I would think David and Pertwee would be pretty friendly since Pertwee's last was David's first ever watched DW story but this explanation works too
Also Capaldi and Pertwee would have been a great pairing as well since Capaldi obviously likes Pertwees era (red cape thing, venusian aikido and stuff)
