I volunteer doing the marketing and design for a small nonprofit that has no idea how to do these things. After my first flyer I found myself wondering if the organization would be willing to get a paid account for some stock websites because, boy, are the free options limited. I forgot about Adobe (I've been learning on Affinity). The nonprofit has a Canva account, but it's a free one that's very limited. When I had an Adobe trial, I remember loving the stock options.
As for 90s design...I think the old flyer you used wasn't so bad. I've been trying to get people away from THE 90s look. I've been seeing stuff that looks like someone took clip art and arranged things in MS Word. And yet, one person used Canva with the most ornate fonts, small dark text on dark backgrounds, and printing RGB at 72 ppi with no bleeds. It's been an adventure. At least it's making me feel like I've done a decent job learning these things and can be a good guide.

The good news is that you are seeing the problems and seeing where things could be improved. Also that you notice the differences between the pro versions and non-pro. I hope that you will be able to get exchanged for all the voluntary work you do!

You should have the headline twice the size of the type below. Did you have a specific size question?

I understand! You can always tell them to remember who they want to attract to read the design and that people don't like to read too much these days.
