Exactly it’s not meant to compete with the eu. It’s meant to compete with the G7
EU is FAR more interconnected than the BRICS. EU is truly political, economical and nowadays even cultural and ALMOST military block. EU is between confederation (decentralized federation) and federation (USA, Mexico, Brazil). EU is also very similar in religion, culture and history, so its naturally very united. And its political system is only DEMOCRACY. The only reason of Brics is to challenge the economical dominance of the West, that's so little for union. Brics nations have very different interests, completely different political systems (some are one party totalitarian, some are absolutist monarchies, some flawed democracies). There are many disputes between them and such differences will always result in conflicts and disputes in the future. China and India are periodically killing each others border armies and have many land disputes. Saudi Arabis has voluntarily US military bases. I would say even ASEAN is much closer cooperation than BRICS.
Even calling Brics an economic union is a massive overstatement. They don't have unified positions on pretty much anything. It's pretty much just the world's losers under one banner.
BRICS is a discussion forum, not an union. It is intended to bring emergent economies together in order to advance their interests averse to the established powers like G7. If they got a rival, it is the G7 countries - not individually, but as a group. I am Brazilian and I must say that our current government is not into rising hostility against the West as Russia and China are, our policy is much closer to an Indian approach of working with both sides for the best outcome vis-à-vis our national interests. But we are even more Western-leaning than India, for we do feel a much stronger commitment towards democracy, internationalism, universal rights and world peace than Modi's India does. We just wish a more equal world-system, where countries in the Global South would stand on an equal footing alongside the so-called Global North, i.e., where the systematic differences between them would disappear. We want a world that truly abides to these core values: liberty, equality and fraternity. Latin America is simply built different from Asia 🕊️
Its natural, Brazil is after all part of western civilisation, the same as Argentina or Chile. Its a mainly Christian country based on Portuguese and little less Spanish, indigenous and Italian cultures. BRICS is a weird block, neither political and neither fully economical. Those are completely different religions, ethnicities and interests. China and India are constantly killing each others border guards for decades. China is one party totalitarian regime with huge firewall internet blockade, India is a flawed democracy, Russia is authoritarian semi-democracy. Some are highly conservative, almost radical Muslim countries, some Hindu who naturally highly dislike Muslims often, some complete mix of everything. I believe Brazil would have more common interests with Europe, than with China, Russia, Saudi Arabia or South Africa. Also i find extremely funny this totalitarian axis of Russia-North Korea-Iran-Syria, people call it Axis of Evil lol. These countries are best at completely brainwashing and restricting its population and only build armies and missiles. Its soo SAD.
@@Aggoenix Yes, I was a bit disappointed at this rapprochement with such authoritarian regimes, in no way akin to our worldview. Nonetheless, BRICS exists for a tactical purpose, and therefore I think it is totally valid to play with them if our goal is to change how international power relations function. I do agree that Latin America is part of the Western civilization, but it is a lesser, cursed, bastard part, an impure offspring, and in no sense member of the geopolitical West. We here cannot act as if we were peers among the Western nations, sitting on theatrical roundtables or engaging in vacuous dialogue summits, for it will only entail the maintenance of our submissive position before nations which are systematically superior to us, whose superior standpoint is sustained by our status as oppressed nations. We must work with the West, we must negotiate and discuss to build sincere, friendly alliances - specially with the EU, which is a somewhat progressive power in the world - but we will never have a real voice, we will never be respected, if we continue to speak softly. We are not independent yet.
That's because Asia has been invaded colonized exploited and even fractured and it's people segregated by colonial powers for centuries. It gets to their psych a lot which is understandable.
For the last time, BRICS and EU are COMPLETELY different things. One doesn't rival the other, because they are completely different. A basketball player does not rival the football player, they operate in different sports. If you wanna talk about EU rivals, talk about Mercosur, the African Union, or ASEAN.
@@Emperor-of-United-Bharatvarsh of course, it's like saying "a NATO without USA is useless". But my point is that, looking at EU and BRICS as projects, BRICS is a totally different thing, it's just a meeting without bounding treaties or agreements, it's more like the G7. EU instead is a political, economic, judicial, regulatory and monetary union so it's not just a meeting
@@Emperor-of-United-Bharatvarsh right! By the way to me it's a very nice thing that countries try to cooperate. Also, i think that the UN must become the international regulator in terms of security and human rights, with the right to intervene in conflicts as peacekeeper
It won't. Not directly at least. I don't understand Westerners whining about the BRICS. Europeans and Americans don't know shit about what it is, but they still always seem offended by it and try waaaay too hard to diminish it anyways. The Brazilian economy is much larger than the Russian economy, around 2.228 trillion dollars, but that was barely mentioned. What's more, ecomists claim that by 2030 it could surpass Italy, taking the position of 8th place. It is worth remembering that in 2006, the Brazilian economy surpassed the British economy. We have great potential, despite the political problems.
4:20 I would like to point out a small mistakes here: on the map of the European Union it is necessary to also mark the French overseas departments in yellow. ☺
it's so unusual as it has strong enemies in the same club. India 🇮🇳 vs China (over China occupying their lands) Egypt vs Ethiopia (over Nile) Saudi Arabia vs Iran (which if you don't know until now, then you're definitely living under the rock) 😂😂 I though wish them the best. That's how economy and interests of the citizens are emphasized over politics.
@@aritraghosh4143 But what is their common goal? Certain prorussian people like to tout BRICS as some sort of Anti-USA alliance. But I very much doubt that. There are too many different nations in BRICS, each of them have their own political stances. So, I think the one goal they have in common is to increase trade and by doing so increase the wealth of each other's nation.
The western thinking, it's always a group against somebody else. That's the worst way thinking, extremely insecure. Maybe learn from the Chinese, a group work together for common goal and interest, who built with a principal. Don't look others, it's a fight between you and yourself. @@jonson856

Why even compare it to the EU. Its not even the same thing. Also calling Zelensky world leader and put him in the same category as Biden is a absolute joke .
The European Union borders two BRICS nations, one of which is currently absolutely hostile, while with the other the relationship changes depending on the government in office. In the short term, I don't think the BRICS represent a threat, they are nations that are not very cohesive among themselves, who think of forming allies only for an anti-Western function. However, I believe that this could mean the end of absolute Western hegemony, which translates into the confirmation that no single European nation can have a say in a world dominated by super powers.
I like to change the perspective, a little bit. The global south it's on the same earth as NATO which is currently absolutely hostile to many other nations.
And there was no single European hegemon probably since the Roman empire - Europe was all about balance of powers and if some state started shooting quick, it got ganged up on by others
Although many say no, BRICS is a cooperative organization with a great future. All the nations that make up the group were centers of European exploration that inspired freedom against colonialism. Brazil by Portugal, China, India and South Africa by the British were greatly explored, Russia has always been an axis against Western Europe.
Probably the main reason for most that want to join BRICS. But I don't think countries like China and Russia have the best interest of African countries.

Answer is short: no. Until now, the only power that mattered in BRICS, was the C. China. The rest wasted the opportunity to diversify their economies during the commodity boom
Even China is going through some economic and demographic dificulties these days, although not as bad as Russia, South Africa or Brazil. The only country with high levels of economic and positive natural population growth is India.

Also the Chinese economy is not going through the greatest times, with a huge real estate bubble, a declining population and deflation. *China's GDP in 2022 has exceeded the total of all EU member states.* China has almost the double of population as the whole of Europe, so that's not minimaly surprising. Seriously though, the fact that member states are actually on the brink of conflicts for years if not decades now indicates they are not as stable as one might claim. You mentioned China and India as the obvious example with both being nuclear powers, but let's not forget Saudi Arabia and Iran, both fighting multiple proxy wars and while having resumed diplomatic relations are still on the edge with each other. Another point of conflict are Egypt and Ethopia as Ethiopia is threatening Egypt's water supply with it's massive dam (GERD) which Egypt warned it will simply destroy if its water supply is getting cut off by Ethiopia. In conclusion: BRICS+ is even more unstable as BRICS was. Kinda makes sense Millei withdrew Argentina's application.

They will not only challenge the EU, they will economically bury them . Their combined weight is double the eu.s and will accelerate even more in coming years. The eu will however make a great holiday destination for tourists. Lovely quaint towns and villages.
Specifically what makes the EU fundamentally different to BRICS is that membership is a complex process involving strict economic and democratic criteria. Most, if not all of the BRICS countries are totalitarian regimes with no accountabilities. The EU membership requires accountability on various fronts hence leading to a better quality of life within its borders. BRICS is not about individual rights, egalitarianism etc. It is just about being a platform for full and semi totalitarian regimes to some extent waning to ward off the American dominance the latter of which is understandable. Yet still, they do not constitute an alternative.
What BRICS are repressive regimes? You made several false statements repeating western propaganda. Anyone who claims that the US is more democratic than say Russia is completely misinformed by their own propaganda for example.
The comparison is not correct, the EU is a supranational union. The correct thing would be BRICS vs G7, which are comparable because both are associations and political and economic forums (the EU is a member of the G7 xd)
6:26 Isn't Bulgaria and Romania part of Schengen already? Even if by sea and air only, feels like they should be on the map. Maybe I'm just being pedantic
BRICS is probably more of a comparison to the G7 than the EU It is important though that we discuss how we promote the EU, so we won't be a small global player in the upcoming multipolar future. The fact that the EU has not managed to grow its economy more than the 17 trillion, which has been the case in the past 15 years, shows us that we haven't done good enough and need to restart European Economy again🇪🇺
Considering Brexit, that's not surprising, but the economy overall is growing. Besides, quality of life matters far more for the average person over the well-being of the economy, there's too much focus on the economy in many parts of the world, especially the US, but that means very little for the average person if they don't feel that growth, and it's probably why EU countries dominant the top 10 when it comes to quality of life. Also, I get a sense that some of these other powers want to lower standards to create more economic growth, after all, if you lower standards and cut corners in a lot of areas, you can generate more economic growth, but that's not good for the citizens of a country. Say what we want about Europeans but at least the citizen are put first more times than they are in other countries, in other words, not economic growth at all cost, which is what we see in the US and China.
Laughable, this BRICS is. Anyone who understands geopolitics knows that it's a joke. If you think the EU has it's internal tensions, just wait and see. Better yet, read the news about the relations of BRICS members and read up on the individual members.
The BRICS+ is different to the EU, but don't underestimate its growing influence. Some years back when I lived in Brazil, I laughed when they said they were going to build an alternative to the IMF.... and they did develop a development fund! China particularly has been very successful in developing its investments and loans across the developing world. In trade also they support each other. China has become more successful in trading with the Latin American country than the EU has been in recent years. Russia sells large amounts of oil to Brazil, which is itself a huge oil producer. Brazil sells huge amounts of raw materials to the other states. They have grown from strength to strength. Brazil laid down a ceasefire motion on Gaza in the UN Security Council and South Africa are prosecuting Isreal in the ICC for Genocide no less. Things unheard of a decade ago. The west is becoming old and crusty and the developing world is asserting more of a say. I love our EU, but let's not sleep walk into being left behind as will happen one day if we just laugh and say "we are better than them". Look at what happened Britain over the last 100 years!
The point of the video isn't to say that individual BRICS countries can't be powerful, but that they aren't powerful as a COLLECTIVE, because they really aren't one at this point in time. The only thing they did by applying pressure together was, as you said, trying to reform Western institutions such as the IMF and building the New Development Bank (which is mostly China-dominated btw). Other than that, all the feats you listed are the strong points of the single states, not the collective, achievable by simple trade/political deals that don't really require a supranational entity like the EU to be made.
Good luck with consensus finding in this hotchpotch group of nations! Economic power alone does not have any unifying element. All have their own objectives and interest - not necessarily compatible. Not comparable with the EU at all.
@@tomorrowneverdies567 Certainly not. And that has a lot to do with the fact that the EU is a union of neighboring countries. That makes them look at their own interest as well as their interest as a group(!) in a very different way. Opposite to what many people - and unfortunately also many candidate & member countries - think, the economic issues are only a part of the motivation - and not even the most important one - that led to this Union. For centuries european countries have been waging war against each other. Creating a secure & peaceful future was the motivation at the beginning of what became the EU. ( Look up the "European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC)" ) Trade & commerce has been a means to this end, but not the main objective. And this developed into a European identity that many would not have thought possible. Try and transfer a kind of "BRIC identity" to Brasil or South Africa?! What would that be?? The only "identity" I can think of is some opposition to the West, I guess. Russia & China? Give me a break. They will be at each other´s throat the moment it suits them again. Despite all the awkwardness and the sluggish & difficult decision making processes etc in the EU, it has been an amzing success. We just don´t appreciate it any more as all the achievements have become so normal for us. 80 years of peace in western Europe? First time ever. German unification - unthinkable, had West Germany not been so closely tied into the EU and the Allied powers did not have to fear a united Germany. The "Good Friday Agreement"? Only possible because of the EU and in jeopardy now as the UK has left and has no clue about how to solve the Northern Ireland question. Just to name a few examples political examples. Without the EU Ireland would still be poor and Poland would be far from its current economic strength. Greece would still have to rely on devaluating their Drachme constantly to attract business. Just to name some economic examples. I am German. Despite Germany´s dark history, I could go to the NL beaches to enjoy my vacations as a youngster. I studied in Germany and England. I am now married to a Dane and live in DK. No red tape whatsoever. We go skiing in Italy and vacation in Greece and Spain. Last summer I circled the Baltic Sea by Motorbike and crossed 10 borders without once showing any document to anybody. I can spend my pension days in any of thes 27 countries with medical support and no hazzle. My kids have the whole EU as their playground - to travel, live and work whereever they want. Just some private examples. Hotchpotch?? No way. Just look at it properly and appreciate and enjoy the EU. (Apologies for a long answer.)
But BRICS do not consider the EU at all because they can see they are failed states that are crashing. No one pays attention to the people in the EU. At best, and this is generous, the one or two that escaped being led by despicable thugs are selfish inwards looking places that never step up to help in the world. It may be that in decades to come, one or two will finally step up but apart from nationalistic cheerleading in forums, the only member with real impact is China currently, for better or worse. It’s a shame because a group of the ‘global south’ from democracies could play a hugely beneficial role in the world, but a group such as Brics with nothing holding them together apart from resentment towards the west, can’t have impact. A group made up of Brazil, Chile, India, Malaysia, South Africa, Mexico etc - now that’s a group with a common thread and potentially common concerns that could make a difference. That said, they still won’t ever get to a point of a currency, political integration, donating money from wealthier members to assist poorer members. Even if eu never takes that final huge step towards a federal superstate, and I don’t believe it will integrate defense and the members will surrender much more political control, it has still accomplished an awful lot with just a common market and no version of Brics will emulate that.
The EU does have "rivals" but it's absolutely not BRICS...

The EU is a supranational political and economic union that is far more connected to each other then BRICS.

Its soo SAD.
it is a discussion forum, but it seems that the ambition is to undermine Western dominance.

The EU membership requires accountability on various fronts hence leading to a better quality of life within its borders.
@@paul1979uk2000 But quality of life is crashing in UK and EU and improving in every way in China and Russia.
Laughable, this BRICS is. Anyone who understands geopolitics knows that it's a joke. If you think the EU has it's internal tensions, just wait and see. Better yet, read the news about the relations of BRICS members and read up on the individual members.
You don't even need be much in the know about geo politics to recognize a clown show that is BRICS.
I don't get it - haven't we learned by now that aggregate GDP is not a good measure of comparison?
If viewed from a GDP perspective, in 2022, China's GDP has exceeded the sum of all EU member states.
When did we learn that exactly?
Especially if China cooks it to be 60% inflated
This feels like a weird video and to top it off… Lithuania is not Eastern Europe. Lithuania is a Baltic country. 1/3.
The balcans is Eastern Europe
Balto slavic countries are eastern european countries. Italic, celtic and germanic are western european
"Successful" isnt how I'd describe China's lending..
India & China are 2 of the biggest economies in the world so EU no match, better they hide under the skirt of USA 😂
Good luck with consensus finding in this hotchpotch group of nations! Economic power alone does not have any unifying element. All have their own objectives and interest - not necessarily compatible. Not comparable with the EU at all.
Isn't the EU also a "hotchpotch group of nations" in the same logic though?
@@tomorrowneverdies567
Certainly not.
Is there a single country in the EU with improving economics and rising quality of life? They are vassals of a crashing USA and have no say in their future.
@@tomorrowneverdies567 Not even remotely comparable magnitude, no, most of brics+ are rogue states and dictatorship with vastly different cultures and interests, with the biggest of them being at each other's throat and ready to backstab, with neither currency being particularly stable and thrustworthy and the list goes on.
EU and BRICS+ are in different platform. EU and ASEAN are in same platform. G7 and BRICS+ are in the same platform.
The BRICS is struggling to escape US hegemony.
The EU is struggling to maintain US hegemony.
The rate of growth and the interest shown by a lot of countries tells the story.
The EU was called EEC in the Fifty's, so its much longer around then you might think. Let`s see how long those Bricks will last^^ I doubt they even make it 10 years.

BRICS ++ isn't a rival for EU/US.
But we're considering a uniform currency like " euro"..
But lack of experience we need some expert consultancy from "euro" managers, how to peg the individual currency to common currency etc.
Just silly, first off they are vastly different in their aims but much more importantly the Brics group is a collection of the worlds despots & autocratic thugs at worst.
