  • Does the European Union (EU) face a formidable rival in the form of BRICS, a group comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa? This question gains further complexity with the recent expansion of BRICS, welcoming five new members - Iran, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Egypt, and the UAE, now often referred to as BRICS+. The enlargement of BRICS into BRICS+ marks a significant shift, suggesting a growing and increasingly diverse coalition that could potentially challenge the EU's influence on the world stage. Our video delves into a detailed comparison between the original five BRICS countries and the EU, exploring the new BRICS+ members and potential future additions, to assess whether BRICS holds equivalent or greater power than the EU in global affairs.

The EU does have "rivals" but it's absolutely not BRICS...
BRICS is a different thing... It's like a loosely connected economic union.
The EU is a supranational political and economic union that is far more connected to each other then BRICS.

EU is FAR more interconnected than the BRICS. EU is truly political, economical and nowadays even cultural and ALMOST military block. EU is between confederation (decentralized federation) and federation (USA, Mexico, Brazil). EU is also very similar in religion, culture and history, so its naturally very united. And its political system is only DEMOCRACY. The only reason of Brics is to challenge the economical dominance of the West, that's so little for union. Brics nations have very different interests, completely different political systems (some are one party totalitarian, some are absolutist monarchies, some flawed democracies). There are many disputes between them and such differences will always result in conflicts and disputes in the future. China and India are periodically killing each others border armies and have many land disputes. Saudi Arabis has voluntarily US military bases. I would say even ASEAN is much closer cooperation than BRICS.

Even calling Brics an economic union is a massive overstatement. They don't have unified positions on pretty much anything. It's pretty much just the world's losers under one banner.

BRICS is a discussion forum, not an union. It is intended to bring emergent economies together in order to advance their interests averse to the established powers like G7. If they got a rival, it is the G7 countries - not individually, but as a group. I am Brazilian and I must say that our current government is not into rising hostility against the West as Russia and China are, our policy is much closer to an Indian approach of working with both sides for the best outcome vis-à-vis our national interests. But we are even more Western-leaning than India, for we do feel a much stronger commitment towards democracy, internationalism, universal rights and world peace than Modi's India does. We just wish a more equal world-system, where countries in the Global South would stand on an equal footing alongside the so-called Global North, i.e., where the systematic differences between them would disappear. We want a world that truly abides to these core values: liberty, equality and fraternity.
Latin America is simply built different from Asia 🕊️

    • @Aggoenix
      @Aggoenix 4 месяца назад +19

Its natural, Brazil is after all part of western civilisation, the same as Argentina or Chile. Its a mainly Christian country based on Portuguese and little less Spanish, indigenous and Italian cultures. BRICS is a weird block, neither political and neither fully economical. Those are completely different religions, ethnicities and interests. China and India are constantly killing each others border guards for decades. China is one party totalitarian regime with huge firewall internet blockade, India is a flawed democracy, Russia is authoritarian semi-democracy. Some are highly conservative, almost radical Muslim countries, some Hindu who naturally highly dislike Muslims often, some complete mix of everything. I believe Brazil would have more common interests with Europe, than with China, Russia, Saudi Arabia or South Africa. Also i find extremely funny this totalitarian axis of Russia-North Korea-Iran-Syria, people call it Axis of Evil lol. These countries are best at completely brainwashing and restricting its population and only build armies and missiles. Its soo SAD.

    • @biaispravda
      @biaispravda 4 месяца назад +5

@@Aggoenix Yes, I was a bit disappointed at this rapprochement with such authoritarian regimes, in no way akin to our worldview. Nonetheless, BRICS exists for a tactical purpose, and therefore I think it is totally valid to play with them if our goal is to change how international power relations function. I do agree that Latin America is part of the Western civilization, but it is a lesser, cursed, bastard part, an impure offspring, and in no sense member of the geopolitical West. We here cannot act as if we were peers among the Western nations, sitting on theatrical roundtables or engaging in vacuous dialogue summits, for it will only entail the maintenance of our submissive position before nations which are systematically superior to us, whose superior standpoint is sustained by our status as oppressed nations.
We must work with the West, we must negotiate and discuss to build sincere, friendly alliances - specially with the EU, which is a somewhat progressive power in the world - but we will never have a real voice, we will never be respected, if we continue to speak softly. We are not independent yet.

Most, if not all of the BRICS countries are totalitarian regimes with no accountabilities. The EU membership requires accountability on various fronts hence leading to a better quality of life within its borders. BRICS is not about individual rights, egalitarianism etc. It is just about being a platform for full and semi totalitarian regimes to some extent waning to ward off the American dominance the latter of which is understandable. Yet still, they do not constitute an alternative.

EU is almost closed borders so it's better for communication whereas
BRICS lacks it, although Indian stock market gives better and reliable returns than volatile European ones.

The real problem with BRICS is that there is little holding it all together, each of the countries in it don't have that much in common and there is no integration, so no, it's no real challenge to the EU.
The US, China and maybe Indie in the long term are more of a challenge for the EU, just as each of these are a challenge to each other.
The other problem with the BRICS group, China and India are massive in comparison to the other members, and India and China are so different from each other on so many levels that for it to be meaningful, they would have to find far deeper common ground which will be a challenge considering the countries we are talking about.
Also, them not liking the west isn't going to be enough to give it any real teeth, many of the countries in that would have to make some hard choices for that to happen and that seems highly unlikely with the countries in it, basically, China and India would be running the show for their own interest at the expense of the rest and even then, China and India are not exactly on friendly terms.
Basically, if they really want to be a power, economic integration is one thing but it will need political integration, which lets be blunt about this, because of the size of China and India, it would give them two all the powers at the expense of the others in the BRICS group, to put it another way, there's too much of a difference over the countries political and economic views for it to be a threat.
The African Union, Latin American Union or South East Asian Union is a lot more credible, some of which are modelled on the EU but are going about its formation the wrong way, the African Union is a prime example, there's no correct and stick to get remembers to change, they let pretty much any African country in, there's very little in foundations and unity that holds it together on political and economic matters and to get that, they need to start from the ground up with fewer countries that have a lot more in common and then making it work, with that, encouraging others to change with the carrot and stick approach.
The biggest mistake I'm seeing with them is that they are all rushing to try and replicate what the EU did, but we should remember, the EU took a long time to get to this stage, it also did some after the second world war which made it a lot more politically easier to integration because of the destruction of the second world war, but on the plus side, these other unions have a blueprint in how to do it by looking at how the EU went about it, learning from that and either following that and doing their own changes.
My advice to these countries that want to form these unions, start smaller with like-minded countries and ideally, countries that are around the same size in power, political and economic, as for BRICS, it's no threat because China and probably India will abuse it, China already shows that it wants more power around the world, that power play is why it's not likely to work, because the smaller countries in it will get pushed aside and become irrelevant, or worse, under the thumb of China.

      *I m Indian*
India is an insular country. We don't think much about the outside world and never in a million years will india seek any foreign control etc.
Our highest goal is to be completely sovereign someday. That's about it.
Also Indians don't think "west" but we think on individual country basis. US is disliked by some indians not because of ideological stuff but due to them backing pakistan in cold war and trying to meddle in our affairs. Support/oppose for US is 50-50

    • @paul1979uk2000

@@himanshugurjar9002 There's nothing wrong with giving up some control if done right and if it's balanced, but doing that takes a lot of time and there needs to be a lot of common ground among the countries to do that, the EU countries show it can work.
As for the BRICS countries, there are too many differences among the countries, there's also too big of a size difference among many of the countries that makes it very difficult to give over some power to a central body, because in the case of the BRICS countries, both China and India would be dominant over all the others because of the economy and population difference, it doesn't really make it practical that it can work, but a lot of the other smaller Asian countries are in a better position to pull it off and probally will want to do so, so they can compete with India and China long term, this is also the case for a lot of countries around the world that I think many of the smaller ones are going to have to group together to compete with the bigger players.

BRICS is a bank not a union of any kind. Its akin to how IMF or World Bank operates. Also India isn't anti west, its not pro west either...its just apathetic to most world issues apart from its own. China aims for a superpower position, Russia aims for a dominant power in a multipolar world. Brazil and S. Africa are at this point not growing as much.

Almost everyone wants to run or at least move away from the US, USD and the west whenever possible. Certainly not. And that has a lot to do with the fact that the EU is a union of neighboring countries. That makes them look at their own interest as well as their interest as a group(!) in a very different way. Opposite to what many people - and unfortunately also many candidate & member countries - think, the economic issues are only a part of the motivation - and not even the most important one - that led to this Union.
For centuries european countries have been waging war against each other. Creating a secure & peaceful future was the motivation at the beginning of what became the EU. ( Look up the "European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC)" ) Trade & commerce has been a means to this end, but not the main objective. And this developed into a European identity that many would not have thought possible. Try and transfer a kind of "BRIC identity" to Brasil or South Africa?! What would that be?? The only "identity" I can think of is some opposition to the West, I guess. Russia & China? Give me a break. They will be at each other´s throat the moment it suits them again.
Despite all the awkwardness and the sluggish & difficult decision making processes etc in the EU, it has been an amzing success. We just don´t appreciate it any more as all the achievements have become so normal for us.
80 years of peace in western Europe? First time ever.
German unification - unthinkable, had West Germany not been so closely tied into the EU and the Allied powers did not have to fear a united Germany.
The "Good Friday Agreement"? Only possible because of the EU and in jeopardy now as the UK has left and has no clue about how to solve the Northern Ireland question.
Just to name a few examples political examples.
Without the EU Ireland would still be poor and Poland would be far from its current economic strength. Greece would still have to rely on devaluating their Drachme constantly to attract business. Just to name some economic examples.
I am German. Despite Germany´s dark history, I could go to the NL beaches to enjoy my vacations as a youngster. I studied in Germany and England. I am now married to a Dane and live in DK. No red tape whatsoever.
We go skiing in Italy and vacation in Greece and Spain. Last summer I circled the Baltic Sea by Motorbike and crossed 10 borders without once showing any document to anybody. I can spend my pension days in any of thes 27 countries with medical support and no hazzle. My kids have the whole EU as their playground - to travel, live and work whereever they want. Just some private examples.
Hotchpotch?? No way. Just look at it properly and appreciate and enjoy the EU.
      (Apologies for a long answer.)

When has China lied? It does not need to since the people are very happy with the highest rate of quality of life, savings and life satisfaction in every survey by international polling services. Same in Russia, much more rise in quality of life than the US or EU. China eliminated poverty iin 15 years, and the working class is smaller than the middle class. The average saving for the working class is 56% of their monthly income is saved. They are by far the largest car market in the world and they buy in cash from savings. Americans used to save but now every bit of income goes to debt services, so Chinese are much more stable and have a higher level of happiness. One visit to any Chinese city reveals they are the most modern cleanest in the world. Any look at US cities shows extreme decay, crime, homelessness and division. My last visit to the UK was depressing, dirty streets, disrepair, and poverty.
I have been in 92 countries and many times in a lot of them and find the best quality of life now has changed a lot, China and Russia are clearly ahead of the crumbling west.

Yes, China's GDP has been severely underestimated. In 2023, China's manufacturing industry accounted for approximately 27% of GDP, while the manufacturing industry in the United States accounted for approximately 10%. According to GDP calculations, China's manufacturing added value is $4.87 trillion, while the United States is $2.5 trillion. China's manufacturing GDP is 1.94 times that of the United States, almost equivalent to two other countries. If GDP is calculated according to the circulation laws of the United States and India, China's GDP will be 2 to 2.5 times that of the United States.
