless of whether or not they touch anything. its an ncaa rule not just something cal fans are screaming made up shit about
That's pretty ignorant. Grade inflation runs rampant at private schools, not public, the reason being that private schools need your money. That said, melkon1an's comment is irrelevant.
Its not like they made the concious descision to do that, its not cheating. If anything its poor officiating, but no ref is going to say "NOOOOO BASKET CAL BALL!" after that...
Yes, it's amazing, but it's still illegal. NCAAB rule 7, sec. 1, art. 3: "The ball shall be out of bounds when it passes over the backboard from any direction."
refs: "oh its illegal to shoot from behind the backboard? oh well we didnt see it. Well we saw it but it just went over the corner... not the same thing... okay okay it did go over the back board but that rule was just invented so teams could not have the advantage. We dont want Ucla to loose theyre low see... I mean.. Dont question our decision!"
Nice shot, but he doesn't make that in ten more tries and it also shouldn't have counted...over the backbroad. UCLA gets that home court call plus they fouled the guy before that and it went out off UCLA. Three calls go the Bruins way. Cal deserved that game, but still quite a shot by Shipp. Too bad UCLA won't get past the Sweet 16.
It's a technical foul to purposely punch a ball - so the Bears should have gotten a free throw and possession. It's ludicrous to imply that the refs gave Cal a break by putting .7 secs back on the clock. Get real.
yea sure w/e your just sad they lost probably. I'm unbiased and that definitely was a foul that should have been called, yes, but that rainbow shot was MMM MMM MMM GOOD.
Exactly as I thought. You have nothing to say as usual nor a valid comeback. Take care Mr. Lethargic. Oh sorry...you may have to look that word up as well. I am done with you.
that was such BS. Cal deserved to win that gams. Pac-10 refs blew another game. First that was an illegal shot and they hacked Ryan Anderson in order to get the ball in the first place.
he had no control of the ball and when you look at another angle theres no way the offical can call it a foul. blame the refs for the loss of the game... thats retarded, stanford did it to themselves. how do you blow a 11 point lead with 4 minutes? Thats their own fault. Cal, the refs sucked the whole game so dont complain. Not UCLA's fault that they can actually come back from a deficit.
lol watch the whole game. there were plenty of fouls during the game that were questionable for both teams. seems like you could say that about every basketball game, hmm? tool.
Wow, you barely beat an average team at home WITH the referees practically gift wrapping you the win no less... Try to SPIN it all you want but I'm sorry if you're a UCLA fan and you think this is legit then you're just lying to yourself...
A gift is better than a re-gift nyctone, so just deal with it and quit your ninnying. I am sure karma will deal Cal a card back so quit being such a baby about it. What goes around comes around. And honestly, I could care less about either team. I just wanted to see the shot and make my own assumption and boy is it an iffy call either way.
hey cal and stanford fans..now you have somethin to finally unite over...a constant bitching about the calls in this game..if your teams wouldnt have LET IT GET THIS CLOSE then there would be no possibility of a victory for the bruins..game over..get over it..see you in the tourney..(except for cal ..have fun in the NIT)
UCLA blows! Try and play a game outside of your own state in the tourney and let me know how you do...same for USC football. It's all unbalanced and a joke!
That was an amazing shot, and yes, it reminded me of Larry Bird. Well, except for one major difference. Bird's shot was disallowed. I also wonder if they should have called a technical when the cheer squad and bench ran onto the floor with time remaining. dont mind him, good footage, and good job getting this up so soon, i saw it on the yahoo homepage n wasnt sure if i'd find it yet. good job.

Thank God - a Bruin fan who knows the truth. You have redeemed UCLA in my eyes - thanks!
thank u my fellow bruin fan. the bruins will not only beat the vols they will demolish them
I was in that crowd yelling "U" in the end (the stadium split in 4 sections for U C L & A), haha awesome game.
well there were definitely some controversial calls or no-calls in the last two games but regardless, u cannot take anything away from this bruin team. all that matters is that ucla got the win and will hopefully get they're no. 1 seed in the tournament. u can think what you want about them but they are a great team who any team should be worried to play against.
You are a very brave man from behind that keyboard.
Have a nice day.
if UCLA has to beat that Cal team at home with a miracle like that...it doesn't speak that well of them.
lol
there's a simple answer for that my friend: college basketball players have SKILL...people get drafted into the NBA from here.. these games are really exciting and fun to watch..a handful of players in the league are even better than some of the NBA players we know today. i was on the front row right behind the announcers. good times.

Read the rule. It clearly states if a ball passes over the backboard. Not shot over the backboard.
that was amazing!!!

i went insane when this happened. I sprained my finger on the ceiling of my house i went so insane ahah
its a bit much to say that the game was handed to them
to ignore the combined efforts of love, mbah a moute, mata-real, collison, and westbrook
I actually think the ball out call after the 3 pt shot was worse than the actual behind the backboard shot. So the refs should be under some scrutiny, regardless.
OH MY GOD_____________
They also had Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, too...They WERE loaded!
it's unedited. i have no other footage.
LOL, Ryan Anderson was tackled in the corner.
In America, it's all about basketball, (American) football, baseball, and NASCAR, sadly... only American-born sports.
@imisssoundgarden yeah, i hate it when the home team cheers... gosh.
How exactly was Kevin Love ineligible? Enlighten us with your all knowing insight, please?
umm no. it does count because the ball did not COMPLETELY go over the backboard. if someone were to shoot it directly behind the backboard it doesnt count. shipp however was on the side. anyway, the game is over, they're not going to nullify the win.
Cal player was tackled on the out of bounds play.
Unless we're playing rugby it's usually called a foul.
How is this shot bad? Looks good to me , amazing
UCLA
cal is berkeley right? damn UCLA. im coming in fall :)
Cal fans can blame Stanford. The refs got the memo from Stanford's game. "Do not make judgement calls on close plays at the end of games. Put the game in the hands of players."

I'm willing to bet more.
University of Lickass?
What year did you graduate from UCLA?
Is tackling legal in college basketball?
Alas, Cal got their revenge last season in the Pac-10 Tournament. Let's see if the Bruins can muster more magic in '10-11!
you obviously haven't watched cal much this year.
shots cant go over the backboard. regardless of whether or not they touch anything. its an ncaa rule not just something cal fans are screaming made up shit about
GO BRUINS!!!!!!!!!
anderson jumps at the ball and knocks it out of bounds. both shipp and westbrook are falling away from the ball.
That's pretty ignorant. Grade inflation runs rampant at private schools, not public, the reason being that private schools need your money. That said, melkon1an's comment is irrelevant.

i watch college basketball cause its more violent.
I don't have a problem with the shot, but without a doubt that was a foul on the strip

technically that shot should have been out of bounds. but fortunately the refs didnt know that. go bruins
