Yeah, from memory there are storm drains not big enough, but I think this street (Little collins street?) would act like one giant funnel when a rain storm hits. The water just flows downhill with no where else to go.
that looks powerful enough to rival the flow of Yarra river!! thanks for taking the trouble and posting this for us all to see 10* I was in suburbia... and we had some mighty rain but nowhere near the spectacle you seem to have experienced in the city!!! WOW just goes to show how powerful mother nature really is and how powerless and at its mercy we humans are! thinking of the devastating earthquake in Chile... cannot even begin to imagine the power of THE FORCE that was unleashed there!!
The worst floods were in 1972, when cars started to float down Elizabeth St in Melbourne, ALL trains to or from Flinders St came to a complete stop. If you Google it & see a Pic of it, you'll wonder why know one drowned in the city. There always will be very dry spells & flash flooding.
It's amazing how fast the water builds and collects and turns into a flood.... Wherever all that water ended up was probably some serious damage. Hope everyone was ok.
you guys haven't seen the massive hail that we got over i rowville and lysterfield. the floods were pretty bad in the city, but the biggest hail (causing most damage) occured here. the line for the insurance to replace windows and windshields is so long .-. i got 5 windows smashed.
at first i was thinking , meh ! a little bit of hail , and then i was like:O oh FUCK!! i for one , hate the rain, and that kind of thing would be a serious nightmare.
we sure do, 6m diameter pipes are running underneath the city and suburban grids but even that could not cope with the "rain-mageddon" voumes the heavens dumped on us that day! We are told that this was an unusual meteorological, once in a lifetime, occurrence... and highest ever recorded volume in such a short period of time since the records were kept in over 120 years! Have a closer look at the size of the "drops" they look like each drop has a volume of a cup of short black coffee - HUGE!
No, YOU listen. I live on jupitor near the great red spot, on a good day it's 720 celsius. A mile wide tornado? What's that go at, like 150mph? The storm I live under has been going on at least 300 years (~1700) and the average wind speed is 612kph. Oh, did I mention this storm is 3 times the size of your entire planet?
i didn't miss the point at all. just making another point: it's not that bad. besides that, Iowa does not see the same level of violent storms that Kansas does.
I just arrived in Melbourne and was in my hotel lobby when this hit! I'm from Tassie and I've never seen anything like it lol
For me this is the stand out video of the storm of the century, EFFIN UNBELIEVABLE
i remember this! A few minutes ago, the sky was sunny and warm then all in a sudden this came. scary how fast Melbourne's whether changes.

Thats one way to clean city streets :)
Damn, I missed this! I was in Apollo Bay and would have loved to have seen a storm like this.
W.T.F!! What a huge ammount of water in a couple of minutes!! Awesome footage!!!
I was fundraising at an intersection in Hawthorn. Had to take cover real quick! Got soaked.
Good footage, thanks for uploading.
I'll remember that day for the rest of my life
it was surreal.
that came out of nowhere! amazing stuff
Awesome!
But seriously, don't you guys have stormdrains?
It's amazing how fast the water builds and collects and turns into a flood.... Wherever all that water ended up was probably some serious damage. Hope everyone was ok.
I've been recently in Melbourne. Actually i left at the 2nd of March. I missed all this! Which street-area is this?
Is that a street or a river. wow that water is moving awefully fast.
Puts a new meaning to High Street.
Those hail stones look HUGE.
That happens in the midwest of US every year. It's exciting - although usually Tornado's are around too.
Now get out there appease the "Water Gods" by doing the Melbourne shuffle ;O

I live in southern Sweden, and I can easily climb up to the roof of my house on the piles of snow. This winter has been ridiculous...
at first i was thinking , meh ! a little bit of hail , and then i was like:O oh FUCK!!
i for one , hate the rain, and that kind of thing would be a serious nightmare.
how much did it rain and hail out of that storm
@ WaldoUnited

So many of my friends windows got shattered by this storm
My 20yo friend was crying when he found his brand new BMW dented everywhere!
I think I'd rather take this weather almost everyday than all the fucking snow we've had in Sweden this winter........
looks like a lovely spot for fishing...
i didn't miss the point at all. just making another point: it's not that bad. besides that, Iowa does not see the same level of violent storms that Kansas does.

At least you're not suffering from a drought.
damn, wish i was there..i love this sorta weather, would be a change from this 40 degree heat over here in west aus
australians never seen/touched rain water before? they seem all excited and like whoaaaa...
it would be funny to watch people use water tubes on that to get to work lol

Where's the rubber dingy or the boogie board when you need it!!!!
I was there and in something like five min the CBD was a river.
Now that's a lot of water!
I would have taken my rowboat out and just floated down the river for laughs.

At least it's raining in that now desert of a country!

a road turned into a waterfall lol
Growing up in Kansas i saw worse hail storms.
No one cares.
Why the hell are they touching those water? It's on the bloody street meaning that it's filthy!

And yet we're still in a drought. weird ey?
OMG this is really scary
insane
This is obviously just the sanitation crew cleaning the streets, you can see the trash floating by hehehehehe.
That'll do a good job of cleaning all the rubbish and shit out of the alleyways!
@0:32 We see it is really raining crack-rocks!
